Yesterday, I was traveling through the Charlotte, NC airport where I witnessed a distressing little exchange while buying a newspaper. A man and his 7 or 8-year old son were at the newsstand apparently considering their options on M&Ms. Newspapers were displayed underneath the candies and the kid looked down at them. Most featured on their front pages a photo of one the Pakistani school kids murdered by the Taliban (see below).
I had come in a bit after the conversation had started but I heard the little boy ask his father "Is that his son in a box? I don't see the box." The dad - sadly and uncomfortably - replied, "Yes. Sometimes bad people do bad things. (Pause) That's why we call them bad."

The kid leaned closer to the newspaper and started tracing the outline of the photo with his finger in the air and said with something like sad puzzlement, "Oh, I see the box now." From my point of view, the kid seemed as though he was trying to imagine what it would be like for him to be the boy in the box. The dad clearly felt at a loss and had no good explanation why the Pakistani boy - someone's son - was dead in a box. There is no good explanation for such an atrocity.

Such moments of moral clarity are often distilled in the dialogue between a father and his son.
No wonder the courts in this country work so diligently to prevent fathers from seeing their offspring.
What do you mean by "good"? Good meaning meaningful, or good meaning positive? The meaningful explanation is that some people are so convinced of their righteousness that they get to tell you what to do up to killing you for non-compliance. The teaching moment is do you allow yourself to become righteous, even in the cause of fighting the righteous. I wrangle with that with my own kids.
"Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains ... an unuprooted small corner of evil.
Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person."

I only wish that the motherfuckers who planned and supported this attack are wiped from the face of the planet, but sadly, I know that there's a million more idiot psychopaths waiting to replace them.
Between colonization, partition based on religion, various juntas, Afghanistan being on their border, Cold War divisions, and ongoing conflict with India, it's a wonder the whole country isn't a basket case--there are reasons why Pakistan is the way it is.
Sometimes violence is the answer, but the response and its support has to come from within Pakistani society. It's important to remember, too, that other countries aren't always like the United States, where their government is in control within its borders. I don't think the Pakistani government the world recognizes has much legitimacy at all in the north.
Violence might be one way to establish some legitimacy, here. Not responding to violence like that is probably a great way to lose legitimacy with everyone.

Geez, I come to H&R daily and I don't remember ever getting choked up before. Normally, the stories piss me off or amuse me greatly. And the comments even more. But this... I love my son very much.
Nice piece of collectivization there. I am sure the parents burying their kids after this attack "sowed" this. I would expect you to look that kids Mom in the eye and say "eh, you dirty brown furriner, you had it coming".
Cyto's imams have told him that Pakistani's are subhuman, so that's what Cyto will proclaim.
If ever a man bursts into a synagogue screaming "Reason Akbar! Die Mohhamedan meestics! Die!", tries to whip out an AR-15, accidentally shoots his dick off and then bleeds out, then we'll know Cyto's real name.
To put things in perspective , the extremist state zionists slaughtered more than 4 times as many school children just a few months ago , blowing up 140 schools in the process .
Ugh...

Explaining that to a seven year old may be fruitless. I think maybe ten or eleven is where the thought process is developed enough to get that heady.

That is a really profound quote.
toolkien, I think the dad took your meaningful explanation and distilled it down for a 7 year old: some people are bad.
You build it up from there as they get older and then they start to see the danger in a very powerful state.
I have a 1-year-old. It's really hard to put into words how your perspective on these sorts of things changes once you have kids of your own.
True.
It's incredible.
(I also have a 1-year-old.)

God wants us to have free will. The evil we create is on us, not Him.
And not that long ago, I had managed to let go of the hate I had for those I fought against... this ain't helping.
Truly, I can only imagine.
I might be crying into a whisky some night this next week. First I am going to go home and hug my wife and kids.
This ain't nothing that a few billion in "aid" can't make us forget about.
Frankly, I wouldn't bat an eye if the Pakistanis punished this with scaphism for all involved.

Way to completely trivialize a massive human tragedy spambot.

I can't really focus on or think about this stuff too much - my kids are still in school.
After Beslan happened, I would have gladly have volunteered to hunt down and kills those fucks.
Pakistan reaps what it sows.
To preempt Epi...
