Squirrels
We apologize for the intermittent problems posting comments at Reason.com. This is related to high loads on the server, and every time we think we get the issues under control they come back. We now plan to transition to a new web server early next week. We're optimistic that this will be a long term fix. Please bear with us during the transition and thanks for commenting (or for at least trying to comment) at Hit & Run.
Editor's Note: As of February 29, 2024, commenting privileges on reason.com posts are limited to Reason Plus subscribers. Past commenters are grandfathered in for a temporary period. Check-one-two. Two. Two! Is this thing on. We appear to be working. Just wanted to post a typically recursive comment.

This is only a test...
Heckuva test, sir.

CUSTOMER SERVICE! I LIKE IT! Thanks.
They'll never leave!!!
GAH!
"Every time we think we get the issues under control... they come back... We shoot them, we stab them, we try and set them on fire... nothing works. Every time i turn around one of them is gnawing on another intern's entrails, staring at me with its glowing green eyes. The only thing left is to nuke them from Space. Its the only way to be sure."
This is related to high heavy loads [of bollocks]...
We know which posters you refer to, you sly devil.
What did Fist do?
I think it is pronounced, "What does the Fist say? Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding! Gering-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!"
So I just clicked the tag below for squirrels and there was nothing there.
I only lost one comment to the ether today.
I've taken to clicking the "Preview" button. If my comment doesn't preview, I know it's not going to go through. Copy it to a note and then refresh the page....
And when preview fails, put some text into the comments box and refresh. If the text is still there, preview will not work. If the text disappears, type something else and hit preview. Chances are it will work, and then so will submit.
Except the *one* time I forget to preview, I lose the most awesomest post evar.
Yeah....SURE you did.
Please don't change commenting platforms. Especially not to anything like Disqus or Livefyre.
Disqus will end me posting.
Damn, maybe I shouldnt have said that.
Whatever they use at SBNation.com is amazing. Second to none on the internet.
'tis.
Apparently it is Vox Media.
I rold them a few years ago to look at that.
As did I.
Absolutely this.
THIS.
I. Love. Disqus.
Better API hooks for posting first, or because no one will ever post to it, giving you free reign?
"Please don't change commenting platforms. Especially not to anything like Disqus or Livefyre."
OH GOD NO
I like Disqus (though less since they disabled downvote counts) and dislike Livefyre.
(sets date for DDOS BOT attack to early next week)
(eagerly awaits video of Reason interns leaping from 3rd floor windows)
Is it the webserver that's under heavy load, or the backend server that hosts the database? Because I don't know what your topography is, but it feels like a backend server issue. I see the website fine, but posting the comment is where it fails.
I think it's front end because when the buttons fail, they aren't going to ever work on that page until it refreshes properly. If it was on the back end then I would expect continued pressing of the buttons would eventually cause them to work.
If it was on the back end then I would expect continued pressing of the buttons would eventually cause them to work.
But that's exactly what we're (I'm) seeing.
The website is fine, you press preview or submit, nothing, keep hitting it, again... again... again... again... again... again... again... again (website refreshing correctly every time) then finally *wham* comment posts.
So what was the deal with the pre-filled text hack? Was that a hack of reasonable or something worse?
I was not able to post this comment.
#normancoordinate
NEVER ADMIT THERE'S A PROBLEM. It shows weakness.
High loads?
Bullshit.
It's true. Their munin is not password protected if you want to check for yourself.
Look, Pentium III's can only handle so much load.
Unlike your mom
Don't make fun of my mom's multi-threading!
Hmm... Let's try this.
Hi Squirrels! May your loins be full of nuts, and your mating season productive.
Woohoo!
Sweet talk works.
Disqus will end me posting.
This, right here.
In
SPADES.
*briefly considers how much more effectively he could use his time, shrugs*
it would certainly help lower my blood pressure
I'd have to change companies, because no way am I going to explain tripling productivity to the current guys. Although... "cocaine is a helluva drug" might just go over in the consulting world.
DDoS attacks?
I think it's just users addicted to Taboola.
Is Mike Alissi shilling for Big Squirrel?
HA, the entire reason.com domain just 404'd
That's what happens when you bounce the server.
testes ... one ... two ....
Can we have avatars? We could take the obnoxiousness to whole new level.
NOOOOOOO
Yes. I want avatars. And I'm even willing to deal with the inevitable obnoxious few who will use pictures of genitalia.
One-third will have avatars with the Gadsden Flag; the other third upside-down crosses; and the other third will be goatse.
I want comment up/down-voting.
GUYS LOOK! IT'S A TALKING SQUIRREL! And it even knows it's a squirrel!
Watch some Germans try to pronounce squirrels
Finally.
An explanamation.
Well, I just saw this, but nice to see. You guys don't have your own server do you? Hostgator has some very solid hosting service. I use them for several sites, never had any issues and the customer service is great. And no, I don't work for them, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and I play a software engineer in real life.
Hey Mike, now that we've moved Baby Reason (and her new sister Baby Liberty Ordeth) to DC, can we get some love from the DC office staff like we always got from Mary Toledo?
Also, if you're in the LA office, can you give her our best regards?
Welcome to NoVa
I'm sure everyone is still psychologically scarred from that brutal winter.
