NASA Whatever odd reasons might cause the Democrats to lose big in today's election, the White House wants to make clear that it's most assuredly not because of them.
- Citizens of Guam today voted to legalize medical marijuana there. They are the first U.S. territory to do so.
- A Russian member of the Taliban captured in Afghanistan is the first detainee to be brought to the United States to stand trial.
- Mexican police have captured the fugitive ex-mayor blamed for the disappearance of 43 student teachers that are believed to have been murdered.
- Supreme Court justices appear sympathetic that whistleblower protections should apply to an air marshal who exposed to the media a lack of security on certain long-distance flights.

Citizens of Guam today voted to legalize medical marijuana there.
The DEA doesn't have a military base there?
They were afraid it might tip over.

I believe the esteemed Congressman Hank Johnson declared victory last night in his campaign.
"Dear Friends,
It was an honor to declare our campaign's victory last night and it will be my privilege to serve you in Congress for another two years.
My hardworking campaign team and I couldn't have done it without all of you who donated, volunteered, and - of course - voted.
To all who encouraged your friends to support me, made phone calls, knocked on doors, and helped us raise the funds necessary to win - thank you from the bottom of my heart.
You've sent me back to Washington to keep working with President Obama, fighting to invest in economic growth, opportunity, and fairness for our community and the American middle class.
I am fired up to continue that fight. Thanks for making it possible. My door is always open to you.
With gratitude,"

Did anyone run in opposition?
If it's Guam we're talking about, wasn't it yesterday?
So here today, Guam tomorrow?
Agana give you a plus one for that.
Agana give you a plus one for that.
Only someone who's been to Guam is going to get that (unless it's in the article, which I haven't read).
Election night for my American friends:

Juve pulled their chestnuts out of the fire.
I don't get it. One of the finest midfields you'll find around yet they can't seem to graduate to the next level. Olympiakos is a fine side but Juve giving them the away-goal advantage may haunt them down the road.
Juve-Atletico should be good.
Did you get my last link a while ago regarding match-fixing in world soccer?
I did, thanks. But I'd been away from the screen for a while and by the time I got it, I figured you wouldn't be back.
And, not just soccer:

There's so much money in pro sports from tennis to cricket and everything in between it's no surprise.
That's why I laugh when ESPN only reports (singles out) on Seria A. EPL, Bundesliga and Belgium have all had bigger scandals.
I think there's also some cultural bias. I was watching the highlight show on Fox Sports today. Someone threw a flare at the Galatasary/Dortmund game and one of the studio commentators said, "where you have Turkish fans you have flares."
Umm, yeah, no-one else throws flares.
And, I find it hard to believe there's been no match-fixing on any kind in US pro sports since the Black Sox.
Did you see the Tottenham / Aston Villa match? Jesus, I felt bad for AV.
Whatever odd reasons might cause the Democrats to lose big in today's election, the White House wants to make clear that it's most assuredly not because of them.
So if they somehow come out on top tonight?
The White House will grin sheepishly and say "My bad?"
If they lose it's not the White House's fault. If they win, then of course, the President lead them to victory, just like he said he would.
Guam sinks as a result of pot legalization.
No, it just tips over.
Seriously. I mean it's already floating, it'll just flip. That's science.
Science? Guam weighs as much as a duck?
A Russian member of the Taliban captured in Afghanistan is the first detainee to be brought to the United States to stand trial.
But they'll see the big board!

NO ONE MESSES WITH MY NFL TEAM!!!!
Wait, I forgot I don't care about the welfare Vikes anymore. However the comments are fucking depressing me. It is an 11 on the "Go Team" scale. And the teams are Vikes, Packers, Walker/GOP/Kochs, Democrats.
I'm a Packer fan, and I find the whole "You have to show the proper moral outrage about this crime!" to be tedious.
As I pointed out regarding Ray Rice, the original two-game suspension was a more severe punishment than what the judge gave him, yet everybody's pointing their outrage at Roger Goodell.
I'm with you. I can't believe anyone spent any time following up on this story.
The outrage is depressing both from Vikings fans and from the anti-Scott Walker nuts who are mad that he did something sort of funny and looked human.
It is like John says, the progs have to turn everything into politics. The progs can't just chuckle and admit that Walker spent 5 minutes doing something that has no bearing on the race.
I just want to see the unions cry some more.
Whatever odd reasons might cause the Democrats to lose big in today's election, the White House wants to make clear that it's most assuredly not because of them.

Oh, we're still talking about the Federal level. Carry on then.
Finger pointing starting a day early. Fun.
Well they have had a lot of practice.
Supreme Court justices appear sympathetic that whistleblower protections should apply to an air marshal who exposed to the media a lack of security on certain long-distance flights.
Did he blow the whistle on himself?
It would take some serious flexibility for him to blow his own whistle.
Maybe he's really a dog or squirrel.
Or a large whistle.

Obama Forces Insurance Industry to Withhold 2015 Prices Until After Election
In the past, new prices were announced 60 days before the first day of the year.
Another historic first for the most transparent administration!
The Obama Administration, in another yet another move to improve the quality of life for all Americans, has forced reluctant Insurance companies to post their new prices 410 days before the first day of next year. Change you can believe in.

MEXICO CITY - Mexican police have captured a fugitive former mayor and his wife who the government has blamed for ordering the disappearance of 43 student teachers feared massacred in September, officials said on Tuesday.
School reformers!
Those "student teachers" were part of a cadre of malcontents that were protesting against the government for some reason. Students in the government-run teacher schools are the kind of people that are looking forward to join the powerful public education teachers' union. That should tell you that they're aren't doing it for the kids.
Just finished voting a little while ago. Now I'm drinking bourbon, playing world of tanks, and listening to Ensiferum, and Korpiklaani,
What do you think of the Tiger 2?
Haven't unlocked it yet, still cruising around with the Tiger 1. I do like the German heavies so far.
I ripped in the Tiger H and sit around 60% in it. Tiger II is fun, but tier 8 blows these days. E75 is a blast and I rage sold E100.
IMHO, you have to play the tiger 2 more like a sniper. I'm a brawler and, thus, gravitate towards the russian heavies. I also love the derpalicous kv-2. Yeah, I know, the armor sucks but it is fun watchs td's try to run from you coming around a corner.
So do you have a T-34?
Yeah, for being as frikkin slow as the Tiger 2 is, and how heavily armored it was in real life, I find it gets blowed up pretty easy.

I just looked at the earlier article about Gary Johnson. Wow Gay Jay is a self-important idiot. "You may think Rand Paul is well positioned to wage a serious fightback for freedom, but I'm more of a purist! (Even though I'm actually not)". I liked him a lot more than Ron Paul but Gay Jay's run for president was the stupid waste of time that can be expected from the LP. GJ should be a senator instead he ran a pointless, lame campaign for president. Gay Jay and the rest of the LP are more interested in preening and strutting their 'purity' than actually advancing freedom.
Like all websites that require signup, doesn't Reason require their users to be at least 13 years old? Did you tell your mommy or daddy you were signing up here?
(I'm going on an assumption here, since the "Gay" as pejorative insult does suggest a pre-teen)
Shut up. "Gay Jay" is a commonly used nickname around here for Gary Johnson. See also 'Gary's Johnson'.
Glad for the clarification, I thought perhaps there was some inside knowledge there.
Although in fact I think that the Libertarians should actively court a gay nominee.
That would create some "buzz" around the candidate and perhaps give him or her a hearing from voters that would otherwise never listen to a non-major party candidate.
While it's not a huge deal, it's not actually that common (30 results on Google, 26 on Bing) and IIRC, a lot (most?) of that is SIV, who probably does mean gay pejoratively.
Actually, "GayJay" (one word) yields quite a few more results (albeit some are probably overlapping). So I retract what I said, at least except for the part about SIV probably meaning it pejoratively.
AFAIK "gay" in "Gay Jay" is just meant to rhyme, not be pejorative (or even indicative of anything).
You are correct. I'm trying to find the first post of the term... it was during a time when people were creating rhyming words for the candidate's initials etc.
I do remember the original blogpost author prayed to God that Gay Jay wouldn't stick.
Cyto's 13 in Canadian years.
Yeah, if they were interested in *real* reform they'd fold up their tent and back the GOP?
If Rand Paul were running for president, hell yes.
So when Rand becomes the libertarian's version of Obama (read: disappointing), and fails to enact the reforms people read into his speeches, do I get to say "told ya?"
Sure. That's just the way it's going to be.
Cynical sadsacks gonna sadsack.
You can sit around and continue to just bitch, because you and the other Libertarian purists seem far more interested in that then actually enacted any actual change.
It's narcissism and self-importance. "Only OUR tribe can be trusted!"
Unless Rand does an absolute about-face the day he's inaugurated, he will be noticeably better than Bush and Obama, even if he isn't a libertarian's dream.
I will vote for him in a heartbeat not because I think he's a libertarian sleeper agent but because he is unlikely to be a complete fuckstick. And after the last 12 years, that's the new metric.
"He'd suck less" would be faint praise in any arena other than politics, but it puts Rand far ahead of almost everyone in this case.
As far as disappointments go, I suspect a President Paul would beat the shit out of the total statists we've had for decades now.
No but they would back Rand
?As? es la vida, compadre!
David Letterman's monologue from last night. Funny because it is true!
"This is what happens when we have the midterm elections. The Republicans, of course, have turned against Obama, and the Democrats have also turned against Obama. That's a lonely, lonely gig being president, ladies and gentlemen.
"Take a look at this: gas under $3 a gallon ? under $3 a gallon. Unemployment under 6%, whoever thought? Stock market breaking records every day. No wonder the guy is so unpopular."
So Obama is actually good, and it's because he's bad?
I can barely contain my laughter.
Of course the president can take credit for all those things. Especially the low energy prices since has been a principle backer of the Shale Oil boom.
And the recent low low prices are courtesy of the Saudis trying to fuck with the shale oil boom.
I am sorry in advance for posting Shreek bait.
Obama has sent us some lovely weather after the cold and rain sent by Bush and capitalism.
The stock market records aren't healthy either. That will take care of itself soon enough.
More Americans are gaining access to affordable medical care. More Americans are graduating from high school and entering higher ed. Gas prices keep dropping. Even the federal response to the Ebola threat has turned out to be pretty darn effective

The sea levels lowered, and the planet started healing...
Yes, by the singular power of Obama's magic we're enjoying all those phenomena. Why, it'll be only days before those water levels start to recede, after all!
Now that's a tough one, not easy like all those others. I think he'll need at least 6 more years for that one.
He has to find the warm air in the ocean first.
If it's on a golf course, he'll find it, and he'll never stop until he does.
Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive!
Thank goodness he wasn't obstructed by Congress from passing his changes to enable all of these good things to happen.
I am curious as the audience's reaction to the joke.
For the time that I actually watched Letterman (in his NBC Heyday) I never found him a particularly political comedian.
[I just googled, he left for CBS in 1993, oh wow]
Was my perception of his political slant obscured by the ready Clinton jokes that _any_ comedian in the 90s would have to had produced?
Was it a slow evolution or a quick change in 2002-04
My recollection is that Letterman, to the extent he did political humor back in the 80s, sprayed the acid to everyone. But I was ages 7-15 back then, so my memory of early Letterman is pretty suspect.
Wasn't gas $1.84 or something when Obama took office?
Sssshhhhh! don't tell anybody.
Yes, and it was in the mid $2 range for all of 2009. It didn't reach $3 per gallon until late 2010.
http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx
But honestly, I don't think Dave's audience is made up of a lot of critical thinkers any more.
...Letterman is Palin's Buttplug!?
gas under $3 a gallon
Not around here.

Should neither major party nominee receive 50% in Georgia, then our GA election season will not be decided until JANUARY 6TH.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!
I like the georgia law, but never understood why they havent gone with irv.
Because that is what foreigners do.
I (slightly) kid that the reason that we don't use IRV is xenophobia, more correctly it is just because that is not in the normal US election toolset. Run Off elections are well known.
One supposed reason for the law was to prevent GOP candidates from "accidentally" getting a plurality of the vote. This would be a worry if the Democratic vote were split between for instance a 'Dixiecrat' independent and the regular Democratic nominee.
In close elections, the results of IRV are very dependent on the order the lower ranking candidates drop out, which can lead to very strange results such as situations where you lose because too many people voted for you.
I voted against one incumbent because she used her campaign staff photo and names as an endorsement in an ad without their permission. I voted against another because his nickname is Peanuts. Peanut would be acceptable, but the plural is right out.
I voted against incumbents at every level, especially school board. Cause FYTW.
Same.
I had no idea who the school board folks were, but they were listed in one column in non-alphabetical order and I had to pick 3. I chose the 3 on the on the bottom figuring the longest serving members would get top billing.
I voted against the incumbents for every other issue and wrote in my self for Congress since the two major party candidates are fucksticks and the third couldn't even bother with a working website (note: if he had no website at all I might have voted for him).
I also voted against increasing NJ's "open space preservation" policy and against allowing the denial of bail in certain situations.
Oh, I also voted
- Yes on unlinking the state gas tax from the CPI (fuck your automatic increases)
- No on extending the bottle deposit law (you can't throw a rock without hitting a recycling container already)
- No to preventing the already approved casinos
- No to forcing employers to provide sick time
I went to the poll and wrote in "NO VOTE" for every office.
I went down my ballot and voted L where I could (and there was a libertarian candidate for sheriff! That would be so awesome!) and wrote myself in everywhere else. And for the first time ever, I voted "Yes" on a ballot measure (shall all school board meetings where collective bargaining negotiations take place be required to be public? Who the fuck would vote "no" on that? Why is that even a question?). Also, I got someone else to write my name in for a position with no candidates, so I might be the Jefferson County Surveyor in a couple of weeks.
Why We're Just Now Getting the 1960s Batman TV Show on DVD
About damn bat-time.
I'm always amazed when squabbles over rights prevent movies and TV shows from being shown. Compromise, folks. It's not like you're making any money when these things sit around unseen.
Last night I watched the first three episodes of Lena Dunham's show Girls. I didn't know it was possible to make such a vapid and unsympathetic group of protagonists. Sadly for Dunham, I've seen enough of her in the media to tell that this isn't a brilliant satire. Even more sadly, I know people who love the show because they are just like the characters.
I think someone on here wrote a lengthy analysis where Dunham is actually the vile and repulsive human she shows herself to be in the show and the show is her outlet to display to anyone close to her how much she actually hates them. It's an exercise in loathing of the darkest and most foul.
In the very first episode she quits the unpaid internship she's held for a year, tries to hit her parents up for $1100 a month for 24 months while she writes a book that thus far is maybe 10 pages handwritten, claims to be the voice of the generation, and after waking up from an opiate-induced high in her parents' vacated hotel room proceeds to steal the tip left for housekeeping. I mean Jesus fuck, who could bear to event act as that character?
So it's an autobiography?
Well, her sister has to be in her mid teens now, so do you think the other kids are taking it easy on her.
"Here comes Dunham!
Did you hear she joined the nunnery?
Her nun name is Sister Diddler!"
Vile and repulsive is putting it mildly.
https://i.imgflip.com/ds6uz.jpg
See, I decided to watch the silent movies on TCM instead. Much more entertaining. Mary Pickford is seriously underrated.
I think they are the most unlikable principle characters in the history of TV. You feel more sympathy for Stringer Bell and Avon Barksdale than anyone on Girls.
When Stringer started using Robert's Rules of Order he won my heart forever. Swoon.
"But what we have here is an elastic product."
"... are you taking notes on a criminal fucking conspiracy?!"
So great.
Stringer Bell had a pimp ass copy of The Wealth of Nations.
I think the show is pretty funny. Yes, the characters are mostly entitled, directionless, urbane assholes unburdened by any morals. One of the only likeable characters is Ray, the coffee shop guy, who is clearly not a cookie-cutter leftist, doesn't bow to PC cant, and mostly knows what he wants to do with his life. It may not have been written as brilliant satire, but it might as well have been.
Well no, it is satire. Of a sort. You're not supposed to think the characters do much of anything right.
Really, I've taken to using Bill Murray's insult when talking about Dunham: medium talent.
Congratulations Bundesliga!
They finally let Scott use that ?\_(?)_/? thingy. Good for him.

"This is a president who wants to stay relevant for the next two years," said Lisa Maatz, American Association of University Women vice president of government relations. "And in some respects, fair is fair. The candidates have run from him. There are no choir boys in politics."
So now, he's just one more slimy politico? Why didn't you say that earlier?
So this kid and his girlfriend came to my register today. He was wearing a red tshirt with the Che silhouette on it with some writing on it blocked by his sweater, so I asked him what it said. It read "If you don't know who this man is...you shouldn't be wearing a tshirt with him on it."
I thought it was anti-Che, so I said "Cool! Communism...100 million dead and all I got was this lousy tshirt".
Then his GF gave me a death stared filled with complete loathing. So they left and I realized, it was a PRO Che shirt and this guy was actually BERATING all the people who wear the image without recognizing the GREATNESS of Che.
Or maybe it was an anti-Che shirt and he didn't realise it. I'm confused now. But not about commies.
I think you're thinking of this shirt:
http://secondskin.typepad.com/.....970b-320pi
What does that mean?
Commies $uck!
I think maybe they're trying to suggest that capitalism led to the communist revolt in Cuba or something. I'm a little unsure, because that makes no fucking sense at all if you know anything about Cuba.
It's pointing out the irony that selling the image of a socialist hero is a good marketing strategy.
Huh. What are they selling?
Che cachet, of course. The ineffable smugness of showing how "against The Man" you are without actually doing anything is a very precious commodity. Why do you think the Prius sells so well?
I think it's an ironic parody. The way I read it is 'here's this murderous, anti-capitalist dipshit from a privileged background and it took capitalism to produce his image.'
I mean, people called Capitalists, they go the house?
Maybe they're functionally illiterate and don't understand that it's supposed to be an anti-Che shirt.

For those who think Mr. Obama has faced unusual levels of rhetoric, consider this question from a reporter to Mr. Bush:
"Thank you, Mr. President. With all due respect, Nancy Pelosi has called you incompetent, a liar, the emperor with no clothes and, as recently as yesterday, dangerous. How will you work with someone who has such little respect for your leadership and who is third in line to the presidency?"
Bush was a rich white man, so he could take it. Obama has to endure such rhetoric from the place of a historically excluded minority.
Do I pass?
