NY City Councilman Wants to Ban Toys in Happy Meals

New York City Councilman—and Bloomberg-in-training—Ben Kallos has proposed legislation to stop fast food restaurants from putting toys in Happy Meals that contain too many calories. From CBS New York:
Kallos has now introduced a bill Thursday that would put an end to putting toys in kids' meals that are often unhealthy.
The measure, dubbed "Healthy Happy Meals," would ban fast food restaurants from offering free toys and other incentives with kids' meals, like a McDonald's Happy Meal, if the food in the children's meal contains more than 500 calories and more than 600 milligrams of sodium.
"We're trying to make sure that any happy meal is a healthy happy meal, and making sure that any incentives, be they toys or anything else, are tied to healthy meal choices and healthy eating," Kallos said.
It would also require the inclusion of a fruit, a vegetable or a whole grain serving.
Good luck getting through that entire article without choking on the nanny statism being shoved down your throat (the accompanying video is unwatchable—freedom lovers will vomit).
Readers will remember that this kind of thing was tried in San Francisco a few years ago. The law was mocked by all and eventually food chains found ways around it. And a few months ago, a court invalidated New York City's attempt to police sugary beverage consumption. With any hope, Kallo's proposal won't even get that far.

For the love of God, Montresor! For the love of God!
+1 small barrel of sherry
I thought it was a cask...
"We're trying to make sure that any happy meal is a healthy happy meal, and making sure that any incentives, be they toys or anything else, are tied to healthy meal choices and healthy eating."
Then "we" should buy controlling interest in McDonald's and alter the menus accordingly. Otherwise, "We" can fuck off, slaver.
It's politicians like this that make we wish we could put a "New Texas" amendment in the Constitution. That way we could legally beat the shit out of people who propose laws like this.
OT: headed to VT, land of grinding socialism and open gun laws, tonight. Behave yourselves (or not) while I'm gone! I'll have a black raspberry creemee for y'all.
"grinding"??!? You mean like tribbing?
You wish.
Hoorah! More new 'norms'!
In San Francisco, they were trying to ban circumcision for a while, too. It really wasn't about what they said it was about; they were basically lashing out at anything family or child-related in the wake of Proposition 8 passing. You "breeders" wouldn't let us marry--now we're comin' for your happy meals.
Banzai!
I don't know what's driving this in New York. I keep thinking the candidates there are trying to distract people from big problems that the politicians there have no intention of solving because doing so would offend their more important constituencies--but maybe they really are just bat-shit insane.
Maybe it's some of both.
Wow, so you know that everyone supporting that was just doing payback? Nobody actually cared about the children?
Yeah, that's exactly what I said.
Wow, it's almost like you noticed how every city council functions, everywhere and always!
They could also be bat-shit insane.
They might genuinely believe that this is the kind of thing the voters put them in office to do.
They might actually think they're helping people.
I don't know New York. It's possible.
But if it's low-sodium, organic, free-range vomit, it'd be acceptable to these Shitty Council members, amirite?
Would these people complain about comic books being supplied with happy meals? I got into a reading-while-eating habit when kids meals at some places (alas, not McDonald's) often included a mini-sized Gold Key comic book. I was always disappointed when I got a toy instead of a comic book - I was allowed to read during meal time, not play.
So, in short this guy wants to take toys away from little children.
He's in the pocket of the Free-Range Organic Artisanal Toy-Makers and Allied Trades Union, local 404. The kids will get their their toys, but they'd better like dreamcatchers made from quinoa and non-cis-gendered pro-action community organizing figures made from sustainable bamboo. Negotiations are in progress.
Here's another take on the story:
http://thinkprogress.org/healt.....fast-food/
allowed McDonald's to "gut this health ordinance" and "continue to seduce children."
Yea, it's not like those kids have parents that can say "no", or anything. Also, I KNEW that clown was a PEDO!
Run over the hills dude, run.

So??? Like sat fat, our war on sodium is turning out to be a dead-end too. And 500 cals isn't that much, esp if you get the right macronutrient ratios right.
Oh, well then, add more carbs to the mix, that'll take care of it!!
