You May (Legally) Unlock Your Cellphone Once Again
No longer a copyright infringement
President Obama this afternoon signed into law a bill that makes it legal for consumers to unlock their cell phones.
"As long as their phone is compatible and they have complied with their contracts, consumers will now be able to enjoy the freedom of taking their mobile service - and a phone they already own - to the carrier that best fits their needs," the White House said in a statement.

Oh how nice of him. I wonder what the telecom companies are getting out of this...
consumers will now be able to enjoy the freedom...
Note that tyhey make it sound like they're generously giving a new freedom, not that they are restoring a freedom that was taken away by gov't to begin with.
Yeah, I was gonna say, wasn't it the DMCA that made this a "crime" in the first place?
I believe so.
Are ObamaPhones included?
How does Carlos Slim feel about this?
Surely Carlos Slim and F.J. Pollak will be receiving very generous compensation through the backroom accounts.
Maybe force everyone to buy a smartphone. One that has functions completely unnecessary for your needs. Pay for it by gouging some and subsidizing others. BC having a smartphone is a basic human right.
Free speech is a human right, therefore the government must purchase everyone a cell smart phone.
