'I Am Not an Isolationist,' Says Rand Paul

Can we at least get "non-interventionist"?

If I had been in President Obama's shoes, I would have acted more decisively and strongly against ISIS.

Some pundits are surprised that I support destroying the Islamic State in Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) militarily. They shouldn't be. I've said since I began public life that I am not an isolationist, nor am I an interventionist. I look at the world, and consider war, realistically and constitutionally.

I still see war as the last resort. But I agree with Reagan's idea that no country should mistake U.S. reluctance for war for a lack of resolve.

  1. Getting approval by congress is a tough hurdle and I think Rand
is wisely saying he is more hawkish than he really is.

    It’s smart.

  2. Truthful Rand Paul:

“My political calculus holds that Republican voters don’t want to see 4,500 Americans lose their lives in the Iraq War only to see the nation fall into the hands of Islamist goons who murder American journalists for propaganda purposes. Therefore, I will continue to entangle the United States military in an area that has been more trouble than it’s worth for 100 years because that’s what’s popular in the era of an unabashed American Empire. If you claim that this invites terrorism to our nation or say the word blowback, you’re engaging in victim blaming.”

I will give Rand this: since his first slip-up on the CRA, he’s played the political game exceptionally well. He even invokes Reagan, like all good conservatives should.

  3. The ISIS needs to be crushed. Sure thing, dude. Most Americans agree. But who does the killing on the ground, and who pays the price tag? Think about it. Raise your hand if you do not know the answer.
