The Onion Joins Reason in Bashing the War on Moms

Reason's reporting on the government's war on parents who give their kids a modicum of freedom and responsibility has brought scrutiny to an out-of-control nanny state. Now even The Onion is making fun of cops and busybodies who treat parents like criminals for letting their kids play by themselves.
The Onion's latest infographic asks "Should Parents Who Let Kids Play Outside Unsupervised Be Arrested?" Some hilarious answers:
Absolutely not. I only support it when people get arrested for things that could never happen to me.
Yes, it's much more responsible to leave your children unsupervised at home.
No way. When I was a kid, we played outside by ourselves and everyone except Brian came home just fine.
Best of all:
Of course. You can never have too many reasons to arrest people who can't afford child care.
Reason's Lenore Skenazy has been documenting this exact phenomenon: Consider the case of Debra Harrell, a low-income mother who was arrested for letting her daughter play at the park while she worked at McDonald's.
But it's not just the financially disadvantaged—parents of all stripes are threatened by the mindset that an independent child is an endangered one. Recently, children's author Kari Anne Roy was investigated by Child Protective Services because a neighbor reported her for letting her child play on a public bench within sight of the house.

I'm not sure who disgusts me more. The cops or the nazi neighbor that reported her.
I have an adopted son who's almost two and black. I had the cops called on me twice while hang out with him in public.
The scumbags who call are the worst, but I have to wonder why the cops even responded when told the facts, or at least didn't go back and reprimand the caller after verifying.
Wrong outcome and my son would be taken back to our notorious foster care system. Good lookin out, concerned citizen!
If the races were reversed, you'd probably be in a coma or a coffin right now.
Principal Lewis: Now, a grown black man and a young white boy driving cross country?that feels right.
*passes car with grown white man and his young black companion*
Principal Lewis: Now that there?that is sick.
Being the parent of a child who's skin color does not match your own is a real eye opening experience into how deep and reflexive racial tribalism is.
More negatives have come from blacks. Something about him learning his "heritage" and who's gonna prepare him for the black experience?
Totally understand what you mean, though my son is half-Indian. Same shit, though.
Tyler Perry movies....duh!
"Reprimand the caller after verifying"?
Charge that bastard with a *hate crime*!
"But if kids are allowed out of their parent's supervision, they'll grow up with the idea that they can do just fine out of the government's supervision."
When I was a kid, we played outside by ourselves and everyone except Brian came home just fine.
That's my experience. Brian unwisely decided to climb a transmission tower.
Serious question: Did this change gradually, or did some precipitating event(s) bend the twig?
Gradually. The real answer to all this hysteria is that people are having fewer children. This leads to an overinvestment of attention to the child to the point of a very skewed sense of odds.
How about requiring a rudimentary understanding of probability and statistics in order to, say, obtain a driver's license?
RACIST SEXIST!!11!
Probably.
I'd say that the proliferation of media outlets is no less important..
Are they driving the story or just telling the people what they want to hear?
It's not so much what people want to hear as what is profitable to tell them. In Other News Today: Nothing Much Really Happened doesn't grab people's attention. Baby Girl Halfway Across the Country Abducted does.
When you mix that with the limited time people have to devote to information gathering and the nature of the availability heuristic you end up with a feedback loop of alarmism.

No way to publications that traffic in commercialized teenage rebellion agree that cops suck. No way man. Guess what guys the Onion agrees with you all time on every social issue because both Reason and the Onion support social leftism. This can't be news to you. I mean you guys get that you and Bernie Sanders agree on about 45 percent of the issues and he's a socialist.
Thanks!
So, you agree that moms should be arrested for letting their kids play outside in front of the house?

Our other trolls can at least write decently.
No, they cant.
Yes we can!

Social Leftism: Because not jailing moms who let their kids play outside is a communist plot!
Don't dads as well as moms get arrested for this sort of thing? Or maybe not because patriarchy.
To be honest, if there's ever a sign of the otherwise ephemeral WAR ON WOMYNS, this is it. You're welcome to near limitless assistance from the state, but God help you if you try to help yourself. Bootstraps are for men; lady workers get handcuffs.
But you'll never, ever hear anyone espousing the WAR ON WOMYNS narrative acknowledge the incentives engendered by public assistance to single mothers, nor the heavy hand of the State on the shoulders of women who opt to live without it. Fighting patriarchy means subsisting on the dole.
Duh - there are no fathers because SINGLE MOTHERS, so...
Yes, they should be arrested, because it takes a village to tax enough revenue to build a prison to hold them all. Then, said village can finally, actually raise them.
So, if we're all in prison, it will be like a utopian commune? A truly Democratic Kampuchea America?
As long as TOP MEN are the prison guards, that's pretty much utopia.
Nah, we don't need a prison. Just give out some soma. Everyone belongs to everyone else!
