Obama Announces $5 Billion Anti-Terror Fund, Chicago Wants To Film You Buying Guns, Majority of Kids Are Unfit: P.M. Links

-
Disney President Barack Obama announced a plan for a $5 billion anti-terrorism fund. Some of that money will go (as rumored yesterday) to members of the Syrian opposition.
- Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants every single firearm purchase in the city to be filmed. Emanuel is also pushing forward with ride-share rules. Soon, the city will be so bogged down with regulations it'll sink into Lake Michigan.
- The military is working on a chip that will be implanted in the brain to treat things like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
- A federal judge has ordered Ohio to halt any executions for two months while it figures out its lethal injection procedure. The last guy the state killed gasped for nearly half an hour.
- A virus that killed 7 million pigs and spiked pork prices last year is back and veterinarians don't know how to contain it.
- A new report from the Centers for Disease Control says that the majority of American adolescents (even the skinny ones) fail to meet the "bare minimum threshold of being called 'fit.'"

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants every single firearm purchase in the city to be flimed.
Can't he just check out their Facebook page like any normal person?
Should they maybe focus on actual diseases... they can... control? Also, maybe they can take a look into SQUIRLZ!
Speaking of the CDC: More than 2 dozen CDC employees sick with virus.
"A virus outbreak at a CDC-occupied building in DeKalb County had several employees working from home today.
A gastroenteritis virus at a CDC building at Century Center has affected about 30 people, agency spokesman Tom Skinner told Channel 2 Action News.
He said employees of the affected building were sent home early Friday afternoon and were encouraged to telecommute until Thursday, the station reported."
Dogfuckers
More recess, less classroom busy work.
This is obviously going to prevent the next mass shooting.
Take it easy, at least he's doing something
Why not just film people when they shoot each other?
Because police unions object to their members being recorded?
Boom... one internet, for you... well played. Well played.
Rahming speed!
Glad to know that physical education has kept pace with more intellectual educational subjects.

That's like awarding al Qaeda five thousand Nobel Peace Prizes.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants every single firearm purchase in the city to be flimed.
He's a flim flam man
I figure he'll be jacking it to the videos.

Bacon shortage: hipsters and paleo dieters hardest hit.
Sounds like an Al-Qaeda plot
If I can't get my Trader Joe's Black Forest Bacon, there will be hell to pay.
Why!? Trader Joe's Applewood Smoked Bacon or GTFO.
So this is what it's come to, jesse. You realize that this is war, right?
(starts sharpening knives)
You've held many disgusting opinions, Epi, but to prefer the Black Forest Bacon over the Applewood Smoked Bacon is by far the foulest. Never has their been so just a cause for war.
*Injects skanks with Hep C*
I'm ready for battle.
For some reason I mentally picture this being accompanied by the Popeye power-up music.
Meh, I get their bacon cast-off packs for half the money and just as good.
I didn't realize you were poor, Scruffy. Now I can't talk to you.
Miserly bastard is more accurate
I'm with jesse. Having tried both, the applewood is...superior.
How many of you tasteless cretins are going to stab me in the back today?!?
Tell you what, each of you send me a pack of your preferred flavor, and I will be the final arbiter. The loser, of course, will be set adrift on an ice floe. So be quick, because HuffPo says ice floes will be gone by like November.
Deep dish applewood smoked bacon pizza.
I've done far worse than hurt you...I've left you as you left your mom. In the basement....
I just went to the Tampa Trader Joe's this past weekend and stocked up. I love that place. They're my sole source for decent, packaged pumpkin seeds.
Have you tried the Peruvian rice yet?
Crap, I completely forgot about that.
Frozen section, called "Chimichurri Rice".
Remember, you get to kick me in the balls if you don't like it.
My agent, Warty has been advised of the possibility and has cleared his calendar.
Jesse, we're all hit hard when there's no bacon.
Costco bacon or GTFO.
I have GTFO and sent my wife to Sams to get theirs.
A man should always buy his own bacon. Turn in your man card immediately.
I'd have to get a Sam's card and I keep forgetting to...I ask forgiveness
Jeez Playa, look what taking his man card has done to him... Give it back, this is a pitiable display.
A man should always buy his own bacon. Turn in your man card immediately.
You turn in your man card. A real man would carve the pork side into slabs himself, cure 'em, and smoke 'em in a cast-off refrigerator outside the basement door.
Jeez. I use pork belly for other things.
I live in a city. If I carved up a pork side, it would be like that episode of Workaholics.
The solution is to REDEFINE "fit".
Fit for what?
Fit for running... for a taxpayer funded elected office?
It is against the law to have sex with a corpse in Illinois, therefore Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel should have cameras installed in his bedroom and office, just to be sure he's not breaking the law.

Wait, so if you don't like Maya Angelou's poetry, you're racist?
So, if you don't like Spike Lee movies, does that also make your racist? Because, honestly, I've never really understood his appeal.
I didn't like it either when I was forced to read it.
Honestly, I just don't like her status as a darling of the Democratic Party.
Never really got over her breakthrough moment when she spoke at Clinton's first inauguration.
I was pleased to read in her obit she had a career as a human trafficker.
???
Whorehouse madam.
Link?
She spent the next several years bouncing between jobs, scraping by first as a streetcar conductor and cook who read the Russians ? Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Chekhov ? in her free time. She said she also fell in love with a man who worked as a pimp, which led her to prostitution and then a stint as a madam.
This is not in the NYT obit, by the way
This is my surprised face.
Well, that's news. It's also interesting that James Lipton was, like Tattaglia, a pimp.
So is this all celebrities, then?
The Punisher actor (first film) claimed he was a rent boy.
The first film was Dolph Lungren.

Are you callin' Ivan Drago a whore?
Oops. Always thought Thomas Jane was the first one. He's the man-whore.
Still like his version better than the Ray Stevenson one. Must see how Dolph played it..I feel I will be disappointed as much as Stallone was when he married Brigitte Nielson
He has a Masters in Chemical Engineering, and I believe he was accepted to MIT for doctoral work (though I don't know if he actually attended or completed his work there).
David Lo Pan is an engineer, too (civil), and actually worked in the field before leaving it for acting.
Dolph is also pretty libertarian...at least based on the one interview that gets around where he complains about the Swedish Socialists.
"Brothel keeper"
Never really got over her breakthrough moment when she spoke at Clinton's first inauguration.
Of course she spoke at his inauguration. First black president.
You'd have a hard time being more racist than Spike himself. His movies are vastly overrated and it's frankly hard to get past how much of his racism is apparent in his work.
I liked 25th Hour and I think he's a competent craftsman at his work.
I just he's more a product of the pretentious film critics who like to describe his work as "important."
Forget "important." How about "entertaining?"
I remember 25th Hour being pretty decent, though it's probably been like 10 years since I've seen it.
And I don't remember any racism jumping out at me in Inside Man, though I guess it's hard to inject a race angle into a bank heist movie, which I guess is why it's always surprised me slightly that Lee directed that one.
His movies are vastly overrated and it's frankly hard to get past how much of his racism is apparent in his work.
Thank you, finally something you and I agree on. *glowers at my mom*
However, as racist as Spike is, his racism bothers me less than how dated his movies seem (watch a 90s spike joint today, and you're struck by how pass? it is.) Although I'll watch Girl 6 all day with the sound off because Theresa Randle.
And his other stuff is just boooooring. He was struck by that 90s 'pure dialog is cool' bug that unfortunately infected Tarantino.
I liked his Malcolm X biopic.

The radio host that replaced Kennedy in the Morning, had a delightful meltdown when people started calling one of his staff members a racist for not knowing who Angelou was.
Paraphrasing: "Don't you get tired of being offended All. The. Time? Eff off and don't listen to the show."
I know who she is, but I haven't been interested in her work. Racist?
I thought we just assumed you're racist because you're in Florida.
Well, you got me there.
Did he say "don't you people get tired of being offended by everything?" Because that would be like, meta racist.
Whatta you mean, "you people"?
You have to love the artistic subtlety of the man's political messages, such as the giant "Tawana told the truth" graffiti message on the brick wall.
By the way, Brawley, aka "Tawana Vacenia Thompson Gutierrez" of Hopewell, Virginia started paying Steven Pagones the $431,000 in defamation damages she owes him about a year ago.
Hopewell? Jesus, that's punishment enough.
"So, if you don't like Spike Lee movies, does that also make your racist? Because, honestly, I've never really understood his appeal."
Maya Angelou sucks.
Spike Lee = You don't have to like the themes of his movies particularly to appreciate that he's actually a very good director. He's a solid technician and gets good work out of actors.
Some of his things are exceptional. his first 2 (She's Gotta Have It, and Do The Right Thing) have a very distinct, exaggerated theatrical style that was something he more or less invented. But he could also do 'straight' movies a la Inside Man, or epic-biopics like X, and they are tight and polished pieces of work by any standard.
Compare his stuff to your average 'straight out of MTV/Commercials' directors, who don't know how to tell stories, and do 'Michael bay' shake-the-camera/distort perspective tricks endlessly to seem 'interesting', and you might appreciate why he's more of a quality old-school filmmaker.
You can think he's a dick, and not personally like his work, but you can't really argue that the guy isn't extremely competent at his job.
That said...
(I was just browsing his IMDB entry)
...he's made a lot of movies, a lot of which were pretty much stinkers/non-events.
I will agree that he is a competent director, but he's really nothing special. He has some style, but mostly he's just competent and not much more. He often gets good performances out of his actors, I'll grant you that (Giancarlo Esposito as Buggin Out is a good example). But there are many, many better directors than him. If he weren't doing films that have appealing messages to certain types, no one would know who he is.
Yes, he's okay, technically, but no big deal. He's treated as better than he is because of his political appeal more than anything else.
Sure.
And if Dolly Parton didn't have big tits she'd just be a decent singer. The fact that he's stuck in an endless 1990s "Fight the power"/race-war mode is sort of his whole differentiation-point.
The fact is, there are very very very few artists who you can say, "Take away the specific thing that they use to seem different and they're just 'average'"
1. Kubrick.
....
....
....
uh, Gary Oldman.
And that's it!
Not a big fan. I liked Crooklyn okay, but not much else.
I saw an io9 post that had a video with H. Jon Benjamin voicing HAL in the 2001 scene where HAL denies Dave entry into the ship, and one of the comments (I know, I know, but I didn't intentionally read it) trashed the movie and Kubrick. Guess it didn't include enough Dr. Who.
With some directors, what makes them "different" is their pure talent. Such as Kubrick or Spielberg. Then there are the Lee types, where what makes them different is their usually chosen subject matter. It's being recognized for politics when your talent isn't enough.
Lee could never even come close to making a Jaws or a Clockwork Orange. Not in a million years.
Spike Lee's 2001. HAL is a black computer, avenging centuries of oppression by killing all of the white men on Discovery. All of them were white guys, you know.
Some of his things are exceptional. his first 2 (She's Gotta Have It, and Do The Right Thing)
...gotta have it
Mediocre acting but an impressive college-level first effort. Boring themes.
Do The Right Thing
One of his better movies, but when watched now, feels dated, very dated.
You can think he's a dick, and not personally like his work, but you can't really argue that the guy isn't extremely competent at his job.
He is. But when he goes outside his genre, his writing is actually quite weak.
Plus, his use of music in his movies is poorly chosen and distracting to the dialog.
He sticks in Jazz tracks during quiet talking moments between characters, and I keep wanting to shout, "Could someone turn down the radio, I'm trying to hear these people talk!"
And the music doesn't always fit the emotional character of the scene.
And wasn't it Lee who was pissed that Clint Eastwood directed Bird...can't have a white man do a jazz biopic or some segregated thinking like that.
Don't know, but it sounds exactly like a Spike Lee tantrum.
Dude should just write 90s-style critical theory on race and let the rest of us get on with our lives.
He was pissy at Clint about the lack of black actors in "Flags of our Fathers".
He had some other 'not well thought out' comments about Katrina and Trayvon as well.
Shows how ignorant he is as the Marines only had a few blacks at that time (Montford Point didn't get going until about 43 I think) and I bet hardly any were at Iwo and I know none were Infantry.
And units were segregated until Korea.
Speaking of Spike Lee and dicks, I cut a wizz next to him in the St. Louis airport the Monday after the million man march. He was on crutches and when I glanced over at him he looked up at me with his standard early 90s style, I was taken aback and could only say "nice penis".
A federal judge has ordered Ohio to halt any executions for two months while it figures out its lethal injection procedure.
I hear lead works
If we're going to have a death penalty (we shouldn't), that would be the best way. But that wouldn't be quite as quiet and ignorable as injection/electric chair.
Heroin overdose. Quick and (unless Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction is realistic) sleepy/painless.
Not saying she is not incredible at acting, just that the coke/H mixture they had her on in the movie may have explained that scene.
"A federal judge has ordered Ohio to halt any executions for two months while it figures out its lethal injection procedure. The last guy the state killed gasped for nearly half an hour."
Riiight... So much more humane than a few hollow-points to the head...
Or, as my brother suggested, a few ounces of C4 to the brain-stem. The nervous system doesn't work fast enough to register "pain" before the pain center is gone. Better yet, any "failure" would simply be solved with a new blasting cap. No pain there either!

Whatever. As if the billions we already spend via the DoD, foreign military aid, CIA budgets, all sorts of overseas intelligence activities were ostensibly going to "something else".
Acting like we're suddenly going to hand out $$ to foreign governments to spend *how they want* on anti-something activities is na?ve to the extreme. California lawmakers 'do something', propose 'gun restraining order' bill
The measure, by Assemblyman Das Williams (D-Santa Barbara) and Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), as well as state Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), would create a "gun violence restraining order," using the same process that restraining orders are granted in cases of domestic violence.
Family members, partners and friends would have the ability to alert law enforcement if they believe someone poses a threat to themselves or others. Law enforcement officers would then be able to petition a judge to grant a restraining order that could prohibit possession or purchase of a gun.
Skinner said last weekend's mass shooting near UCSB illustrated gaps in the state's gun and mental health laws. The family of Elliot Rodger, who police say was the shooter, had raised concerns with law enforcement about his mental state; Santa Barbara sheriff's deputies visited Rodger at his apartment in April, but did not take any action against him.
"Because California doesn't have a gun violence prevention restraining order, she didn't have the ability to go to law enforcement or petition a judge, and ask to have, in effect, his ability to either possess or buy guns revoked," Skinner said.
Gee, can't see any problems there
Moron: I don't this GMSM should have a gun!
Judge: Good enough for me.
DUE PROCESS!
This completely ignores the fact that the SB sheriffs weren't even aware of his possession of firearms and that had they been aware of that through a simple search of his residence, they might have actually called the parents and warned them (at which point mommy and daddy could cut the kids money off)
Really, Sudden? You hang here and still think the SB Sheriff's deputies would have just ignored the guns and called his 'rents?
Not sure if cutting him off would have been the right thing; might have set him off worse, might have caused him to man the fuck up - maybe sell the guns. I don't know.

Apparently, it means "demanding justice for [women] who have been brutalised and murdered." I'm not sure what that entails exactly, but apparently it conflicts with "demanding tolerance for men as a group."
I'm fairly certain that special ed is already a thing, MS.
Doh!
How does saying not all men kill dismiss the reality that some men do?
Allow me to femsplain it this way:

Auric, if you're around, I agree about NASA being the big question mark about Dragon V2 or whatever SpaceX is calling its manned spacecraft this week. The entrenched aerospace companies will use their influence to slow things down, too, I fear.
Given the situation with Russia, the logical thing would be for SpaceX to do a manned test, maybe even this year. With NASA throwing up hurdles, I bet it's at least a couple of years from now, unless we actually get cut off by the Russians.
In reality, versus bureaucratic la-la land, Dragon is likely to be at least as safe as the shuttle with just a little more integration testing and maybe a couple of abort tests.
Slightly off topic, but the latest NASA monstrosity is supposedly on track.
Will probably end up unaffordable and too complex (search youtube for the test of the crazy launch abort system)
http://news.yahoo.com/nasas-me.....IAcLbQtDMD
On track for what, a Power Point presentation? NASA has lost its way entirely when it comes to manned spaceflight. It's all abortive attempts now and no real progress.
It's an employment program for Marshall, Boeing and Lockheed.
It's good to recycle, but it's just SSMEs in a Saturn-like tube and a new capsule. More computers and safety crap will make it less reliable as with all modern, government run tech programs.
Look, I just want cheap access to orbit. NASA couldn't provide that in a century, mostly due to all of the politics. So SpaceX and others like them are our only hope.
You'd think Boeing et al. would be worried and try to develop a commercially viable system or two, but I guess they've played the game so long that they're stuck on the government teat. They may even be right to think that way, though I sure hope not.
Duke student accused of rape expelled from campus, sues to get degree
Lewis McLeod, a psychology major and former soccer player from Australia, was banned from the May 10 graduation ceremony after the woman accused him of raping her Nov. 14 in his room at the Sigma Nu fraternity house.
McLeod told his attorneys the woman had gone to Duke University and Durham police, and they decided not to charge him with a crime.
A spokeswoman for Durham police told WRAL-TV she had no record of the investigation, but court documents show the department investigated the day after the alleged assault and determined the use of force was "not applicable."
McLeod was found guilty of sexual assault by a three-member disciplinary panel convened by the university Office of Student Conduct, which issued a no-contact order and barred McLeod from the campus.
But he violated the on-campus restriction at least once and was also issued a trespassing citation, reported Indy Week.
The former student said he had consensual sex with the woman, who he said then "got emotional" and began to cry.
McLeod said he stopped having sex with the woman. She said he did not, and she told university officials she offered to perform any other sex act but intercourse.
But he's an entitled white male dude, so fuck him, right?

"Many Americans and their political leaders in both parties, including President Obama, have either forgotten or rejected the assumptions that undergirded American foreign policy for the past seven decades.
