Gov. Jerry Brown Signs Cali's Plastic Bag Ban
Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed the nation's first statewide ban on single-use plastic bags at grocery and convenience stores, driven to action by pollution in streets and waterways.
A national coalition of plastic bag manufacturers immediately said it would seek a voter referendum to repeal the law, which is scheduled to take effect in July 2015.
Under SB270, plastic bags will be phased out of checkout counters at large grocery stores and supermarkets such as Wal-Mart and Target starting next summer, and convenience stores and pharmacies in 2016. The law does not apply to bags used for fruits, vegetables or meats, or to shopping bags used at other retailers. It allows grocers to charge a fee of at least 10 cents for using paper bags.

They misspelled "requires".
the law actually allows grocery stores to charge 10 cents per bag tax free. The idea is that grocery stores will charge for paper bags leaving to only economical alternative those cloth reusable bags. So, in california, it's best to bring your own bags to the grocery store. no more of this convenience of the store having complimentary bags for you.
I wonder if they can have some sort of "Buy five items, get one free plastic bag" promotion.

"I wonder if they can have some sort of "Buy five items, get one free plastic bag" promotion."
Yeah, and if you shop in a local store, they somehow 'forget' to add the charge. So this is political grandstanding by moonbeam; nothing more.
And "driven to action by pollution in streets and waterways." is totally unsupported by evidence; it's 'everybody knows' crap.
Social tolerance!
That look close to the "Green police" as shown in that 2010 Audi ad.

Every time my relatives come in from Arizona or Texas, I'll tell them BRING PLASTIC BAGS!!! And nylon stockings, and chocolate!
It's funny they call these "single use" bags. don't they realize people use these bags for more than just getting their groceries home? Now people are going to have to buy small trash bags for things like picking up dog poop, lining small bathroom trash bins, taking their lunch to work, etc. This is a regressive policy.
For those who missed it in the Independents thread:
"There is a lot of plastic trash floating in the Pacific Ocean, but claims that the "Great Garbage Patch" between California and Japan is twice the size of Texas are grossly exaggerated, according to a new analysis."
[...]
"The relationship between microbes and plastic is what drew White and her C-MORE colleagues to their analysis in the first place. During a recent expedition, they discovered that photosynthetic microbes were thriving on many plastic particles, in essence confirming that plastic is prime real estate for certain microbes.
White also noted that while plastic may be beneficial to some organisms, it can also be toxic. Specifically, it is well-known that plastic debris can adsorb toxins such as PCB.
"On one hand, these plastics may help remove toxins from the water," she said. "On the other hand, these same toxin-laden particles may be ingested by fish and seabirds. Plastic clearly does not belong in the ocean."

Note the worst she can say about them is they 'don't belong'. Neither do ships "belong" in the ocean, lady.
You have to be a truly filthy piece of human debris to willingly live in California.
