Alt Headline: Racist South Carolina Republicans elect Indian-American governor and black Senator. The Nation hardest hit.
$%&@ing rednecks!!!!!
Well, they're really white, since they belong to the wrong party!
^THERE EXIST PEOPLE WHO WILL MAKE THIS ARGUMENT IRONICALLY!^
*Un-ironically
Fucking spellcheck.
Really? That they are *actually* white?
Not *actually* white but they have a white racial identity (i.e. Uncle Toms). It's in the same mindset as Sarah Palin wasn't a true woman because she wasn't a leftist. There is no more flexible mind than the academic mind.
I don't want to start a thing, but when black people call other black people 'Uncle Tom's' I don't think (from the one's I've spoken too about this) that they are saying the person in question is white or has a white racial identity, but that the person in question is, like the character Uncle Tom (or at least some perceptions of him), far too deferential to whites and their sensibilities.
I cannot believe it is a slur. Have these people read the book. Uncle Tom was righteous man, and we would be better off if their more like him.
Ironically, the "uncle tom" slur was started by white slaveholders:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Tom_literature
I'm betting it started to become common during the Black Power days when many blacks became fed up with civil rights leaders who seemed too deferential and accommodating. Essentially when blacks call someone an Uncle Tom they're expressing similar sentiments to conservatives calling a Republican a RINO.
Because expecting members of a party to all adhere to the same set of principles is the same as expecting members of a race to all adhere to the same set of principles.
Our parties have not been narrowly ideological ones but rather regional and interest group coalitions. But more importantly, it's not so much specific principles as general deference and accommodation both are getting at.
Our parties have not been narrowly ideological ones but rather regional and interest group coalitions.
That may be how it works in practice but that's not how the parties present themselves.
Now perpetuated by Democrats who think individuals exist to do as the State demands.
but when black people call other black people 'Uncle Tom's' I don't think (from the one's I've spoken too about this) that they are saying the person in question is white or has a white racial identity
Yeah, you're right on that. I wasn't thinking all the way through when I wrote that. But my first sentence reflects a lot of the prog-left academic identity argument. So, when what's her name called Clinton the first black president, she wasn't being totally symbolic. It's hard to explain in a comment box because the academic theory on it is really detailed.
We're going to elect a black US Senator too.
First one since Reconstruction.
No, Obama for example.
Or did you mean first for the state? If so, you're correct
For the entire South.
You think Bo knows what "Reconstuction" was and where it happened? Lulz he lives in SC.
The original comment said 'first one since Reconstruction,' I thought he meant in the nation, where we've had, what, only three?
CNN already called Senate - WV for Capito (R)?
Obama's turning WV Red through his feckless reckless environmental policy is quite a story.
Probably not overly happy about what he and his crew have done to the coal industry. Lots of people there depended on it for a living. Besides, I believe WV went for Hillary against Obama back in the 2007 primary.
In fact, I would not be at all surprised if the coal thing was Obama's form of revenge on them for supporting Hillary. He strikes me as a vindictive son of a bitch.
"Why are they so upset about losing good paying jobs? We're funneling lots of free government cash to 'em!"
That people might prefer jobs to equivalent amounts of confiscated cash is beyond the ken of this administration.
The coal industry is dying because natural gas is far cheaper; pretty much no one is building new coal plants and as older plants get replaced the demand for coal keeps dropping.
If you're in the coal industry, you need to be looking for a new job, because you're a 21st century buggywhip maker. But no one in WV or KY wants to hear that, so politicians keep lying to them that the coal jobs will come back if you just vote for them.
Whatever truth to that there is, it's also true that government regulation is not helping and gives voters not only a convenient but legitimate target for all the industries woes.
Considering how much money the coal industry puts into anti-fracking lobbying, they're not really in a place to whine about how government regulation is hurting businesses.
Good sign they're choosing jobs over welfare.
WV was going red anyway. They were just slightly lagging the rest of the South.
Presidential elections maybe, but they just elected Manichin
You mean the guy who pretended to shoot Obamacare in his campaign ads?
Hence my original comment.
Weirdly enough, Romney won the presidential vote in West Virginia by 28%, but Democrats actually control the state Senate and Assembly.
And they control the Senate 27 to 10.
West Virginian politics confuse me.
A lot of southern state democrats are a lot more conservative than their federal brethren; KY elects a lot of democrats locally and repubs nationally.
Yeah, I never understood how WV and IA were blue states despite being rural as fuck.
Part of WV lagging the rest of the South was that they had Robert "KKK" Byrd in office for so fucking long. He was an incumbent and just kept winning.
IA is rural, but that rural lives on the Dept of Ag handouts.
WV is in the south?
It's definitely not the north.
It's not even the west.
West Virginia is not "the South".
Appalachia is much closer to Southern sensibilities than it is Northern ones.
You know there's a northern Appalachia, right?
Republicans get Senate pickup #1 in West Virginia.
Won't matter if they lose GA and/or KS.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) holds on to his seat against Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes.
Despite the endorsement of Grimes by Team Hillary?
I haz a amaze.
I await her announcing who she voted for in 2012 with 'bated breath.
'bated breath?
Are you waiting in your bunk?
Duh. There's election porn on the tube!
Can we please retire "red" and "blue" and go back to two completely unrelated colors that change every election?
Red and white?
GREEN! PURPLE!!
It used to be blue for the president's party and red for the other party.
Is that true? I have read of color-coded ballots in the mid 19th century, but I have not delved into it.
I thought it used to be arbitrary, for each election
That was the convention for the TV networks. After the 2000 election controversy was such a huge news story, complete with all the electoral maps, the colors used that year became associated directly with the parties rather than with incumbent vs. challenger.
I suppose I'll google that while in a hungover stupor this Saturday. But, I didn't expect that the color association could have come about so recently.
GREEN! PURPLE!!
I am Green Drazi! Must kill Purple Drazi!
Vermilion and Bisque?
Plaid and bold-stripe.
Paging GILMORE!
Vagina and Penis?
Asshole and other asshole.
Afro vs Jheri-Curl?
How is KY already getting 39% in when half of the state is in Central Time?
MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD!!!
That's how!
Well, KY usually helps in getting 100% in.
KY polls close at 6pm, so both halfs are done by 7pm EST
Tulpa doesnt understand how clocks work.
Polls in several all-ETZ states also close at 6 PM (EST) and they're nowhere near as much reported.
KY also has 120 counties, so distance from polls to county clerk is small. Not sure if that matters, but its easily one factor.
KY is usually one of the first states in. Cycle after cycle.
KY and IN are the only two states where polls close at 6PM EST:
http://www.outsidethebeltway.c.....-Times.gif
So half the state closes at 6pm and starts counting. At 7pm the rest of the state closes and a large chunk of the 6pm ballots are ready to report.
Ky reprts before the central areas close, which is stupid.
Most of the population is in ETZ as well.
Also, by population, maybe 1/3rd is central.
Light Rail in Pinellas county florida is looking pretty dead
Can we get those folks to move to CA? Please?
Meh, more likely New Yorkers which are actually slightly more tolerable. Don't ask me why I feel that way
I'm in Pinellas, most of the expatriates here seem to be from MI/Ohio, rather than the NE.
Well that might be your saving grace. Them backwards flyover types don't seem too inclined to enter the modern world of trains and unicorns
Gillespie actually has a sizeable lead in VA with 20% in, but I've seen Fairfax County break my heart too many times before to trust it.
Not trying to hide it any more, Tulpa? Too much work for you? You never were any good at sockpuppeting. I suppose being lazy is part of that.
As opposed to a skilled and experienced sockpuppeter like you?
Oh, does calling you lazy make you butthurt about your abysmal sockpuppeting skills, you mendacious fuck? It's too bad you're so fucking stupid, Tulpa. You might be able to sockpuppet better and not be universally reviled. But alas, you're too dumb for either of them.
And thanks for confirming that it's you, scumbag. Your sockpuppet fell apart absurdly fast. I guess you'll have to keep your day job at the community college.
East coast reasonoid in seattle for the week for a microsoft con. So I ask you Epi: where's the best place to get some deep dish pizza??
Tulpicio's. They serve some fine wine.
Don't get your hopes up. 90% of the state population lives within 10 miles of DC. Who do you suspect those people vote for?
Depends on whether idiot Ted Cruz is shutting down the government.
90% seems a little high.
I was exaggerating, but really, it's pretty high.
This never would've happened with Postrel in charge!
If Gillespie wins in VA, or even comes close, I think it indicates a GOP wave election. AFAIK he was never predicted to have a chance.
Wait for The NOVA votes to roll in. He's ahead, but when the DC area votes come in, I'm afraid that's all over with.
Also, GOP losing in NC.
From Reason? Twitter feed "Charlie Crist and Rick Scott tied for Governor in Florida. Crist trying to get poll hours extended in Broward county." The Western Part of Florida in the Central Time Zone is more "Southern" culturally - more like Alabama. It also tends to be more Republican. Remember 2000? That is the part of the state that turned Florida from "Gore" to "Too Close To Call".
If this trend continues I think Florida will reelect Scott.
Er, Florida was originally called for Bush in 2000, not Gore.
It was actually called for Bush in the end, too.
I do recall different "callings" in 2000--I don't think everyone was saying Bush. In fact, I seem to remember some apparent shenanigans about some media outlets saying it was Gore without real information indicating a Gore win, in an attempt to get Panhandle voters to stay home. Obviously, that election was far too close for anyone to have declared anyone a winner before everything was counted.
Looks like you're right.
I remember several embaressing "Calls" by TV stations because they thought all of the Florida results were in when only the Eastern Time Zone results were in. It was the following day that it was called for Bush and THEN Sore-Looserman whined and demanded a recount.
How is Broward supposed to figure out how many fake votes they need to create when the panhandle hasn't closed yet?
+50 Stormy Dragon
Just got back from voting. All the major state offices Minnesota had a Libertarian candidate! Yippee!
*Waits anxiously by tha teevee for the shocking election results*
I wrote in "NO VOTE" for every position on the ballot
I voted for:
2 Libertarians
3 Republicans
1 Democrat
Santa Claus
The Easter Bunny
Judge Napolitano
Nick Gillespie
Matt Welch
Jerry Doyle
and voted against retaining all the judges
Two Libertarians...and Zombie Calvin Coolidge.
Kennedy has a sad. You must really hate political dynasties.
I got to vote for four libertarian candidates: three state-wide and one congressional.
I also got to vote against four bond requests and FOR a motion to eliminate an office from the city council.
LIBERTARIAN MOMENT
Damn right. Maybe the biggest libertarian moment I ever see.
Texas has several libertarian candidates on the ballot. I voted for all except in one race. I'm looking forward to my bi-annual tradition of seeing everyone I vote for lose.
All of the state offices in Arkansas had Libertarians running.
The Land Commissioner candidate is Elvis Presley.
I think I just saw teh Hand of God stop a Blackhawks shot... That or Price is in goal...
Yup, unofficial results were just released in Florida, Scott won in Florida 48.06 to 46.98 Wyle got 3.93
I had hoped Wyllie would do better, due to disgust with the alternatives. Although sometimes when it's close people think they can't vote for a 3rd party. But hey, greater than the difference between the two scumbag candidates!
OK, the Bob Hope movies have begun on TCM. Hope and Change!
Pale Rider and the Blackhawks game are on!!
Pale Rider, dude. Hockey doesn't start for months. I mean real hockey.
OT: The WNBA's Brittney Griner was involved in a Chinese fire drill knife attack.
Apparently, Turner and Dish are engaged in some sort of pissing match. No Hope for me.
Patterson at 3%. I AM THE THREE PERCENT.
Me too! woot.
Uh oh, Crist emergency poll extension denied. Sorry Charlie, but only good Tuna gets to be... something...
I see that Gillespie is doing alright. I can't say that I like the guy even remotely (not enough to even hold my nose and vote against an entrenched incumbent over my principled 'L'-vote). That said, I want Mark Warner to cry.
Prog-tears are going to be delicious tonight.
Yes, they will!
We hope. But there are a few races Rs are not doing so well. I think there is no way Gillespie wins. There are too many votes in NOVA, all of them D.
Scott Brown is getting spanked. Maybe someone should stop voting with Democrats after getting elected when they're supposed to be with the GOP?
And don't forget about the race in Kansas. The I is a D.
But the GOP are looking good so far in GA.
Apparently Ron Paul is not too thrilled, either.
I confuse Mark Warner with John Warner....
I AM THE THREE PERCENT.
Hold your head high, loser!
You can tell progressives are getting shit on when they start writing articles about how the mid-terms prove our Democracy is broken and that the midterms are meaningless anyway.
"The system is broken" is the goto defense for progs.
Except when they win. Then it's "elections have consequences" and "rules are rules".
"Rules are rules" is right out of your pathetic playbook, Tulpy-Poo. You should love them. I mean, you'll give the rules a sloppy blowjob even without being asked.
Except when they win.
Seconded. Then, it is threats, and rhetorical appeals to any semblance of law & order.
Get in the back of the bus and be silent! This is our 1000 year reign!
God damn they are so predictable. That should be so embarrassing for them, but they aren't even aware enough for that.
prove our Democracy is broken
I wish everyone would stop using that word. Though, it would be good for progs to learn that 'democracy' =/= all that is good and right.
Oh, fucking wahh! I am so goddamn sick of that shit. We're losing in the midterms. Let's end midterms! No fuck you, stop fucking over the public and accept that when you do it long enough, you might start losing.
"midterms are meaningless anyway."
Easy to translate:
"Those grapes are really sour!"
Both sides do that.
When the Republicans lose elections we hear about VOTER FRAUD! ILLEGALS VOTING! MEDIA BIAS!
When the Democrats lose elections we hear about VOTER SUPPRESSION! CORPORATE CAMPAIGN SPENDING!
Neither side wants to admit their cherished beliefs were just unpopular and, horrors!, perhaps were not working for people.
"Bo Cara Esq.|11.4.14 @ 8:35PM|#
Both sides do that.
Your entire posting history in one sentence.
You've really expanded your output there, friend!
Are you tired?
Who isn't tired of your stupid schtick and your pathetic sockpuppetry?
Jesus fucking Christ, Ezra Klein.
I can just imagine the derp without even clicking.
Wow, it's a wonder he has enough sentience to dress himself in the morning.
I had predicted that NC would decide who takes the Senate but noe Hagan looks fairly safe so CO will decide instead.
Nevertheless sweet gridlock is upon us.
Palin's Buttplug|11.4.14 @ 8:25PM|#
"I had predicted..."
Fuck your predictions, 8%
I am the only one on this goddamn site who can see clearly.
I am the only one on this goddamn site who can see clearly.
See clearly up Obama's arse.
What does the inside of your large intestine look like?
Everybody sing:
I can see clearly now
my brain is gone
His Fordness is proud of you. You may now take a Soma Tablet and go on holiday.
Palin's Buttplug|11.4.14 @ 8:31PM|#
"I am the only one"
Fuck off, turd. Can't you read?
You predicted that your master would walk on water and solve all the worlds problems and that everyone would love him forever.
FAIL!
I just wanted Obama to end the wars and cut the deficit in half like he has. It was a really low bar to hurdle.
And create new government boondoggles that will increase the deficit in later years?
By doubling the deficit and then cutting it in half six years later?
That's winning, Sheen Style.
You do not watch the news much, do you?
Palin's Buttplug|11.4.14 @ 8:38PM|#
"I just wanted Obama to end the wars and cut the deficit in half like he has"
Fuck off, liar.
Nunn will lose Georgia by 4-6 points. I rode by a nearby precinct and it looked like a line for a tractor pull standing outside.
Not 8 points?
Hey, Banjos! Offspring watching the returns?
I got the one year old to sleep, the two year old is fighting hard to stay awake. She's bawling in her crib, bawling almost as hard as the progs will be after tonight.
😎 Have a pleasant evening.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Mitch McConnell is now bloviating about how he wants to compromise with Obama.
I love how whoever wins is always totally open for compromise if it weren't for those goddamn obstructionist losers.
One of my worries is that a GOP Senate will want to do an amnesty.
McConnell has been blatantly selling himself with talk about how good he can be to KY as the next Leader. How is that a selling point rather than a turn off?
The Turtle ran on saving Obama care - called Kynect in KY.
Fuck off. He ran on 'ALG is bad for KY'.
McConnell is 72 yo and has a guaranteed job for the next six years. You'd think at this point in his life he could say whatever was on his mind, consequences be damned.
Did anyone ask McConnell whether he voted Obama in 2012?
All the while Krauthammer and Karl Rove are bloviating about how this election is all about how badly everyone wants more war.
Really?! Unbelievable.
You thought he was going to govern sanely?
I can't believe that Maryland is even close. It's like they're holding Brown accountable for screwing up the health exchange. I mean, they should. But... they're actually holding someone in Maryland accountable?
"Politics is the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich, by promising to protect each from the other." ?Oscar Ameringer
Great quote.
Now they're calling DE for Coons, despite the fact he's trailing in the results so far.
I'm not sure what you said there, but sounds racist.
Ron Paul is not happy.
And Chris Hayes is Chris Hayesing like he's never Chris Hayesed before.
I hate Chris Hayes. My face is leaking from joy of his butt hurt.
Um, what?
Well, unfortunately, Ron is probably right. Although, he could kick that son of his in the ass and try to make him do something about it.
I believe that Rand will have a lot more influence in a GOP controlled congress than what a lot of people think. And I think he has Turtle Heads ear. He just needs to take McCain and Graham and crack their heads together like Moe, give them some army men and let them sit in a corner somewhere and play army men while Graham occasionally changes McCains drool bib.
Ron is absolutely right. I just like watching Republicans angrily denounce him on twitter.
Speaking of angry denunciations, Sally Kohn is SO FUCKING PISSED.
Her family had better keep the razor blades and vodka away from her tonight.
Umm, maybe she can move to Canada and save herself. I hear that proggies do that whenever Republicans win and only come back after the great holocaust is over and a light bringer wins again.
Krauthammer on Fox News talking up public support for Iraq War the Third. Ron Paul might be right.
Don't forget the war in Iran those fucking assholes want so bad.
Expanding Run Off elections might help this. More people would be willing to vote for third party candidates if we had them. If more senate candidates HAD to cater to libertarians to win a run-off things might change.
Arkansas just called for GOP. Dems are going extinct in the hillbilly states.
LIBERTARIAN MOMENT, WAVE ELECTION COMING
I saw that, I don't know what happened, but his votes are down to 629...
Dem. 6,666
Told ya.
I've been following this since you posted. Rowley went up to about 8,400 votes, but the others shot way ahead. Now, he is down to 629 votes. WTF. Must have had a misreported precinct.
I haz a sad now.
Ew, Kelly has Karl Rove on. I thought she was better than that.
"Gov. Charlie Crist's campaign filed an emergency motion to extend voting by two hours in Broward County due to voter confusion and malfunctions but a judge has denied that injunction."
Translation: Senile nonagenarians cannot figure out which circle goes with which candidate. At least we will not have hanging tags this year. Do you really want senile people deciding who the next governor is? Really? Democrats apparently do.
According to the motion, the conflicting information ended up discouraging many voters from casting their ballot.
Don't worry, AIR.
Holder's on the case.
Holy fuck, it's so close Sarvis actually might end up with more votes than the difference between Gillespie and Warner.
Is it possible we'll have both progressive AND conservative tears come morning? Do I dare to dream?
Gillespie is going to lose and it will be the fault of that evil Sarvis. I have to tell you, if I lived in VA, I would have voted for Sarvis, no matter the results.
Dude, I think we were separated at birth.
The Biggest Loser? THE US VOTER!!!
/back to drinking
Rand on fox.
...pandering to the GOP. Though, I suppose this is necessary if he ever wants to be Prez.
Having attacked progs enough for the night read this thread and glimpse the gross stupidity of American conservatives.
I saw enough of that when I was in a heater thread all day on another site, right after MJ legalization in CO. The conservatives were calling for building a big wall around CO to keep in the dope fiends, and they weren't joking. It was sickening.
heated, damnit
BTW I am right again. I said Obamacare would not be a measurable factor tonight. Based on Hagan's strong showing in NC I am calling victory.
Palin's Buttplug|11.4.14 @ 8:53PM|#
"BTW I am right again."
Right, turd. 8%.
One data point is always a great foundation for such a general claim
.
I'm calling you an imbecile.
One of us is right and the other is happy being called a sex toy designed to be jammed into shit.
Lol, Rand is tearing into Hitlary right off the bat. My God, I want him to get the nomination in 16 and go up against that cunt. He is not afraid of her, at all, and will go straight for the throat. She'd better hope the GOP nominate another Romney.
CNN is calling IL for Durbin, with 2% of the vote in AND with Durbin trailing by 1%.
They obviously know something that you don't, FdA. They're THE NEWS.
(But, yea, that is pretty strange. I have seen a few similar instances so far.)
Now it's 19% in and Durbin is down 50-46%
okay now Durbin is way up 61-36
Iowahawk: "Oh, boy! I can't wait to find out who'll be in charge of raising government spending next year!"
How in the world did Stuart Smalley win yet another senate election. What a joke that state is.
.
To be honest, as badly as I want to see the GOP win the Senate just to make Obama's life miserable for the next 2 years, I think that the MJ legalization referendums in OR and AL are a lot more important to the cause of liberty than the senate.
If the GOP do win the Senate, I don't expect much. But the one thing I want is for these damn fake scandals to be full investigated, prosecuted, and I want to see people involved in fucking prison.
TEAM BLUE will stonewall, stonewall, stonewall.
Am I the only one who thinks the Dems losing the Senate is not going to upset Hillary 2016! one bit?
Hillary's time has past. She isn't getting the nomination regardless of what happens in 2014.
I don't believe it will make a difference one way or another. The vast majority of politics is local. The presidential race is mostly based on who's more attractive and amiable.
Except for the whole Obamacare thing, lead-smelter forced out of biz by EPA thing, etc.
If Tip O'Neill were alive today he would not say "all politics is local". He'd probably just say "SHIT!!!"
Nun getting spanked by Perdue with 30% in.
VA race tightening, NOVA kicking in. No surprise that Gillespie wasn't enough ahead to pull it out.
