Boehner Elected Speaker, Long May He Reign; Obama Will Veto Keystone; Hate Crime Chickens Come Home to Roost; P.M. Links

-
Gage Skidmore John Boehner remains Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Wasn't that anti-climactic? Anyway, here's a list of everybody who voted against him.
- President Obama has vowed to veto the Keystone pipeline project.
- Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was sentenced to 2 years in prison stemming from his corruption conviction. The governor was thankful for the light sentence.
- Police officers are increasingly investigating criticisms made against them as "hate speech," according to Glenn Greenwald.
- Here are the terms of surrender that all University of Virginia fraternities must accept before they are allowed to resume social activities.
- Paul Revere's time capsule was opened. That's neat.

Finally.
How?
black magic
Talk about hate speech.
Lies, white lies.
Racist!
This is devilry, pure and simple.
Even with your perfect BMI, I bet you still weigh more than a duck!
His BMI talk is very suspicious.
The BM in that acronym is not what you think.
Yeah-K, Robby.
No Hello as punishment.
Paul Revere's time capsule was opened.
Three if by can opener.
That's impressive. I was trying to come up with something, anything to say about one of the links and I open the comments and see this.
Crowbar probably would have been better.
"Secretary of State William Galvin said notes from that era indicated that officials washed some of the contents with acid before putting them in the new copper box. He also said records show it was a humid day when the items were restored and the corner of the Statehouse where the capsule was reinstalled has had a water leakage problem for decades."
I guess people in 1855 weren't really knowledgeable about preservation.
Hey! Records from that era are spotty at best.
Still probably better than email archives from the IRS.
Christ Soave, score one major journalistic coup and all of a sudden you think you can go all high-and-mighty with your links. Sellout.
I warned you all about these millennials.
But did you poll us? I think not.
You don't want to be polled by this crowd, Sparky.
Here's how you get poled around here.
I'm a millennial sent from the future to warn the current millennials off their polling addiction. YE BE WARNED.
My bosses are not concerned by the statistical mood determination of undomesticated walking snacks of a particular 1980's vintage.
What journalistic coup did he score?
He was the first one to investigate and call out the Rolling Stone story as being BS.
The first one if you don't count Richard Bradley, Steve Sailer, and literally every person in the comment's section.
Not a fan of Sailer's, but credit where it's due.
Stomping a writer for Jezebel.
That's not a challenge.
But I'll still cheer when it happens.
She apologized to him.
"Apologized" is a much as you can call her pathetic mea culpa.
He doesn't even have a masters in Journalism from Columbia.
That's probably why they were late.
'They' being the links.
Duh.
No, it was confusing, he could have meant his menses were late.
John Boehner remains Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Let the tears flow like wine.
Providing Resources to Guests:
Sober brother monitors:
-A minimum of 3 brothers must be sober and lucid at each fraternity function.
-"Sober and lucid" is defined as a brother acting without influence of any
substance.
-All monitors must wear a designated identifier, which will remain consistent
across all IFC chapters.
This sounds like a whole lot of fun.
All monitors must wear a designated identifier
You know who else required people to wear a designated identifier?
Retail employers?
The administration at my hospital?
Yeah, i'm not allowed on a patient floor without a beeper, like on a truck backing up.
A hat-tip to both the environ-mental left and the Saudis at the same time?
Win-win!
He's vowed to veto Phase IV of the Keystone Pipeline. Phases I-III have already been built and are in operation. Phase IV is a direct line segment from Alberta to SE Nebraska. One of the other phases already goes east from the same start point in ALberta and then directly south to proposed end point in Nebraska. I like how nothing I've ever read from the pro or con side states that Keystone is a 4 phase project and this last phase is what's being bitched about.
I don't know what my point is. I never knew any of this until I did some research on my own after a friend in the pipeline industry who hates Obama just kind made a statement that this whole controversy is really about nothing because the oil is already getting from Canada to the Gulf.
Well, it was a brilliant misdirection and seems to have kept the left at bay.
I did some reading.
Phase 4 seems to be pretty important and includes bringing some North Dakota fields into the pipeline system for the first time.
Environmentally speaking, wouldn't you rather have oil going through pipes -- which have good safety records -- rather than being transported on trucks, etc.?
This is one they might be able to swing an override on. I mean, if nothing else is popular right now, certainly low gas prices are.
"low"
Police officers are increasingly investigating criticisms made against them as "hate speech," according to Glenn Greenwald.
At least they're aware they're being criticized.
They're always aware of being criticized. But they tell themselves that everyone they are not currently beating for criticism worships them.
The goodthinkful must unconfirm the existence of thoughtcrime lest it occupy brainspace beside goodthink. Hatecrime prelabels badthink for unacceptance.
I'm not sure if this is more or less intelligible than.your.normal.writing.
Turning their backs on the mayor is hate speech, too.
At least they're aware they're being criticized.
Maybe all the critical comments should have been written pluperfect.
And here I was imagining Jim Morrison singing "The End" as a eulogy to the loss of the p.m. links.
CNN has a video for this.
Huh?
Referencing this I presume: http://jalopnik.com/this-is-th.....1677511538
yes.
Tacking on "hate speech" to anti-cop criticism is like putting lipstick on a pig.
Wait. Did I say something hateful?
What you did there was plainly visible
To repost something from the other thread, the dumbest thing you'll read this year (via Instapundit). I'm giving 50/50 odds that it's satire though.
The highlight:
Also
This just has to be parody, right?
Too long to be parody. A parodist would've thought they got the point across about a third of the way through that.
The thing that brings me to the "it's a parody" side is that she hadn't posted anything on the site before this, and her Twitter account is only 3 days old.
Something like the Sokal affair, perhaps.
If it's a parody then she didn't need to exaggerate much.
has to be a parody, or one of the most hardcore statists of all time, since no proggie i know would say that LGBTs are lesser than Cops.
NVM reading comprehension fail.
yeah this is real
and must be a proggie
Yes, clearly the work of a parotist.
She's just tired and shagged out following a prolonged squawk.
Seems to real. This is the logical progression of everything they have been saying. For example there are people that believe that only people with "power" can be racists.
She has a job writing legislation in her future.
She started with a premise -- hate is bad and should be punished -- and then thought through the logical consequences and realized, *gasp*, things she hates could cause her to be punished.
Quick! To the exemptions!
Reason 1,003,034 why I own guns.
Sorry, you're going to jail for saying that.
Obviously a parody.
Then she should move to one of those "civilized" Star Trek planets where everyone is the exactly the same and boring as hell.
It sure reads like one.
Daniel DeFoe's *Shortest Way With the Dissenters* was more subtle.
reads like a parody, that is.
Yeah. It is too humorless and earnest even for a parody. These asshole actually are this crazy.
I am about 90% sure it's over-the top satire - look at the list of speech he proposes to ban, for example.
So, you can advocate genocide against homophobes, but advocating genocide against LGBT people would land you in prison. This is because LGBT people are a vulnerable group in need of legal protections against hatred, whereas homophobes are most assuredly not, as they belong in prison.
Once again, I can't urge people like this enough to shout their ideas from the rooftops. Go on every TV show and do every interview you can. And please, please, proudly identify your political ideology at every turn.
"This just has to be parody, right?"
Dunno. Tony's posted dumber stuff right here.
I wouldn't go quite that far.
Shreek, however...
or mandalay, hes a fuckwit too
That's obviously a parody and a damn good one.
This is because LGBT people are a vulnerable group in need of legal protections against hatred, whereas homophobes are most assuredly not, as they belong in prison.
Hmm, seems a bit too honest...
If that wasn't a parody, neither were DeFoe's *Shortest Way* and Swift's *Modest Proposal.*
It's satire warning the U.S. about anti-free speech laws by looking to examples from the international community.
He literally says that it's a good thing Japan has taken steps to 're-educate the public.'
No way it's not a parody.
Sarc meter reads low
We have always had hateful bigots in our society and today is no different. These are the same people who were segregationists, who wanted to drive the Jews from society, who ostracized, beat or murdered homosexuals. They have just found different targets for their hate, but fundamentally the bigots are the same. I suppose it is a case of becoming the monster you are battling.
Make that point to one and step back and enjoy the show. They will come unhinged.
We should just start publishing the satire from the comments and declare ourselves sages.
Poe's Law.
He's confusing prisons (places of extended incarceration, rehabilitation optional) and penitentiaries which were supposed to both incarcerate and rehabilitate.
Sounds like he's confusing them with public schools.
Yes, that is clearly the source of their confusion.
No, simply one afactual manifestation of said confusion.
Such a long step from this to Cambodian re-education camps. So long. Not close at all.
New Boner same as the old Boner.
New boner - harder, longer, uncut.
Seek help from a mental health professional if you have a Boehner lasting more than 4 years.
2 interesting points in the vote breakdown:
-One rep voted for Rand Paul (a Senator) to be Speaker for the Dead.
-Trey Gowdy got one vote, but surprisingly was not on the list of Reps who voted against Boehner. I don't know much about Gowdy but he always struck me as the type to not suffer fools (Boehner) lightly.
President Obama has vowed to veto the Keystone pipeline project.
How will poor college kids get drunk now?
Have you heard of the PBR pipeline? Probably not.
With this?

Genny Screamers...the next morning was always interesting.
I remember my stepdad drinking Jenny Light by the case - I'm a lightweight but even I could plow through a six-pack with little effort. Which helped a lot during boring college vacations.
OTOH we lived not far from the brewery and when the wind was right, that amazing smell would float by.... but when the wind was wrong we got Kodak chemicals instead.
ahh lovely Rocha-cha
Only a teathuglican publication like Reason would leave out "Republican" from such a momentous headline, comrades!
Police officers are increasingly investigating criticisms made against them as "hate speech

A lot of US prosecutors?

I'm sorry to hear about your mom, Florida Man.
I'm impressed with the use of an ax though, absolute classic!

Totally normal.
It's the hair.
Jose Canseco before steroids?
He should have used an axe instead of an ax.
His mother may have survived had she just been spritzed with an odious douchebag cologne.
It was probably more humane to do her in with an ax though.
I'm torn. We had something special going in the spirit of revolt led by Spartacus in the other threads.
Meh.
/takes scoop of cereal.
Spartacus was defeated though.
Not just defeated. All those that were with Spartacus when he finally surrendered were crucified. Not in the quick half a day way that Jesus supposedly was but in the week long absolute agony way.
Probably someone posted this already in the past couple of days, but it has blown up on my FB feed causing massive angst, tears, and rending of garments among my SJW friends. Which means it's a pretty awesome article. So I am reposting for your pleasure.
"Microaggressions", "Trigger Warnings", and the New Meaning of "Trauma"
That was glorious. I don't know whether because of, or in spite of, the Chip Bok cartoon, but it was glorious.
I didn't RTFA, but seriously I will give people a reason to be traumatized.
I'm also equally capable of giving women a reason to call me an asshole. However they always seem to call it early
Read the article. It's worth your time, being as how you are so heteronormative.
Awesome, thanks! I'm going to pass it around.
Wait wait wait, are you telling me that the experts at Vox got something completely wrong, yet did so with unshakable confidence? Say it ain't so!
In 2003, congress passed a bill called the Prison Rape Elimination Act, which punished prisons that didn't make minimal efforts to keep their prisoners safe by withholdig 5% of their federal grants, starting in 2013.
As a result, Texas (home to 6 of the 10 rapiest prisons in the country) has a sad because they lost almost a million dollars for failing to comply with the act. But never fear! John Cornyn has proposed legislation that would eliminate any punishments for failing to comply with the law:
Concerns Rise Over US Anti-Prison Rape Law's Fate
It's a term that gets thrown around a lot, but I think we finally have a law here that actually deserves the term "pro-rape".

RULES FOR UVA FRATS = HIGHLIGHTS
Events
i. A minimum of 3 brothers must be sober and lucid at each fraternity function.
ii. The chapter must submit two formalized risk management plans to the Inter-Fraternity Council at the beginning of each semester.
Alcohol
a -Beer may be served, unopened in its original can.
b.Wine may be served upon request, poured visibly at the bar by a sober brother.
c.Pre-mixed drinks, punches, or any other common source of alcohol are prohibited.
d.At Tier I events, hard liquor may not be served unless the fraternity hires a bartender employed by a third-party licensed by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board in accordance with Virginia law
Security
a.At Tier I events, a security agent provided by an IFC-approved vendor must remain at the entry point throughout the duration of the function.
b.A printed list provided to the security agent by the fraternity must
exclusively
dictate approved guests for the function. At Tier II events, the fraternity must manage entry with a guest list
Notably missing from this list is, "What happens if you ignore The Rules"
I think these restrictions provide a wonderful case study in how you "Kill Things By Regulation"- make rules so onerous that you are guaranteed to violate them sooner or later, and consequently the cost of any action becomes so significant you choose to *do nothing*
Toilet moonshine still allowed!
That's the point, isn't it?
Frats own the houses, right? Is there anything stopping them from simply excusing themselves from the list of "approved" university student organizations and carrying on as usual?
Dont know about that. Some of the buildings are technically rented and are university owned-property.
The movie Old School was meant for training not entertainment.
Although = to your point...
I see no reason that these orgs couldn't choose to leave the campus residences and reorganize on some off-campus facility.
Some, like the 'nortorious' pi phi, have historic ties to their buildings, but still...
The "'nortorious' pi phi" owns its own house--or rather, they have a corporation (Montalto Corporation--look it up on the City of Charlottesville real estate tax assessment site) that owns it for them.
WHAT?! Not "No Girls Allowed"?
We had those rules when I was in college. It took a lot for us to get kicked off.
The final straw was the loss of the insurance policy.
i was going to add =
I was not a frat member @ my school in the 1990s, but was strongly 'associated' with one. They had similar rules, if somewhat more-loosely defined. Within their framework, they were still able to do almost everything they were wont to do = but there were definitely 'invite only' events where they had to hire security and barkeeps, and then there were always a few nominated "sober bros". I do not know to what degree these things were imposed on them due to prior flagrant behavior, or whether these were just legacy policy.
My point re: the UVA-specific rules, was the lack of clarity about what 'violations' would result in, and the panopticon effect of 'rules without known penalties'
I graduated college in 1992, and there were no rules at any house party. I read stuff like this and it blows my mind.
That being said, I would rather go to school now than then based on how easily girls give it up now. People were still afraid of AIDS back then, and girls walked around fully clothed to hide their fat from eating burgers and chicken wings. No salads at my school, and I never saw a girl at our gym.
I went to college when the drinking age was 18 so a frat party made sense.
Aren't 90% of the people at a frat party underage anyway? Seems like almost the entire party should be sober.
Are sororities bound by these rules?
no silly, you have to have a penis to rape duh, every good doublethink enlightened liberal knows that
Notably missing from this list is, "What happens if you ignore The Rules"
Double secret probation, obviously.
And a dead horse in the Dean's Office?
Maybe if they added a rule that each brother had to rub at least two out before any wimmen came over the rape factor would go down.
Fraternal Organization Agreement Addendum
The economy isn't the only thing mimicking an Ayn Rand novel: "Architecture is imploding".
http://www.forbes.com/sites/ju.....s-failing/
So what building will Gary Cooper blow up?
Not the one that looks like a big wedge of cheese, that is for sure.
I'm not sure the "just follow the rules and copy what other people used to do" solution proposed by that article is any more in the spirit of Ayn Rand than the excesses it complains about.
How about build things that fits people's tastes rather than constantly trying to dictate tastes to them?
No, Roark was pretty happy to dictate tastes to other people. He just actually knew what he was talking about.
True. But that is a book not reality. In reality, trying to dictate tastes usually turns into the kind of self indulgent crap that has caused the public to hate architects so much.
Roark knew what a customer wanted even when the customer did not until he showed them the design. He was like an idiot savant.
True. But they liked it. It was "wow, I never realized it could be so great" not "fuck you, you bourgeois philistine and y our vulgar capitalist desire for proportion and symmetry or decoration", which is what is going on now.
I agree the problem the guy is complaining about is very much Ayn-Rand-Villain type stuff. But his completely reactionary response is equally Ayn-Rand-Villain.
The solution to bad innovation is good innovation, not stasis.
It is because in the 1930s leftism took over the profession and turned it into a tool to advance the ideology. Leftism destroys everything it touches. They don't make buildings anyone likes or cares about anymore. They make crap designed to further a dying ideology. They also make building that express the deep hatred of people endemic to all leftism.
Modern architecture is an affront to civilization. Hugo railed against it in the 19th century and the stuff back then was superior to any shit we see today.
My buddy teaches architecture in a University and he would add unions are problematic as well as they would not build something complicated like once upon a time.
The signals of the West falling are everywhere.
Modern Architecture is great. It's post-Modern everything that's bad.
Post-modernism is simply the assertion that meaning is not intrinsic and thus the meaning of a particular "message" is dependent upon the context in which the communication occured.
There's lots of bad artists that use post-modernism to excuse their lack of ability, but claiming all post-modernism is bad is like claiming electric guitar is bad because you hate your neighbor's garage band.
I don't think that's post-modernism. Post-modernism doesn't treat reality as being real; that it's all perception. "It's all up to interpretation" can produce anything good.
Well again, you're using the version of post modernism expounded by people who don't really understand it and are just using it as an excuse.
Arguing that X can have multiple interpretations isn't the same as saying any interpretation of X is equally valuable.
Modern architecture sucks elk dick.
I don't mean grand projects per se (as some may be unique here and there by today's standards) but 'smart centers' and 'cine-plex' parks etc.
Atrocities.
When you say "Modern architecture sucks elk dick", did you intend "modern" in the sense of "recent" or in the sense of "of the modernist school"?
When you say 'elk dick' are you referring to elk living primarily within the boundary of a National Park or outside?
When you say 'sucks' are you referring to literal suction or the rhetorical fellatio type?
"Frank Gehry, the world's most famous architect, recently said that '98% of everything that is built and designed today is pure sh*t. There's no sense of design, no respect for humanity or for anything else.'"
Considering the low opinion I have for the works of Mr. Gehry, I found this somewhat amusing.
I'd like to hear more.
http://static.dezeen.com/uploa.....ehry-2.jpg
Here you go Cytotoxic. Ghery does work like that. Ugly, horrific shit is all it is.
At least it isn't dull...?
At least "boxes" are utilitarian.
HOLY SHIT I KNOW WHAT THIS IS. This looks EXACTLY like the artwork that Hexadecimal made when she seized the art program from the Principle's Office! REBOOT IS REAL
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT7a9qAnpPU
That is maybe the nerdiest reference I've seen this year. I approve.
I'm not sure if I'd enjoy working there (hard to tell just from the facade), but as an artistic statement, I actually quite like that one.
It's a building for alzhiemer's research, so the "The Persistence of Memory" look to it is actually kinda of brilliant.
Yes, Ghery is exactly the kind of self important assholes who has been foisting ugly, inhuman structures on the public. Ghery is a perfect example of why people hate architects and hate current architecture. His work is pure shit that should be torn down. There isn't a work he has ever done that the world wouldn't benefit from it being torn down.
Emmanuel Kant believed architecture was the lowest form of art.
basically, 'it keeps the rain out'. it is all simply a game to try and remain 'utilitarian' while playing some games with physics to make it look different.
Music was #1. You can't touch it. It appeals directly to our emotions.
Emmanuel Kant believed architecture was the lowest form of art.
That's a shame. Some of his other ideas were pretty interesting. I think he was one of the first people to put to paper thoughts about aliens. Specifically, would their moral laws be different than ours?
"Emmanuel Kant believed architecture was the lowest form of art.
That's a shame."
Well, as with everything the guy thought, he had a very detailed set of arguments why that was the case.
In short, the more 'useful' something is, the less it relies on purely aesthetic judgements. Architecture *does* something objective = it has a function. Holes in the roof might be 'pretty'... but they let the rain in. A screwdriver made of Gold might be beautiful, but it would be a shitty screwdriver.
Apparently poetry and music were the finest of all art forms because they relied purely on the effect on the mind of the subject. The merit of the former was that it required higher order thought; the merit of the latter was that it appeals directly to our emotions without need for thought.
That said = i don't think he thought architecture 'less than an art' just because he ranked other things 'higher' in a conceptual framework.
That is my $0.02 summary from a college course i took 20 years ago. Although i went back and re-read Critique of Pure whatever later on.
Interesting about Kant's view. It seems to be in line with Italian avant-garde artists and designers of the early to mid 20th century (furniture, appliances etc.) who valued function over form.
That is, creating something of useful value instead of beauty but no function.
That's where we got all these weird chairs, typewriters and so on.
Sigh.
I appreciate everyone's efforts but I'm in too much a funk to care.
Sigh.
'President Obama has vowed to veto the Keystone pipeline project.'
Sigh.
Party of no.
Sigh.
Maybe you should look at that picture of Boehner kissing Pelosi again. That'll cure your funk.
That was...special.
I shouldn't be allowed that close to Pelosi with a gavel in my hand...
yes, yes you should. for all the reasons you think you shouldnt
3 of the 4 phases of Keystone are up and running for a while now. All phases involve piping crude from O Canada to Murika. Phase 4 will happen eventually. If Obama isn't wielding his mighty pen, he's forced to look down and contemplate his vagina.

Here you go, old people. This was announced yesterday: Internet Archive MS-DOS Game Library.
Does it have TIE Fighter?
Alas, it does not; I checked. The Windows 95 version is elsewhere on the site for download (as opposed to in-browser emulation), but it's notoriously annoying to set up in a modern version of Windows.
Note to NPR - when covering death penalty cases, include info about the crimes of the inmates whose execution you're deploring. And mention the background of the lethal-injection issue. That sort of candid discussion will help people on both sides assess their views on this delicate issue.
My problem with the death penalty isn't because I think is wrong to kill a person who commits a horrible crime. My problem is that the government seems no better at making sure that the person sentenced to death is actually guilty of the crime they are being condemned for.
The problem with talking about the victim and the crime is that it makes it much harder to oppose the death penalty because you end up wanting some old school justice for the victims.
My problem with the death penalty is that it is a government program.
old school justice is the tort system
the criminal system was invented (by the british king) to create more taxes
I don't need that. For me it's not about the crime committed, it's about not trusting the state with that type of power.
You may not need it, but others might.
Nice!

Whoever said that pre-Code films mocked the government?
Along with Massacre, 42nd Steet, Footlight Parade and all those films with the NRA eagle at the beginning it doesn't look like Joe Breen had to force them to stop mocking the government.
Warner Bros was pretty hardcore for FDR, the other studios not so much. Some pre-codes mocked the govt, others didn't.
More like they mocked the government when Hoover was Prez but loved it when FDR became prez.
Among other things, Warner put out the pro-Stalin film Mission to Moscow
NPR had an interview with that POS Lynch from the NYC Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. Lynch walked all over the interviewer. I would have cut his mike the first time he did that.

Hey, way to setup a lose-lose situation. The mayor doesn't visit - whine; the mayor does visit - whine. Typical crybully mentality.
Not seeing it. His assessment is correct. Had DeBlasio not visited, he would've gotten flak, quite possibly from the same people upset that he did visit.
"People" is a collectivist notion- this is one individual who didn't want to be used in a political PR effort.
"People" is a collectivist notion- this is one individual who didn't want to be used in a political PR effort.
Hahaha. Don't be a smarmy douche. The statement wasn't even from Andrew Dossi. It was from his father. He has "people" and they're complaining for him.
Nothing Tonio said implied sucking state cock and you're just being a dickbag for the sake of being a dickbag. It's tiresome.
More NPR fun - another Wounded Warrior story, with a twist. This time it's a former military chaplain from a "fundamentalist" church. What he saw in Iraq traumatized him and challenged his faith. He went home changed for the worse in attitude and behavior. Finally he faced up to his demons, left the fundamenlist church and (of course) became an Episcopalian.
This presses so many NPR buttons - traumatized soldiers, the badness of fundamentalism, the importance of facing one's feelings, and this along with the Episcopal thing would stimulate their listeners to a climax.
What's wrong with facing you feelings?
Aren't episcopalians just catholics without a pope?
Splitters
You can't forget the divorce!
Episcopalians are Catholics without God.
It's like you've never met any American Catholics or something.
There's that Christian charity I've been hearing about. God bless you, Eddie!
