    The Future!

Plasma Pulse is an easy-to-deploy technology that uses vibrations, or electrically generated plasma impulses to reduce viscosity, increase permeability and improve flow of oil and gas to the surface for extraction. The technology is designed to improve production costs effectively and without resorting to acidization, hydrofracking or other environmentally harmful processes.

    http://www.marketwatch.com/sto.....2014-12-11

    1. The Other Kevin   10 years ago

Indeed, Plasma Pulse Technology (PPT) is a weapon of sorts-one that could bridge the divide between oil and gas producers on one hand and environmentalists and regular citizens who are concerned that the toxic chemicals used in the process will pollute groundwater.

I think the biggest concern of environmentalists is preventing hydrocarbons from leaving the ground at all.

      1. Cytotoxic   10 years ago

Yup. PPT won't make that big a difference until the next recession, then it will make it a lot easier to rescind these awful bans in NY, Quebec, and New Brunswick.

    2. Warrren   10 years ago

Is there anything California won't do to kill jobs?

Anyway this plasma enema thing sounds great and will hopefully cause greenies to shit their pants over how they've lost another avenue to attack energy harvesting.

      3. mauricegirodias   10 years ago

Can't speak of this technology per se, but it's interesting that many of the ND drillers are using very different techniques to extract oil--stuff like ceramics, longer laterals, gasfrac, etc. They've really upped their barrels per day per well from five years ago. Hope at least a few states (i.e., ND+TX) are still allowed to innovate.

  11. Grand Moff Serious Man   10 years ago

Neil deGrasse Tyson is kind of an asshole

On Christmas morning, Tyson, the director of New York's Hayden Planetarium, took to Twitter to troll those celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Tyson wrote "On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642." The tweet set off an Internet firestorm and was retweeted nearly 15,000 times in less than an hour.

Tyson's tweet not only plays on the fact that Newton, the inventor of modern physics was believed to be born on December 25 but that Jesus Christ almost certainly wasn't. The date does not appear in the New Testament and early theologians seemed to think that Jesus was born in the spring.

The winter date for the holiday may have eventually been adopted to coincide with existing pagan festivals as part of an effort to convert non-Christians. The astrophysicist played on this theme in a tweet that followed, writing "Merry Christmas to all. A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA)."

But he presents science in a way that is easy for stupid people to digest!

      1. Grand Moff Serious Man   10 years ago

But more importantly, his digs at conservatives and Christians allow the 'I Fuckin' Love SCIENCE' people to engage in some very important social signaling, without which they would be directionless sad-sacks of meat yearning to be told what to think and do.

Because nothing is more important in life than feeling smarter than your Republican in-laws or coworkers.

        1. Episiarch   10 years ago

I've noted a very strong correlation between people who like to post links to I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE and people who are retarded animists who don't actually get science at all. I wonder why that is.

          1. Zeb   10 years ago

You mean science isn't just looking at cool pictures?

            1. Dweebston   10 years ago

More to the point, really. Science evangelism is the worst part of both magisteria.

    3. Grand Moff Serious Man   10 years ago

Of course, Isaac Newton was a devout Christian that was more passionate about theology, Bible studies and even alchemy than science.

In any case, I like it when morons on the left think it's somehow edgy to mock Christians but racist and out of line to criticize Islam, as Bill Maher found out.

      1. Carl ?s the level   10 years ago

Indeed, perhaps the following has been taken out of context and I've been bamboozled, but Newton seems like a shaky foundation upon which to troll:

Opposite to godliness is atheism in profession, and idolatry in practice. Atheism is so senseless and odious to mankind, that it never had many professors.

Can it be by accident that all birds, beasts, and men have their right side and left side alike shaped, (except in their bowels); and just two eyes, and no more, on either side of the face; and just two ears on either side of the head; and a nose with two holes; and either two forelegs, or two wings, or two arms on the shoulders, and two legs on the hips, and no more? Whence arises this uniformity in all their outward shapes but from the counsel and contrivance of an Author?

[...] We are, therefore, to acknowledge one God, infinite, eternal, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, the Creator of all things, most wise, most just, most good, most holy. We must love him, fear him, honour him, trust in him, pray to him, give him thanks, praise him, hallow his name, obey his commandments.

    4. Ted S.   10 years ago

Is that 25 December Old Style or New Style? The UK and colonies didn't start using the Gregorian calendar until the 1750s.

      1. Grand Moff Serious Man   10 years ago

It's convoluted to be sure, but he was born December 25th on the Old Style calendar which translates to January 4th of the New Style dating used today.

He also curiously died right at the time they made that transition from the Old Style to the New Style so he died in 1726 by their contemporary calendar but actually 1727 when you adjust it to the modern one.

        1. Warrren   10 years ago

Is Jesus New School or Old School? East Coast or West Coast?

    5. Suthenboy   10 years ago

Kinda nothin, Tyson is a solid gold 24 fucking carat asshole. Also a global warmer which makes his claim of being a scientist more than a little questionable.

Way to be a dick Neil.

      1. Raven Nation   10 years ago

SGU posted on their FB page that Tyson's tweet ignited a "pious outburst." So, Tyson tweets with a design to provoke an outburst and, when that happens, this proves what, exactly?

    6. Carl ?s the level   10 years ago

Moar Tyson: "If we had 12 fingers, I wonder whether the Bill of Rights ? would have been 12 amendments long"

So tweets Neil deGrasse Tyson. This is a plausible hypothesis, and might often explain why there are ten of this or twenty of that or a hundred of something else. But:

The hypothesis turns out not to be particularly likely as to the Bill of Rights ? there actually were 12 amendments originally proposed by the First Congress; it's just that the first two weren't ratified right away (one never was, and the other was ratified only 200 years later, and became the Twenty-Seventh Amendment)

      1. Suthenboy   10 years ago

Before I click that link I am gonna take a guess....Neil has no particular love for the notion of natural rights. Rights-hating is kind of required for progressives, isn't it?

    7. Fluffy   10 years ago

Anyone who thinks this is being a dick is an incredibly oversensitive pussy and loser.

      What the fuck, people?

It's just a clever little joking hate tip to Newton.

Now the pig's head thing - THAT'S being a dick.

      1. Zeb   10 years ago

Yeah, this. Those are all just facts that people always point out at Christmas, even people who like Christmas. There are lots of reasons not to like Tyson too much, but this really isn't one. Pointing out that Jesus almost certainly wasn't born on 25 December is really not an insult to anyone or anyone's beliefs.

For tHose idiots who complained I did. Not immediately respond to the below entry on police retaliation for somebody who testified against officers sorry but some of us have a life and it is Christmas however I have now responded with my own account of being retaliated against for testifying about an officer for using excessive force and how I remedied it - The best remedy is always to sue as I've said I've gotten substantial redress from civil courts and I love the process

I'm seeing still more public support for us and rallies etc. and to reiterate yet again we are winning against the forces of hate and injustice and as usual we are arcing towards love justice and truth and the American public is fed up and are supporting us in a massive backlash

Booya To Moonbeam for pardoning nonviolent drug offenders that is one way that we can fight the war on drugs or at least governors can

The media protest industry has gotten so ridiculous as to report on a national basis now , a shooting where an officer shoots some ass munch who points a gun at him as if this is somehow newsworthy and of course must report on it as Reuters did by saying it was a white officer and a black male - oh noes!!!

How entirely not shocking that when people are empowered to defend themselves and do so against criminal ass munches just as I note cops do on many occasions it helps deter and reduce crime boo Ya for Detroit residents

    1. The artist known Dunphy   10 years ago

This is a horrible story the police shot him mentally ill man which of course is always unjustified and a police overreaction and furthermore he only had a knife and everybody knows that knives are dangerous enough to justify a shooting and they should always shoot to wound if they do

unlike reason anti-police bigots I just can't knee-jerk and decide that this shooting was unjustified for Pete's sake they won't even tell me if it was a white cop and a black suspect so I don't know if it's automatically unjustified. Derp!!!

      http://www.chicagotribune.com/.....story.html

We are winning!!!!!!! The public backlash afainstvantipolive bigots is gaining steam

And to give credit where credit is due even to Epi, he is entirely right about those people post links do I fucking love science!

Mauritanian journalist sentenced to death for 'insulting' Mohammed

Mauritania on Thursday condemned a man to death for "insulting the prophet," a human rights group said, a day after the country opened the trial of an anti-slavery activist.

Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mkhaitir, 28, was arrested a year ago for writing an article about the Prophet Mohammad and the caste system, an extremely sensitive subject in a West African country with deep social and racial divisions.

He claims his article has been misinterpreted.

The prosecution asked for the death penalty to be carried out in accordance with Islamic sharia law and recommended he be shot. Mauritania, a poor country straddling Arab and black Africa, last applied the death penalty in 1987.

All he said was that piece of halibut was fit for Mohammed.

    1. Suthenboy   10 years ago

Chattel slavery is very common in Mauritania. It is no surprise that an anti-slavery activist would end up in front of a firing squad.

I'm still waiting for a source document, where a PD IIU unit references PUNISHING AN OFFICER FOR SUSPENDING HIM BY PLACING HIM ON SUSPENSION WITH PAY

    It has never happened.

Admin leave (try a wiki article even...) is routinely given in numerous circs. I have NEVER been suspended, and I have gotten admin leave several times.

After a guy I was negotiating with, while standing about 3 feet from him, blew his head off, I got ADMIN LEAVE (with pay duh...)

And yet, in order to work with a Federal Task Force, they asked if I had ever been suspended?

    The answer was no.

    It is NOT a suspension.

So, the officer who was given a medal for trying to save a babies life by entering a dangerous scene and giving him/her CPR and after which the baby died and who thus got Admin Leave because she was so bereft was "SUSPENDED WITH PAY?"

    lol

From Wikipedia's entry on ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE:

Administrative leave is a temporary leave from a job assignment, with pay and benefits intact.[1] Generally, the term is reserved for employees of non-business institutions such as schools, police, and hospitals.

The definition of Administrative leave may vary by institution.

Individuals may also be eligible for administrative leave for various reasons including: bereavement, jury/court appearances, military leave, internal reviews and investigations. [2]

In academic settings, administrative leaves are provided for the same purpose as research/study leaves, i.e., to allow individuals to improve themselves academically and to engage in research to foster their effectiveness as teachers and scholars. [3]

An employee may be placed on administrative leave when an allegation of misconduct is made against an employee, either by a coworker, student or parent, an alleged victim or police officer. During the leave, employers may investigate the situation before determining an appropriate course of action. Administrative leave does not in itself imply that an employee will be disciplined or even that an allegation is credible, which is why pay and benefits are not discontinued. It simply allows the employer to investigate the situation, maintaining the employee's present status while at the same time removing them from the environment, eventually leading to either their return or termination.[citation needed]

  16. The artist known Dunphy   10 years ago

Other reasons that an employee may be placed on administrative leave may include protecting sensitive information or resources or to remove an employee who may be behaving disruptively pending assessment of a situation.[4]

Police officers are routinely placed on administrative leave after a shooting incident while an investigation is conducted, without implying fault on the part of the officer.[citation needed]

Note: people are suspended for CAUSE.

People are NOT placed on admin leave for CAUSE

    it is not a suspension

    hth
But disingenuous journalists will continue to report "an officer was suspended with pay after he did X" to imply that they are not going to be REALLY punished for it.

NOBODY HAS EVER RECEIVED THE PUNISHMENT OF "SUSPENSION WITH PAY"

IT IS NOT DISCIPLINE, IT IS NOT PUNISHMENT

    smooches

Note that "rape culture" is getting as thoroughly vitiated as based on absurd unproven premises JUST like all these stupid protesters against this alleged wave of unjustified police violence are getting completely laffed at by the general public who are happily ripping these assmunches apart!

I know two cops in NY who are very much not winning.

    3. d3x / dt3   10 years ago

So I don't understand. You're saying he was on administrative leave and suspended with pay?

  18. The artist known Dunphy   10 years ago

Note also: many agencies AUTOMATICALLY and WITHOUT ANY DISCRETION TO DO OTHERWISE ***MUST*** per policy PLACE ON OFFICER ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE IF THEY

  19. The artist known Dunphy   10 years ago

SHOOT SOMEBODY, OR SOMEBODY DIES IN THEIR CUSTODY.

    NO DISCRETION

SUSPENSIONS CANNOT BE GIVEN WITH NO DISCRETION AND NO DUE PROCESS

    ADMIN LEAVE CAN

BECAUSE IT IS NOT PUNISHMENT. IT IS NOT A SUSPENSION, WHICH ***IS*** PUNISHMENT

WE HAD AN OFFICER WHO WAS SHOT 3 TIMES, WHILE HIS BACK WAS TURNED TO THE SUSPECT.

    HE RETURNED FIRE

HE WAS PLACED ON ADMIN LEAVE WITH PAY.

DO YOU "SUSPEND" SOMEBODY, WHO IS SHOT THREE TIMES IN THE BACK AND WHO THEN TURNS AROUND AND SHOOTS BACK?

    UM, NO

DO YOU SUSPEND SOMEBODY WHO IS BEREFT BECAUSE A BABY SHE GAVE CPR TO DIED IN HER ARMS?

    NO

    HTH

    1. d3x / dt3   10 years ago

Today in things that should not be a crime: 42 year old soccer mom arrested for having sex with 17 year old classmate of daughter

The inappropriate relationship was uncovered when an Upper Pottsgrove Police officer allegedly found Iris Gibney and the teen naked, having sex inside a parked car. The car was illegally parked in Hollenbach Park in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, after closing around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 15.

As the officer approached the car, he saw Gibney performing a sex act on the teen, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained from police.

The 17-year-old Pottsgrove High School student said he met Gibney at a high school football game earlier this year, police said. She had been volunteering as a "cheer mom" for the cheerleading team that her daughter is a part of.

Confronted about the alleged affair, the teen told the officer he couldn't lie and admitted he was having sex with Gibney, according to police records.

Gibney, who works as an associate at Victoria's Secret in King of Prussia, told the officer, "I've never been in trouble before. I can't believe I did this. I have three children of my own ? I am so, so sorry," according to the arrest report.

Gibney turned herself in Tuesday to be arraigned on charges including corruption of a minor, dissemination of explicit materials to a minor and trespass by auto.

      Huh.

"Pennsylvania; technically 16, but there is a corruption of minors law which basically makes the age of consent 18 unless both parties are over 16 but under 18."

      1. Crusty Juggler   10 years ago

She is actually attractive so really, she should just get a smack on the bottom. Or two smacks.

        1. Suthenboy   10 years ago

I volunteer to administer said smacks. Also, smacks should be on her bare bottom.

    2. Notorious G.K.C.   10 years ago

Really bad scene. I'm for punishment, but in the age of social media, when would the punishment end?

      1. Crusty Juggler   10 years ago

After her bottom is good and pink.

Things that should be a crime: fucking autoplay videos, especially shit-ass Flash videos. That was the first time my PC has hard-locked in three years.

And yes, the mom is hot.

Video, off duty cop does the hero thang, as we so often do, risks his life and assists in arrest of bad guy who tried to shoot him, without shots fired.

Note: another media article and nobody mentions the race of the suspect or the officer?

    hmmm...

    why not?

they do if the officer shoots the bad guy and the bad guy is black so why not here?

oh wait. The bad guy was not shot.

and fortunately the officer was not, although he placed himself in great risk of that, to help another and while off duty

makes me warm(er) and fuzzy(er) and is oh so common

Irish court rules that a brain-dead pregnant woman can be taken off life support

A young pregnant woman declared clinically brain dead more than three weeks ago may be taken off life support because there is no genuine prospect of her baby being born alive, a three-judge High Court has ruled.
Due to the woman's rapidly deteriorating condition, the prospect for the unborn is "nothing but distress and death", the court said.

After giving the court's ruling, the President of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, said he was "grateful" to be told there will be no appeal to the Supreme Court.

The fact there will be no appeal means the woman's family and partner may proceed with her burial.

It is understood life support in the case is likely to be withdrawn within the next 24 hours.

Conor Dignam SC, representing the interests of the unborn, said the court
had found the right to life of the unborn set out in Article 40.3.3. the Constitution was engaged in this case and his side believed the court had fully considered and vindicated the interests of this particular unborn.

Cormac Corrigan SC, representing the interests of the woman, said he was not appealing the ruling.
