from businesses that have properly requested them

Seems like the business might have noticed.

This isn't unusual at all. I had a business client a few years ago who had a large overpayment in Illinois (about 150k). Every time we called to ask about where it is, the response was a very blunt "we don't have the money."

    1. UnCivilServant   11 years ago

      "we don't have the money."

"Yes you do, it's the money you stole from me. If you can't manage to only spend money that's actually yours, that's not my problem. Pony up."

When they pay it back, do they pay interest on that money like the government charges us when we don't pay them on time?

Oh, I forgot, we're not the ones with a police and military force backing us.

      1. sarcasmic   11 years ago

Who said they paid it back?

In IL, it takes someone with serious clout to intervene just to get normal bills for materials and services to be paid in less than 18 months to 24 months overdue.

      2. Cdr Lytton   11 years ago

Oregon surprisingly does. I made a mistake on my state tax form one year. Six months later they sent a notice of adjusted return showing what they fixed along with a refund of the overpayment and six months interest on the overpayment.

  5. Rich   11 years ago

FTFA: $34 million in requested refunds were placed on pending status and therefore not paid out

    Emphasis added.

So, no problem -- "Proper procedures were followed".

    1. Matrix   11 years ago

Yeah, I wonder if I can put my tax payments in "pending status" so I can delay paying them without penalties, fines, or interest. No? Why not? Oh... FYTW. Okay.
