Exene Cervenka of L.A. Punk Band X Moving to Texas Because California Has Become "A Liberal Oppressive Police State and Regulations and Taxes and Fees"
Exene Cervenka, singer from classic Los Angeles punk band X, has been making news this week for her massive estate sale, ongoing right now.
She's shipping out to Texas, and she tells Rolling Stone why:
"The other reason I'm moving, if the creek don't rise, is that when I moved to California in 1976, Jerry Brown was governor. It was barefoot hippie girls, Hell's Angels on the Sunset Strip, East L.A. lowriders, the ocean and nature. It was this fabulous incredible place about freedom. Now when I think about California, I think of a liberal oppressive police state and regulations and taxes and fees. I'd rather go someplace and have my own little place out on the edge of town. I'm a country girl at heart. It makes me happy when I see people in Texas open-carrying. It makes me feel safe. I'm not even a gun owner, but I'd like to see a gun rack in every pickup truck, like my boyfriend had when I was fifteen years old in Florida. An armed society is a polite society."
She cracks a smile. "Now Jerry Brown's governor again. He's done some great things, like balancing the budget and libraries are open on Sundays. But things are getting to the point in this country where people are going to have to fight to survive and fight for their rights."
I wrote a while back about the pro-market heresies of Pere Ubu punk David Thomas, and back in 2000 about the inescapably strange politics of anti-market rock n' rollers.

Texas (oddly) doesn't allow open carry.
I saw a lot of open carry on private property.
Only for hand guns. You can open carry long guns.
I hope to see the TxLege take this up in 2015. It was on the table in 2013 but was never voted on.
While on the more depressing end of old CA punk news, Jello Biafra actually campaigned FOR Jerry Brown . . .
Its always been stupidity ?ber alles for Biafra.
Nah, he used to be somewhat better but was then afflicted with a terminal case of Bush Derangement Syndrome.
Liberals are often confused by progressives.
OT: if your road system is based on a moebius strip, try not to shut down a part of it for sinkhole repair.
Okay, back to bitching about punk band politics.
If a road system is a Moebius strip, would a sinkhole also be a speed bump?
Could be a sinkhole on both sides.
I think of a liberal oppressive police state
Liberal = oppressive
Fucking fuck fuck.
"A Liberal Oppressive Police State and Regulations and Taxes and Fees"
How very redundant.
How 'bout leaving the good ol' US of A?
"Is Uncle Sam chasing people out of the U.S.?"
[...]
"Improving conditions overseas also could play a role. People who came to the United States for an education or to start a company and have moved back to their home country might find it a better place to get a job or live, DiSangro says."

Sounds like menopause is gripping her lifeless form.
Is that shoe polish on your tongue?
It was barefoot hippie girls, Hell's Angels on the Sunset Strip, East L.A. lowriders, the ocean and nature. It was this fabulous incredible place about freedom.
I lived in CA. Calabasas/Woodland Hills. This stuff still exists there - in so much as culture allows so.
She is a bitter old woman with Multiple Sclerosis. I will give her a break.
She is a bitter old woman with Multiple Sclerosis.
A progressive police state full of rules, regulations, taxes and fees will do that to the best of us.
It is funny how priorities change and "freedom" equates to libertine impulses in youth and a favorable tax treatment when you approach death.
Shriek illustrates why he fails the Purity Test.
Not 90%. Not 70%. Throw-a-dart-at-the-dartboard%.
He doesn't understand a fucking thing.
So enlighten the salt then. How is this woman improving her freedom situation by moving to Texas other than by moving to a lower tax rate state?
What for?
What for?
I knew you would fail.
We could start with California's gun laws, but there are so many great economic ones to choose from:
California bill would mandate fitted, rather than flat, sheets on hotel beds.
Or how about a bill waiting for the governor's signature, that declares suburban living in a house with a yard as an "inefficient land use" which is thus "blight" and can be taken over by eminent domain, to build high-rise apartment buildings instead. Because we need everyone to live in apartment buildings, because global warming.
When you ain't got nothing
you got nothing to lose.
Someone said that once. Some overrated lefty turd. But I'm not sure I understand your contention: so she moved to California and embraced libertinism as a young woman, and later learned to extend those social liberties to economic freedoms. Is it self-serving? Who cares? Why are you worried about her intentions, Mr. Libertarian? Have you got your own purity test to measure her against? Or are you kick up sand because you dislike her politics?
Her intentions are the subject of this article.
That's all you've got, Mr. Libertarian? She explains herself, but you've yet to explain why youthful libertine impulses shouldn't translate to lifelong lessons in economic liberty, whatever the personal implications.
So enlighten the salt then. How is this woman improving her freedom situation by moving to Texas other than by moving to a lower tax rate state?
Is it possible that she's moving to a lower regulation, lower corruption, lower fee-based, lower fucking progtard state? Is her single issue income tax?
Begging the question much? If that was the only reason, it would be sufficient. Moving to a state that is less disrespectful of property rights and personal liberty would obviously be an improvement in one's "freedom situation."
PB says "So enlighten the salt then. How is this woman improving her freedom situation by moving to Texas other than by moving to a lower tax rate state?"
http://goo.gl/pUAJv3
LOL you truly are a retard if you think tax rates are the only difference between Texas and Kalifornia.
How is this woman improving her freedom situation by moving to Texas other than by moving to a lower tax rate state?
Austin is more socially liberal then anywhere in California.
Basically you have all the left wing cultural phenomenon that goes on San Fran plus they have Christians with guns and they all seem to get along fairly well.
I think her description of 1976 California is pretty much what is going on in Austin....maybe the only difference is that the Hells angles are replaced by real life cowboys who are less rapey and violent...but other wise the same.
Austinite (for now) checking in. Austin is a proggy shit hole and getting worse. It is so detached from the rest of Texas it isn't funny. Our city counsel just passed a regulation that all new houses (private property!) being built *must* have a handicap ramp (not steps) to the front door, ADA-approved door widths to kitchen and bathrooms. Rent is 2x the state average, traffic is atrocious, and property taxes are the 14th highest in the nation. Cheers.
That's why there's San Antonio. We can visit Austin for fun and then make the easy drive back to the other Texas.

"It is funny how priorities change..."
Yes, intelligent people realize they make mistakes and change.
Brain-dead lefties? Not so much.
I don't think she did change. That's my point.
I'm sure if you assure us that you're quickly approaching death we can arrange for favorable tax treatment for you as well.
PS:CHRISTFAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!
Re: Palin's Buttwipe,
And for statist fucks like you, it's the other way around.
Truth hurts you, OM.
Why not both, Mr. Libertarian?
Because it doesn't conform to the contrived dichotomy between socons on the one hand and Stalinistas on the other, and therefore TEAM PURPLE can't possibly acknowledge equality in liberty. Instead we get political patronage and special-interest politics, and the gradual winnowing of everybody's freedoms.
What's funny is how you attack her personally for pointing out the shortcomings of progressive paradise.
Not funny in a haha way, funny in a look at that pathetic bitter progtard way.
Palin's Buttplug|2.13.14 @ 7:37PM|#
"She is a bitter old woman with Multiple Sclerosis. I will give her a break."
So it's NOT shoe polish? Shit, then.
They won't let him sniff glue anymore. So he has to do something.
They won't let him sniff glue anymore. So he has to do something.
I'm guessing they will but that it's lost its effect.
That, and they kept running out of glue and someone was always having to cut open PBs nostrils.
The one note moron is back for another public Dem felate job.
It s good to have shreek come around us just how shockingly hideous progs actually are.
And remember retards don't rule the night. And whatever you do don't make eyes contact with them or let them think you have cake.
I will always be smarter than you, John. It has always been so and will never stop being so.
And retards always think they are smart. Just back away and give them what they want. They are not cuddly like they are in the movies.
"Just back away and give them what they want."
Unless the want to go to the zoo:

All evidence to the contrary.
But don't believe it? Just ask him. He'll tell you how smart he is.
Yes shreek, you are so much smarter than anyone here. You are a genius. Anyone who doesnt believe that can just ask you, right?
It is also true that the majority of involuntarily committed mental patients are actually the only sane people around. Just ask 'em.
I don't really like John, not that he gives a shit. I agree with him only somewhat more often than not. And he can't spell.
But I respect John, and John is WAY more intelligent than you. It's not even close.
You have failed three times in this thread.

"You have failed three times in this thread."
So you can't count, either.
The cock crowed three times!

because smart people always brag how smart they are... not.
"I will always be smarter than you, John. It has always been so and will never stop being so."
LOL
I went to that private school there - nice place.
But didn't they outlaw public smoking there? (I'm picturing that cop in Footloose taking away your smokes.)
And of course everyone knows that Bieber kid is a little you-know-what (who makes excruciating bubble gum pop). But didn't they show up at his house with a battering ram? (Was it at the back door too?) And felony egging? Good thing there was no tp-ing involved: there may be a mandatory minimum for that now.
Governor Brown (insert the usual something about his aura smiling here) has banned the sale of liquor from self-checkouts and bartending while gloveless is now a punishable offense. I live in the northeast part of the state and even this place has seemingly started losing its mind. (You think you can get away from plastic bag bans living in the woods but alas.)
X was a great band though.
How dare this woman optimize her own finances and move to a different state?
HOW DARE SHE??
Sounds like menopause is gripping her lifeless form.

OT, but WaPo's Dana Milbank continues to defend reporting on Paul lawsuit
Mattie Fein has routinely been identified as Bruce Fein's spokeswoman in media reports, and e-mails I sent to Bruce Fein this week were answered by Mattie Fein, who again identified herself as his spokeswoman and who relayed information between Bruce Fein and me. The e-mails, which I was authorized to publish, also show that Bruce Fein was angry about the way he had been treated by Paul and Cuccinelli and was seeking payment from Paul's political action committee as late as Wednesday.
In a telephone conversation Thursday evening, Cuccinelli, joined by Bruce Fein, repeated that Mattie Fein was "not authorized" to speak for Bruce Fein, and said "Mattie sent emails in his name from his account." But Bruce Fein confirmed on the call that he had, in fact, written one of the two emails forwarded to me from his account, in which he complained about the way he was treated by the Paul team and requested payment. "I was disgruntled with some elements," he said.
So basically the ex-wife fucked things up by flying off the handle at Cuccinelli in emails and then giving them to a reporter.
What does any of this have to do with the NSA? Nothing, but we can't expect Milbank to give a shit about freedom.
It only matters in the sense that Milbank espouses "correct" thinking, in line with WaPo's political outlook. The fact that he has now doubled down on his original story says more about that, than the veracity of his original claims.
Seriously what the fuck is that half wit talking about?
I think you meant to respond to Shriek.
When you lose the Punk community...
Andrew Wilkow is not surprised.

Anyhoo, Plasmids For Everyman:
http://arstechnica.com/science.....-plasmids/
The first section is rough going as it is a mix of explaining the Bioshock story premise and poor understanding of both Objectivism and libertarianism.
Free from the "oppressions" of politics, religion, and society, the citizens of Rapture could indulge in their artistic, scientific, and commercial pursuits.
The absence of ethical, legal, and sociological barriers within Rapture
Full stop. Libertarianism is at its heart an ethical barrier against statist to justify their common aggressions against the public such as mass murder which they tend to indulge in with impunity when left unchecked. That's a far fairer assessment of them than their descriptions of us will ever be.
But, that aside, its an interesting article.
"Rapture" is the ultimate in slavery/capture. Who in any coherent state would espouse such a doctrine of fealty?
Nothing says coherent state like screaming and throwing shit.
Who in any coherent state would espouse such a doctrine of fealty?
Ahh! My question was quickly answered!
Don't talk to it. Don't you see it has nothing else to live for?
Purple monkey dishwasher! Honey lumber?
Who in any coherent state would espouse such a doctrine of fealty?
There you go shreeky....put it back in your mouth.
/soros
Andrew Ryan wasn't an asshole insofar as he was an Objectivist. He was an asshole insofar as he was a tyrant who abandoned his principles.
I should have mentioned the article is about the science of plasmids. The political stuff is merely an aside.
I was surprised at the lack of Derp in the comments. Lately, every time I read ars, it's more like Luddite Technicha.
For a magazine called Technica...
Maybe I just pick the wrong articles.
I was too.
Oh, there's our budding bio-ethicist. Bet he wants to have a "conversation".
But he hides 'I want to sacrifice you to the Greater Good so well'!
Oh, and a budding fascist!
Funny how improving society is equated with limiting populations and enforcing conformity instead of expanding the autonomy and prosperity of the individuals who comprise that society for the socialist. Not so much funny as needing to be kept in check.
The goals for social improvement through the use of technologies like plasmids I would advance:
Longevity and improved health
Improving intelligence and autodidact learning abilities
That's not going to get you a mile high pile of skulls like that guy's ideas if put into practice, but I think it adds up to some modest value in social improvement.
Your comments are interesting, and I will try to read the article referred to here. But before I do, I'd like to sound you out on something. To quote you, "... limiting populations and enforcing conformity instead of expanding the autonomy and prosperity of the individuals who comprise that society for the socialist," isn't that the agenda of green revolutionary guy Norman Borlaug? I thought Borlaug was held in high esteem in these pages.
Does he say how he proposes to 'get people' to do that?
I bet I can guess.
From the comments: I think that we have to be very careful about assuming that any stretch of DNA is non-functional.
I've always pictured those unused bits looking something like this:
/* homo_sapien_erectus(gender, build, eye color, hair color, etc.)
*\
homo_sapien_sapien(gender, build, eye color, hair color, etc.)
Yeah, you might want to be careful about removing the comments in that coding.
I'm a coder, and I don't think I've ever sperged that hard.
Thanks! I usually keep it in check.
Hah, I thought that was part of the comment.
And if I did, I'd do it with object or with callbacks and aspect-oriented logging/restful API/debug console
/sperging
You should see my code (not that I write much). I comment out the opening and closing braces in Perl to make certain I've paired them all properly. 😐
You need a syntax highlighting editor. Or use the % key to bounce between open/close braces in vi.
Perl is my weapon of choice. So is Vim.
Notepad++ is my daily fix. I can write it up and test with Eclipse and VC++ compile tools near simultaneously. I even use it here when I indulge in HTML given the autotagging module works wonderfully, except when the squirrels are circle jerking.
Also, Andrew Ryan is characterized as such because Ken Levine, though a super smart, talented, even nice guy according to some, is a wee bit confused on the political philosophy.
Before I played it, it was described to me as a "take that!" to Objectivism.
Then I played it, and was like "...how?"
Yeah, it is really more complicated then just an assassine attack on Objectivism and that is why I'm very tepid in my criticism. Its really worth a much longer reply than what I put forth. Bioshock:Infinity is really what Levine wanted to do and had a game design plan for, but due to limitations in the technology at the time first generation shaders were introduced he had to accommodate. Real time lighting was still dependent on portal rendering where large areas are not technically feasible. This is why Doom3 (the incredible Far Cry mixed it up with terrain being rendered with HD lightmaps and interiors with dynamic lighting) is a corridor shooter. It was the era before shadow mapping made it possible to have larger environments rendered at a decent frame rate.
As he and his team were working out what they had to do they made design decisions where the description of Objectivism is compromised for the sake of drama. This could have been avoided altogether if the villainess from the second game was introduced here. she is the worm in the society that corrupts the rest.
A poor mix of explaining the Bioshock story and not understanding what a plasmid actually is. Or he wouldn't have brought Bioshock up at all.
Gotta give those Objectivists credit, there is no false advertising in the word. They are objective.
But I thought this was weird: "The absence of ethical, legal, and sociological barriers within Rapture
Full stop. Libertarianism is at its heart an ethical barrier..."
A barrierless barrier seems to come straight outta eastern mysticism, especially western takes on it, or for that matter, Star Wars mysticism. I thought Objectivists went to great pains to distance themselves from any such connections.
Didnt a couple of sports guys get slapped down for saying this very thing? I see PB has some serious butt hurt there....good. There is more to come. What is happening in Ca is coming soon to a state near you. I just wonder how far it has to go before people fight back.
I used to listen to a lot of rock from the 60's and 70's, but some time in my 30's I started really listening to the lyrics and realized most of those fuckers were budding commies.
Phil Micolaon said you would be stupid to live in California I think.
Micolaon? He's the bowler, right?
...Micolaon
This is what happens when you engage Bowel Obstruction.....you shed IQ points!
Phil Mickleson I Believe.
"Phil Mickleson I Believe."
Had a discussion about this. He's clammed up totally, but I wonder how long he'll "live" in CA?
He can afford another address, the same way as the lefty H-wood types. I have a strong suspicion Redford spends 6-months and, oh, 4 days at the Idaho address.
Had a discussion about this. He's clammed up totally, but I wonder how long he'll "live" in CA?
He was pretty chatty about the topic initially. I imagine someone made a call to his business manager regarding his endorsement deals.
..That's a nice supplemental income stream you've got there...be a shame if something were to happen to it....
"He was pretty chatty about the topic initially. I imagine someone made a call to his business manager regarding his endorsement deals."
Absolutely!
The guy is one of the 'faces' of golf; he's always a good interview, never gripes about the weather or the courses, etc. Jimmy Johnson with a golf club.
He EARNS that endorsement money, and I'm sure you won't hear a word about it even after he starts spending that 6-months-plus at another address.
Sounds like she's set. She just needs to buy a clock on Hollywood Blvd.
Not a single joke about how she had to leave Los Angeles?
I'd be more like, she looks at California now and goes "This was supposed to be the new world!"
Anyway, as a lifelong Texan, we'd love to have her. 🙂
I'm old enough to have lived through several migrations from other states during periods of economic downturn.
There are a couple of rules to being welcomed when the intrastate immigrants get here.
1. We don't care how they did IT where you come from. That's the reason you had to leave your home and move here.
2. Don't bring you politics with you. If enough of you bring your politics with you you will replicate the same shithole you fled.
Other than that, all are welcome to come and assimilate. Texas was born of Europeans and Mexicans who wanted a better way of life.
Texas was born of Europeans and Mexicans who wanted a better way of life.
And former slaves
Exene is a friend of a friend and he tells me that she has really gone off the deep end in the last couple of years.
Assuming that either you and/or somebody in this chain of friends also lives in CA I would like to better understand what "off the deep end" means in this context. Since to a lot of CA residents loosing their belief in the CA ideal is considered pretty much going off the reservation I would be interested to hear what change(s) have been observed.
You summed it up nicely.
It's possible her progressive friends find her disillusionment with the Fascist turn of California over the last 20 years to be... disturbing.
Such people are not confined to hospitals in CA. Yet.
It's really only a matter of time before Texas turns blue, thanks to all the immigration from California (not to mention over the border).
And then it will become California 2.0. Where will people flee to then?
It never occurs to them that they should change the policies of the place they are freeing from, rather than bring their policies with them and ruining the place they move to...
No it's not, Texas is already 40% hispanic and the state is still deep red. Hispanics here, especially multi-generational, are more conservative than nationwide. Funnily enough they didn't exit-poll Texas in 2012, but did exit-poll California. I wonder how leaving out the 2nd biggest state that happens to be red while including the largest state, that happens to be blue, skewed all those demographic assumptions people were crowing about. Not just hispanics, but young people as well.
/\/\/\This/\/\/\ is the zombie apocalypse in reality. It isn't a viral infection but a political one. And it could end in the destruction of the human race just as certainly, if not as quickly. And, yes, they want to eat your brains.
It never occurs to them that they should change the policies of the place they are freeing from, rather than bring their policies with them and ruining the place they move to...
The problem is California just got too corrupt. It wasn't the progressivism, the hard-lefty politics, it was just a bad element that abused the system. This time, progressivism and socialism (in a moderate amount) will do the trick. This time.
"It never occurs to them that they should change the policies of the place they are freeing from, rather than bring their policies with them and ruining the place they move to..."
That was barely possible say 5 years back. Now there is little option to leaving, or sticking it out and waiting for the fiscal disaster.
Some 5 years ago, CA selected a "non-partisan" agency to redistrict the entire state. Somehow, the "non-partisan" group all voted D, and the redistricting shows that.
CA is effectively a one-party state at least as strongly as, oh, the USSR was.
Whatever. I'll believe it when I see the Texas voters repeal that anti-gay-marriage amendment, or decriminalize pot. (That first one, the SCOTUS might end up doing the dirty work for them.)
Be careful about your Facebook comments, Exene. They might throw you in jail, let you get molested, misrepresent your posts to the grand jury, and basically totally overreact to a non-threat.

Wow. Who woulda thunk it. A piece on Reason extolling the virtues of a Democratic Governor who has balanced the budget, among other great things I guess.
LOL JackAss graduated from the Winston Smith School of Reality Revision.
She left CA because it is a lefty police state of regulations and taxes and fees...guess that part had to be sent down the memory hole.
I still cannot bring myself to indulge the notion that leftoidism is "liberal".
Well, if her opinion is valid on guns and the California police, then I guess it must also be valid on the great job Brown is doing.
Or are we just selecting what she is brilliant about?
You muddy your waters to make them look deep. A correct judgment in one instance does not necessitate that she is correct in all others, idiot.
Or is she moving to Texas because Brown is allegedly doing such a great job in Commiefornia? Escaping a leftoid police state open libraries on sunday.
'A piece on Reason extolling the virtues of a Democratic Governor who has 8scammed suckers*, among other great things I guess.'

Well, Exene, I'm not much a punk fan, but I'll give your music a listen since you're bright enough to know that which you're seeing is what it is.
