  • U.S. Govt.

Dallas nurse Nina Pham was declared Ebola-free today, and promptly flew to the White House where President Barack Obama gave her a hug. Since a doctor in New York City came down with the virus, health officials remind us again: WHATEVER DO, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T PANIC! Because of this new case, some lawmakers want to require a 21-day quarantine for any doctors returning to the U.S. from Ebola-stricken nations. Meanwhile, this savvy dude just sold "Ebola.com" for $200,000.

  • Is the Islamic State using chemical weapons in Iraq? We're going to find out, says Secretary of State John Kerry.
  • Missouri police are gearing up – literally, riot-style – in anticipation of protests in case a grand jury doesn't charge Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown.
  • The Georgia Senate race is a statistical tie, according to one poll. Another indicates a slight lead for Democrat Michelle Nunn. Could it help the Donkey Party keep the Senate?
  • Conan O'Brien joked on Twitter: "I picked out my Halloween costume. I'm going as 'Slutty Madeleine Albright.'" The former Secretary of State responded: "I'm considering going as hunky Conan O'Brien - but that might be too far fetched."
  • Speaking of Twitter, Queen Elizabeth II signed up today and wrote, "It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting." Because nothing says "Information Age" like "@BritishMonarchy."
  • Breaking Bad action figures join the esteemed list of Things That Upset Some Moms Who Represent All Moms, so they've been removed from Toys "R" Us.

Missouri police are gearing up ? literally, riot-style ? in anticipation of protests in case a grand jury doesn't charge Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown.

"They complained when we militarized the police, but we did it for times like these, when we have to quell riots about police abuses."

    1. JeremyR   11 years ago

There are 1000s of people abuses in this country.

This was not one of them. Unless you think 6'5" 300 lb people who just robbed a store should be able to pummel police and steal their guns.

Beyond that, the whole point of police is largely to protect private property.

I realize many here probably have fantasies about mowing down waves of looters, but in reality, that's not gonna work out well for anyone. It's best to leave riot control to the police.

      1. JeremyR   11 years ago

D'oh. That should be police abuses.

But I mean seriously, there are so many better cases to rally around, instead of this guy or that Meyers.

Why not the guy that got shot in the Wal-Mart? That's a perfect case?

But I guess because he had a toy gun, he deserved in the eyes of liberals, and I guess Cosmotarians...

        1. Timon 19   11 years ago

          What the fuck?

Reason ran several bits about the Wal-Mart shooting and the only people who were defending the cops were assfaces like Tony.

        2. VG Zaytsev   11 years ago

Ever notice that every case the media whips into a frenzy is centered around race and involves a victim that turns out to have been a criminal?

It's almost like the media is more interested in dividing the public for the benefit of both political parties than it is in exposing real police abuse.

Which happens dozens of times a day across the country but only gets the media spotlight when it involves a black thug.

The real question is: is it worth the lives of 500,000 dead Iraqi children?

    1. Agammamon   11 years ago

If we're talking about Madeleine Albright shouldn't we be asking if it was worth 1k dead and million displaced Serbs and Albanians?

      1. John Titor   11 years ago

I think he's referring to the Clinton Iraq bombings, so Gulf War 1.5 I guess?

        1. Agammamon   11 years ago

Its funny - Albright may just be a warmonger on par with Kissinger, but she gets a pass on *two* wars, both started with as little authorization as Bush II's or any of Obama's.

          1. VG Zaytsev   11 years ago

Missouri police are gearing up ? literally, riot-style ? in anticipation of protests in case a grand jury doesn't charge Officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown.

I have a very bad feeling that this is going to make the Rodney King riots look like a walk in the park.

Though I completely expect that he'll be indicted and then found not guilty at trial. So we may have to wait a while.

    1. John   11 years ago

Great. Just let the mob indict an obviously innocent man.

      1. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

        an obviously innocent man

        1. RussianPrimeMinister   11 years ago

I'm of the opinion that we should let them riot anyway, bad premise or not.

It'll set a precedent, and we can then look forward to the inevitable revolution.

          I can hope, can't I?

    2. VG Zaytsev   11 years ago

I have a very bad feeling that this is going to make the Rodney King riots look like a walk in the park.

Nope, not a chance in hell.

The Rodney King riots got as bad as they did because the police intentionally pulled back from confrontation when they start. Daryll Gates (the chief at the time) was an old time cocksucker hardass and basically told the city to go fuck itself, as in so you think we're too tough, fine we'll sit this one out.

Because the commenters at reason are hysterics? Or are you doing a Shepard Smith impersonation?

I hope that flu shot gives you a rash.

      1. Cytotoxic   11 years ago

Some commenters at Reason are hysterics/xenophobes crassly using Ebola to get more restrictions on cross-border movement. One of our area yokeltarians has seriously tried to blame the EVD-68 outbreak on furriners on the basis of one paper he doesn't understand.

        1. Lady Bertrum   11 years ago

A couple over the top responses are blanket hysteria?

I grow tired of the hysteria over the "hysteria". Please stop.

          1. Cytotoxic   11 years ago

It's not a couple. A critical amount of the commentariat is displaying a lack of deference to expertise and instead relying on their own 'gut feeling'. This is unacceptable. It's especially disturbing because now I can't trust them wrt AGW.

It's not a couple. A critical amount of the commentariat is displaying a lack of deference to expertise and instead relying on their own 'gut feeling'.

              Wait, what?

Why would any idiot think that laws/rules preventing people from entering the country would be any different than laws/rules regarding owning guns?

People do know that laws don't have any magical powers, right?

              1. fuck you Belinda Carlisle   11 years ago

IS actually physically restricting flights a law/rule? Or is it an action?

Because while your point stands, it's irrelevant here.

                1. anon   11 years ago

                  S actually physically restricting flights a law/rule?

Well, I'd assume it's some TOP (wo)MAN'S order. So yes; it's attempting to deny a human a natural right, which (whether you believe it to be right or wrong) impossible.

            2. robc   11 years ago

Since when do we show any deference to expertise?

That's why you have the Federal Crimes Scene Sanitizing Service - remember, you can't professionalize until you federalize - and then you send the (hugely inflated) bill to the family members.

Don't forget the minor children who are on the hook because of the money the horrible criminal spent raising them - that was, morally, the government's money anyway.

Because of this new case, some lawmakers want to require a 21-day quarantine for any doctors returning to the U.S. from Ebola-stricken nations.

This should be something the CDC or any of our three Ebola Czars should be considering. If you've just come back from swimming in Ebola lake by caring for Ebola patients in the Hot Zone, then maybe, you know, some kind of testing or quarantine should take place.

So I'm reading over at Cafe Hayek today,

    http://cafehayek.com/2014/10/m.....ctive.html

And he's talking about why successful entrepreneurs don't have an obligation to pay higher tax rates. His argument is that entrepreneurs already 'donate' most of the value of their innovation to the public and only capture 2%, as such its the *public* who is getting outsized benefits.

those who enjoy disproportionate benefits from whatever entrepreneurial innovations are made possible by government-supplied infrastructure are, thus, arguably the general public rather than the successful entrepreneurs.

One thing he doesn't note however is - what're the options to using 'public' infrastructure.

There's pretty much only one builder of roads in this country - government. To say that government, with its self-given monopoly backed up by the use of force, deserves more money from these guys because it provides the infrastructure they use to make money is to ignore the fact that *there's no other option*.

    1. Invisible Finger   11 years ago

I think you're wrong here. The Boy Scouts specifically adopted a road in my neighborhood.

      1. Kreel Sarloo   11 years ago

The Boy Scouts specifically adopted a road...

I don't think that means what you think it means.

Maybe the Boy Scouts have agreed to pick up trash on a regular basis. This is usually what is meant by adopting a road, or a park or whatever.

I very much doubt that they have undertaken to finance the construction costs and manage the maintenance of or collect fees or tolls from users of "their" adopted road.

Watch That Windows Update: FTDI Drivers Are Killing "Fake" Chips (scare quotes mine, because there are is a grey area that I don't feel like covering, unless asked)

They released an update today to reverse it, but AFAIK it does not fix any devices they bricked, you're on your own for that. And it's totally fucked up that they did it in the first place.

    1. Cytotoxic   11 years ago

      Incredibly, Microsoft's sales are increasing.

      1. Carl ?s the level   11 years ago

        Cute.

          "Microsoft only distributed it."

          In their official channel no?

    2. kbolino   11 years ago

If I understand that correctly, they aren't bricked per se (soft bricked, maybe?), but would likely require a special driver or even kernel modification to restore.

Also it is very likely that the new drivers were developed by FTDI themselves, and so are just distributed (albeit automatically) through Windows Update.

      1. Carl ?s the level   11 years ago

Soft bricked is still bricked by most people's usage (though I do generally think it might be useful to have a separate term). But yes, what it does is set the PID to zero, and in most (all?) cases tools can be used to restore the PID.

And I am aware that Microsoft is playing the role of distributor, not developer. Hackaday is writing for an audience that is generally aware of that fact, and it didn't occur to me to mention it, lest the likes of Cytotoxic use it as an opportunity to get obnoxious.

        1. kbolino   11 years ago

        1. anon   11 years ago

I think they released an update to brick counterfeit chips. Why should counterfeiters reap the rewards of continuous software updates at no expense?

          1. kbolino   11 years ago

The counterfeiters aren't the ones paying the price; it would seem to be a simpler (and less tortuously destructive) choice to simply not support those devices.

          2. Carl ?s the level   11 years ago

            1. This does not only affect counterfeiters, it affects end-users who bought devices containing the counterfeit chips without realizing it. Yes, it is ultimately the fault of whomever put the chips in there in the first place (or passed it on to that person as real), but we do not make decisions in a vacuum.

            2. If all they wanted to do was ensure that "counterfeiters [would not] reap the rewards of continuous software updates at no expense", then they only needed to have the driver refuse to handle the counterfeit devices, not overwrite their PIDs.

          Are you actually this stupid?

          HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

          Oh please, more! More!

          1. Coeus   11 years ago

It's not like they had to seek it out, dipshit. You're so big on methodology, maybe read the whole section:

All current members of the American Trends Panel were originally recruited from the 2014 Political Polarization and Typology Survey, a large (n=10,013) national landline and cellphone random digit dial (RDD) survey conducted January 23rd to March 16th, 2014, in English and Spanish. At the end of that survey, respondents were invited to join the panel. The invitation was extended to all respondents who use the internet (from any location) and a random subsample of respondents who do not use the internet.

Of the 10,013 adults interviewed, 9,809 were invited to take part in the panel. A total of 5,338 agreed to participate and provided either a mailing address or an email address to which a welcome packet, a monetary incentive and future survey invitations could be sent. Panelists also receive a small monetary incentive after participating in each wave of the survey.

This is not like so many that we see that just sits there and waits for links from interested bloggers to send their sycophants to participate. No one had any idea what these questions would entail, and they were contacted randomly by phone.

            Try again.

            1. anon   11 years ago

and a random subsample of respondents who do not use the internet.

So at least some portion of the survey takers either lied or are functionally retarded.

              That's useful info.

              1. Coeus   11 years ago

So at least some portion of the survey takers either lied or are functionally retarded.

I'm reminded of your comment downthread. and I agree wholeheartedly.

            2. Episiarch   11 years ago

Oh god this is too good. Scramble and spin, there, tuff gai!

You used an idiotic self-administered internet survey to "prove" that "many" women can't handle criticism. And then instead of going "well, yeah, those are notoriously unreliable", you dug in instead. You. Are. A. Fucking. Idiot.

I don't have to try anything again, you do all the work for me, you fucking imbecile. Thanks for that, by the way.

              HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

              1. Coeus   11 years ago

Maybe use a few more caps. Ya know, instead of any data or even a dictionary. Seems to be working great for you so far.

                1. Episiarch   11 years ago

Ooh, yes! Neg me! It works so well for all your millions of conquests, it has to work on me too!

                  AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh, and keep on avoiding the fact that you thought a self-administered internet study means something. That is, by far, the funniest and most pathetic thing about this entire situation. You were so stupid you just believed it because you wanted it to be true. Oh god this is delicious.

                  1. anon   11 years ago

You were so stupid you just believed it because you wanted it to be true.

                    Are you a wizard?

                    1. Episiarch   11 years ago

                      I prefer Warlock.

                    2. anon   11 years ago

Ok, but I was under the impression that warlocks were like wizards only preferred bestiality to little boys.

                    3. Episiarch   11 years ago

Yes, your impression is correct. Is that your goat?

                  2. Coeus   11 years ago

So instead of any kind of argument, you're now going with something you made up in the fetid wasteland you call your mind. I probably should have realized how futile responding to you would be when you considered "many" to be a collectivizing word.

                    1. anon   11 years ago

"Many" is a useless term. It can me 3 or 3000000000.

                    2. anon   11 years ago

                      mean*

                    3. Coeus   11 years ago

"Many" is a useless term. It can me 3 or 3000000000.

Now that is a legitimate criticism. You are correct. It is vague. I should probably have said that it appears that the group complaining the most about harassment appears to heavily pull from the largest percentage of survey respondents who are traumatized at double the rate of the other category by internet interactions.

Phil Phish got doxed, threatened and run off the internet, but you hardly see it mentioned. Meanwhile Sarkesian and Brianna Wu are on CNN, MSNBC, BBC etc.

And the article linked above dovetails nicely with this one. As well as countless others I've seen.

                      She considers this:

                      Chris @octowombat
For what it's worth, with all due respect, @AmandaMarcotte does not exactly come across as a happy, fulfilled person to me. So there.

harassment. Harassment worthy of restructuring internet communications as we know it, no less.
                      (continued underneath)

                    4. Coeus   11 years ago

                      (continued)

And I just see link after link after link between those screaming about how horrible their internet harassment is and how broad they actually consider the phrase "harassment" to cover. I don't think it's much of a stretch to say they're pulling from that group of 40% who feel traumatized. So it leads to the thought process that I detailed in a reply to you down-thread. I should have been more clear, but I forget that not everyone is seeing the stuff that I link.

I'll cop to unclear, but collectivist it's not.

                    5. Cytotoxic   11 years ago

Epi is a twat who likes to use words he doesn't understand (ex collectivist) but I don't put too much stock in this survey. Self-selection? No.

                    6. Coeus   11 years ago

                      Self-selection? No.

It's not self-selected. I agree, those are mostly useless. And I'm not saying this is the word of Zod, or anything, but consider this:

No one chimes like this in the comments on a reason article that uses a pew survey with the same methodology to talk about attitudes towards pot legalization, do they?

                    7. Episiarch   11 years ago

Holy fuck you're stupid. You are the collectivizing element you dumb fuck, not the word "many". You have the track record of being a moronic misogynistic fuck--that makes you a collectivist, by the way, I know you have trouble grasping these things--and it's hilarious watching you post idiotic shit which you think reinforces your collectivism without realizing how stupid it makes you look.

Keep this up, this shit is comedy gold.

                    8. Coeus   11 years ago

You have the track record of being a moronic misogynistic fuck--that makes you a collectivist

Interesting. Care to back that up with anything? Anything at all? Got a link? Cause there's no shortage of comments to mine through. Go ahead. Give it a whirl.

Keep this up, this shit is comedy gold.

Why am i not surprised that someone dumb enough to expect that everyone agrees with their own private vocabulary is easily amused?

      SJW irony alert:

I know it feels good to belong to a group, to feel righteous in belonging to a cause, but causing fear and pushing people away from gaming is not the way to go about doing it. Think through the repercussions of your actions and the people you are aligning yourself with. And think honestly about whether your actions are genuinely going to change gaming life for the better.

Man, they really, really hate it when they're not the ones with the torches and pitchforks, don't they?

You are correct. Survey would have been more accurate. Apologies.

        1. Horatio   11 years ago

Just one apology is needed. Why do you feel the need to collectivize everything?

Many women view criticism as traumatizing.

Many people are idiots. Women, being people, do not surprise in this regard.

      1. Coeus   11 years ago

Agreed. But at numbers almost as high as 40 percent, it helps to explain some things I was wondering about. I've read so many articles complaining about harassment, then seen the examples posted. Most of the stuff the SJWs post is just rude criticism, usually lighter than what they themselves dish out on twitter.

I just figured they were faking. But maybe most of them aren't. Maybe they really feel that getting called an idiot for labeling someone a rapist because of an unsourced blog post they read is really vile harassment.

It changes my perspective on a few things.

Hey, it's the weekend, so here's some good news: TLC is cancelling Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

    NOoooooooooooo...!!!

Conan O'Brien joked on Twitter: "I picked out my Halloween costume. I'm going as 'Slutty Madeleine Albright.'" The former Secretary of State responded: "I'm considering going as hunky Conan O'Brien - but that might be too far fetched."

And I'm going as the million-Iraqi-dead-is-worth-it Madeleine Albright, because I really want to scare some kids next Friday.

Now, normally I think the racial grievances towards the press are bullshit or even backwards. But I've got to give you this one. While having read about her, I didn't even know she was black. I guess they just use the other nurse's picture every time they talk about them both in an article.
