Finding the Truth at Benghazi
Here comes Watergate, 21st-century style-except this time around, innocent people died.

When the White House, in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the fearless private watchdog group Judicial Watch, turned over an email about constructing the appropriate narrative response to the tragedy at Benghazi written by Ben Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser to President Obama, and investigators from the House of Representatives realized that they had subpoenaed that email and not received it, they knew that there was far more to learn about the affair than met the eye.
The affair consisted of an organized, fatal assault on the American consulate in that Libyan city that resulted in the deaths of the American ambassador and three State Department contractors assigned to protect him. It also includes a White House-orchestrated cover-up involving profoundly misleading statements after the attack, followed by an only-in-Washington cover-up of the cover-up.
The attack on the consulate occurred on Sept. 11, 2012, the 11th anniversary of 9/11, just as the American presidential election campaign between Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney was getting under way. Two weeks prior to the attack, Obama had assured his political supporters for the hundredth time that al-Qaida was on the run, its leadership had been subdued, and that he was the cause of that. The last thing his campaign managers wanted to confront in the middle of September was an al-Qaida-orchestrated attack on American property in the Middle East in which our ambassador was murdered.
Yet, that's what confronted the Obama campaign managers. So, they concocted a narrative that they could comfortably live with and that they believed the American public would accept. Susan Rice, then the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, relayed the narrative. Rice either permitted herself to become a political tool or materially lied to the American public when she told five Sunday morning talk shows on Sept. 16, 2012, that the attacks in Benghazi were not acts of terror and were not aimed at the ambassador, but rather were the spontaneous and unplanned reaction of a street crowd to a cheap, anti-Muslim Internet clip that some jerk in California had made earlier that summer.
For a while, this seemed successful. The president was able to continue misleading the electorate with his claim that al-Qaida was on the run, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was able to distance herself from the failure of her State Department to protect its own employees, and Romney and the Republicans would not discover the truth, or at least would not develop a narrative sufficient to contradict the White House narrative, until after the election.
It worked.
Now, with the discovery of the Rhodes email, it appears that the White House did use the instruments of government to aid the president's re-election campaign by deceiving the American people and telegraphing that proposed deception to the president's campaign officials. Using government personnel and assets to coordinate a political campaign, even if done truthfully and above board, violates federal criminal statutes.
As if that were not bad enough, it now appears that the State Department had special operations forces in close proximity to Benghazi, and the White House ordered them to stand down rather than confront the attackers, meet force with force, and endeavor to save the lives of the ambassador and others, though at the risk of contradicting the president's political boast.
When the truth—that the Benghazi attack was an al-Qaida-organized assault complete with military hardware and sophisticated planning—became known, and when the apparent deception by the president, the White House, and the State Department was discovered, Republicans were furious.
Then the cover-up of the cover-up began, as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform learned when it tried to determine who told the U.S. forces to stand down, who dispatched Rice to tell lies, who certified that the Rhodes email did not exist, and who then eventually released it. The committee wanted to know whether Rice was duped or was part of a plot to use the instruments of government to lie and deceive and enhance Obama's chances of defeating Romney.
So, the Oversight Committee issued subpoenas and held hearings and concluded—a conclusion with which even the Democrats now agree—that the Benghazi attack was part of an organized terrorist assault, and the consulate was undefended.
Then Judicial Watch revealed the reply to its FOIA request of the White House, which included the Rhodes email, and a political firestorm broke loose. Speaker John Boehner addressed that firestorm by asking the House to form a Select Committee—one whose sole goal is to get to the bottom of this—and to grant it a serious budget and a full legal and investigative staff, and to set it loose upon the administration's deceivers.
Already, the administration has declared that many of the documents the Select Committee will seek have been classified as top secret, and the president is free to classify any document he wants for any reason he chooses. Legally, that argument is correct. Frustrated congressional Republicans have no one to blame but themselves here, as they gave that legal power to President George W. Bush.
Nevertheless, can the Select Committee subpoena the president and his records to find out where he was during the eight-hour attack, who gave the order to stand down and permit murder rather than suffer political embarrassment, and who concocted the Rice deceptions? Yes. And he will claim executive privilege, and a federal judge will make the call.
And so, here comes Watergate, 21st-century style—except this time around, innocent people died. This time around, will it have the same outcome?

Dude that makes a lot of sense man.

If you've ever read Rising Sun by Micheal Chrichton, you know that he points out the difference between American and Japanese reactions to problems is that the Japanese reaction is "How do we fix this?" and the American is "Who do we blame for this?".
I agree that there are problems with Benghazi, but I don't believe for a second that the GOP is looking to see what went wrong and how to prevent a future such incident. (With the possible exception of Rand Paul, of course.) Naturally, fixing a security hole involves getting to the bottom of what exactly happened - protecting ourselves from organized military action is different than defending against an inflamed mob of religious fanatics - but the GOP investigation starts and ends with "what did the president know and when did he know it".
I want to know what exactly was going on in Benghazi that made it a prime target for these guys. Was the CIA running some kind of illicit operations out of Benghazi as I suspect? Or was it just a target of opportunity?
Don't disparage blaming and shaming. Maybe if we blame all the political hacks involved in the coverups and make sure that they never get another job in government the next time someone wants to pull a con job like this there are is some pushback.
Maybe if we make sure Susan Rice is mocked everywhere she goes, the next hack might not be so quick to spout inane talking points.
Well said.
It should be illegal when people in government lie to us about their mistakes.
That's *crazy talk*, Tim! How would the citizens have any confidence in government?
Republicans don't want to get into that because it necessarily leads to greater discussions of our foreign policy and its implications. Can't have that.
There's nothing wrong with blaming. The problem with US politics is that far too many politicians equate placing the blame with fixing the problem.
Well said. And that is because it does fix the problem, from their point of view -- the problem of how to get elected.
We need to outsource government to the Japanese? WTF is it with the irrelevant points?
Yeah, and I'm not buying the "How do we fix this" definition of Japanese reaction to problems. If they were dedicated to fixing problems, well, they'd fix some of their persistent economic and cultural issues. You know, 20 years of economic malaise being one.
They are hard core Keynesians, and think they are doing jjust that, the evidence to the contrary be damned. So they do have much in common with our leaders that also embrace Keynesian economics.
the idea that the japanese do not place blame is false. In Japan once blame is found the person at fault in the past had his head cut off, today they are socially forced into suicide.
Both seem like good ideas.
Sometimes the problem is having an incompetent in charge.
Sometimes?! It seems that it's most of the time now. Unless you consider political shit competence.
One way to fix something is to find out who is responsible and hold them accountable. That doesn't mean you just kill anyone who makes a mistake. It does however mean that you make sure that they and everyone else knows what they did wrong and take steps to assure it won't happen again.
Beyond that, you can't fix something if you don't know what happened. The administration has lied about this from the very beginning. If they had been honest and admitted what happened from the beginning, you would have a point. They have not however done that. Because of their dishonesty, you don't have a point. The Republicans have no choice but to launch an investigation and force people to testify because the administration leaves them no other option to find out the truth.
Sorry but the "Republicans are just big meanies" talking point doesn't get the administration off the hook here.
"If you've ever read Rising Sun by Micheal Chrichton, you know that he points out the difference between American and Japanese reactions to problems is that the Japanese reaction is "How do we fix this?" and the American is "Who do we blame for this?"."
Japan, as with most of Asia, is infamous for pointing fingers at others for their own problems.
You really can't understand a culture by reading a novel. Most Japanese leaders accept responsibility for the negative and when that has brought shame unto their family, company or country they resign or even ultimately perform Seppuku. Our leaders deflect blame, mislead and lie to avoid accepting responsibility. When it becomes obvious they can longer deny something they pay inconsequential and cynical lip service to accepting responsibility and then do nothing. Our President is the type who wouldn't admit to farting if he was the only one in the room. This case was especially hideous since the outcome was the death of 4 including the first Ambassador killed on the ground in 30 years. They lied and they spun a ridiculous yarn that in one way made them look even more incompetent. Which leads me to believe that they are hiding something even more nefarious. This is about making sure this doesn't happen again and equally important holding Hillary and Obama personally responsible for the lack of security, the lack of response the cover up and the sheer incompetence of this administration. Don't forget they work for us and we have to make them accountable.
"...the president is free to classify any document he wants for any reason he chooses. Legally, that argument is correct. Frustrated congressional Republicans have no one to blame but themselves here, as they gave that legal power to President George W. Bush."
Of course none of the people that voted for that ever saw it as a problem.
If they gave that legal power to the presidency, then they should also be able to rescind it.
The Republicans have no credibility here. Most of the GOP pols screaming BENGHAZI! voted for every military action in the last 13 years or so, and haven't reflected on the disastrous outcome (hundreds of thousands dead for no particularly good reason). But 4 people die in a sh*thole in Libya and it's the end of the f*cking world.
Thats right. At this point, what difference does it make?
arrrrrrrrg
Ugh, okay, should have expected that response. What I'm saying is, I agree that the Obama Administration's actions were horsesh*t (did any reasonable person think Benghazi happened because of some low-grade Youtube movie?) but the people holding him accountable are awful hypocrites. Also, I think there are bigger fish to fry than this.
What fish may they be?
Since when does all end because there are other things to fry? This issue hasn't been figured out yet you want to move on?
I think it's incumbent on Americans to find out what happened. So far, everything is pointing towards the White House engaging in deception and incompetence. Worse, their lie led to an arrest of a citizen!
If you serve your country, don't you want them to come and protect you when in danger? Why were stand down orders given?
That attacks on embassies and other government properties have always occurred is irrelevant. We all know they do; except the story with this one is a little different as a diplomat - a person that represents the United States of America - who was by all accounts extremely well respected by Libyans, was murdered.
I don't understand people who don't want to know at the very least.
I think it's incumbent on Americans to find out what happened. So far, everything is pointing towards the White House engaging in deception and incompetence.
I agree that we need to find out what happened, but let's start at the beginning. I don't think those guys chose to attack the consulate at Benghazi because the White House engaged in deception and incompetence. The White House was engaged in covering their ass by deceptively concealing their incompetence after the fact, but I want to know why Benghazi was chosen as a target in the first place. Was there something going on there that shouldn't have been, were there security flaws that should have been fixed, is their another Benghazi waiting to happen? Or was it just a random attack that, had it not been Benghazi, would have taken place somewhere else?
I get you need to cover your ass a little but this is stretching things a tad.
I don't get why more people aren't bringing up the arrest of the sap who made the stupid movie. I can't even fathom the mendaciousness of someone who knows that the movie didn't play any part in this whole fiasco, but still has a guy locked up just to cover his ass.
Yeah, it takes a certain set of arrogant balls to lock someone up you know had nothing to do with an event - in this case Benghazi.
It was for a probation violation.
Palin's Buttplug|5.8.14 @ 8:38AM|#
"It was for a probation violation."
So it was Bush's fault, you sleazebag?
It was for a good cause.... There was an election on the line...
There were NO STAND DOWN ORDERS GIVEN.
That is a Fox News lie.
And you know that because Choco Nixon told you so while you were sucking his cock, right?
Palin's Buttplug|5.8.14 @ 8:37AM|#
"That is a Fox News lie."
Slimeball, when you start listing Obo's lies (that's OK, you can use more than one post), somebody here might think that you have an interest other than licking that lying bastards ass.
PB, I wish you would actually provide a citation for this. Because I haven't actually followed this closely, and if stand down orders really is a lie, I'd like to know. But all I have to go on is your assertion. I don't see this issue being covered in any substantial way by the news sources I follow.
The same people who told us it was because of the video told us that there was no stand down order. Duh!
Look, sure their turned out to be a coordinated effort run out of the White House to cover up the terrorist attack and the subsequent actions, and sure, we only just found out about it after many months of concerted legal action by various media and open government organizations, but we all know that this whole thing is really just a plot by the Republican party and their lackies at Faux News to attack the President because they can't deal with the fact that he won in a landslide.
They have told us that there is nothing to see here. Why can't you just let it go?
Tu quoque
So, the awful hypocrites should be doing something even more important?
Trying to get your point. If someone voted for, let's say, authorization to use force in Iraq, then they should just keep quiet about Benghazi?
It is if you're a former secretary of state planning on running for president in 2016.
I'd like to see some reflection and repenting from the people who voted for authorization of force in Iraq. And if that reflection and repenting doesn't happen, then that person doesn't deserve to be taken seriously.
There was actually credible evidence that the embassy was threatened, meaning those who voted for the war have even more of an obligation to press this issue.
Two democrat presidents got us involved in the Vietnam war. FDR ignored early warnings that Pearl Harbor was a target and then rounded up Japanese Americans. Bill Clinton is self explanatory.
If a Republican who voted for the war questioned why the DEA covered up a drug raid that killed 4 innocent people, you're going to fold your arms and say, "but you voted for the war, you hypocrite"? Don't play that game. This is apples and oranges.
I want them held accountable!! I don't give a shit what the "republicans" want. I want the f-ing truth from the people who work for us, or just come out and state that we're the bitches of government and let me relax my sphincter.
This. I only care about Republicans in the sense that they're the tool to beat the Administration. I don't give a shit about the political implication for Republicans.
Is it good for Republicans to go after Hillary and O? Is it bad for them long term politically? Do they look like nuts?
I don't give a shit what's good for Republicans politically - strategically.
Hillary and O lied about Benghazi; they concocted a b.s. story about a video to cover up their own incompetence right before an election. Bury them.
+3

..."(did any reasonable person think Benghazi happened because of some low-grade Youtube movie?)"...
Enough that Obo has not yet been held accountable.
I think there are bigger fish to fry than this.
Sounds like we need more/bigger frying pans. I'm all for a fish fry.
Really. What difference, at this point, does it make?
I love this quote and think it'll probably end Hillary's aspirations.
The bumper stickers and t-shirts will sell themselves. The cynicism. The pure unadulterated, self-preserving cynicism of the line is beautiful.
Yep. I imagine blurting that out is her single greatest regret.
That, and the fact that she looked like Harry Caray while she made it.
I love this quote and think it'll probably end Hillary's aspirations.
Until the media gets done spinning the narrative that it was merely an expression of frustration over the continued bullying of a bunch of Rethuglikkkan meanies.
By the time they're done she'll be a sympathetic figure who was set upon by a gang of hypocrits and bullies. Or at least that's how they'll try to spin it.
"I am not a crook."
Lines like this get remembered long after the details behind them are forgotten.
"I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinski!"
(Or was it Blewinski? Oh well, no matter.)
And if that doesn't do it, there's plenty more where that came from. Anyone remember, "We came, we saw, he died," followed by a cackle?
Why does your hypocrisy excuse my wrong doing? That is first class sophistry you are pulling. Who cares if the Republicans are hypocrites? If that matters, then the administration could do anything and never worry about being held accountable because they only people to investigate them are the hypocritical Republicans. The administration never being held accountable for anything I suspect is of course exactly the result you are looking for.
The rest of us are a bit more hard nosed about this stuff.
FAIL
The rest of you are also Team Red through-and-through. I've observed threads for years where you all try to paint PB or whoever the hell else as Team Blue cheerleaders, and yourselves as independent thinkers with no political party affiliation, when in reality you're just Republicans.
So PB isn't a team blue cheerleader and you've accused everyone here of just being closeted Republicans. Can you next claim that you're not trolling, just asking questions, and that you're terribly, deeply concerned about how how libertarians will be viewed if they keep harping on this issue? Because those are my next two spaces in Hit 'n Run Troll Bingo.
I don't think he is a troll. He has just become so polarized that anyone that doesn't share his worldview is a Republican. He has reduced the world to two viewpoints. Much like a Christian that can only view the world as Christians and Pagans, lumping all the other world's religions together.
'We' aren't one of his people thus we are 'other' and he has only the label Republican for that.
But I feel fairly certain that he is completely honest in that belief and not trolling.
BTW: Not picking on Democrats or Christians here. All polarized group worldviews work this way.
I've observed threads for years where you all try to paint PB or whoever the hell else as Team Blue cheerleaders,
You sound very concerned about this.
There is a new study out that shows that internet trolls tend to be sociopaths, psychopaths and sadists.
So, remember that the next time you find yourself wanting to engage one.
So what if we are? That doesn't make the facts here any different.
Ad hominem is a fallacy for a reason. Your whole point is that valid points should be ignored because you don't like who is making them. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. If the Republicans suck, well I guess Obama shouldn't have fucked up and let them have such a good point to make.
nope
I've observed threads for years where you all try to paint PB or whoever the hell else as Team Blue cheerleaders,
Mein Gott! Has that fucker, PB, really been here that long? Geez, but time flies.
And I mean the Republicans are hypocrites in this area -- national security, foreign intervention, etc.
is a prostitute a hypocrite when she calls the police when she's been raped. I don't think so and therefore the republicans, hypocrites they may be are the only ones available to actually find out what did happen in Bengazi and show that our president is a liar who would arrest someone not involved with the situation to cover his ass. I don't know of any Republican that has had American citizens arrested to cover their ass.
It is a scary thing when citizens are arrested for something a terrorist has done what will stop them from arresting others for shear pleasure next.
so what?
The rest of us are a bit more hard nosed ...
In his defense, it's difficult to be hard nosed about anything when you're chin deep up your own ass.
It's not that four people are dead. It's that their sacrifice is dishonored by a political lie. Among other issues.
Another concern is that they might well have been sacrificed for political gain (or to avoid political loss).
Republican did not act in a vacuum. the democrats are equally complicit. This is about a complete failure of leadership that is so incompetent that creates an equally incompetent narrative and tries to sweep it under the rug. I want to hold these cretins responsible and I want them punished for the arrogance that resulted in the incompetence that led to these unnecessary deaths. Their clearly was criminal negligence on the part of the State Department and our White House.
And so, here comes Watergate, 21st-century style?except this time around, innocent people died. This time around, will it have the same outcome?
"Let me be clear. There are, uh, some who say I am a crook."
Fake scandal!
Lara Logan is being fired from CBS/60 Minutes for piling on this fake scandal. Of course CBS has integrity and when one of their top reporters reports lies they suffer the consequences.
Fox News reporters get a bonus for lying.

Two words dipshit: Dan. Rather.
Thank you. I was laughing too hard to type a proper response myself.
Look, Dan Rather has told us that even though the facts were faked, he's still sure that the larger story is true. So lay off.
The needle on my sarcasm meter is quivering all over the gauge on this one. Help me calibrate it. Are you being ironic?

Wars always do that - even when they're conducted by Democrat administrations, as so many in the past have been. There are actually morons out there who think it's good for the economy - a variation of the Broken Window fallacy. And it may actually be good for some segments of the economy short term, but other segments suffer.

How noble that you'll never again vote for a term limited Obama. As for Hilary, I think you'll come around to the idea once the cheap political advertising kicks into gear and you'll tell yourself you're voting for the lesser of two evils.
I voted for Gary Johnson in 2012.
Me too, and yet, we agree on almost nothing else.

So because Bush launched a war you don't like, it is okay for Obama to allow the deaths of 4 Americans.
By your logic, you have no right to say anything about Iraq. Johnson launched a wwar that killed 57,000 Americans. If Iraq precludes the Republicans from saying anything about this, doesn't Vietnam preclude Democrats from saying anything about Iraq?
That is nonsense Alice and you know it.
John, I though I made it clear in my post that I'm not particularly happy with Obama's war policy.
I didn't like Bushes war nor did I like Obamas involvement.
I'm not Democrat nor Republican nor Libertarian.
I'm a Liberal. Just like the faithful are duped by the Republicans, the Liberals are Duped by the Democrats.
I can say whatever I wish. I am an objector to war. Especially wars for the sake of commercial interests.
What about your ideology is "liberal"? Is it the virtually limitless version of government power you regularly advocate? Is it that massive amount of extortion and economic destruction you support as being the bedrock of a sound economy? Is it the regulatory overreach you promote?
I'm interested as to why you've chosen such a label for yourself, since basically everything you support is the antithesis of liberty.
That is your opinion. There are many things that I'm not particularly cool on that Libertarians advocate.
However, I feel that with some mutual respect, we can debate matters and you may see that we can sometimes compromise and even change each other's position on matters on occasions.
This is my favorite site. I've been here for years.

In this place, the meaning of words evolves amorphously until they support The Cause.

Alice Bowen,
I like your posts. They are well written and informative. Regrettably, you have to deal with Neo Nazis like Sevo. He pops up frequently like a chronic disease. There are millions of Americans like him these days, or becoming like him. Unfortunately, I'm a name caller too. Whenever someone bad mouths me because they don't like what I wrote, I insult them back fourfold plus. Nothing much changes of course, but at least they know that if they f*** with me they will get a reply. Anyway, keep your comments coming.
Sorry, I meant Alice Bowie.
Alice Bowen,
I like your posts. They are well written and informative.
5/8/2014 shall henceforth be regarded as opposite day.
No it's a fact. Modern American Liberalism doesn't promote liberty, it promotes political power. It's a fact x100
Even where we agree, like say, on murder. We both agree murder is bad, but whereas I apply that moral principle consistently and universally, people like you create arbitrary classes of people who are exempt from certain moral rules. You and I have very little common ground beyond your rhetorical support of what you call freedom.
OHHHHH, you are "liberal"?
As in "Progressive"?
As in Socialist Utopian?
Wow, bet Gary wishes he could give your vote back.
How did Obama "allow the deaths of 4 Americans"? If you're going to be obsessed with this bullshit partisan bag of nothing, at least be precise about it.

"How did Obama "allow the deaths of 4 Americans"?"
I'm sure you have so 'clever' sophistry saved up, but what happened is that the people involved quite possibly might have been saved if Clinton and Obo had listened to the information and sent some troops to help.
They didn't for fear action like that would show Obo's policies to be the mistakes they were, and they went on to concoct lies to hide the political motivations.
So, you see, Obo lied and people died.
Or if they'd taken all the danger warning seriously and kept them out of there. This is compounded by the arrogance of government to think it can make everyfriking thing it wants secret. If there was something important going on in Benghazi just tell us about it and move on.
The assertion Tony, is that by virtue of refusing to harden the consulate against attack, and by refusing to provide military support during the attack, Obama and his administration willfully exposed, and refused to mitigate, increased risks to the ambassador and his team.
Now, let us assume, for the sake of argument, that this is not what really happened, despite the evidence that current supports this conclusion.
One would assume that the administration would be eager to provide copious documentation to demonstrate this so as to rub it in the nose of the GOP.
The fact that they instead attempt to prevent any documents from being provide without them being redacted to uselessness suggests that demonstrating innocent is not the focus on the administration.
When he repeatedly denied the requests for additional security from the diplomatic staff, military contractors, the Libyan government, the CIA and regional military command. All to reinforce myths about Obama having defeated Al Qaeda that were convenient electorally.

How about the truth of the over 6,000 Americans killed and countless catastrophically injured for the procurement scam called the Iraq/Afghan war that netted millions to various American Commercial interest.
Lybia is something Obama should had never involved us in. He and Hillary and the likes will never ever AGAIN get a vote from me. I voted for him to stop these wars. Instead, he continues to sell murdering equipment and continues to murder all sorts of people conveniently from the safety of his bunkers and behind his secret services while the rest of us are subjected to the anger and attacks of the people we attack.
FUCK Bhengazi already. They are the collateral damage to our Middle East Policy.
Reagan Bombed Lybia in the 1980s. Lybia took revenge on us by destroying PM Flight 103. Then we take revenge again. Good know's what's next.
The Trillion Dollar expense of the 9/11 attacks is the result of the Gulf war and our general policy in the Middle East.

"How about the truth of the over 6,000 Americans killed and countless catastrophically injured for the procurement scam called the Iraq/Afghan war that netted millions to various American Commercial interest."
You ignorant twit, what does this have to do with anything other than misdirection?
Hey there Sevo,
Your head is not far enough up your bung hole. Insert it a few inches more and it will make contact with you brain.
Oh, oh! I'm hurt!
You can't reasonably defend Bhengazi, by saying "but HE did it too!
First, most of the people here were not supportive of the other issues either.
Second, if you rob a bank and get caught, pointing out that other banks were robbed and no one was caught and sentenced, is not actually a defense.
"Second, if you rob a bank and get caught, pointing out that other banks were robbed and no one was caught and sentenced, is not actually a defense."
If this message ever 'took' on Alice, Tony and the Road idjit, they would be amazed!
Watergate is the foundation of the investigative journalist, with tenacity and determination, discovered that a disturbed President was so paranoid about his re-election, he sent a group of inept burglars to break into his opponents office to see what they were up to. He had a double digit lead. They were caught, he resigned.
"Japanese reaction is "How do we fix this?" and the American is "Who do we blame for this?".
The truth about this incident could have changed an election for President of the United States. Stonewalling and lies, with MSM in lock step, may have steered the election in Obama's favor. You have to blame(indict) a criminal before you convict them.
Do we need to find solutions to what happened to these fine Men. Definitely! But we aren't getting any information from the POTUS, to find out what happened, for if we did, people would be going to jail, impeached.
Hillary Clinton and Obama looked in the faces of widows and parents of these brave souls and told them they died because of a video on U tube with 215 hits on it. A bold face lie! Why? Because the truth might have effected his election and her political future.Somebody needs to be blamed for this, if they do, that will start fixing the problem!
Lets not forget you have to find out what happened before you can fix something and if someone is lying about the cause and we believe that lie then any fix based on the lie will be the wrong fix. Therefore we have to have hearings to get to the truth of the matter so that we can find the correct fix.
Actually, it turned out that Nixon did NOT send the "plumbers" to the break-in. He found out about it afterward and participated in the coverup.
Not that the first excused the second. In fact, it demonstrates well that covering up a crime is also a crime.
Note that this is actually what got Bill Clinton into trouble. It was not his antics with Monica, but his attempts to cover up his antics with Monica that got in trouble. And for those that was to argue, he was cited for contempt over perjury and lost his law license over it.
Actually, it turned out that Nixon did NOT send the "plumbers" to the break-in. He found out about it afterward and participated in the coverup.
In the interest of historical accuracy I'm glad you clarified that. Nixon was bad enough - no need for anyone to overstate what he did.
I think a reasonable comprise is that critics of Obama will only bring up Benghazi for half as long as Democrats have been bringing up Watergate to discredit Republicans.
So, what, about 20 more years of Benghazi and counting?
Outcome matters. Nixon resigned and was discredited by it. Obama and Hillary will surely survive. The media landscape isn't what it once was. Benghazi is only a nutty witch hunt desperate Republicans scream about. Nothing to see here move on.
Benghazi is only a nutty witch hunt desperate Republicans scream about.
Now you're making sense.
And the public becomes even more cynical and distrustful because of the double standards and corruption. That'll help Obama and Hillary convince them they want an ever expanding role for the feds in our lives.
Either way the progressives lose.
What are you talking about? Progressives never lose. They move the goalposts until they get their way, then declare everything to be settled.
If you continually shit in your own nest, it eventually becomes uninhabitable.
Obama was at some Hollywood fundraiser overnight whining about the dysfunction of Washington and how that dysfunction makes it impossible to accomplish anything substantive. Gee, I wonder if he thinks concocting a false story about Benghazi and lying about is part of the dysfunction.
Polls show the public thinks he's a liar and don't trust him. That's a good thing from a libertarian perspective.
We try.
yes, you ARE "trying"
The media landscape isn't what it once was.
Oh, but I think it probably is. The msm is just as progressive as it ever was, going all the way back to when they were favoring Adlai Stevenson for president. If Nixon had been a Democrat, I don't think much would have ever happened about Watergate. Not that that in any way excuses him or lessens what he did.
You forgot another key aspect of the compromise. If Republicans cannot bring up Bengazi because they are just hypocrites, then Democrats are precluded from bringing up any Republican scandal. If the standard is only those without sin can raise an objection to the other side's behavior, I guess nothing either side does can ever be a political issue again.
What are you talking about? Compromise means the Democrats get their way and fuck everyone else. You should know that.

Alice: It's okay. It was a good post. I actually agree with you.. at least to an extent: Benghazi was the result of years and years of a misguided American policy in the Middle East... which has it roots in the misguided policies of the former British Empire (among other entities). I would like to think that if there had been more non-interventionist (and I don't mean isolationist) members in Congress and in the White House, during those years, that the entire history of this nation's relationship with nations in the Middle East would be different. Imagine no first (and second) war on Iraq, no 9/11, no wars over oil. And while we can't undo what has happened, or the mistakes which were made, it is possible to start anew, and simply keep our noses out of other peoples' business (at least politically and militarily). We shall reap the bad fruit of the past actions of our various administrations for many years to come, but not, necessarily, forever. As far as Benghazi, yeah, the repubs are after political blood. Yep. They are largely scum. And the same can be said for the demos, who are trying to save their political asses. But for me, as with Watergate (which I am old enough to vividly remember), and the Pentagon Papers, I really DO want to know what happened, and who is responsible. I already know WHY it happened, and it wasn't a post on Youtube.
I'm old enough to vividly remember Watergate, too. I definitely want to know what happened with Benghazi. But more than that, I want to see some of the elites responsible pay some real and personal consequences for their actions, incompetence, and mendacity in the matter - instead of just meaninglessly mouthing that they are "accepting full responsibility." If it takes backing a bunch of hypocritical Republicans, then so be it.
Does anyone really believe that politicians who are in the process of smearing another politician (in this case Hillary because she might run for President) really give a damn about those people who got killed in some North African stink hole? I doubt it.
Of course the righteous right media is sucking this incident dry, just like the hefty left media used the 1983 Beirut, Lebanon Barracks Bombings (where 220 U.S. Marines plus other Americans were wiped out by a bunch of religious fanatic suicide bombers) as a major propaganda surge. This was under the watch of Saint Ronald Reagan.
Who remembers the Lebanon debacle today? Most Americans can't even remember what happened last week in the world. In fact most Americans probably could not even point out Libya on a map, much less the location of some armpit place called Benghazi. Historians will remember the place from the World War II North African Theater of War.
In the end, the dead will be forgotten except by the families, and the media and the politicians will move on to other (soon to be forgotten) scandals. In the process, everything will be twisted around, and bent out of shape to fit some stinking ideological agenda. And of course the dead don't realize they are being used as pawns.
Does anyone really believe that politicians who are in the process of smearing another politician (in this case Hillary because she might run for President) really give a damn about those people who got killed in some North African stink hole? I doubt it.
So if someone murders my wife and the prosecutor doesn't really give a shit about her and just wants to win a murder case to help his career, the guy who murdered her shouldn't be prosecuted? By your logic no or at very least only prosecutors who care about the victims on a deep personal level can ever prosecute a case.
You people are going to have to come up with better talking points than this. No one gives a shit that the Republicans are just a bunch of cynical meanies who won't give the Democrats a pass here. Sucks to be Obama I guess.
Hey there JOHN,
I just knew that some functional semi-literate with reading comprehension problems such as yourself would come up with some moron comment on my post.
Read my comments again a**hole! What did I say? My point was that most media types and politicians don't really give a damn about the victims (Libya bombings in this case) because they are too busy with their smear campaigns.
With that said, you need to get a tutor for reading comprehension before you post your literary farts. Have a nice day dickhead.
Yes, you said they don't care about the victims. So what? Why does that matter? The only reason it could possibly matter is because it somehow reflects on the case at hand, which is of course ridiculous.
Either you had no point or you are engaging in ad hominem. Which is it?
John,

One of the merits of a 2 party system is that one party will occasionally attempt to hold the other one accountable.
Occasionally the players in the political theater known as "The Two Party System" take it too far and actually start opposing one another.
Neither Reagan nor George Schultz blamed the Marine barracks attack on anti-Muslim propaganda for weeks after the attack occurred.
This entire thing would have been let go a long time ago if the administration had been completely upfront about its efforts both during and after the attack happened. Instead, President Butt Naked and his minions blatantly deflected questions on exactly what it was we were doing there, why the attack happend, and why we weren't able to coordinate any sort of relief effort. It lied and blamed the attack on a video that hardly anyone had seen. If the administration had simply said, "We didn't expect this attack, we didn't anticipate the level of security required, and we didn't have the resources to assist in the consulate's defense--and here's everything that documents and confirms these points. We'll do everything we can to make sure this doesn't happen again," guess what? The whole fucking thing goes away forever, like it did for Reagan.
But that's not what happened. This administration is so thin-skinned that it reflexively tries to find someone or something to blame.

The thing that everyone keeps forgetting to mention (and is the truly impeachable offense, IMO) is that Nakoula Basseley Nakoula was charged with a parole violation and spent a year in jail for using a pseudonym on the YouTube video that had *nothing* to do with the Benghazi attack. If the administration hadn't been pushing the YouTube video lie so hard, would Nakoula have ever been charged for something so inconsequential, let alone spend a year in jail for it?
No, government personnel died. There's a difference.
No. Because "FAKE SKANDULL!!!111!!!!1!!!"
I like the Judge, I really do. But his credibility plummets when he states 'as facts' that Benghazi was a US consulate. It was not. There was no 'consul' there and it did not provide the functions of a consulate. It was only referred to as a 'diplomatic mission' by POTUS and SOS.
Benghazi was a CIA outpost with minor diplotmatic cover. And to this day, nobody has given a clear explanation of why the US ambassador would go to the shithole that was Benghazi at all, let alone urgently and on 9/11. To me, that matters a fuck lot more than whatever excuse the US admin. wants to use to cover up what was really going on.
^^hello, this
Seconded.
I've always thought and maybe others have expressed this as well. The reason the government did not send in rescue teams is because they were afraid if it failed it would look exactly like President Carters failed rescue of the hostages in Iran. That would have immediately lost President Obama the election just like the failed attempt was probably one of the larger reasons why President Carter lost. President Obama only needs to keep that bit of information hidden because if the people find out that that is why they made no attempt for a rescue in Bengazi then his history should be removed from all books forever and his name never spoken again. That is only a side bar to lying to the American people and to the U.N and to the Middle east about the true cause of the attack in the first place.
Just weeks before the election, the Obama Administration decided they'd rather blame the whole thing on something they couldn't have had any control over--like a fictional crowd of wild-eyed Muslims.
It's a disgrace either way. If they left Stevens to die because helping him might hurt Obama's reelection chances, then that's disgraceful. The Obama Administration's enthusiastic exploitation of bigotry against Muslims to win reelection is disgraceful, too.
Tossing the film-maker in the can for a year is another of that liar's accomplishments!
I would understand not sending in troops if they had no clue of what was going on, however you can always send troops and if the battle is over by the time you get there then you just go home or mop up. The crime is that Obama and his advisors being so cowardly about his re election chances that they choose to let people die rather than do their job and order people to do theirs and to cover up their cowardice they lie to the World about the cause. the reason I bring up the world is because blaming an American only gives terrorist fuel for their hatred, that is almost treasonous.
"Then Judicial Watch revealed the reply to its FOIA request of the White House, which included the Rhodes email, and a political firestorm broke loose."
So, when the House subpoenaed that same information, they didn't get the email--but Judicial Watch's FOIA request did produce the email?
Say whatever else you want about federal employees, they tend to be remarkably meticulous. Recognizing that fact is how GEICO became a powerhouse in the insurance business! Seems unlikely that someone just screwed up, there.
Seems to me that either someone representing the White House's political interests intervened in what was sent in response to the House's subpoena--but failed to intervene in Judicial Watch's FOIA request--or there's a Snowden type person in the White House, somewhere, who sent the email to Judicial Watch and managed to hide it from whomever intervened in the subpoena.
Either or both of those people should be identified. Follow that lead, either strand, and it should lead pretty close to the top.
Actually, with this administration, I could see the email being sent to Judicial Watch out of incompetence. Basically, someone forgot to redact the entire body of the email before sending it out.
The "funny" part is that person will most likely lose their job, while Clapper gets to keep his after blatantly lieing to COngress.
If Bengazi is a "fake scandal" because the Republicans pursuing it are hypocrites, then I guess Watergate was a fake scandal as well, since the Church Commission showed that the Johnson and Kennedy administrations were guilty of just as much or more wrong doing and abuse of power as the Nixon administration was.
The fact that Johnson and Kennedy were dirtbags and the Democrats who went after Nixon knew it and didn't care did not let and should not have let Nixon off the hook for what he did. No person making the "Republicans are hypocrites" talking point would think so. It is the same thing here. Like Nixon said, his enemies were dishonest and hated him and he gave them the sword they used to finally get him. The same thing is happening here to Obama and really more so Hilary. Do the Republicans hate Hilary and Obama and are totally motivated by politics here? Sure just like the Democrats on the Watergate Committee hated Nixon and were totally motivated by politics. But also just like Nixon, the motivations of their enemies doesn't change the fact that they, thanks to Hilary and Obama's incompetence, now have a sword and are right about this.
It's just political posturing. It's basically Shrike's whole life!
Bush did it too! Bush did it too!
As if that were somehow relevant.
That's how a lot of stupid people's minds work. Reality is a zero-sum game between Republicans and Democrats.
They are fanatics who will defend Obama no matter what. Obama assassinated two American citizens and these people still defend him. They have too much of their personal worth tied up in Obama to ever step away.
Reality is tempered by comparisons. What counts as a successful Middle East foreign policy? No attacks on diplomatic facilities? No dead Americans? Or is the bar a little lower? How do we set it? We do it by comparing what has been done in the past with what's going on now. It's the only way.
It's not that Bush did it too. It's that he did it 1,000 times worse or more. And none of these guys did anything but support him. You can't even articulate what the scandal is here. I can articulate Bush's: he sent thousands of Americans and countless more Iraqis to their deaths in order to prevent an attack with nonexistent nuclear weapons.
Nobody's saying that means all future presidents can get away with murder. But at least have the decency to accuse him of something real.

I seem to remember Nixon's apologists claiming the burglary was just 'politics as normal'; see Tony's sleazy dismissal below.
That is exactly what t hey claimed. Somehow, that didn't work very well.
Yes, even though it was largely true. Ever hear tell of LBJ's or JFK's election shenanigans or a lot of the other crap they pulled in office? But with a progressive media, Democrats and Progressives are always going to get the kid gloves treatment.
The comparison to Watergate is apt in a way, because what Republicans want to do is produce a scandal with consequences. Meaning the level of wrongdoing is almost completely unimportant (the cliche about the coverup being worse than the crime). They want to find some nugget of evidence that will harm Hillary Clinton politically. And by all appearances they're not going to stop until they find it or until their obsession starts to have negative political consequences for themselves.
I'm not even surprised anymore. I mean, yeah, I'm sure the families of the dead appreciate having their loved ones being dragged into a petty, shameful partisan witch hunt, but Republicans have done far worse and will in the future.
But unlike their ruthlessness, their stupidity is a little surprising. After exhaustive reviews and hearings and news reporting, it turns out that this incident was just another militant attack on US interests in the Middle East as has happened countless times. That Republicans are so insanely obsessed with this one only serves to indicate that Obama's foreign policy must be relatively successful.
Yes Tony, the Republicans would like some consequences. That is expected. The problem is that you and the other people trolling this site will do anything and defend anything to try and ensure that no Democratic scandal ever has consequences.
You are so fanatical that there is nothing Obama could do that would cause you to walk away and no longer defend him. We already knew that of course. You, however, seem to feel the need to confirm it daily.
Your defense of Obama would be a lot more credible if you did two things. First, bother to comment on a thread that doesn't involve you defending Obama and putting out his talking points. Second, actually criticize Obama once in a while and admit some of his numerous and undeniable failures. As it is, no one listens to or cares what you say because we all know it is always going to be defending Obama from the evil Republicans.
Walk away? That would take a lot, because the only alternative is to support Republicans, and they are at minimum one disastrous phony war, one global economic calamity, about a decade of anti-science mendacity on climate change, and half a century of overt racism and homophobia away from earning my trust in their abilities and motives.
But if you want something, fine, Obama shouldn't have sent more troops into Afghanistan. He shouldn't have bought into austerity talk. The NSA is way too aggressive under Obama. I'm disappointed to the extent that he could have been more resistant to corporate meddling in passing the healthcare law and others.
But I will not bend on this point: the problem in this country is not Obama, and it's not Democrats, it's Republicans, and it's been that way for a long, long time. You want me to walk away from Democrats then fix the fucking global embarrassment of a political party that is the GOP so I'll have somewhere to go.

John,
There NEVER was an argument. I posted a comment/opinion on this article indicating that the dead of the Libyan Incident were being used as pawns in a political smear campaign directed at discrediting Hillary Clinton. I pointed out that the politicians and media probably did not really give a damn about the Americans killed there because they were too busy and arrogant promoting their ideological agendas.
You immediately attacked my comment in an insulting manner. As a result, what followed was my attack on you. Had you responded to my original comment in a decent manner we may have been able to have had some halfway decent exchanges of opinion. Now of course that is impossible.
Regrettably, those of your ilk (like Sevo) apparently can't stand any comments that disagree in any way with your beliefs. So, you immediately denigrate and demonize those people, while using reverse (and cheap) psychology to further discredit them.
I posted a comment/opinion on this article indicating that the dead of the Libyan Incident were being used as pawns in a political smear campaign directed at discrediting Hillary Clinton.
It is only a "smear campaign" if it is not true. What here is not true? Was Clinton not Sec State when this happened? Is she not ultimately responsible for the failure to provide security to a ambassador that resulted in that ambassador's death? Did she not participate in the lying to cover this up? If not, then perhaps she should welcome and investigation to clear her name.
I pointed out that the politicians and media probably did not really give a damn about the Americans killed there because they were too busy and arrogant promoting their ideological agendas.
And I pointed out that that is an irrelevant point. Have you come up with any reason why that matters?
You immediately attacked my comment in an insulting manner.
Too bad. That doesn't make your points any better.
John,
I was wrong! At first I thought you were an abortion or afterbirth who lived. Now I realize that you are one of these rare miracles - a bowel movement who lived. You probably look like a human being. However, deep down and in reality you are just a pile of shit. Have a wonderful day ass chunk.

...."I posted a comment/opinion on this article indicating that the dead of the Libyan Incident were being used as pawns in a political smear campaign directed at discrediting Hillary Clinton."...
Yes, we noticed the misdirection instantly and called you on it.

"Most of the comments on this article have been made by two f***ing asshole morons - Sevo and John."
A few were made by several lying assholes, of which you figure greatly.
If you don't like being called on your bullshit, quite bullshitting.
Sevo,
You have a nice day. Nice posting with you ace. Good luck to you.
How sweet!
Sevo,
I figured you would enjoy that. Again, you still need to stick your index finger up your bung hole Hershey Highway. Then lick it to see how sweet it really is. F*** you, you piece of shit!
How sweet!
Fuck you.
Oh, my goodness! You learned a new word today?
Yes, widdle road guy, maybe tomorrow you can learn ANOTHER!
Won't that be exciting!
I stand corrected about Nixon. Based on that fact Benghazi becomes evn more prfoundly wrong than Watergate ever was.
It isn't that they don't want to know, it is that they don't want you to know.
I have seen people who actually did believe the WH and media explanation of the YouTube video. They are either idiots or blind partisans.
That brings up a larger point: the media did a horrible job on this one. They completely bought a total horseshit story and just went along with the WH talking points.
Is Susan Rice stupid enough to believe her own talking points? I admit some morbid curiosity to know that, even if it's obviously irrelevant. She got her promotion regardless
I'm sure they didn't "believe" the story, but they bought that it was a reasonable explanation that required no further investigation because the American people would buy what they were selling
Do you think the prosecutors who went after the idiot film producer believed it? Or were they just following orders to destroy some internet wacko for purely cynical political purposes.
He may not deserve your sympathy, but don't forget that our federal government not only had a handful of people killed at an inconvenient time, they also intentionally set out to destroy some nut-ball's life simply to provide a distraction until the election. And all over a constitutionally protected use of his free speech rights (to make and distribute a crappy film that nobody would have ever seen).
If anyone in that chain of command had any sense of morality or duty to country, they would have killed that initiative immediately. But nobody did. And the people at the highest levels all lined up behind a blatant violation of the first amendment.
But let's not harass them about that, OK?
The media did their job superbly which is to support the Democrats, whooping up anything they do that looks like success, hiding or rationalizing their failures, and trashing their opposition.
