Who doesn't love roads?
SOMALI LIBBERTARIANZ!
James Madison?
And a link for my comment.
Rereading that, is there a single sentence in that entire thing that isnt genius?
What the holy fuck happened to the political class's ability to right?
joez law:
write, of course.
Sigh.
And, yes, Im having a conversation with myself. Deal with it.
It's all good, robc. I mean except for the writing, you're right about that.
To be fair to myself, our political class also struggles with their ability to right.
They have no clue what a right is.
Have a beer. It helps.
I have a 2 hour drive ahead of me, but otherwise, sounds like reasonable advice.
For those wondering, Im this --||-- close to signing a lease.
Pretend those are arrows.
In Louisville, or elsewhere?
Would you happen to have a cider at this establishment? Will you have food? Or will it strictly be a brewery?
Let me know and I'll make a trip?
Bowling Green.
No cider, no food. Although hopefully nearby food establishments will deliver.
robc: two words.
Food trucks.
How is that different? I mean, aren't we all just having conversations with ourselves?
Most of the time we use different sock puppets to have these conversations so it doesnt look so crazy.
We will need an address of course. Ohh and if you saw my crying beer yesterday there may be some kettles coming on the market very soon with an excellent lineage.
How quaint!
Imagine the the grading and comments if that was turned in as a poly sci or constitutional law class essay today.
Hello.
Howdy!
Salutations.
Jeez. You still on the west coast?
Boker tov.
I thought the mighty Stimulus was supposed to give us all this mighty infrastructure.
Wasn't shovel ready.
By shovel ready simply means the ability to shovel money at something. Thus, things are always shovel ready when it comes to govspend.
Well, that is certainly true.
It was too fine by half. Shovel ready projects would have favored men working over women. I think they're beyond the hair splitting to the "find any damn thing that will work" stage.
"President Obama will either announce a new $302 billion transportation bill this year, or the "vision" for one."
Haven't you heard? He saved money so...ergo...derp...spend!
You cannot expect a Democrat - or a Republican, for that matter - to not make it rain in an election year.
And since half of all years are election years, start building a virtual ark to protect your bitcoins.
He's got to get in some last payoffs before Congress comes firmly under the control of the opposition party.

An edit button would be doubleplusgood.
No, because then Bo Cara could erase the racist things he posted.
What? When was this?
I missed that, he went racist?
Well, he said it's OK to call Clarence Thomas an "Uncle Tom", and became conspicuously absent when called upon to defend it.
Wow.
Just...wow.
I do think he is legitimately libertarian, but his hatred of all things right wing leads to insane comments like that.
He didn't go quite that far, but he was playing stupid with what calling him an Uncle Tom means, insinuating that a black guy calling another black guy an UT may not be that bad because it denigrates an individual instead of an entire race.
He went full retard on that one.
I thought the full retard came about earlier, in the defense spending thread?
As a Civil/Structural Engineer I fucking love roads. I drive on some rural/mountainous roads because I simply love to marvel at the engineering. However, these mega transportation bills never put people like me to work. Instead they go to the engineering megacorporations and the budget gets blown on study after study and excessive planning with no action. By the time the work gets to a guy like me the project is 2 years late and overbudget and it will be my fault if it isn't done next Friday.
And unfortunately, there's no way to keep the feds from dipping their fingers in that particular pie. Madison could get away with vetoing a national roads bill because at that time, the country was sparsely populated and most people traveled on old Indian trails anyway, or had carved out well-worn paths from the farming settlements to the cities. So he could reasonably state that the federal government didn't need to get involved.
But in a complex, mass society with over 300 million people, where the vast majority of goods we consume come from somewhere other than where we live, it's inevitable that the feds are going to get involved in a nationalized infrastructure in order to facilitate the movement of those goods.
sounds like software development
More cold air from the Arctic could lead to temperatures as low as 50 degrees below the averages across the United States.
And the Greater Los Angeles area will soon be flooded by a massive rain storm.
Hey, they wanted their drought ameliorated, right?
I certainly do but that hasn't stopped the local news media from milking this story for all its worth.
Not just local, it was on my local channel this morning. I haven't been out to LA in a few years but as I understand it currently resembles a post-apocalyptic wasteland?
How would one notice?
For South Floridians, LA looks like and endless Coral Way.
I can understand the concern for mudslides since a lot of the foothill areas are dry and burnt out from wildfires.
But the rest of the area seems fine to me. At worst there might be some street flooding but nothing you still can't drive in.
I don't watch the local news. Is it really gonna' rain?
Yeah, supposedly we are supposed to get an inch overnight into tomorrow and then as much as 2 inches Friday into Saturday.
Biggest rain even in two years.
That's moist!
I'm reminded of this from a few months back.
It's pissing me off because we planned to go to NYC on the 1st of March but the weather doesn't look so hot. We're not sure anymore. Damn.
It can't be colder than Montreal!
Yeah, seriously. Unless you're worried about the drive, I'm confused.
I'm between Rufus and NYC, and haven't heard anything about bad weather this weekend. Perhaps I need to pay more attention...?
Really? Been talking to my friend in NYC. She seems to think so. Wet snow, cold etc.
We even looked at Boston.
Actually, weird but Montreal and NYC are normally different but the last couple of years similar in terms of cold.
My wife is a scared little cat when it comes to driving in snow in the Adirondacks. I have a fucking 4x4 for cripes sake.
No way, unless it's been really warm in Montreal, it's definitely colder than NYC has been. I'm in Chicago now and it's still significantly colder here than NYC, and not nearly as cold here as it was when I lived in Montreal (ending 2006).
Last year we went to NYC around this time was actually worse than Montreal.
Albeit, for two days only. The three days we were there that is. The 4th was beautiful but we were leaving.
Bah.
The Northway is that dangerous?
Be a good Canadian and come on down to SC.
Love the Carolinas - haven't spent enough time there. My wife's uncle's wife is from NC.
Why not go to Palm Springs? I went last weekend, and it is 80 percent Canadian this time of year. And it was in the 80s.
As I told a friend the other day: A 4x4 is good, but the sht ain't magic.
Adirondacks? You mean those pregnant speed bumps you call mountains out there?
PUHLEESE!
Try Independence Pass in GOOD weather, or the Mokee Dugway...that will send you wife into full on batshit disassociation.
I'm headed to the Mississippi Blues Trail and Little Rock next week. If I see the devil at the crossroads, or Hillary at the Clinton Museum (but now I'm being redundant), I'll tell 'em y'all say "hey."
This City is headed for a disaster of Biblical proportions...
That's a bit more accurate.
Thanks dickless.
If we could amputate it from upstate, we might be able to get sanity for half the population of the state.
It's a warm 25 degrees. Besides, how much time do you plan to spend outside and sober?
Well, we do like to walk in NYC.
That reminds me. I have to find my flask.
...while Fox News has hit its 146th consecutive month as the top rated cable news network in the U.S.
It helps when you're unique in a glutted market.
I wonder how they choose what to put on the air? I wonder if this makes them 'successful'...someone should look into this.
Yes, someone should look into them...

isn't the FCC considering looking into this?

Which is why we need pre-K school so that the children will grow up to watch the proper media channels
This is what happens when your channel goes full retard on gun control. There is only a reasonably small swath of America that really wants to put the screws in on gun control, yet, because the media is part of that swath and those in the media simply can't imagine anything other than their experience, the news channels act as if virtually everyone wants it. Then they wonder why no one watches.
Brrazil yanks sexy t-shirts for world cup. The green one is awesome.
Is this a clever marketing ploy to reinforce Brazil's sexy image? Otherwise it would seem that playing this down would hurt the economic payout of the games.
"Lookin' to score"...that is lame. The other one is clever.
Pakistan warns American plans to withdraw from Afghanistan completely this year could push Afghanistan into a civil war.
If the only thing keeping your relationship together is the tenant, you might want to think seriously about divorce.
I am happy with Pakistan reaping the harvest of their constant meddling, and us ending ours - if the Afghans so desire. So...Sod off, Pak.
Yep. Win-win and Fuck U.
but, but, NUKES!
We haven't fired nukes, and Pakistan is saving theirs for India.
I cannot imagine that India's SOF don't spend 95% of their planning and training on "how to get those $@ing Pak nukes"
Why would they want to get Pakistani nukes when they have their own?
Take them off line, next war they have.
When, not if.
Pakistan is saving theirs for India.
Yes. I was simply derping on the 'falling dominoes' theorists that try to keep us entangled in places where we do not belong.
Good for America, bad for India. The last time the US pulled out of Afghanistan, a whole bunch of asshole jihadis went after India. These assholes basically have to fight at least 1 of 3 infidel enemies at any given time - America, Israel, or India.
Yeah, I would avoid any Kashmir vacations in 2015.
Did you know there's a "corporate consumption complex" conspiring to make us think we have a "right" to do dangerous things?
Nothing sticks in the craw of a fascist more than the freedom to choose things they don't approve of.
The Public Health Nazis will never yield. They can't be reasoned with, they will insist everyone yield more and more ground as they 'nudge' us towards their vision of a healthier life.
But it's just not possible for any sane adult acting freely to make a choice other than what the right-thinking people would make. This is what the control freaks actually [at least claim to] believe.
^This. Especially since life expectancy trends show how poor our choices have been.
Inorite? Statistically, if you make 26, you're very likely to see 65 and a large percentage will see 80. American life expectancy is fucked up because it is more dangerous for people, especially males, aged 14-24 than many other places.
It is the inability to Mind Your Own (Fucking) Business that leads to a life as a statist.
How many more people will die every year without autos to transport people to hospitals, pharmaceuticals to treat even the smallest infected scratches, alcohol to make horrible marriages tolerable, etc.? Fuck these guys.

Suffers? Also, what is erection of the clitoris?
It's made of the same kind of tissue as your penis, so it becomes engorged in the same way. You've probably seen it happen before.
I wonder if ED drugs would do the same thing?
Off-label use of Viagra by women can lead to it as well.
What is that one drug/pill that some men can take but all women shouldn't even touch it or something? I kind of imagined viagra in a similar fashion but guess not.
You're very kind, Nikki.
Aw, that's cute.
Austin police chief puts jaywalking arrest into perspective
(Apologies if this has already been put out here. It's my first prepared, outside link.)
This actually made the BBC. About half the comments were mocking Texas at large. The other half were split between blaming the victim and blaming the cops. Almost none pointed out the pattern of abuse by police.
I'd just be happy if any of the commenters pointed out how fat those cops were.
This is a TV show about a triplet of girls who turned an entire generation gay.
(Apologies if this has already been posted here.)
I know the jaywalking arrest was already posted. This is the police chief's response.
So the Austin police chief admits that police have already set the bar ridiculously low for themselves.
I live in central Texas, near Austin. I suggested on my neighborhood Facebook page that the cops were way out of line. Many agreed, but just as many insisted that she got what she asked for. Some even said that her wearing headphones was a provocation; that she should be ready to respond to cops anytime should they need to bark commands at her.
I'm not kidding.
I am glad I don't have neighbors like that... or do I? I would hate to find out, should we have something like this happen, and I see their reactions.
Isn't Austin where they recently had a little bit of a dog shooting problem?

My fiancee is 6' even.
We are the same height.
I don't mean that kind of large.
he didn't say in which direction she's six feet
She could be 6' tall with a 40 inch bust and 50 inch hips. That would put her in the sexy amazon warrior class. It's hard to find a good skin-tight armourer these days though.
According to a calculator I just found, her weight is in the 28th percentile for her height and age.
So, no, not the kind of large you meant. But she aint a stick either.
I once dated a woman who was almost as tall as I am (6'2"). She was quite, um, statuesque/Amazonian ... I couldn't imagine her any thinner than she was... no complaints here.
Ive seen pictures when she used to be thinner, and honestly, she wasnt nearly as attractive.
But, then again, I was 6', 125# when I graduated HS, and I look like a concentration camp survivor in pictures.
Because they've read Matthew 22:15-22?
For nearly 20 years now, Ive had the concept for an essay entitled "On Being Caesar" bouncing around my head.
Its based on those verses and the fact that in a democracy (or democratic republic), we are all Caesar.

I believe the treasury now pays out in form of Obamaphone.
If we're all Caesar, that means we're getting stabbed to death on March 15?
They moved it to April 15.
Two days after the Ides of April, and right smack in the middle of Tax Day, when each of us dies a little bit more.
If you don't want to pay your taxes, why, you're free to spend a weekend with the Pain Monster!
You know, this gives me an idea. Since leftists enjoy high tax rates on wealthier Americans as much, if not more, for their punitive value as for extracting wealth, perhaps it would make everyone happy if taxpayers had the option of putting their hand in a box of pain (stimulating nerve endings but not actually permanently damaging anything) for ten minutes or paying their taxes.
And if you choose to pay taxes instead, you'll be classified as not human?
What does the government care who or what pays the bills? Besides, corporations.
An IRS agent stabs you with a gom jabbar.
That would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?
right smack in the middle of Tax Day, when each of us dies a little bit more.

Greenpeace co-founder: No scientific evidence of man-made global warming
There is no scientific evidence that human activity is causing the planet to warm, according to Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore, who testified in front of a Senate committee on Tuesday.
Moore argued that the current argument that the burning of fossil fuels is driving global warming over the past century lacks scientific evidence. He added that the Earth is in an unusually cold period and some warming would be a good thing.
"There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth's atmosphere over the past 100 years," according to Moore's prepared testimony. "Today, we live in an unusually cold period in the history of life on earth and there is no reason to believe that a warmer climate would be anything but beneficial for humans and the majority of other species."...

Canada's future PM:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs.....00724.html
He's such an idiot. My wife said last night, "he seems to make a lot of gaffes." In which I responded, 'and will get elected nonetheless.'
He's a commie liberal and the anti-Harper train express is too strong at the moment. It's exactly what happened in the USA. People were 'Bushed out' and this led to a lame-ass like Obama being elected.
Canada will soon have Obama-light ruling the country. What a fucking mess.
The thing is, there's no excuse to have made such a joke. None. Any thinking man with any sense of deep thought would have avoided it. But he's an emotional feller (what, being a drama teacher and all) and tends to ignore rational thought.
Get him a Tonka truck already.
And the CBC will give him the sort of pass they never gave a Stockwell Day.
They're in 'build your leader' myth overdrive.

Yes. And the Mounties would be the redshirts.
Would the RCMPs be the Redshirts, then?

Green meltdown in Germany. The green shit is hitting the reality fan. Green energy doesn't make a difference ecologically and it puts a lot of poor people in jeopardy.
The same thing is happening in the UK. IIRC, many people have resorted to burning wood, which is decidedly not green.
Only if you're cutting down vast amounts of otherwise healthy trees to do it. The vast majority of wood that I (and most of the people I know who burn wood for heat) use is cut from already downed trees. We had an ice storm a few weeks ago that busted up a bunch of cedar trees in my yard. That will be a good chunk of next year's firewood. I've NEVER cut down a healthy tree.
And even if the act of burning wood isn't green, it's certainly greener than using up fucktons of electricity made from burning coal.
The only environmental problem with burning wood is the particulates. It's fine for rural people to burn wood, but you don't really want a lot of it happening in dense cities.
It's a good thing I live in rural KY.
That's what you get for messing with fission!
I saw Tony in the 'Libertarian Paranoia' thread in action. Holy shit he's diseased.
Here's the thing. When I discovered Reason back in 2003 or thereabouts, it took me about, five minutes, to figure out the backbone of libertarian thought (non-aggression principal). Once this sets in your head, it's not that hard to follow the logic and flow of its positions. Sure, it's been 11 years and I'm still learning but for the life of me can't understand the lies perpetuated against it.
I would argue the backbone is right of self ownership, and the NAP follows from it.
But tomato, potato.
Fine. I just learned a new thing.
But I get the gist of it.
Tomate, patate.
Tomato, Potato, they're both nightshade.
Poutine for you Canuks!
In the future, all Canada will be poutine.
it took me about, five minutes, to figure out the backbone of libertarian thought (non-aggression principal).
I wish we had more non-aggression teachers, too. Too many school stories in the Brickbats.

Is Black History Month still needed?
RACIST!
Starting in 2017 it will be re-named Obama's Birthday Month.
^Excellent! We will have 30 days of circuses to celebrate. Bread will be thrown to the faithful.
Excellent.
It could be modeled on Kwanzaa, with each day of the month celebrating an Obama virtue or accomplishment.
We ran out trying to figure out what to dedicate the 1st to.
"First Black President", DUH!
The first black american to become president was Joseph Jenkins Roberts ( Just not of the US )
Apparently Black History Month has done its job well.
Actually, I learned practically nothing about history during Febuaries. They spewed ideological claptrap. I learned more on my own than from any official 'efforts' on historical matters.
There are a whole lot of people who want to replay the 60s, which requires acting as though race relations are stuck in the 60s.
I can't wait for the Boomers to retire and lose their cultural influence.
You are too nice to the boomers. And they won't retire until they die.
For sure. After all, those idiots gave us Obama. Oh wait...

The ENTIRE left acts as if it's still the 60s in terms of race relations. Why do you think Rachel Maddow asked Rand Paul how he would have voted on the CRA? People like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton have made millions from it. And as long as it works, they will continue to do it, even when everyone who was alive during the 60s is long dead. Because misdirection and strawmen are all they have.
One of my drinking buddies is black. He's a lawyer doing some awesome real estate stuff. My wife is black. She's an accountant doing awesome finance stuff. Black History Month has never come up as a topic. Ever. I think it's important to Baby Boomer Blacks. The ones who invented Kwanzaa. To the rest, not so much.
Oh, it's also important to ESPN, CNN, etc. to prove their liberal cred.
Don't forget PBS, they need it to show that they are still important.
Of course it's not fucking needed. History is history. PERIOD.

Atheists plan conservative outreach with booth at CPAC
Isn't libertarianism conservative outreach for atheists?
I kid, I kid. Besides, for all the atheist-bashing conservatives perpetrate it's usually against liberal pandering to nontheists and hostility toward Christians. The left isn't exactly a safe harbor for someone espousing religious freedom and government noninvolvement.
Will they be able to resist being smug and condescending?
Of course not. But, the CPAC was stupid not to invite them.
And now they've kicked them out.
I wonder if this could have something to do with it--
or this--
Maybe an atheist group that wasn't so clearly leftist? One that understands that 'outreach' doesn't mean 'attack'.
The Libertarians need a booth since they are the only truly conservative party.
Too bad they can't organize their way out of a wet sack.
President Obama will either announce a new $302 billion transportation bill this year, or the "vision" for one.

This would explain the propaganda piece (featuring a guest appearance by Ray la Hood) on the weather channel this morning about the BILLIONS of potholes and crumbling roadz in this our once-great land.
I'm so glad DirecTV is still in a contract dispute with the corporate owners of the Weather Channel over carriage fees. Even if I do prefer the graphics package they use to what Weather Nation has.

The "problem" was caused by the state, as the guy unwittingly admits, in the form of bad inheritance laws:
It doesn't sound like it's just "automatically" done that way, which would be reasonable. Instead of equal split being the default, it appears to be the only option.

Crispin Glover, aka George McFly from 'Back to the Future', explains why he hates the ending of the movie
Crispin Glover starred as George McFly in 1985's "Back to the Future," but he didn't appear in the film's subsequent sequels. Why? As it turns out, Glover had serious issues with the Robert Zemeckis movie's finale, a bit of wish fulfillment that imagines the McFly clan as wealthy and materialistic. "It made me realize that something was specifically going on in how corporate media was both funded and distributed," Glover told HuffPost Live host Ricky Camilleri. "It affirmed some value system. Maybe it's corporate value systems as opposed to humans' value systems."
Yes, it's unconscionable that the movie would reward George McFly for punching Biff out and thus regaining his manhood and self-confidence with material wealth.
What kind of message is that? He should have been made even more emasculated in the new timeline!
Corporations are of course just the people who comprise them.
Corporashuns arent people! (But soylent green is.)
Listen up, wrong thinker: Corporations exist entirely independently of human beings, as do economic forces. Only government is the people.
That's so depressing.
Must admit to having a soft spot for Crispin Glover, if only for River's Edge. If he wants to talk bollocks and create lunatic art, fine by me. He ain't telling me who to vote for, and he has to go around being called Crispin, so I'll cut him some slack.
So he really was a pansy?
Well yeah, I figured he would be more upset that George McFly didn't seem to notice or care that his 'son' looked exactly like that Calvin guy his wife had a crush on in high school.
He should have stabbed him to death then and become a serial killer.
George became financially successful because he had the confidence to try and make living doing what he loved, writing science fiction, rather than settling for what he could get. The alternate George was a happier man in all aspects of life than the original George.
And the fact that he was essentially helping Biff out by giving him make-work jobs that he probably overpaid him for.
Biff casually coming into their house in 1985 after trying to rape her in 1955 is such a creepy aspect of that movie.

At this point I just treat climate believers the way I do any other religious fundamentalist. Nod and keep moving.
This.
If the Reality v Climatologist Predictions can't convince them of the absolute wrongness of their position, they can't be convinced by anything I might say.
Does he have any explanation for why all of the models which predicted steady and continuous warming based on that premise have failed so spectacularly?
California couple finds $10 million in buried treasure while walking dog
Somewhere an IRS agent is licking his lips.
I'd tell no one and trickle them out onto the market. "I found these 10 coins in grandma's shoe box after she died."
Even worse, the coins could be subject to FDR's executive order 6102. They might have to turn them over to the Feds with no compensation.
Just a little advice for those who may happen upon pre-depression(1933) area gold: STFU about it. Really. Horde it; melt it down, but STFU.
I think it's a catch-22. If they were smart about money, they would already be rich.
I'm hoping they really found $100 million and this was just the amount they told the Feds about.
But probably not.
New progressive pipedream: Save the Post Office by turning it into a banking and loan racket for the poor
Unbanked and underbanked Americans pay a hefty price for their lack of access. According to the Postal Service IG report, the average household spends $2,412 a year on interest and fees for alternative financial services. This is about one-tenth of their gross income, going right into the corporate accounts of unscrupulous and predatory operations. If the post office can deliver these services at a dramatic discount, they could save families thousands of dollars, and drive the conglomerates that prey on these communities out of business. Not only does this fit with the regulatory imperative of protecting Americans from financial abuse, it gives them breathing room to pay for necessities, putting the money back into the economy. People who filed for bankruptcy in 2012 were just $26 a month short of meeting their expenses. Discounted financial services could fill that gap, lifting many Americans out of desperation and stretching their income.
Discounted. Gee, I wonder who will be paying the difference?
Ending recessions. Truly. Postal banking would integrate well with the concept of giving everyone with a Social Security number an ATM account with the Federal Reserve, instead of intermediating it through a commercial bank. The physical ATMs could be at any of the 35,000 postal branches nationwide (or through their mobile-enabled postal account). Rajiv Sehti, an economics professor at Barnard College and Columbia University, explains that this would allow the Fed to directly target economic downturns. When the economy lags, the Fed could place a few hundred dollars in everyone's account, with the proviso that it gets spent immediately. That would offer an immediate and timely Keynesian stimulus, paid for by normal Fed operations (the Fed made $79.5 billion last year alone).
Inflation made easy!
If the private sector does this, it is called "predatory lending".
Ah, SSNs, the ultimate in mission creep.
Fuck off, slaver.
And just think of the efficiency of the IRS being able to make direct withdrawals from you account, not to mention the NSA being able to cut off your funds as easy as flipping a switch. 1984 has arrived in full.
The IRS can already do that, and in fact they do if you owe them enough money.
Back in the early 90's my parents ended up owing over $250,000 to the IRS when one of their businesses went belly up. They basically could not have a bank account because anytime money was deposited into it the IRS would withdraw it immediately
Looks like I need to make a trip to the Bahamas. Or some place beyond their reach. Where?
One thing I've always felt presented a serious problem for libertarians is the difficulty in arguing against people who aren't basing their arguments in reality. We're not really utopians, so when someone like this imbecile promises some bold new program that will end poverty, outlaw recessions forever, make everyone richer, and not cost you anything--well, our natural instinct is to cross our arms and point out that these things aren't possible for a government program, even if we'd like for them to be.
But of course, the problem is that people really don't like being told that magic isn't real, so that of course leads to the accusations that we're all just "selfish" and "cynical" no matter how many times our predictions play themselves out to the letter.
So how, in a democracy, can one persuade people with honesty and principle, when the other guy is just going to pound the table and promise everyone that he'll make all of their wishes come true?
People who filed for bankruptcy in 2012 were just $26 a month short of meeting their expenses.
If you are $26/month short why the fuck are you filing for bankruptcy?
A bankruptcy attorney is going to charge a few k to handle it right?
You are looking at years and years of shortfall to pay the lawyer. WTF?
And remember that is an average. A lot of people really can't pay. A good number of bankruptcies are filed by degenerate gamblers and drug addicts with hundreds of thousands of dollars in credit car debt.
So for the average to be that low, there must be a lot of people who can make their payments but have it granted anyway.
Its a standard call on Dave Ramsey, someone has 30k in debt, of which 27k is student loans, and they are struggling to make payments and want to declare bankruptcy.
He then calls them an idiot. Although politely. Usually.
Ruin your credit for seven years and not even get rid of your debt.
They need to repeal that exemption and make those discharged in bankruptcy. Maybe not totally dischargeable but eligible for a judge ordered cram down and readjustment.
I would pay for covering the federal guarantees by a surtax on all college endowments over a billion dollars. The colleges basically stole the money from the feds and the students. I would give it back.
I think making any loans discharged by bankruptcy half the lender and half the institution would just about cure the problem. I'll even add in a sop for the student who thinks they can just declare bankruptcy and move on. They cannot be discharged within seven years of the last loan received. That should give everyone enough skin in the game to find a reasonable accommodation.
I'd make it bankruptable, but get rid of the federal backing. Force the banks to actually look at what schools and what degrees people are getting instead of making it rain for $90,000 puppetry in women's studies majors at Bryn Mawr.
Or parents back the loans with assets, providing the same oversight.
For sure. But it would be a bad idea to walk away from the federal guarantees that are already there. The government should pay their debts no matter how stupid they are.
Again, I would pay for that by taxing college endowments. They created and benefited from the problem, they should have to help pay to fix it.
Good point, John. That unwinding will be necessary in all foreseeable futures.
Yes, because going to the Post Office to mail something isn't bad enough already. "Why did my check bounce?" "You're overdrawn. Any stamps today? Would you like to open a holiday savings account? Is your deposit liquid, fragile, or hazardous?"

Further proof of Global Warmingz: in the period between last Friday afternoon and yesterday morning, I have had a cumulative snowfall of two fucking feet. I admit it. I surrender. I'm ready for Spring.
When people in Montana think it is a bad winter, it is a bad winter.
In the wilds of Michigan we've gotten less than an inch of snow. There's still plenty of the white stuff leftover though.
March, April and May are still ahead.
Not huge snow in Vermont, but the frost is down into the ground so far that doors are getting jammed and the damned fence posts are getting pushed right out.
How's that unusual? One of my early memories is driving the 4 wheeler along the fence to help my dead pound the fenceposts back down.

The 1,400 gold pieces, dating to the mid- to late 1800s and still in nearly mint condition, were discovered buried in eight decaying metal cans on the couple's land last April, said coin expert David McCarthy of currency firm Kagin's.
Those coins were hidden to keep them from being confiscated during the New Deal. Obviously, they must be seized by Treasury agents, and those people should be fined another five million dollars.
Didn't the government say just that and try to take some gold coins that had been hidden during the Depression and later found by the person's grand kids?
They did take them, iirc. But they were uncirculated coins so the issues were murkier than this case.
Even though they are legal to own now. It would be like the ATF confiscating a rare bottle of wine your grandfather didn't poor our during prohibition.
Fucking assholes.
Yup.
I have a coin that FDR should have seized, but it was hiding in a bag until my dad bought the house and knocked out a wall. 1902 ten dollar gold piece in perfect condition. Dad sold the other 12 in the mid-1980s.

Actually, I think that 12 coins might have passed the numismatic exemption. I'm almost certain that given its history John's grandmother's would have.
My understanding of that case is that the feds were saying that the grandfather(?) was a mint employee and that he had stolen it. It was from a run of coins none of which had ever been circulated.
You cash these out ONE...AT...A...TIME.

Queen of the Feelz Dahlia Lithwick: America Now One Giant Stand Your Ground Zone
It's clear that at least some of the jurors in both cases took the principle of "stand your ground" into account to some degree during deliberations... ]Whether or not jurors in Florida are technically instructed to apply the "stand your ground" component of self-defense law, it's increasingly clear that they are, at minimum, confused about it (understandably) and may even be starting to apply it reflexively.
Yes, Dunn's attorney argued traditional self-defense. But, as former assistant U.S. attorney David Weinstein told the Associated Press, "I think people will say that because some of the language from the stand your ground statute gets embedded into the jury instructions, that stand your ground has an effect."
I might go further. I might say that whether or not specific jurisdictions define self-defense to include a duty to retreat, and whether or not specific juries are charged to apply it, America is quickly becoming one big "stand your ground" state, as a matter of culture if not the letter of the law.
Self-defense laws: bad because I think people are obviously too stupid to apply them the way I think they should.
Perhaps Ms. Lithwick should be a jury of one in all gun trials.
Castle doctrine is fucking common law, bitch, so fuck your "becoming."
Yes it is. And even in states that say there is a duty to retreat, do not say you have one in your own home. So the duty will never apply in the context of the Castle Doctrine.
Remember, Lithwick went to law school and she can't understand this.
Stanford law and clerked in the 9th circuit...
Her Wikipedia page tells you all you need to know.
Yup. And then worked at daddy's law firm before deciding to be a journalist. Basically any of the practicing lawyers who post on Hit and Run are more qualified to cover the Supreme Court than Lithwick. She went to a high end everyone gets an A law school, did a year as a clerk, answered the phones for daddy for a year and then moved on to being a professional hack.
There have to be hundreds of burned out lawyers who have practiced before the court who would happily take her gig and actually have some intelligent things to say. Lithwick is hired to preach the party line to the faithful. I think the fact that she is stupid and unqualified is what made her an attractive candidate to Slate. If she had any brains or qualifications, there would be some danger she might stray from the party line.
Neither of whom were lawyers. Presumably that shouldn't be a requirement for the Supreme Court bench in Dahlia's world
It's not a requirement in our world.
Seriously, there is no mandate that a court appointee have any experience in law. They just have to get past the senate.
Earl Warren was a governor. He might have been a lawyer, but he hadn't been a practicing one in a long time.
I am actually a bit sympathetic to the idea that someone other than a member of the Ivy League Constitutional Law Priesthood should be nominated to the court. But Lithwick doesn't want diversity. She just wants a better hack.
It's a shame really. There are a lot of really good, qualified judges out there who will never sniff the federal bench, much less the Supreme Court, because they went to the wrong law school.
Absolutely RBS. Worse than that, no one who is in the defense bar will ever sniff the court. You only get on the court by being a government hack.
The Court doesn't have a single member who has ever had defend someone in traffic court much less an actual trial. But that doesn't stop them from pontificating on how the law really works and should be.
Can we just go ahead and impose a moratorium of all news from FL that doesn't involve Florida Man?

Lithwick only has a job because Linda Greenhouse has to be able to point to someone as dumber and more dishonest than she is.
Jurors in this country have a sense of justice and fair play that comes for our culture. For this reason they take claims of self defense very seriously and are hesitant to convict someone where the victim was the initial aggressor. Lithwick, being a Prog, thinks cases should be decided on emotions and as much as possible the race and social status of the two parties and thus is appalled by these sorts of results.
And sex. Don't forget the Alexander case the left paraded around during the Zimmerman fiasco as proof that SYG is sexist, or racist, or something. Apparently tackling your victim for some ground-and-pound action doesn't qualify as aggression, and neither does returning to the house to fire a "warning shot" at your husband.
Via the all-powerful Wiki:
In 1933, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102, which outlawed the private ownership of gold coins, gold bullion, and gold certificates by American citizens, forcing them to sell these to the Federal Reserve. As a result, the value of the gold held by the Federal Reserve increased from $4 billion to $12 billion between 1933 and 1937.
GREATEST AMERICAN PRESIDENT
Even the rhetoric--accusing Americans with gold assets of 'hoarding' them and sabotaging the recovery--is straight out of the commie playbook.
Can you imagine if Obama tried to do this today? It's a good thing the American people are more distrusting and assertive than they were in 1933
Well, apparently Obama can also write laws with a stroke of his pen, and the left and media will cover for him.
Americans are HOARDING gold, so we have to confiscate it all and put it in a vault...for the economy.
Biden: 'I May Be a White Boy, but I Can Jump'
So the new conspiracy meme running around Facebook is that Bengazi was a setup. The allegation is that the Obama people wanted to release the Blind Sheikh to endear themselves to the Muslim Brotherhood and also give Obama a chance to look Presidential. The alleged plan was to have the militias kidnap the ambassador who would then be traded for the release of the Blink Sheikh. The of course fucked up the plan because they forget about the two CIA former seals who were next door and showed up to put up a fight both getting the Ambassador killed and convincing the militias they had been betrayed.
It is a crazy theory but it does explain a lot of things that are otherwise totally unexplainable like why an ambassador was there and without security (something that is totally inexplicable to anyone who has ever dealt with DOS), why the White House went to such huge lengths to not send the military in (they would have screwed up the kidnapping), and why they made up the ludicrous video story (if they had called it terrorism they would have had to have gone after the perpetrators, you know the people they made a deal with).
It is unlikely to be true of course. But the fact that it is even believable and would explain a good number of their actions tells you all you need to know about how vile and incompetent these people are.
You must be one of those NSA syops guys sent to plant false and misleading information amongst comment threads on the internet. Or, am I?

CPAC won't let the atheists have a booth. The stupid party strikes again. These morons can't help themselves. If there is an opportunity to engage in a completely pointless act that will allow the media to over play it to confirm their stereotypes, these idiots will take it every single time.
If the atheists are conservatives, let them have a booth.
They really like living up to the stupid party.
It's clear that at least some of the jurors in both cases took the principle of "stand your ground" into account to some degree during deliberations
I stumbled across one of the many moron focus groups on MSNBC one day. They were weeping and wailing about Stand Your Ground; the consensus of opinion was, "Bring back DUTY TO RETREAT!"
They were conspicuously silent on the "retreat from WHAT, exactly?" part of that proposition.
They resolutely cling to the fiction that self defense is exactly the same as randomly hunting down unsuspecting negroes and lynching them.
The duty to retreat basically tells people under attack that they have to first risk death and harm in an attempt to escape their attacker before they can defend themselves.
For example, a person is walking to their car on a dark night and is confronted by a man with a knife in the parking lot. In a duty to retreat state, the victim couldn't pull out a gun and threaten the man or defend themselves without first trying to make a run for it. Duty to retreat means, if there is an avenue of escape you have to take it even if that means risking the person catching you and harming you. When they catch you, you can then defend yourself since you have met your duty to retreat, but not before.
Yeah, that makes sense.
When you outlaw self defense only criminals will ... self defend.
Dead criminals make talking heads cry...
They resolutely cling to the fiction that self defense is exactly the same as randomly hunting down unsuspecting negroes and lynching them.
All they see is force being used by someone who is not a government agent. Everything else is irrelevant.
""Bring back DUTY TO RETREAT!""
So - what? So more people will die making a split second decision about 'what to do about this person stabbing me!'
or so they can throw more people in jail for legitimately defending their own lives?
Both?

It's just a phone call away to Mommy for a quick wire transfer of $8,500. The beard is now a symbol of the effeminate Brooklyn hipster. Not gay, but straight and effeminate. I almost choked, I laughed so hard after reading that. Thank you for sharing that gem.
So I finally watched the video of the cops that killed Nair Rodriguez outside of a movie theater in Oklahoma. I think someone posted it yesterday.
They are fucking animals. Every last one of them. The little tiny shred of hope I had left that there are good cops has been destroyed.
Anyone who becomes a cop and stays a cop is a shitbag.
And there are dozens or more videos just like that of cops all over the country. Did you see the one of the cop in New York who attacked the guy for filming him? Or the account the blogger in San Fransisco gave of the cop beating the shit out of him because he made the mistake of calling 911 for a hurt cyclist?
They are animals. And thanks to unions and crooked DAS are in virtually no danger of being held accountable. The cop in Culpepper, Virginia murdered a woman sitting in a church parking lot and only got manslaughter and if he is not out of prison already will be with in a year or two. They can murder you and the worst they will face, if anything is manslaughter and a few years in private cop jail hanging out with the child sex perverts.
It has long since become a national disgrace.
We need more Carl Dregas.
http://www.ncc-1776.org/tle199.....26-09.html
Well, they figure that since video evidence doesn't get their asses in trouble, then they have free reign.
It's really becoming that all the police have to do to beat you to death is say "STOP RESISTING" and you're lucky to come out alive.
I'd think at this point hearing the words "stop resisting" out of a cop's mouth would justify any and all efforts to escape given that the cops in question have probably lost all control of themselves at that point.
Yup. And they can arrest you any time they feel like it. Sure the DA will drop the charges. But you will still spend at least a night or maybe more time in jail, be totally humiliated and raped if you are not lucky. And since sovereign immunity is so strong and the laws are so vague, they will never even be reprimanded for it.
The case of the San Fransisco blogger I mentioned above is a great example of that. He wasn't doing anything but standing there and the cop tackled him and beat the shit out of him and took him to jail leaving him to rot until Monday. When he was released the deputy said "here is your court date show up on time and the charge will be dismissed". The Deputy knew it was a made up charge. When the guy asked "then why am I here?", the Deputy responded "a lot of young deputies out there looking to make a name for themselves". No shit.
I taught a legal class for the Army a while back and the subject of probable cause for arrest came up. Two black men in that class told stories of walking down the street and being arrested for nothing only to later be released and told by the jailers they were arrested because the cops needed to make sure they arrested someone that shift.
Most people have no idea the danger they are in when they interact with a cop in public.
Make of it what you will: years ago there was a bully in my high school. No one would stand up to him. One night, after a dance, he came out to find his precious car smeared all over - inside and out - with dog shit. Never bullied anyone again.
If things keep going the way they are, I suspect people are going to start taking matters into their own hands and being a cop will get a lot more dangerous. Won't that be great?
STEVE SMITH lives in Detroit?

The ACLU has brought up an interesting point about how MLB has talked the city council into ceding all their permitting authority to them for the All Star game this summer:
http://blogs.citypages.com/blo.....r_game.php
Basically, if you are a business in the "clean zone" (which is just about all downtown Mpls), you can't get a permit to add extra outdoor seating or run any other goofy promotions to get more customers unless you get MLB's OK.
MLB also gets to run all the riverfront parks for two weeks around the All Star game.
So much for the public trust. I don't blame MLB for taking the deal. I mean why not. I blame the city for looking at public assets as their personal possessions to be doled out as they see fit.
See, regulatory takings like this have an economic effect, and should be considered to be takings for Fifth Amendment purposes. Fuck.

Did the SPLC finally fold?
OFA too?
POS flew to St. Paul, MN to give his little speech about this today. Don't they have cameras and podiums in DC? Glad he didn't come to Minneapolis for this. I hate it when this POS shuts down the city for hours. Fuck him.
I heard on the radio this morning that "Republican Jan Brewer" was going to sign that bill in Arizona about the gays. I also heard that "Senate Leaders" say they won't be supporting Obama's proposed legislation.
That's media bias, right ?
And remember during the gay marriage debates Reason assured everyone that gay marriage won't mean that gays will become a protected class under the CRA?
Now Arizona is being vilified for passing a law that does nothing but say that they are not.
Four hellos. Must be a record.
Eh. You don't want to stay in Key West. Its like a fence in a field for crazy. Most places crazy people blow in and out, but there they just seem to stick.
Every time I visit somewhere like Key West I feel this way too. My laptop and cell phone work perfectly well in Key West, or Jamaica, or the Bahamas, so why do I have to sit in a cold, dirty, northern city to do my work?
But then you have to get the money back in. Or stay in Costa Rica and live the good life.
Undeclared?
If customs catches you with them, you are fucked.
You could fly them out 1 at a time, but that leads to same problem, unless you want to be tagged as a drug lord.
I asked him if he thought I was a bit over-the-top in my characterization as Ned Ryerson, the obnoxious insurance salesman forever accosting Phil Connors. Harold smiled and shook his head "No, Stephen, in comedy you have the stew?and you have the spice in the stew. Bill is the stew. He has to play it straight. You're the spice. Have fun!"
That one statement explains actors like Jack Black's entire career. Black was great as a side character in a film like High Fidelity but annoying as hell as the star of a full length film.
Because if you're from the North, you can't be racist.
It's a good thing we live in a free country.
Sailboat my friend. Sailboat. Yes they will search for drugs but they wont find 1oz rounds (if you put a modicum of effort into hiding them). For example, tape them to the top of the bilge.
Exactly. I am sure they are douche bags who will annoy the hell out of everyone. But so what? Don't give them and the media a chance to slam you.
$10 million in gold in Costa Rica, you probably wouldn't need to worry about coming back to the states, just live there in the lap of luxury
This link has a map of the clean zones.

Luckily it looks like my favorite dive bars in Nordeast are out of the zones.
I sure am glad I was given the opportunity to pay for the Twinks stadium so we can cash in on big events like the All Star game, I mean so we have lots of money to spend spend spend on free agents so we can compete, I mean, hmmmmm....
Why the fuck did we spend all that money?
