Wyoming Becomes Latest State To Legalize Gay Marriage

The thirty-second state to do so.

Wyoming has become the latest state to allow gay marriage, bringing the national wave of expanded rights for same-sex couples to a state where the 1998 beating death of Matthew Shepard still influences national perceptions.

State lawyers filed a legal notice Tuesday morning that said they won't defend a recently overturned Wyoming law that defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman, meaning county clerks can begin to issue marriage licenses to gay couples and the state will recognize same-sex unions performed legally elsewhere.

I am all in favor of gay people having the joys of losing half of their net worth to some "loved one" who found somebody they like better, has more money or a bigger love muscle. But Wyoming didn't "allow gays to marry." A judge said they had to and the state decided not to waste millions of dollars just to lose the appeal. That's not the same thing as a vote of the populace to extend marital status to gay couples. Just sayin'.

That's exactly what I came here to inquire about. The law was "overturned." By what? A popular vote? No? Wyoming didn't legalize gay marriage; it surrendered to it.
