Which had, of course, prompted even more protests

A statement on the website of the beleaguered Ukrainian president says he has agreed to scrap harsh anti-protest legislation that sparked violent clashes.

The statement came after a meeting between President Viktor Yanukovych and top opposition figures late Monday.

The statement also said one of leaders, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has rejected Yanukovych's offer to become prime minister.
