Officials with the Charlotte, N.C., city government fired fire investigator Crystal Eschert after she posted on the killing of Michael Brown on her personal Facebook page. Eschert, who did not identify herself as a city employee, referenced another shooting near Ferguson and asked why President Barack Obama, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and others did not take a stand on it.

Well I guess if you can get fired from a private firm (not that I agree with the city gov) for saying racial charged shit why not on the public side. Too drunk off Christmas parties to go into detail so I'll repost my beer review.

A: Poured into a gold lipped Belgium ale glass. Head is off white like a 1954 vintage grand wizards hood, frothy. Pours an amber/orange with heavy carbonation.
S: Citrus notes play off the nose like a young Mozart's symphony. Grapefruit, pine, orange and cascade hops bring up the front. Briess Carapils malt, Briess Caramel and 200 year old wolf pussy bring up the back end.
T: The front of the tongue is like a million shorthorn steer stampeding across the tongue with hooves made of dark chocolate. Middle of the tongue taste like a 16th century cobbler's shop and the back side is pocket aged "Kings" candy cigarettes.
M: Medium bodied. Raw egg whites and last nights Bud Light/Taco bell early morning "beer puddle" shits round this category off.
O: I would buy again if it was available in my area on a regular basis but won't seek it out.

I completely agree but unfortunately it seems like it doesn't work that way on the private or public side. Smartest thing to do if you want to keep your job is to use social media to keep in touch with friends and family. Not make political statements. Not saying its right. It just is what it is.

In general I support the right of free association - including businesses.

*Government* agencies becomes a difficult case to decide. On the one hand - freedom of speech (doesn't come without consequences/needs to be protected from government intrusion) vs freedom of association (do I want openly serving Klan members working in local government?).

My old lady has got me watching this show "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmern on Netflix. Apparently, he goes around every inch of the globe tasting animal dick and balls. I didn't think he was ever going to find work after he killed that black kid in Florida.

I have a hard time understanding how, if public employees have a first amendment right to say that they hope that assassins succeed in killing Reagan the next time they try (as the Supreme Court held that they do), they don't have a first amendment right to comment seriously, on their own time, on their personal Facebook account, on public policy matters.

Actually, that's a lie. I would only have a hard time understanding it if I weren't aware of the "THAT'S RACIST" exception to the first amendment.

It seems that Free speech is only allowed once ratified by a court.

I agree with right-to-work policies--that an employee can be fired for whatever reason an employer chooses. However, when the government is the employer, and when a situation is politically charged, employees should not be penalized for the side they take on that political issue. At least as long as the bureaucracy is so large as it is today, such that government employees cannot be changed out effectively, there should be a clemency for government employees with an opposing opinion.
