Five Mindbogglingly Stupid Government Tricks of 2014
It's hard to say that 2014 was a stoundout year for epic government screwups, scandals, and embarrassments. After all, H. L. Mencken commented decades ago that "every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under." He was absolutely right, but hardly original (as he no doubt would have conceded). That sad realization was already hoary with age then.
But it's true that government officials put the time in over the past 12 months to ensure that Mencken's words continue to ring true. Below, in no special order, are a few of the notable stupid government tricks of the year gone by.
Ferguson and America's internal army of occupation
Concerned civil libertarians and policy watchers, including Reason writers, long warned that law enforcement agencies look less every year like your neighborhood beat cop and more like the Russian army touring Ukraine. By and large, those warnings went unheeded by the public, most of whose members saw little to fear from the "thin blue line" they were assured stood between them and America's transformation into Somalia with good burger joints.
Then Ferguson happened. The controversial shooting of Michael Brown sparked protests in the Missouri community. In turn, police responded with a bizarre and intimidating display of heavy weapons, camouflage uniforms, and armored vehicles.
"If you don't want to get shot…just do what I tell you," Officer Sunil Dutta of the Los Angeles Police Department wrote in the Washington Post in response to those horrified by the display.
Despite such defenses, Missouri police pulled in their paramilitary horns as the Ferguson protests continued. But new incidents, including the videorecorded killing of Eric Garner by a New York City police officer, largely over untaxed cigarettes, kept police-civilian relations in the headlines across the entire country.
That debate continues. But military equipment continues to flow to police departments, including nearly 4,000 assault rifles just since the Ferguson riots.
The Secret Service loses its gloss
Wasn't there a time when the Secret Service had a reputation as an elite investigative and protective force? Sure there was! Charged with foiling counterfeiters and shielding V.I.P.s including the president from harm, Secret Service agents were once cheesy movie-worthy.
That image may be a tad tarnished after this year.
It didn't help the Secret Service that a White House aide was implicated in carousing with prostitutes in Colombia—nobody expects politicians and their minions to refrain from engaging in friendly relations with constituents, friendly foreigners, or strangers they meet in dark alleys. But the Secret Service itself was dinged when it turned out that its employees not only like sex (honestly, so what?), but that, more seriously, they run out on the tab when it comes time to pay up for their fun.
That's not cool.
But a taste for booze and hookers didn't implicate the Secret Service's core competencies. Screwing up on protecting the White House did that. In September, Iraq war veteran Omar Gonzalez jumped the White House fence armed with a knife and got all the way into the East Room before he was stopped.
Whoops!
Now the question isn't whether the Secret Service has screwed the pooch (and skipped on the check). It's whether it's been asked to do too much, or just got competency cooties from its association with the gormless Department of Homeland Security.
The Veterans Health Administration—deadlier than an IED
The creeping U.S. welfare state may lack the cradle-to-grave coverage that's bankrupting our European cousins in such continental style, but federal agencies are trying. The Department of Veterans Affairs, through the Veterans Health Administration, certainly has the grave part down.
By gaming waiting lists, and hiding the number of vets who were actually in line for health care, VA officials jazzed up their performance reviews and qualified for bonuses. And, oh yeah, they killed people. Even the VA's own assistant inspector general concedes the lethal connection.
Veterans certainly deserve better treatment than they've been receiving. Unfortunately, this year's scandal is only the latest evidence that the federal department created to assist them isn't up to the job. Year after year, the quality of the health care provided to those who have served in the armed forces has proven substandard and sometimes dangerous. It's just that this year that mistreatment took on a deliberate air.
CDC's handling of Ebola was almost as scary as the disease
Speaking of health care, when the Ebola scare hit this year (and yes, it's still a scourge in Africa) the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the agency responsible for leading the U.S. response to such health threats, responded with guidelines that were "absolutely irresponsible and dead wrong," in the words of an infectious disease expert.
Uh oh.
Those guidelines contributed to infection—Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where two nurses caught Ebola from a patient, followed them—but fortunately no deaths. The CDC finally corrected its error in October by essentially cribbing new guidelines from Doctors Without Borders, the private organization based in France that's the recognized international leader when it comes to coping with the world's nastier diseases.
The very public screwup of the Ebola response followed the CDC's complete mishandling of samples of anthrax and bird flu. In two separate incidents, CDC personnel were accidentally exposed to the first disease, while a dangerous dose of the second was mistakenly shipped to a laboratory expecting something a bit less virulent.
The CDC's tendency in recent years to allow itself to be distracted by public health bugaboos of the moment, such as tobacco, got much of the blame for its bungled response to a true health threat.
Then again, it could have been worse. The Department of Homeland Security turned out to have ill-considered stockpiles of expired and misplaced supplies for dealing with the sort of pandemic that Ebola happily did not become. And while the CDC might be a bit butter-fingered with its samples it didn't follow the lead of the National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration by forgetting about vials of smallpox, dengue, influenza, Q fever, and ricksettsia in an unused storeroom.
The Social Security Administration catches up on very old paperwork
Sometimes, the Social Security Administration (SSA) overpays benefits to recipients, and then needs to grab the overpayments back. Social Security officials are also a little bit behind on their clerical duties. Read "little" to mean "decades." So the SSA then enlists the IRS to help it go after people for debts incurred by a government paperwork screwup decades ago.
In at least some cases that made the headlines in 2014, the government intercepted tax refunds to adults because, bureaucrats claimed, they benefited from Social Security overpayments made to their now-dead parents in the 1960s and 1970s.
After suitably negative press and widespread public condemnation, Social Security announced a "halt to further referrals under the Treasury Offset Program to recover debts owed to the agency that are 10 years old and older."
So all's well that ends well. For now.

Hey – it’s a free country!
Really? I am so taking it then! I’d like another one or two for my collection – Germany and maybe Ghana?
Germany? Hell yeah!
Blonde hair, blue eyes, and a constant desire to stomp on my nads? I’d take German women any day of the week!
Not to mention the world’s best beer and wine, legal prostitution, and cars.
Can cannabis cure Ebola?
http://au.ibtimes.com/articles…..KVsu3ulfog
Ebola studies have concluded that the virus kills by cytokine storm which fatally affects the human body’s immune system. Medical cannabis advocates believe the anti-inflammatory and antiretroviral properties of the substance can reduce the severity of cytokine storm.
Can cannabis cure death?
Pot Zombies Kill Entire Population of Zimbabwe!
I think we may be going just a bit too far with this whole “Can cannabis cure” thing.
This
Medical cannabis advocates are lying idiots who imagine weed can do all sorts of things it cannot do and who actively attempt to deny the possibility of any negative side effects to long term pot usage.
Pot should be legal because people should be allowed to put what they want in their own bodies, but pot advocates have lost their minds.
This. A thousand times this! For years my position of legalizing all drugs has been “So, some people want to get high and may ruin their lives. This is a reason to ashcan all our civil liberties, why exactly?”
The “Pot could solve all our problems” people discredit the legalization argument because, frankly, they should like they’ve been smoking too much pot.
I agree. All it takes is for some “scientist” to say “No it doesn’t. My groupy pre-med students did some research I put my name on.” That is the end of the conversation.
Who cares if it is good for me? Pot smokers smoke pot because they like it. End of story. They should be allowed to like it and enjoy it.
I don’t know if they’re lying, but the idiot part seems to often be true.
I once got tired of listening to some stupid stoner coworker rattling on about how smoking pot is so much better for you than cigarettes because corporations put poisons in the latter and pot is like, natural and from the earth, man! When I pointed out that the lungs don’t care what particulate matter is going into it (cigarettes, car exhaust, etc), it still increases cancer, the hippie wouldn’t accept it because it didn’t fit his stupid narrative. I wasn’t even trying to make any sort of case to ban it (because if we banned pot for that reason, we should ban everything that increases your cancer risk, which is a hell of a lot) just sick of listening to his claptrap.
Why do you hate ‘Murica, Tuccille?!
I have to agree with your alt-text. My family gets its insurance through the exchange. When my son broke his arm this summer I learned that there are no orthopedics specialists in my state that take the exchange insurance. Zero. This was not the case at the beginning of the year, but they all dropped the plans, presumably because of low payouts.
So it was an out-of-network expense. Thanks guys.
And after one year, none of the plans were renewed. So we all have to reapply for new coverage. Thanks again.
And there was no income level that would allow me to simply purchase coverage for my whole family without running the kids through the state first to see if we qualify for medicaid or other state aid. (we don’t) So tack on another delay to the whole thing while we wait for a bureaucrat to check something that I didn’t need or want them to check. So thanks for that.
And only after that is complete can I find out the cost of plans for my whole family. So I kind of have to start all over.
And the cost is up. A lot. A whole, whole lot. So thanks for that.
But you have insurance! That’s what matters, right? Praise Obama!
And let us remember this point. While people like Paul Krugman proclaim Obamacare a success based on enrollments, they conveniently ignore the fact that any meaningful metrics should be based on healthcare provided, not just signed up for.
It doesn’t matter if you get better! The only thing that matters is that the government cares enough to force you to pay for insurance!
How can you not understand? Give us more money, then you’ll understand!
The problem is that people confuse access to health care with actual health. As if a fat, smoking drinker will immediately become a svelte, clean lunged teetotaler. In truth he’ll still be a fat, smoking drinker, but at great expense.
There are other options.
http://www.chministries.org/
This one is specifically for Christians, but there’s similar organizations for everyone.
THIS is what people used to do before employer provided healthcare. The were called mutual aid societies.
Back when health care was purchased by the person who had to pay for it and costs were more under control.
I am struck every time I go to the dentist that they want another x-ray. When I point out that the one I have is still recent, they point out that insurance will pay for it. I decline unless I believe it is time for a newer one.
An example of cost non-control thought, it is not whether you actually need it, but rather can you get insurance to pay for it and provide income to the dentist.
You know this same Cr@p goes on in every medical area.
I went in for a cleaning and they wanted to do an x-ray. I refused. The doc came in and told me if I didn’t submit to the x-ray he wouldn’t do the cleaning. He used liability as an excuse. What he really meant was he wanted to fleece me for another $150. I sat in the chair for about 5 minutes weighing the ass-pain of getting another dentist, making another appointment and driving another 50 mile round trip against the $150 and let him do it.
However, on the way out, I assured him I’ll NEVER be back.
Funny, I recently went to the dentist to see about getting a cap on a tooth. Buy the time I left there my head was spinning with all of the stuff he wanted to do to my mouth.
All the while he was talking about how to spread all of these things over 3 years so the insurance would cover it all.
I’m scheduled to go back next week to formulate an action plan. I’m going to ask for a cleaning and a cap, and I will just leave if he wants to do more.
I was at the urgent care clinic this week. Not quite as bad, but interesting. I had shallow cut my arm on a broken bit of ceramic and needed stitches. However, I couldn’t provide proof that I had had a teatnus shot in the last 10 years. So they had to give me the shot or they would refuse to treat me. So I could drive away, still bleeding, and find another urgent care, or submit to the shot.
(The nurse smiles, just be fore she sticks me, and says “Just so you know, this’ll hurt you more than it’ll hurt mt. Good luck!” Jab.)
I feel your pain. Last year we got basic insurance for the family through the exchange. Cost more, covered less and our deductibles were higher (way higher).
Then this year the provider dropped out of the network. They rejoined but all their rates were way higher. Now coverage costs way, way, way more.
And there was no income level that would allow me to simply purchase coverage for my whole family without running the kids through the state first to see if we qualify for medicaid or other state aid.
Reminds me of how the VA (up until this year) required yearly reporting of income and assets so they could determine if you qualified for no cost care, if you didn’t automatically qualify. The income limits were close to poverty (something like 125%) and the co-pays were both ridiculously low and flat rate but there was still no option to waive the financial disclosure and just opt for co-pays.
I, too, feel your pain. My husband and I are in our early 50s and in good health – neither of us are on any medications (a little amazing, when almost all of our friends and coworkers who are our age seem to be on something). We’ve had a high-deductible plan and an HSA for some time – $4000 deductible with 100% coverage afterwards. Since we’re both non-smokers, our premiums were pretty reasonable – $490/mo (our college-age son is still on our plan, or it might be less). Well, up until this year, since we are no longer grandfathered into our old plan. This year our deductible went up to $6000 and our premiums are now $752/mo. Our insurance broker tells us that if we choose to keep this same plan, our deductible could well be $10,000 and our premiums well over $1,000/mo next year. We’d go to the exchanges but he says we would pay much, much more for the same type of coverage.
So yeah…thanks for that.
Thank Jonathan Gruber who admitted there were never any cost controls in Obamacare because the primary goal was to get as many people as possible ‘insured’ regardless of the cost.
The question then becomes, of course, how these poor people who are technically ‘insured’ are supposed to actually avail themselves of medical care when the deductibles alone wind up being half their annual income because no one bothered to control for costs.
I guess this is why I’m not a professor at MIT. I’m just not smart enough to comprehend the wondrous glory of the Gruberite healthcare plan.
What’s the problem? You just fine the poor people for not being able to afford a plan on the exchange. That’ll get ’em to buy some insurance.
Holy freaking shit! That is some expensive fucking insurance.
How in the shitting shit do you manage?
The $490/mo premium wasn’t an undue hardship; our kids are all grown, except for the one still in college and our business is doing reasonably well – at least for now. The 50% premium increase is a little more problematic, although we can handle it. But more than $1000/mo with a $10K deductible? I have no idea what we’re going to do next year, to be perfectly honest.
Travel to another country for any medical care. Routine care can be quite inexpensive and superior to what you get here. Just have the minimum of coverage, if possible.
“I have directed an immediate halt to further referrals under the Treasury Offset Program to recover debts owed to the agency that are 10 years old and older pending a thorough review of our responsibility and discretion under the current law to refer debt to the Treasury Department.”
Emphasis added. “I’ll be back.”
Just add it to the Medicaid Estate Recovery program.

police officer’s union doesn’t technically count as a real union
National Coalition of Public Safety Officers, part of the Communications Workers of America
Teamsters Law Enforcement League
Not to mention International Union of Police Associations, which is it’s own union under the AFL-CIO umbrella, SEIU which represents large swaths of public employees, and then there’s conventional public sector unions like AFSCME.
Police unions are completely mainstream Big Labor.
Curse you and your speediness!

No, Tony admits I’m not paid by the Kochs. According to him, this is actually worse than if I were paid by the Kochs because they get my services for free.
Tony is the gift that keeps on giving.
Since LIBERTY is essential to my SAFETY, and Tony is a threat to my LIBERTY, can I “wack” him in self defense?
PLEASE!
The “Bush Doctrine” says we can act preemptively you know.
They will TELL you what to do! Howz dat fer communication!
By their own admission, they only kill the ones who don’t listen the first time.
CWA’s traditional membership has been in long term decline for forty years so the they’ve moved into new areas to keep the dues flowing.
Yeah, I’d love some prog to explain how the FOP shielding a shitbird is so totally different than AFSCME shielding a shitbird.
Also, watching the NYPD petulantly whine about how dangerous their jobs are because two cops were killed in three years has actually made me sympathize with De Blasio.
If his city is filled with whiny, useless cowards like the NYPD, it must be a tremendously difficult job.
But they’re an ARMY in a WARZONE, Irish.
Never forget that.
Which is actually true, in a way. Inconvenient statistics showed that, during several periods of the War in Iraq, it was SAFER to be a soldier in the sand box than an civilian in the U.S.. Not a LOT safer, but?
Kinda messed with the “Bush lied, kids died” narrative (which was almost entirely bushwa anyway) so it didn’t get a lot of airplay?.
That statistic is more sensitive to the total number of troops in country than the level of violence. For instance, having a shit ton of Pac clerks on the fobs, who have no chance of being killed, in country makes the overall casualty rate go down, but that does not make it any less dangerous for the few infantymen who actually make contact with the enemy.
“…actually made me sympathize with De Blasio.”
Jeebus! And I thought killing unarmed men was the worst thing imaginable.
Is there anything at all that’s redeemable about NYC?
The place seems like a pile of shit that Satan Himself keeps eating and then shitting back out again. Also, there are dinosaurs. But the dinosaurs are made of shit.
The museums are interesting. The public library is, I’m told, a first rate research tool, once you’ve figured out how it works (I’m a non resident, and when I visited it was clear that browsing in the stacks was discouraged if not impossible). The restaurants range from abysmal to first rate, so you CAN eat well. The financial sector actually works fairly well, when the government hasn’t screwed around with it (often at its own request, go figure). Good music is available if you know where to look. If there isn’t a shop selling what you are looking for, it probably aint legal.
Too bad the residents are determinedly Lefty Head Blind.
But what about the shit dinosaurs?
I can’t bear to read it. Got any good gossip, Reason? How about a cultural survey of 2014, including Christian Siriano’s latest line and best kitten calendars?
2014 was the most millenial year ever!
Did that get polled?
A sperm slipped out of that astronaut’s condom.
I thought that was Pro L releasing a python into NYC?
He bowlegged.
How does “cops getting military or military style weapons and equipment that they don’t actually use to kill innocent people (yet, anyway)” rate on this list? It shouldn’t.
So, not to say, “I told you so” to all the folks who have no concept of what it means to manage risk, but how did that whole Ebola pandemic play out?
What’s the American death count up to now?
Thank the Ebola Czar.
All praise Dear Leader!
The Ebola response was one of the few (if not only) things Obama was responsible (and correct) about. I’ll give credit where due, despite his performance in just about everything else.
Lets be honest, FdA, Obama doesn’t want to catch ebola either.
You’re continuing to be either obtuse or disingenuous on this topic.
Oh really? How so?
How many Americans have died? How many caught it?
Dubai’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display is as balls out crazy as you’d imagine.
I WANT TO LIVE IN DUBAI SO BAD OH MY GOD.
Good god, why?
Apparently Russian Prime Minister thinks awesome fireworks displays and tiger ownership make up for all the horribly oppressive policies of the Dubai government.
Yeah but bright lights and tall buildings.
It looks like most people are too busy recording the fireworks to actually watch them.
Mostly for the money. I fugure if I can rob just ONE guy, I’ll be set for several years.
Seems like a good place to pull an Oceans 11. Who wants in?
Do they still cut the thieves hands off over there?
You should see what they do to rapists. . .
I WANT TO LIVE IN DUBAI SO BAD OH MY GOD.
Like your average libertarian’s fireworks display, I’ll assume the fireworks contained the ashes of the prior year’s expired orphan slaves.
Fill in the blank, Thomas Piketty edition: “I do not think it is the government’s role to decide … “
Before you get excited, its because he thinks they should be more busy controlling the economy than wasting time on decadent, bourgeois glorification of citizens for individual achievement.
Besides, he’s just trying to one-up Sartre

Man turns in stray animal to animal shelter.
Shelter will not let the man leave until he shows ID.
Man shows his “sovereign citizen” papers.
Cops are called.
You know how this ends.
Ah. Good. Great.
Yet another reason nobody should ever leave their house, ever. We should all just work from home for $86 an hour and buy alfa-Romeos that we’ll never drive because the cops will kill us and take them.
Fuck this. I’m getting despondent.
Prosecutors said Lawrence had obvious anger issues and often expressed anti-government views.
So therefore it’s a good shoot I guess.
How many nut punches is this now?
Yeah, happy new year, or something.
Getting shot to death over turning in a stray animal. jesus h christ.

“The controversial shooting of Michael Brown”
By this time, given the witnesses who said it was a perfectly legitimate shoot, given Brown was just leaving the scene of a robbery he committed, then I would say by now the burden is on the people who claim the shooting was wrong. Maybe some new (credible this time) evidence will turn up that the cop shot Brown in the back, etc., but until then I’m not dying on this particular hill.
OT: Sad story

After the ‘terrible, terrible incident,’ a family faces observers’ commentary and a 2-year-old’s questions about where his mom went.
fta:“An inquisitive 2-year-old boy reached into the purse, unzipped the compartment, found the gun and shot his mother in the head,” Rutledge said. “It’s a terrible, terrible incident.”
That’s too bad. Not a fan of off body carry.
Me either. Also, what kind of 2 year old can pull a trigger on a real pistol? My wife can barely use my .45
Good point.
Maybe she killed herself, and this is just the spin the anti-gun nuts put on the story.
That’s a good question. I would love to know the make and model of the gun. My kids are physically unable to fire my handguns.
Yeah, he was unable to unzip the pocket the gun was in, pull it out, fire it, and hit her in the head? That’s incredible.
It’s worse in Africa.

A co-worker brought that story up to me recently, and that was my first question as well. I also question whether the 2 year old knew how to flip off the safety.
Me too.
And by Not a Fan, I mean don’t ever fucking do it. Ever.
I don’t want to speak ill of the dead, but, that was incredibly fucking stupid.

In regards to “Ferguson and America’s internal army of occupation”
Did people forget the Rodney King riots? People had caused massive property damage and people were killed due to rioting. These are the same like-mind people rioting in Ferguson and other parts of the country in the name of Michael Brown/Eric Garner. The paramilitary presence of the police is a response to catastrophic events caused by people on welfare who feel the world owes them something.

Wrong. Only when pulled over must you show a driver’s license or if in a drinking establishment to show proof of age. Otherwise, you need only provide your name, age and address when confronted by a law enforcement officer.
