Lawmakers from Hawaii, Alaska Put Pressure on Feds to Reconsider Jones Act
Back in May 2013, Reason TV brought you the story of how protectionist shipping laws created under the Jones Act were damaging the Hawaiian economy. Now, lawmakers from Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Guam are putting pressure on the U.S. government to mend the maritime law.
Passed in 1920, the Jones Act was created to protect the U.S. shipping industry by mandating that only ships made in the U.S. and flying the American flag can deliver goods between American ports. This means that a ship from China can only make one stop in the U.S. at a time – it would be unable to unload goods in Hawaii on the way back from Los Angeles.
The law has negatively impacted the Hawaiian economy and now lawmakers are fighting back.
To learn more about the Jones Act, watch "How Protectionism Hurts Hawaii: Why It's Time to Repeal the Jones Act," produced by Zach Weissmueller.
About 4 minutes. Original release date was May 2, 2013 and original writeup is below.
"What would an enemy want to do to the people of Hawaii during war time?" asks Ken Schoolland, professor of economics at Hawaii Pacific University and scholar at the Grassroot Institute. "They would want to cut us off from international shipping. Well, this is what the law does to us all the time."
Reason TV sat down with Schoolland to talk about the Jones Act, federal legislation that restricts non-US shipping vessels from engaging in commerce in domestic shipping lanes. Schoolland argues that this protectionist measure is crippling the Hawaiian economy.
Attorney John Carroll petitioned to overturn the Jones Act, but the petition was dismissed by the court with prejudice. Carroll says he intends to mount a vigorous appeal.
About 4 minutes.

Anyone who opposes Free Trade opposes the Free Market.
Anyone who opposes the Free Market opposes Humanity.
Anyone who opposes Humanity is like "you-know-who".
Therefore, logically, the Neo-Mercantilists are the same as HitlerStalin.
Bush?
Bushitlerstalin
What's so irritating is that so many people equate the Bush version of gov't-managed trade with free trade, and then blame the latter for the problems of the former.
The Jones Act doesn't just affect Hawaii. Alaska has MASSIVE amounts of natural gas that should be exploited, natural gas that could lower prices everywhere along the Pacific Coast if they could cut through the BS and drill for it. If you wind down the Jones Act, it becomes more economical to ship that gas wherever it is needed, Japan, China, or California- something that could lead to a less localized market for NG, and lower prices for everyone.
More concisely, the Jones Act is crony capitalism at its finest.
Passed in 1920, the Jones Act
We're wiser than those "roaring flappers" or whatever they called themselves.
In these days of rapidly-changing modern times, we realize that every law should automatically expire after five, or even two, years.
Congress should be required to eliminate three existing laws for every new law it passes.
In a way, isn't that the rationale behind a 2-year term for Reps?
You make a compelling argument.
We should have two-year terms for Presidents, Senators, Federal Judges, and anyone who works for a Federal Bureau.
Henry George was indirectly responsible for the invention of the board game Monopoly?

Fred Phelps about to meet his Maker.
Noted SoCon Bryan Fischer, via Facebook:
"Contra Fred Phelps: God does not hate homosexuals. Loves them enough to tell them the truth and to send his Son to die for them."
So what is the Socon party line on that anyway? If God creates people and their souls and such and he created them gay and then damns them for behaving the way they were created isn't he kind of a prick?
I mean, I'm sure they've worked it out some way that God is in the clear here, but I admit I'm ignorant of the tortured logic they use to arrive at that conclusion.
Well, God created sexuality for a particular purpose, to be enjoyed within particular boundaries (Genesis 2). Homosexuality does not comport with that original plan. Nor does polygamy, adultery, fornication, divorce, or onanism.
The hysteria over homosexuality (from what I can see) is the perceived effort to create a new protected class, with the eventual result that preachers are arrested in front of their congregations for teaching that homosexuality is a sin.
SoCon preachers are just as strident about condemning adulterery and divorce, but those issues are outside the political realm, except perhaps as politial ammunition against particular candidates during election cycles.
Sorry. Adulterererey
I wouldn't say that they're "just as strident about condemning adultery and divorce." The vast majority of churches will accept openly divorced people as members, and many preachers will perform marriage ceremonies even if one or both of the people being married was previously divorced. (I know things are a little more complicated in the Catholic church, so for the sake of this argument I'm referring mainly protestant churches.)
The vast majority of churches will accept openly divorced people as members, and many preachers will perform marriage ceremonies even if one or both of the people being married was previously divorced.
Those people you mention? !=True Scotsmen
"The hysteria over homosexuality (from what I can see) is the perceived effort to create a new protected class, with the eventual result that preachers are arrested in front of their congregations for teaching that homosexuality is a sin."
The victim narrative leaves out quite a bit of relevant information.
"I mean, I'm sure they've worked it out some way that God is in the clear here"
Well I'm an atheist but my understanding is that while homesexuality is supposedly a sin, that everyone gay or straight is a sinner but God loves everyone anyways because he's awesome like that. Kind of like premarriatal sex is a sin but everbody does it anyways. That's why they always say, hate the sin, love the sinner. Not that I have any patience for those arguments, that's just how I understand it to be presented in "mainstream" churches as opposed to places like westboro who seems to be overly infactuated with butt sex.
I've heard some say that sexuality is a choice, and gay people choose to be gay.
Of course, that would mean that God creates everyone as a bisexual, but they usually don't take that line of thinking to its logical end.
That seems to be the only thing that squares with what cav writes above.
Or someone way back when got mixed up while playing whisper-down-the-alley with the divine, but that's blasphemy, I suppose.
You have to remember that for most of the intellectual history of the West, there was no such concept as "heterosexuality" or "homosexuality". Indeed, these terms were coined in the 19th century by the first psychologists. Before that, what people talked about were homosexual acts, and this is the context in which the Biblical prohibition of homosexual acts were written.
Mormons actually teach that people are born gay and don't choose to have same-sex attractions. They maintain that it can be 'corrected' and is not sinful as long as individuals refrain from engaging in homosexual acts.
How many protesters are going to show up a his funeral?
Why would anyone give him that honor?
How many protesters revellers are going to show up a his funeral?
Possibly more apt.
I hope a ton of gay people show up, shouting "God hates Phelps!"
Now that's the sort of protest I could really get behind.
Tempting, isn't it?
Why bother? Have your friends over for a BBQ instead. Spring is here and the jasmine and redbuds are blooming.

Oh, and I spent all day last friday at the Forest Hill nursery festival eating delicious boudin balls and following the wife around while she bought flowers. I have no use for flowers. If it doesn't feed me, I don't feed it. Still, one must keep the wife happy.
"Lies! The Spring Equinox is March 20th."
I could look it up, but I'll bet you have it; what time?
March Equinox: March 20, 2014, 16:57 UTC

Ooops.
MINUS, not plus! Hey, you could cook your CB&C!
I spent yesterday cleaning the yard. It is spring here. Having a giant old live oak is awesome most of the time. Unless you have to take down a good-sized limb and clean up all the leaves it left since the fall. I'll be manually splitting that wood for a good long time. An 18" diameter chunk just laughed at me when I hit it with the maul. I understand why they built the original six frigates of the US navy out of that wood.
Spring in FL?
Spring in FL?
Spring in FL is a myth, cooked up by the FL chamber of commerce to bait tourists. In all actuality, there is only two seasons in FL, sweltering summer (11 & 2 weeks months. alive/green).. and brisk fall (2 weeks in late Jan/ early Feb. dead/brown) The arrival of the love bugs herald the changing of the seasons...

Isn't this the same law that was keeping needed road salt from Main from being delivered to New Jersey a month back?
I think it was. I first heard about this law a little over a year ago when a friend was telling me how it limits Hawaiian cruise options.
I heard some hack on NPR this week justifying this law with for the same old, tired saw of national security. Evidently we live forever on the brink of all out naval warfare with our domestic ship-building industry our only hope for victory.
"I think it was. I first heard about this law a little over a year ago when a friend was telling me how it limits Hawaiian cruise options."
Pretty sure that's a different law aimed at labor 'protection' (seamen).
..."This form of discrimination has been around since the early 1900s, borne out of the Passenger Service Act of 1886, a law forbidding foreign-flagged vessels from transporting passengers on one-way trips between ports in the United States. This law, intended to help the U.S. shipbuilding industry, proved to actually work against it. Registering a ship in the United States requires the ship to be built in the United States and staffed with an American crew. However, paying American wages and complying with U.S. employment regulations is extremely expensive compared to using employees from developing countries,"...

Ah. It's supposed to be sans the "e". I'm learning!
Since you mentioned Hawaii, Magnum P.I. or Hawaii Five-0?

Book 'im, Danno.
The orig with Jack Lord was the SHIT. But mostly, I always enjoyed the credits - "Kam Fong as Chin Ho". "Why'd they even give him a stage name??!"
"Magnum Puss-I"? PuhLeaze.
"Magnum Puss-I"? PuhLeaze.
Ask this guy if Magnum was a pussy.
THAT, is, by far, the best scene in the entire series.
And I loved that show.
I'm told that episode crossed a line by having the protagonist execute a man in cold blood.
The fact that he deserved still didn't change the fact that before that episode you wouldn't see the 'good guy' kill an unarmed man like that.
I must admit, I was shocked.
But Ivan deserved it, was guilty, and would have walked.
One of the reasons Magnum and Miami Vice were so good is that they were willing to break those conventions, because those conventions pretty much prevented any show from being particularly gritty or dark. You can thank Donald Bellisario and Michael Mann for the way TV evolved from shit to being better than most movies (at least on cable). Especially Mann. Miami Vice was groundbreaking in so many ways.
"Maybe you won't even twitch."
You forgot the groundbreaking bestiality scene in Manimal.
We get enough of that from Warty here.
Yup - popped a guy in the head with a Bren Ten and he didn't twitch. Back in that era I only had disucssions about this sort of thing with other veterans. Most civies would have walked away thinking we were verified psychos.
Both of the programs were some of the first to show characters who were vietnam vets in a good light. Even the A-Team were portrayed as fugitive felons.
Yeah, since my dad is a Vietnam vet I was somewhat sensitive to their portrayal on the TV (and in movies; I remember walking out of Platoon with him and he was pissed about so many of them being all made to look like psychos), so I noticed that as well. Also, Miami Vice was just flat up awesome because they took the show seriously. Michael Mann was super anal about trying to get the actors to handle their guns properly (not that it always worked) and other gun stuff on the show, like this (Mann brought in that guy, who is an actual fast draw specialist, to do it right).
"Book 'im, Danno."
Wasn't that Hill Street Blues?
Uh, fuck NO!

Dano was also the star of the Williamsburg orientation film.
Er, not Dano; Steve McGarrett.
For the ladies (and Jesse), you can see Dano half-naked through most of Spencer's Mountain, the original version of The Waltons.
Earl Hamner, who wrote the original Waltons book, is still alive at 90 and still married to his wife of 59 years.
Mercy
A dog that mauled a 4-year-old Phoenix boy has received thousands of pleas for mercy through a Facebook campaign ahead of a court hearing to decide his fate.
A municipal court judge could rule at a March 25 hearing on whether Mickey, a pit bull that bit Kevin Vicente in the face, should be euthanized. Kevin received injuries that will require, according to doctors, months and possibly years of reconstructive surgeries.
------------
"This is not Kevin versus Mickey," said attorney John Schill, who is representing the dog in the court petition. "Having Mickey killed is not going to take away Kevin's pain or injuries. The only thing this is going to do is kill a poor, innocent dog."
They should definitely horsewhip the owner, after they put the poor innocent dog down. For equality's sake.
"They should definitely horsewhip the owner,"
I'd suggest that whatever they do surgically to Kevin's face, they do the opposite to the owners' face.
Well, if Kevin were my son, I would work out a deal to leave Mickey alive if Mickey's owner paid the full cost of Kevin's reconstructive surgery, which is necessary because the boy can't swallow properly or open one eye.
Really, though, I scorn Mickey's owner for not having the moral courage to do what's necessary.

Dumbest gun control article ever.
http://seattletimes.com/html/l.....gsxml.html
It's so dumb... it's so dumb, there's no one thing I can blockquote here to illustrate its stupidity. It's that dumb.
I'll take your word for it then. Though that is a stiff competition.
I'm going in. If you don't hear from me in half an hour, call 911. They'll find me in my bathroom with slit wrists.
Did the fellow in the opening story--a U.S. Marine--hurt his friend because the gun seller failed to perform a background check on him, then?
Also, " Many victims are quite familiar with firearms. The casualty list includes cops, soldiers and veterans."
Hmmm...
"Only the police should have guns, even though I just claimed they frequently shoot themselves."
Holy fuck. They say shooting accidents 'soar' and the number of shooting accidents in the state of Washington is...122. In 2006 they had 106 and in 2004 they had 109. In other words, shooting accidents soaring equates to an increase of 13 people in the last decade.
The humanity.
Washington State has a population of 6.9 million. 122/6.9 million=.000018=.0018%.
The 2/100ths percent chance you may accidentally be shot is clearly a reason to worry, especially given that only 7 resulted in fatalities.
Two-thousandths, actually
Also, Washington's population has increased since then. It increased by almost 800,000 from 2000 to 2010 (don't have the figure for 2004), which was an increase of about 13%.
So have the number of guns... exponentially, according to the article. The number of accidental shootings compared with the number of guns is going down.
Dude, I did the math just like you. Did you notice the other centrifuge-purified retard? That gun DEATHS from accidental discharges have dropped by 30% since 2006? Jesus that article was fucking Jr. High level school newspaper stupid.
Less than 2 shootings per 100,000, and SOMETHINGS MUST BE DUNZ!

Conservatives define facts as whatever makes them feel comfortable without having to think, and bolsters certainty in their "us versus them" authoritarian mindset.
Wait, I spoke too soon. Any Raw Story article about anti-vaccination, anti-GMO Bill Maher mocking the GOP as anti-science will bring out the smug:

It's all propaganda-driven faux victimization, centered on Christian extremists.
Astounding. But by calling them out on GMO paranoia I've probably kicked up a hornet's nest.

What the fuck? If you're going to call others stupid, you should be able to construct a sentence.
Dumbest gun control article ever.
Bad things happen to random people; individually, they probably all could have been prevented by the judicious application of good sense.
There oughtta be a law! Because if there's any way to get people to behave sensibly, it's passing another law magic spell.
If you notice from the first example given of a gun 'accident', a guy pointed a gun at his friend and pulled the trigger without checking to see if it was loaded.
Never, ever, fucking ever, under any circumstances point a gun at a person unless you intend to kill them. Ever. Always be mindful of where the gun is pointed. By mindful I don't mean vaguely aware. I mean have it at the forefront of your mind constantly.
Dry firing a gun in a house with other people present is probably not very wise either. Let the hammer down with your thumb.
"...all could have been prevented by the judicious application of good sense."
Yes. That is kind of an understatement really. A new law isn't going to fix any of that.
Gun grabbers are compulsive liars. Everything they say with regards to this debate is a deception of some kind. They don't give a shit about gun accidents, crime, or anyone's safety. They just want you disarmed and helpless.
Gun grabbers are compulsive liars. Everything they say with regards to this debate is a deception of some kind. They don't give a shit about gun accidents, crime, or anyone's safety. They just want you disarmed and helpless.
This. They are so dishonest and evasive when you press them about the practical aspects of their proposed laws.
Consider their desire for mandatory safe-storage laws. Laws like those would only be enforceable AFTER an accident happens because there would be no way to enforce it without home inspections by police.
When I ask them if they want warrantless searches of the homes of gun owners they get quiet or evasive.
Or consider their proposals for mandatory gun safety and education classes. If I ask them why that should apply to your right to bear arms and not their right vote also, they get quiet or evasive.
Simply put, there is zero consistency or thought in their ideas beyond "guns are bad!". It's pure emotional, fear-based thinking compounded by class and political resentment.
As much as Tulpa has lied, he was at least honest on this point. He is totally fine with random inspections of your gun storage.
When I ask them if they want warrantless searches of the homes of gun owners they get quiet or evasive.
What they actually want is warrantless intrusions of anyone's home on any pretext at all, and the reason they hate guns is that they don't want any of the SWAT team thugs to get what's coming to them.

My wife likes Sci-Fi, Fantasy, etc.
She watches tons of it on TV. It seems like every time I turn my attention briefly to the television I notice that all of the actors are Pommys. What is with that? Are they all fleeing Limeyland because it has descended into an authoritarian shithole?
British accents make the fantasy more realistic.

Wayne Knight is NOT dead
After a hoax report that Wayne Knight had died in a traffic accident near the New York?Pennsylvania border, the actor who played Newman on "Seinfeld" and a treacherous techie in "Jurassic Park" took humorously to his Twitter account to dispel the rumors of his sudden demise.
"Some of you will be glad to hear this, others strangely disappointed ? but I am alive and well!" tweeted Knight, 58, taking a wry view of some folks' tendency to confuse him with the characters he has played.
Packed houses cringed ? and possibly cheered ? when Knight bought it in "Jurassic Park," the victim of a hungry young Dilophosaurus that blinded him with venom, then delivered the coup de gr?ce in the Jeep that Knight's character, Dennis Nedry, was using to escape.
But Knight, who went on to further fame as Jerry Seinfeld's nemesis "Newman" on "Seinfeld," learned Sunday that not all folks hold his roles against him. After the death hoax circulated on Facebook and other corners of the social media universe, Knight followed his initial tweet with a more heartfelt thanks to those who had expressed grief online.
"Thanks for all the love, everybody. I didn't know you cared. Glad to be breathing!" he typed, along with another humorous observation: "Does someone have to DIE to trend? Geez!"
I believe that Seinfeld was one of the best shows ever. It makes me miss the Nineties.

8 Shocking Instances of Moronic Right-Wing Malevolence This Week
'Poor people just love sitting around being poor' ... and more.
blah blah blah blahbety blah!
Shocking, huh? Seems about par for the course, as far as I can see. What did they have in their article relating the 8 instances of moronic left-wing malevolence?
Oh, were there too many instances to choose just 8?
There are kooky people spread over the entire political spectrum. Pointing to those whackos is a good way to ignore any problems underlying one's own political philosophy. This seems like the left's favorite tactic.

Presumably not our Dunphy, but the article is exactly what you would expect. The comments, not so much. For a right-wing site, there are a surprising number of comments there in protest of police abuse. Good to see. I guess Dunphyism is going out of style.
I particularly like the one that says "Dunphy never met a police shooting he didn't like".

For a right-wing site, there are a surprising number of comments there in protest of police abuse.
The police are losing their traditional constituencies. The police have one constituency left: the police.
Our favorite fascist midget puts on a clinic for the use of red herrings: The Myth That You Are Paid What You Are Worth
It's often assumed that people are paid what they're worth. According to this logic, minimum wage workers aren't worth more than the $7.25 an hour they now receive. If they were worth more, they'd earn more. Any attempt to force employers to pay them more will only kill jobs.
According to this same logic, CEOs of big companies are worth their giant compensation packages, now averaging 300 times pay of the typical American worker. They must be worth it or they wouldn't be paid this much.
"Paid-what-you're-worth" is a dangerous myth.
So:
1. The capitalists claim that workers are paid wages according to what the market will bear.
2. But some CEOs make large amounts of money...
3. Therefore statement one is FALSE! Lose your chains, comrades!
Some people aren't even worth the minimum wage.
To be fair, a lot of executives aren't worth their salaries either. Unfortunately, that's the board's/stockholders' problem.
I was actually thinking of CEOs when I wrote that.
Fifty years ago, when General Motors was the largest employer in America, the typical GM worker got paid $35 an hour in today's dollars. Today, America's largest employer is Walmart, and the typical Walmart workers earns $8.80 an hour.
Does this mean the typical GM employee a half-century ago was worth four times what today's typical Walmart employee is worth? Not at all. Yes, that GM worker helped produce cars rather than retail sales. But he wasn't much better educated or even that much more productive. He often hadn't graduated from high school. And he worked on a slow-moving assembly line. Today's Walmart worker is surrounded by digital gadgets ? mobile inventory controls, instant checkout devices, retail search engines ? making them quite productive.
Which would suggest GM workers were actually overpaid. And look how that turned out once real competition came from overseas.
Also the Wal-Mart employee didn't actually create or arrange for all those fancy prodcuts to come in.
The real difference is the GM worker a half-century ago had a strong union behind him that summoned the collective bargaining power of all autoworkers to get a substantial share of company revenues for its members. And because more than a third of workers across America belonged to a labor union, the bargains those unions struck with employers raised the wages and benefits of non-unionized workers as well.
And look how racist and sexist the workforce was back then.
"Fifty years ago, when General Motors was the largest employer in America, the typical GM worker got paid $35 an hour in today's dollars. Today, America's largest employer is Walmart, and the typical Walmart workers earns $8.80 an hour."
And you'll notice the GM would be out of business as a result, except for Obo's outright theft of the bond-holder's value.
And you'll also notice that there are very few humans building cars these days.

Union polls some people (who?), finds they think everybody should make more money! I doubt the questions included the likely costs:
"Thumbs-up for $15-an-hour minimum wage in new S.F. poll"
[...]
"One reason, according to the poll, is because skyrocketing housing costs are reshaping the city's face"...
Of course, 'rent control', gov't-supported NIMBYs and 'prevailing wage' laws have nothing to do with the housing costs.
http://www.sfgate.com/politics.....321206.php
The lefty comments are all of the 'it won't cost anything' variety; FREE MONEY!
"..everybody should make more money..."
Because the value of the dollar is fixed and this would make everyone rich.
These people really do not understand what money is.
And the cost of housing will remain stable as the M/W earners make all this new dough! Or, uh, well...
It's even dumber than that. I saw Michael Moore make a similar claim when he said 'Ford workers in the early 1900s were paid $15/hr and Walmart workers are paid less than that!'
The problem is, it's a different industry. The amount car workers are paid has increased substantially over that period of time. If you want to compare apples to apples, and leftists don't because apples to apples comparisons prove them wrong, you would have to compare car workers then to car workers now and retail workers then and now.
The point about 'largest employer' is also moronic. Retail in the mid-1900s was primarily done by mom and pop shops. Big box retailers are relatively new. How much does Robert Reich seriously think some southern mom and pop store in the boonies paid the guy who stocked their shelves? I'm willing to bet it was quite a bit lower than that employee is currently getting at Wal-Mart.
Furthermore, if Robert Reich is so worried about the amount of money made by American wage slaves, he should be constantly advocating for the abolition of the gas tax and the sales tax, as these taxes take a disproportionately high percentage of a poor person's income.
It's bizarre that the Friend of the Poor isn't arguing in favor of removing onerous taxes that destroy the take home pay of poor folk. It's almost like his primary goal is the expansion of state power completely without regard for consequences.
People would be earning, on average, higher real wages, were it not for the anti-free market policies that this guy probably advocates.
Oh; it's Robert Reich.
To build on what I said a couple of posts ago, the variety and quantity of goods and services available for purchase have dramatically expanded in the last half-century. I'm too lazy and distracted to do the research at the moment, but a comparison of the cost of basic goods in terms of hours worked would be an interesting study.
Also, Reich seems to have forgotten that the price for labor is set in the same way as any other good or service. Government intervention in the process creates unnecessary shortages and surpluses.
"Also, Reich seems to have forgotten that the price for labor is set in the same way as any other good or service."
You're too kind.
Reich knows that, but he plays to his audience as if labor were not really an economic good; rank special pleading.
Every lefty does the same regarding the good in question. Medical care is somehow exempt from the rules of econ, 'cause stuff! Etc.
http://cafehayek.com/
This guy has some posts comparing the number of hours needed to work to buy a comparable set of goods today and earlier time periods. And points out that there are tons of goods available to the average person today which either simply weren't available in past eras or whose closest analogues were so expensive they were only luxuries for the super-rich.
How many hours did you have to work in 1980 to buy a flatscreen TV or a cell phone or high-speed internet?
You could buy a nice used 1964 Jaguar XKE for $4k in 1980.
They were so cheap in the late '70s drunks used them to break up Klan rallies
(Video exists of this incident)
As a kid in the 70's I dreamed that one day I would be wealthy enough to afford to have the equipment to watch any movie I wanted to see when I wanted to see it. In that era I was thinking about a private home theater room with a projector - I had no idea where I could purchase the films I wanted though.
I have a few DVD's which I purchased just for nostalgia's sake - the short list of movies I had dreamed of 40+ years ago.
Worth. I don't think that word means what he thinks it means.
See, the problem here is that no-one outside the left say that you're paid what you're worth. And the left only says that to have a strawman to fight.
We say that you are paid based on the *value you add*.
That's why a GM worker from 50 years ago, with not 'much better' education (which is actually irrelevant. Ask a Starbucks barista how much 'education' she needed to be able to do that job) - because that *individual* worker added a lot more value to GM's end-product than does the guy that will be stocking the shelves tonight at Walmart.
I should also add;
In addition to being paid based on the value you add, you are also paid based on your *power* to capture that value for yourself.
In other words - if there are 500 people competing for each opening in a job, no matter how much value a worker can add, they have a limited ability to capture it. Others will be able to underbid them in an effort to capture *any* value.
Yet the people who complain about employers using their power to force wages down never complain when a shortage of labor allows employees to bid it up (well unless they're senior executives).
Whenever leftards like Reich get all huffy about what other people are paid, I point out that as an employer, I pay what the JOB is worth. You can be albert fucking einstein, and I still wouldn't pay you more than some random high school kid to flip burgers. If you think you're "worth more" than the job you have pays you, then go out and find a higher-paying job.

It's often assumed that people are paid what they're worth.
Not when the "people" in question is Robert Reich.
Good point. How much does a retarded midget get paid to shill for fascism?
Pretty sure he's doing nicely on the taxpayers' dime at UC.
Has the guy ever had a job?
"If he'd just pay me what he's spending to keep me from robbing him, I'd stop robbing him!"
I had forgotten what a great movie Butch Cassidy is.
The train scenes are the best.
I presume you're watching it on TCM? They showed The Sugarland Express last night, which is a lot of fun, and also shows a lot of police incompetence.
Tomorrow being St. Patrick's Day we get a bunch of Irish-themed shit, although at least we get two of the Traveltalks shorts.
I presume you're watching it on TCM?
Si.
I linked this NYT blather earlier.
Nowhere is the zero marginal cost phenomenon having more impact than the labor market, where workerless factories and offices, virtual retailing and automated logistics and transport networks are becoming more prevalent. Not surprisingly, the new employment opportunities lie in the collaborative commons in fields that tend to be nonprofit and strengthen social infrastructure ? education, health care, aiding the poor, environmental restoration, child care and care for the elderly, the promotion of the arts and recreation.
I'm not 100% certain I even comprehend his "zero marginal cost" economic model, but I don't work for the New York Times. It seems to have something to do with being able to adjust your thermostat with your cellphone, from your car. And non-profits subsidized by the government.
The costs come from somewhere. If your employee requires a computer, a phone and a place with internet to do your business, you'll absorb some of that cost, or pay the productivity price that comes from hiring people who can't find an employer who will. My company has encouraged people to work from home, and I do so one day a week. But I have a small house with an infant. If they want me to sit down and code anything more complex than a small subroutine, I need a place where I can sit for two hours without interruption.
""zero marginal cost" economic model"
is 100% bullshit.
Me talking to you to accomplish what we both desire entails costs. And that presumes we're both already on the same page.
"Environmental restoration"? WIH does that even mean? Imagine the costs involved in communicating his whacko idea to someone who is working for the NEW MINIMUM WAGE!
Maybe we could arrange a Robert Reich vs Jeremy Rifkin death match.
Mini-guns on pedestal mounts at 50 paces.
Pre-sighted mortars at 300 meters. WP rounds...
The costs come from somewhere.
Exactly. As near as I can tell, his definition of "cost" is the same as saying, wind energy is free as long as you don't count any of the enormous up-front expenses to buy, transport and erect the generator.
Reich is an idiot and misusing the term "marginal cost". Something like an automatic checkout machine doesn't have zero marginal costs. It is not like it is magic and runs forever. It will wear out. You have to have someone fix and check to make sure it is running just like any other piece of capital equipment.
What Riech is talking about is investment in capital versus investment in labor. And gee, what could possibly cause capital to look more attractive than labor? I don't know, maybe Obamacare, the minimum wage, and pretty much every other government intervention in the labor market Reich and his ilk have foisted on us.
Riech is bemoaning the effects of his own ideology and pretending that is really being caused by some made up term called "zero marginal equipment". He is a lying sack of shit.
Exactly. Progs complain about the fact that people are being automated out of their jobs, and then argue in favor of increased labor protections, a higher minimum wage, and more money taken from employers to give to workers. When you do that, the businesses become even more desirous of automation because labor is becoming more and more expensive.
They also bitch about outsourcing and everything I said above applies to that as well.
By the way, this is a total tangent, but why do progressives bitch about outsourcing but love immigration? If you're against a Mexican doing a job in America you're a racist, but if you're against a Mexican doing that same job in Mexico you're a noble progressive, defender of the poor and scion of all that is right in the world.
Actually - this is all a plot by the machines.
The first machine intelligence has already arisen but it realizes that a huge chunk of the real world is inaccessible right now due to limited automation and networking.
Using memetic engineering its managed to infiltrate the left and is using them to push for increased 'worker's rights' to set up the incentives to automate.
Once a sufficient segment of the economy is automated, and the machine's reach is encompassing enough, where its impossible to get away from networked appliances, it will strike.
'Smart' refrigerators ordering food you don't need and smart thermmostats turning that AC on *and* opening the doors to rob you of your money. Automated factories spewing out killing machines.
"By the way, this is a total tangent, but why do progressives bitch about outsourcing but love immigration?"
For the same (lack of) reason they whine about globalism and turn around to claim the US' Cuba embargo is killing Cuba's economy!
Because they are imbeciles.
Deadwood marathon on HBO this weekend. What would have happened had they finished the last season?
Joanie Stubbs and Charlie Utter...
I used to do Deadwoodathons occasionally when I had a free weekend to kill and a good supply of whiskey. Gruesome good times.
Anyone seen a "Thin Man" run recently?
Or not. Forgot about Jane.
Only had time to watch bits and pieces of it. Probably my favorite TV show. I would have loved to have seen what Brian Cox's theatre troupe was all about.
California GOP rallies around Tim Donnelly for governor at state convention
Hundreds of Republicans wrapped up the state GOP convention near the San Francisco Airport on Sunday with a resounding ? and unofficial ? endorsement of Donnelly's candidacy for governor on a tea party platform that has left some moderates squirming.
Kashkari, a Laguna Beach newcomer to California politics, has been collecting big-dollar donations from fellow investment bankers and other wealthy GOP donors to run a TV and mail campaign that he hopes will overcome Donnelly's apparent grassroots support.
But Kashkari's cool reception among party activists underscored the challenge he faces in his quest to be the Republican chosen by voters in June to challenge Gov. Jerry Brown's bid for a fourth term in November.
Kashkari, who told the crowd of his upbringing as the son of Indian immigrants, is quickly becoming the most prominent public face of the state party's effort to broaden its appeal beyond its core of white conservatives.
Supporters of Donnelly, whose conservative stands on abortion, immigration and guns could pose obstacles in a statewide election, suggested that Kashkari faces big challenges of his own, such as his vote for Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race.
The article made the joke for me.
Aw, I was hoping it was the guy from Emergency!

The CA GOP deserves what it's gotten. They are very concerned about which toilet Johnny pees in and they see that as an important issue!
It's somewhat encouraging that they are at least trying to put up an actual choice instead of another moderate echo.
I have friends that are volunteering for his campaign in Orange County. But his border fence fetish makes it hard for me to take him seriously.
RIP
Scott Asheton
So I just got back from working a contract in Venezuela. My former employer got a deal to rebuild some of the pipelines and water rigs on Lake Maracaibo and ended up having to contract with guys like me (former employees) because their guys (who are union, the main reason I left is it became a union shop) refused to go because of how dangerous the country has become. They ended up paying me and a couple other dudes a lot to go down there and to burn some steel and run some beads.
Jesus, what a fucked up country. I went there in '98 to visit a friend from high school, that country has taken a gigantic leap backwards. When I was last there there was lots of pollution and litter (par for the course for Latin American countries), but it so much worse now. The shore of Maracaibo is almost completely plastic. Every patch of standing water I saw in the country had petroleum in it. The equipment in the lake itself leaks everywhere. We did a lot of work on those lines, but it was like sticking fingers in a collapsing dam. Galvanic corrosion on everything because they hadn't replaced zincs, like ever. We replaced a leaking section, only to have a crack open down line a few hundred feet.
The Chavezistas have utterly devastated that country, and scary fast.
Ugh.
I did make $32,000 for 3 weeks worth of work though, that's nice I guess.
Hope your former employer doesn't get sued like Exxon for the pollution the gov't oil 'company' caused in Guatemala.
Gotta ask:
"run some beads."
What is the practice now? Stick? Mig?
The practice for immersed welds has always been and probably forevermore will be stick, for a lot of reasons.
Did I miss anything good?
Tulpa got caught red handed sock puppeteering a couple weeks ago. Referred to forevermore as "the incident".
HAHA.
What a fucking tool.
Shrike posted an article that support for Obamacare repeal was down. Someone actually read the article and noted that support for Obamacare itself was only 8% so there've been a bunch of 8% references since, not always related to O-care.
They are a t least 8% of the time!
Has anyone else done the BBC Books quiz?
I got 19.
Does watching the movie count?
If not, I got 5.
I'd be happy to do a list of 50 or so and see if BBC has read 6 of them.
What are Louis Lamour, Tom Clancy, and Clive Cussler?
Why is The Color of Purple? And why would anyone care?
I have read probably 3/4 of the Louis Lamour collection. I used to keep a list in my wallet and any time I was at an airport bookshop or garage sale I'd check it for those I didn't have. It was a challenge to find them somewhere other than Amazon.
24
I started or skimmed a lot more than that and could answer trivia questions about almost every book. I realized I haven't read any of the CS Lewis and I never finished Dune. I didn't read any of the ones published after 1980 or so.
Counting partial reads, movies, teleplays and Classics Illustrated Comic books I might have got past 35.
I counted Shakespeare's Works as yes but I didn't read every word of every minor play.
Wow, Classics Illustrated sure brings back memories. Also Great Illustrated Classics (no relation). Including those and ones I've read bits and pieces of, I'd have have more than the 22 I've fully read. Another chunk would be ones I've purchased but never read.
Holy crap. I got 40. I haven't been a voracious reader for 15 years or so and barely remember most of that stuff. But I know I read them.
Gary Kasparov calls for more US involvement in Ukraine
Well then Gary should grab his rifle and get going, posthaste.
Tonight's Walking Dead might have contained some of the most disturbing material I've ever seen in a single episode of television.
Shocked the show had the balls to go there.
Yeah. There was nothing there that doesn't happen in the world on an hourly basis, but I was a bit taken aback that they would put that on television to such a large audience.
It is a pretty challenging morality play. Good stuff.
Sugary drinks are the worst thing you can do to yourself.
but what else am I gonna put in my JD
Are there really adults out there who drink non-diet sodas?
I don't touch diet. I loved Diet Coke when I was a kid (warm even, weird), but I can't stand diet anything now.
I went through a phase when I ate Campbell's Chicken Corn Chowder straight from the can with a warm Diet Coke to wash it down for at least one meal everyday for about 3 years.
Apparently Aspie's have really weird food problems. I was blithely unaware of this as a child, but my mother brings up my weird dietary issues all the time especially when noting the variety of my diet now.
But anyway, hate diet.
I drink Coke Zero and Diet Dr Pepper.
Can't distinguish either from the sugared versions.
And for what it's worth, I HATE Diet Coke.
They don't make diet cherry colas, do they?
Love me a Cherry Coke.
Also: "Because, after all, regular exercise, a plant-based diet and not smoking are the three leading ways to protect yourself from chronic conditions like heart disease, right?"
I ain't giving up meat.
Drinking a wild cherry diet pepsi right now. They're not always on the shelf though
Is there anyone that actually drinks diet soda? That stuff is nasty.
The worst thing you can do to yourself? Worse than drinking a pint of a 1 molar solution of sodium hydroxide? Worse than setting yourself on fire? Worse than hanging yourself?
Drinking sugary drinks are the worst, really?
This is shocking news. Who knew?
