Happy Loyalty Day!

Today the White House issued a Presidential Proclamation announcing "Loyalty Day."
From the proclamation:
On Loyalty Day, we renew our conviction to the principles of liberty, equality, and justice under the law. We accept our responsibilities to one another. And we remember that our differences pale in comparison to the strength of the bonds that hold together the most diverse Nation on earth.
In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America and pay tribute to the heritage of American freedom.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2014, as Loyalty Day. This Loyalty Day, I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance, whether by displaying the flag of the United States or pledging allegiance to the Republic for which it stands.
Well, that's not creepy at all, is it?
This is not something President Barack Obama has come up with. Loyalty Day was first recognized in 1921 as a way to counter May Day, the day when lefties celebrate International Workers' Day (which Cato's Ilya Somin has sensibly suggested be renamed "Victims of Communism Day"). However, it was first officially recognized under the Eisenhower administration in 1958. Interestingly, it doesn't look like President Nixon ever signed a Loyalty Day proclamation.
The sort of suggested displays of patriotism mentioned in today's proclamation weren't justified during the Red Scares and they certainly are not justified now. I am still trying to get over the fact that it is considered normal in the U.S. for school children to pledge allegiance to the flag every day and for every sporting event to be preceded by the singing of the national anthem. Can't we assume everyone is a patriot until there is evidence to the contrary?

Can't we assume everyone is a patriot until there is evidence to the contrary?
Apparently not -- some subversives even question why we sing the National Anthem at sporting events!
First, I'd need a definition of "patriot". I'm guessing I wouldn't meet the criteria.
It makes sense at the Olympics or some other international competition...
... and in international poetry-reading contests.
And some fools think that's unusual or peculiar to the US.
Wasn't the Pledge originally written by a commie? Loyalty Day is just the Orwellian term for May Day in America. There's exactly no difference between the concepts.
Wasn't the Pledge originally written by a commie?
From hier:
It was, but the senate fixed that by adding the phrase "Under God" to it, because no godless commie can swear a loyalty oath that says the state is being squatted over by a divine being.
Barfman, why have you forsaken us in our time of greatest need?
He is not loyal to H&R?!
Didn't Jesus say that when he was on the cross?
*projectile vomits*
.....No thanks.
On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America and pay tribute to the heritage of American freedom.
By submitting unquestionably to the will and whims of state agents.

"Captured"?
I think a great example of leftist cognitive dissonance is their attitudes towards racism and communism. By any objective standard, communism killed and oppressed far more people in the 20th century than racism ever did, even if you include the Holocaust on the racism side. And yet to be anti-communist is thought to be bizarre and evidence of low intellect. Only nuts care that communists teach in universities across the country. But racism, OMG, someone said something racist! They must lose their job immediately! Everyone must be protected from those dangerous ideas!
About what I'd expect from a...RAAAAACIST!
*points, in horror, wide-eyed, at PapayaSF*
Artist's rendition.
Last year I was defriended an Facebook by a yellow-dog Democrat for "racism." The topic was those two black teens who killed a random white guy in Oklahoma. People were saying it was "senseless" and "incomprehensible." I pointed out that it looked quite comprehensible, because both the accused were wannabe rappers and aspiring gang members, and it wasn't unknown for such people to commit violent crimes for "street cred" or for gang initiation.
That was deemed "racist."
You vile being! Begone from this realm!
Duh... communists CARE.
Who ever said that racism and communism are mutually exclusive?
The Red Chinese fucking hate the Tibetans, merely because they are Tibetans. And prejudice against Afro-Cubans has thrived under the communist regime.
I wasn't aware that there were enough Afro-Cubans in Red China for that to be a problem. /jk
I know that you meant that it was the Castro regime harshing on the A-Cs.
Actually, during the Maoist years, China would make a big deal out of sponsoring Africans from communist countries, especially Somalians as they were on their side of the Sino-Soviet split, to study at Chinese universities in the name of Communist solidarity!
The exchange students were often treated horribly.
I thought the Chinese generally disdained everyone that isn't Chinese. Seems popular in a lot of Asian cultures, really.
The surprise isn't Han chauvinism, it's that it was so strong that even Mao couldn't uproot it by killing a bunch of poor bastards.
Which completely explains why he forcibly settled Han Chinese in Western China to displace the natives.
Not.
What do you mean? Surely with your extensive knowledge of SE Asia, you're aware how much the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Cambodians love each other.
Heh. "Better to eat French shit for 100 years, than Chinese shit for 1,000" And only if our Intelligence services had truly understood Ho Chi Minh's quote, we could have been spared so much pain.
Im not sure I understand it.
If that was his attitude, why work with the Chinese to kick the French out?
Ah, the full quote provides the context:
And don't we all know that, in his heart, Obama would rather be celebrating May Day?
Maybe Chocolate Nixon intends on prosecuting the criminals in his administration and then resigning for trampling half a dozen enumerated rights.
" Chocolate Nixon" You win the internet!!
I'm still trying to figure out what Obama does that isn't creepy when he isn't doing something mendacious.
I'm still trying to figure out when Obama isn't doing something mendacious.
Can't we assume everyone is a patriot until there is evidence to the contrary?
No.
Now, please genuflect before the state...ve haff veys of making you genuflect, Matthew....
In honor of America's ruling families it should become "royalty day".
*opens beer*
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!!
American ruling families are more like mafioso than royalty.
May Day? Loyalty Day? This is the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker -

You're both wrong. International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day.
I don't understand. There are no round and juicy posteriors in that video. Are you feeling well?
All that squatting to plant sunflowers builds up the gluteus maximus.
Can't we assume everyone is a patriot until there is evidence to the contrary?
I'll tell you right now that there is no definition of patriotism that I qualify for.
Hugh describes what he feels as "hateriotism".
That's fucking awesome and I'm stealing it. Thank you.
And I salute you every day, Epi.
A single finger salute, amirite?
Well I have two hands.
Ah, the parting of the cheeks.
Angriots Unite!
HATRIOT
You know, I was going to make fun of these dudes for their silly name, but the lyrics just made me a gigantic fan.
Although they could be sarcastic. In which case, fuck them.
From an interview with the singer:
Phew. This concludes my public research into this topic that I'm sure no one here but me cares about.
I think the US is still by far the best country on Earth (even if it could be better in soooo many ways and we're better off just blasting off to start our own country in space [with hookers and blackjack]). Also I would be willing to join the military to defend the US if it was invaded.
Does that count?
Also I would be willing to join the military to defend the US if it was invaded.
Hmmm...
I am not so sure about me.
I think i would anonymously encourage many of my local scum bag politicians and bureaucrats to resist, then rat them out to the occupation forces.
Or hell just rat them out with lies if they don't resist...
Or just kill them in their beds during the chaos.
Probably depends on the nature of the invasion more then anything.
Loyalty day?? This has to be from the onion. "On Loyalty Day, we renew our conviction to the principles of liberty"
Liberty:
freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control.
freedom from external or foreign rule; independence.
freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice.
So how soon will they be dismantling the government and setting everyone free?
Freedom means asking permission and obeying orders.
In a state of liberty, who gives permission? Who issues orders?
How can anyone do anything with no one giving permission and issuing orders?
It would be chaos! Anarchy! Somalia!!11!1!ONE!!ROADS!11!
Oh snapage!!!!! I forgot about ROADZ!!!! AnD Somalania!!!!! Who else would give me cash for my clunker, and build secretive special bunkers....for our dear leaders!!!!!
To be fair, in 1921 there was a great ideological/political/military conflict between the world's first Communist state, which announced the purpose of revolutionizing the world with the assistance of comrades in all countries, and America, which was much freer then than now. Communism actually had supporters, and people had to decide whether they liked it or not.
Though I am not fully comfortable with some of the ceremonies marking the occasion.
Communism still has supporters. Many teach in our universities.
That's because KKKapitalist Failyurrr!!11
On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America...
Nah...
My only loyalty is to the highest alt-text bidder.
JINX!!!!
I'd settle for a hat-tip just once in my commenting career.
Matthew, how about a little loyalty to the Alt Text, huh?
*assuming it's not my shitty browser or computer, since I'm at work fucking off and not being a loyal employee...
Strange, I don't feel loyal...
"On Loyalty Day, we renew our conviction to the principles of liberty, equality, and justice under the law."
If you promote the principles of liberty, equality, and justice OUTSIDE the law, then we've got a nice cell already made for you.
You know who else put a high value on loyalty....
Commander Shepherd?
That's why he has six favorite stores in the galaxy.
Yudhisthira.
Lorena Bobbit?
The 12 Disciples?
*all* of them?
Well, the 11 disciples.
That's too many - Mark 14:50
That blacksmith from Falkreath?
I think that was more of a "don't ask don't tell" thing than a loyalty thing.
Stalin?
Lassie?
Benji?
Mr. Eddie's Father?
Could it be, I don't know, SAAAAATINNNNNNNNNNNNNN??
Tyler Durden?
Interestingly, it doesn't look like President Nixon ever signed a Loyalty Day proclamation.
COMMUNIST!!!!!
On Loyalty Day, we renew our conviction to the principles of liberty, equality, and justice under the law.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... HAHAHAHAHAHahahahaa... ehhhh
Good one.
The extent to which Aerica is a nation worthy of loyalty and patriotism is the extent to which loyalty days and loyalty oaths are a violation of it's national principles.
Well said.
+ Catch 22
I'm OK with Workers' Day. Yes, it has communist origins and Marxist connotations, but I'd rather celebrate labor than government.
Well i understand what you mean with the symbolism of it all...
But where the rubber meets the road the supporters of May Day really do not see the difference between the two and their vision of government tends to be the worse possible kind.
So Obumbles declares May Day as Loyalty Day, and his fellators, like shreek and tiny will still declare that he is not a pinko. How fucking creepy.
" ...let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America and pay tribute.."
How about you go fuck yourself instead?
I'm all in favor of the pledge being recited daily. Partly because of my unabashed enthusiasm for America. (Unabashed but often bashed up. Particularly by reality) And partly because the pledge is the only time public schools ever refer to America as a republic and not as a democracy.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
*Takes breath*
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, shit...that's a good one.
Look up.
Great minds.
Lions and tigers and bears oh my, if it weren't for the government we'd have crappy roadz, and unlicensed doctors trying to stick a needle in someone's eye!!! And there would be people trying to make an unregulated cherry pie!!!!!!! No taxes!!!??? Oh no, all the children will die!!!!!
Oh, and you think just anyone should be able to make a pie and sell it? Is that what you think?
Yeah that's what I think! You're just a big meanie who is jealous about us folks without a pulse. You want to restrict pie selling to government licensed people with a pulse only.
Well, what the heck.,.according to Google Maps, the north end of McMicken Ave. has been lost entirely, resulting in an incongruity between Street View and overhead. Apparently since the camera car went thru, a purple house on the last corner and a Jiffy Lube on the Central Pkwy. a block W of there were demolished to make way for a Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., using what looks according to Street View to have been part of McMicken Ave. They seem to have taken down links to any Street View photos north of there on the old route, although they do go a couple frames N of the corner.
Hey, how did...! And I used to wonder how other people's comments got into the wrong thread.
There needs to be a war on squirrels. Those furry bastards had us fooled! Oh, and the mother effing rent is too damn high!!!!
Let me guess: Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. is the violentest street in town, right?
I am still trying to get over the fact that it is considered normal in the U.S. for school children to pledge allegiance to the flag every day and for every sporting event to be preceded by the singing of the national anthem.
Considering the UK's penchant for soccer riots, often as a result of nationalist rivalries on display during the playing of national anthems, which, it may be worth pointing out, involves invoking god's blessing on your fucking matriarch... yes, please lecture us on our peculiar American nationalistic customs.
I'm already forced at the point of a gun to pay tribute every two weeks from my paycheck.
Time to bring back the Roman (Bellamy) salute...
Haven't really traveled much, have you?

Honest to God, kids, Google Is Your Friend.
Loyalty is earned - not born into. That being said, I'm in favor of patriot day, but I imagine that would be hated by the left.
