The price of the omnibus spending bill passed by Congress this week comes to $3 million per word.
And we're not even getting our money's worth, Congress didn't read one of them.
Good evening.
It's still afternoon where it counts.
Try and class up the joint a little and this is the snark I get. Pft.
Let me finish.
Where it counts is in my pants.
Hmm. Still morning here, apparently.
You get the Snark you deserve, damnit.
Just for you, Snark
You people are incorrigible.
/raises hands in frustration.
Yale University blocked access to a student-run website evaluating its courses after failing to compel the students to take it down.
Next step is for Yale to get that federal prosecutor who got Swartz to kill himself on the case.
Also, Yale students don't have data plans on their iPhones?
TOR enables dissidents to communicate without a despotic government cracking down on them. And lets rich Yale students rate their professors.
Totally awesome.
These kids will never make it into the secret society.
No one forced that guy to kill himself.
You betcha.
A Japanese soldier who fought in World War 2 and remained in a jungle in the Philippines until 1974 died at the age of 91.
What drives a person to do that?
Honor!
Plenty of people seem to like the Philippines. I don't know what you have against it.
Not a big fan of the food, to be honest.
Yeah, I prefer human fetus. More stem cells.
My taste buds love it, but my gallbladder has a sad whenever I have it.
I should make chicken adobo this weekend! My Flip coworker says it's "not bad for a white guy"
My new years resolution was to learn how to make filipino dishes (my wife never makes any and the trips to her parent's place isn't often enough). I tried my hand at Pancit and it was shit, utter shit. But this is how we learn, I guess.
Adobo seems easy enough though, so that's next.
Not so much the Philipines part, but the jungle part. Seems like it would be 30 years of Malaria.
And insect bites.
Loyalty and duty to the Emperor. Banzai!
That and he didn't believe the war was over and efforts to convince him otherwise were tricks by the Americans.
What drives a person to do that?
When he left for the war his wife was really pissed at him....wanted to give her a little more time to cool down.
She caught him with a schoolgirl?
Yes, and he was wearing his octopus costume.
My guess he just found he liked living in the jungle and didn't want the war to end.
It's not that. He genuinely didn't believe the war was over. He wrote a book where he talked about the shock when he realized that the surrender news hadn't been american propaganda.
When his old CO told him that the war was actually over, he apparently was expecting some signal that the guy was playing a trick on the Americans, and then he realized that there was no trick, that his CO was on the level, and that he had been fighting for decades for no good purpose.
Sitting a billions of dollars of plundered gold will motivate you.
Jungle fever.
What drives a person to do that?
He was 91. I don't think he had much of a choice. It was his time.

His leader was a God.
A Japanese soldier who fought in World War 2 and remained in a jungle in the Philippines until 1974 died at the age of 91.
I wonder if there are any Soviet Subs still floating around not knowing the USSR collapsed
Awesome.
We have a President who thinks the New Deal worked.
Anything is possible.
In fairness, the majority of people do.
Even here in Canada when we learn about the Depression it's explained in a way that you can't believe the New Deal didn't work.
Canada
That is understandable. The Canucks think they won the War of 1812.
If they're floating, they're not doing it right.
I don't think Soviet submarines had the ability to be at sea for more than a couple months at a time. At the very least, you have to get food resupplied, at which point somebody would have probably let them know...
Somalia's Ministry of Commerce said it would not be responsible for the safety of tourists who did not register with it.
Somalia, you've changed, man. Ministries, indeed.
Somalia's Ministry of Commerce said it would not be responsible for the safety of tourists who did not register with it.
Or those who did, really.
The effect of today's technology on tomorrow's jobs will be immense?and no country is ready for it
This is not a repeat from the 19th century.
Imagine all the jobs we'll lose when we devastate or eliminate economic scarcity in consumer goods and drive down the price of everything from food to transportation! It'll be like what's happening to the publishing industry today--free books everywhere, vast stores of information available at the price of electrons flowing through fiber!
Break the power looms!
But thanks to the exponential rise in processing power and the ubiquity of digitised information ("big data"), computers are increasingly able to perform complicated tasks more cheaply and effectively than people.
Para Ingl?s, pulse uno.
Para mierda de toro de prensa el n?mero dos
47% of all jobs is a drop in the bucket compared to what industrialization did.
90% - 2% in agriculture.
Almost every single manufacturing process was reinvented. Artisans were made obsolete.
It would be shocking if we could even approach the level of disruption achieved back then.
Nudists say time spent in the buff boosts their body confidence.
Do some turn to nudity because they have terrible taste in clothes?
From what I've seen, it shouldn't.
Ah but remember, everyone else around them is nude too. That means they slowly realize "Oh Shit I'm not the only disgusting slob out there"
It's always disgusting. I went to the naked parade my freshman year at Berkeley, and never made that mistake again. This was in the days before eye bleach...
Somalia's Ministry of Commerce said it would not be responsible for the safety of tourists who did not register with it.
That's okay, they can just hire private security personnel. Libertopia, am I right?
Speedos vs shorts
What about those of us who prefer something in between?
Then you wan this.
No, this.
Well now I know Warty's Ebay ID.
I'll never understand why a grown-assed man is appropriately mocked for wearing bedazzled Ed Hardy shirts, but it's considered acceptable for the same "man" to wear swim "shorts" that hit mid-calf.
Also, square cuts ftw.
Blame the rise of the fit professional. Slacks cause weird bald patches on the thighs of guys without stick legs. long shorts are easier than shaving your legs.
Hey, Ed -- Supreme Court link is wrong.
All of the links are wrong, since they link to 24/7 and not to the source articles.
Well said.
Eh, anything that gets reason more money is fine with me. I'd rather have a minor inconvenience every so often then have them go out of business.
Agreed. Integrity is for suckers.
Spain breezes into record books as wind power becomes main source of energy
"Breezes"...boo.
If only the world could be more like the utopia they know in Spain.
Plus they don't have to worry about the massive eagle problem that afflicts the United States.
I'm sure that shifting to huge amounts of wind power has nothing to do with this.
My boss went to Germany on a trade mission last month. In Germany, solar panels are subsidized to the point that if you buy them, you make a profit no matter what. That incentive is so strong that Germans will even put them on north-facing rooftops.
Oh, the and even though the average German uses half the electricity as the average American, their monthly bills are about the same.
A bit old, but still...

As long as it's not 1.21 gigawatts, cause then we'd all be in trouble
No man, it's cool, they don't know from 88 miles per hour, they're all metricked up over there.
Yes, you can have a Chinese girlfriend and still be racist.
a niggling obstacle is the continued reluctance of black and minority ethnic (BME) communities to vote Tory.
"Niggling"?
RACIST!
Isn't it possible those minority communities are behaving in a racist manner by refusing to vote for the party that primarily consists of white people?
Why is assuming racism in the opposite direction not sound?
Also, isn't the term 'minority community' itself racist? No one says 'the white community.' So white people are capable of individuality but minority groups must always be part of a tribe?
Man! Why is the Guardian so racist?
I would think more black people would be offended by "Black Community". Do they all have to have pretty much the same opinions?
Sounds like a sort of intellectual slavery to me.
No one says 'the white community.'
The correct term is "racists."
I would assume that every party in the UK is primarily composed of white people
Well, it is just like here in the US, duh. If you were white and didn't vote for Obama you were racist. If you are black and would never vote for a white person under any circumstances, never mind.
That's the definition of racism. Don't go trying to redefine words on lefties; that's their game.
Because amongst the properly educated, non-white people can't be racist.
A liberal (who was gay) colleague of mine back when I was working at the banks once told me after I asked him a question on race 'Yes. chances are you're racist and don't know it.'
I can be a killer, a rapist, even a unicorn in their world.
It's insane how they think.
It's possible for you to be a racist and not know it but it's impossible for them to be racist and not know it.
Progressives are possessed of a pure and perfect self-awareness that the rest of us simply can never achieve.
"I know you better than you know yourself."
Argo know yourself!
Liberals don't tend to appeal to original sin, so they gotta get you feeling guilty, just like they do, somehow.
Joseph McCarthy himself never hallucinated Communists to 1/10th the degree that modern progs see racists.
From the link:
Can you notice the difference between a black or Chinese girlfriend and a woman in full veil? Hint: the concept of racism doesn't apply to one of them.
So, like, when you, like, see a cop pull up behind you, and like, put on his flashing lights and stuff, if you like get all nervous and stuff you're a racist against, like, cops?

"Remember that this first and foremost is a 13 year old girl," her uncle, Joseph Gordon, said. "And it does not matter the colour of her skin. So before you throw a hateful comment at her, remember that this is somebody's child and her safety comes first above all things."
I'm fine with that--but people also shouldn't use kids as human shields when pushing a political message.
If your kid is willing to stick their neck out for a cause, you better be sure they're prepared for the lumps they'll inevitably take.
That's what children are FOR.
Got Land? Thank an Indian
Why? Did they make it?
They sure didn't improve it.
Not true. They used controlled burning to create much of the great plains.
And they got rid of all that annoying Pleistocene megafauna.
I miss the sabertooth pussies and giant beaver....
....
Are we sure that the Pleistocene was not just made up bullshit?
The fossils do not lie.
Overweight and obese adults who drink diet pop also tend to eat more calories each day from food, a finding that hints at how relying on diet beverages for weight loss could be a disservice.
Ugh, no kidding. I've seen quite a few large people order the biggest combo meal they can get with a diet Coke.
Why the hell not? If you don't mind diet, why have the extra calories?
The point is people order the larger meal, getting a few hundred extra calories, thinking they offset that with the diet soda, which saved them 70. If you just like the taste of diet, hey, go for it.
Could be an enabler, but it's speculative. Maybe these are relatively intelligent fat people who know they know that they'd be even fatter if they ordered the full-calorie coke. Their point of compromise may be weighing 280 rather than 300.
A large soda is a damn sight more than 70 calories.
Yeah, I thought your average 12 oz can was 100.
Weren't there a studies a few years ago showing that diet soda jacked up insulin levels just like regular soda did, artificially lowered blood sugar and made people peckish?
I'd like to see those studies. I drink a lot of diet soda. If it's raising my insulin just like regular, what's the point? If I can switch to coffee and water and lose weight, I will.
I think they may have been rooted in this
Thanks

It turns out dogs may not have evolved from gray wolves
A study in the current issue of PLoS Genetics suggests that, instead, dogs and gray wolves share a common ancestor in an extinct wolf lineage that lived thousands of years ago.
An international team of researchers generated genome sequences from three gray wolves ? one each from China, Croatia, and Israel, the three countries where dogs are believed to have originated. They then sequenced the genome of a basenji dog from central Africa and a dingo from Australia. Both the regions have been historically isolated from wolf populations, according to a press release by The University of Chicago Medical Center.
Analysis of these genomes from the wolves and the dogs showed that the dogs were more closely related to each other than they were to the wolves. The wolves, too, were closely related to each other than to the dogs.
Additionally, the scientists did not see a clear evidence linking dogs to any of the living wolves that were sampled.
"One possibility is there may have been other wolf lineages that these dogs diverged from that then went extinct," said John Novembre, associate professor in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago and a senior author on the study.
Does it matter if they can interbreed?
Archaeologists are having a pissing match. If dogs descended from a common ancestor with the gray wolf, then it means that dogs split off from wolves during the hunter/gatherer stage of human developmentand before agriculture which screws up the narrative for why dogs became dogs.
Dogs became dogs because dogs are wolves on welfare.
+1
It goes against the experiments of the blue fox by the Russians, too. When they attempted to domesticate the blue fox they found that diversity of color, size and shape was a side-effect.
Opps, silver fox not blue.

Norman... Is That You?
This is a silver fox.
If humans bread foxes specifically for friendliness to humans I have the funny feeling that those humans confused color size and shape with friendliness.
A cute calico cat is much "friendlier" to pet then some drab tabby even if the two had identical temperaments.
which screws up the narrative for why dogs became dogs.
What? What the hell narrative says they became domesticated after agriculture?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.....mestic_dog
Certain wolf-like behaviors, such as the regurgitation of partially digested food for the young, have also disappeared.
I am calling bullshit on this as well. I don't know how many times I have seen a dog walk up and vomit on the floor then look at me like it was giving me a present.
No, its was *laughing* at you.
Go on
Yeeeeah, that's right
clean up my sick you dirty little man you.
I was a kid...I didn't clean up anything.
dogs and gray wolves share a common ancestor in an extinct wolf lineage that lived thousands of years ago.
/facepalm
In other news Germans and French people did not evolve from Caucasians but in fact evolved from a common ancestor 1000s of years ago.
What difference does it make at this point?
Researchers suggest the feeling of a "sixth sense" could be the result of the inability to articulate subtle changes our vision systems pick up on.
I know the public seemed to have an inability to articulate how subtlely bad M Night Shyamalan movies were until it was too late.
Of course, the sixth sense is notorious for triggering in the dark, or for things that happen outside the visual field.
My understanding is that the eyes are actually linked to both the brain and the brain-stem. That is why some people that are totally blind because of injury to the brain, can duck a punch they do not see. Saw it on Nova or some such thing. It explains blind Kung Foo masters.
The Force is within you.

And after that, "How dare he ask me if I mind if he speaks to me in a sexual manner"

So in other words he broke femminist law - 'don't hit on me if I don't find you attractive'.

No, they meant the (moving) dark side. It's a boring/trivial description of the color of the light reflected off the dark side after being reflected off the Earth.

Do they have a big tank at the station to see if they float? Or is the test done down at the river?
A scale, fist. If we weigh more than a duck, then we're made of wood. And therefore...?
I don't remember, but I think floating is the bad one. If you drown then you're straight and therefore free to go.
Hmm. I do float surprisingly well.
Yeah, I am an okay swimmer but water is one of my three fears. I don't trust it. So I envy you your- HEY WAIT A MINUTE HE FLOATS GET HIM!

As amazingly sick as the law is to begin with, I've been nothing less than nauseated at how quickly and dramatically it's been put into effect. This shit is awful.
Thanks, hon. It is pretty disheartening.
Yeah. This law seriously puts a crimp in my willingness to go rescue a coworker/friend from the Nigerian romance scam she left to go consummate a few days ago.
Had they passed this law a few days earlier I might have been able to stop her. She really could not comprehend that their morals could be radically different from her own. Rounding up homos and beating them to find more homos might have been visceral enough to shake her out of that.
"Yeah. This law seriously puts a crimp in my willingness to go rescue a coworker/friend from the Nigerian romance scam she left to go consummate a few days ago."
Wait, what? That's dumb either way, but is she straight or lesbian (or bisexual)?
Straight. I was jokingly looking forward to the rescue mission as of a few weeks ago because when do you have a good reason to go to Nigeria? But now I am not.
She went full retard even admitting (and justifying) that his passport was fake so we don't have a legal document to track him by if she doesn't check in (which she hasn't).
What is this girl's IQ? Seriously, how can she be this naive and/or stupid?
She isn't dumb, she's in her late 40s, is overweight and has been a single mom for most of her life, and incredibly capable of self-delusion. She came up with some very thorough mental contortions to make this seem like a reasonable thing to do.
When she first jumped back into the dating pool on Christian Mingle, she got scammed by an African guy out of some money, but he treated her like a princess in the process and I think that broke something inside of her, now she's completely irrational on the romance front and feels like she doesn't deserve anything less than being treated like a princess even if it's completely fictitious.
When she first jumped back into the dating pool on Christian Mingle, she got scammed by an African guy out of some money,
I think God's saying He doesn't have a match for her.
Sadly "God has a plan" factored into her willingness to go.

She's at risk of not just heartbreak and bankruptcy, but of losing her life. Those Nigerian scammers often kill people.
Friends, family and coworkers tried to impress that fact on her, but by believing this guy could be a scammer she felt we were saying she wasn't deserving of having someone fall in love with her. At that point we backed away because we didn't want her to completely isolate herself, which was the direction things were heading.
Well, if she's a co-worker, when she doesn't return, maybe you can get her red stapler.
Good to know. Always wanted to respond with a 'fuck off asshole.'
In fact, I wonder if anyone has.
And most particularly do not mention anything about US evangelicals lobbying for those laws.
Well, this is getting worse, in a predictable way.
Shit like this is why I blow my stack at progs proclaiming that some hillbillies building a survival camp in the woods are inherently more dangerous than our benevolent government LEO institutions.

There was an io9 article about sex with robots written by one of the ftb morons. This was linked to in the comments:
Feminists will never let sexbots happen. Not as long as they have a single lobbying arm in existence.
"Not tonight, EPIC LOVEMASTER, upgrades in progress."
But many feminists already have a primitive sexbot in their nightstand drawer....
That's different (for a reason they can't articulate). Also, apparently a disembodied male part isn't bad like a disembodied female part.
Like gay porn, disembodied female parts say that women aren't needed for sex.
*plus* they have the outrage advantage of users objectifying women and treating them like pieces of meat.
Those vibrators? They're needed because you men don't care enough about your partner on a personal level to properly please them.
Gee maybe if you feminists would shut your yaps and actually consent guys wouldn't prefer robots
We just won't go into the fact that Feminists do not want enthusiastic consent, they want to be able to revoke consent after the fact
Feminists will never let sexbots happen.
They already hate any sexuality in video games that men might find stimulating.
I remember in Dust 514 the feminists put on a protest because the women avatars walked too sexy.
CCP (Dust 514 developer) capitulated so now the women avatars walk like chimps with hemorrhoids.

Stand Your Ground is simply and transparently a catalyst for selling more guns and giving the buyers something to do with them -- all in the ironical name of preventing gun violence. The very existence of this concealed-carry-Stand-Your-Ground Brundlefly has helped to breed a culture that encourages and even glorifies this inexcusable behavior as somehow dutiful and patriotic.
Reeves and so many others exist in a bubble of hubris, anger and entitlement. Reeves obviously felt as though he was entitled to, as a God-given right, carry a loaded firearm into a movie theater. The possession of that weapon provided him with the 'roid-rage hubris to allegedly instigate a fight, and the existence of Stand Your Ground provided a legal framework in which he could apparently end that fight by discharging his weapon.
In a broader sense, and feeding this sense of entitlement, the gun lobby and the anti-Obama conservative entertainment complex have collectively fabricated a climate of defiant anger in the face of a president who they believe hates white people, hates the Constitution and is clinically obsessed with persecuting anyone who clings to their guns and Christian faith.
His impotent rage warms my heart.
He didn't shoot Obama's son. So it is unlikely to work.
He can also claim that a dog did it, it doesn't mean that he will be successful. Just that he'll get his administrative hearing. Probably in front of the same judge who denied him bail.
"the anti-Obama conservative entertainment complex"
WTF??
I think that's housed in a van down by the river.
NAACP gun buyback spent about $40,000, ran out of money, private citizens managed to buy some guns.
I can't believe they got people to part with anything but rusted out junk for $10-$100 - the max payout.
I can't believe they got people to part with anything but rusted out junk for $10-$100
Poor people with criminal parent child or spouse in jail who left their unregistered guns in the house.
People also still use silver quarters and half dollars...most likely they got the coins from a family members collection and simply thought that the silver was spare change.
I don't know, I'd wonder if a pawn shop or a local criminal might not offer them more.
I have given books to goodwill just to get them out of the house and only later figured out that I could have sold many of them online or to Hastings or to Powells
Why can you not believe this? If the NAACP didn't take names from the sellers, it's a nice easy way to get rid of a murder weapon.
Actually, the NAACP wasn't taking the guns, you pulled into the parking lot and local law enforcement took it out of your vehicle.
So, a BALLSY way to get rid of a murder weapon.

Tea Party, Other Conservative Groups Rev Up to Defend Anti-Immigrant Nebraska City Law
"A local organization has formed to campaign against repealing the housing portions of Fremont's illegal immigrant ordinance.
E-Verify portions of the ordinance have been enacted. Portions requiring renters to acquire occupancy licenses from the Fremont Police Department, however, were suspended as they worked their way through court challenges.
Our Vote Should Count enlisted the help of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the Tea Party Patriots, True The Vote, and other national organizations, including a Washington, D.C.-based analyst and an Omaha media consultant, to put together a media campaign that will use social media, print media, flyers and canvassing to get out their message."

He did a creepy guest turn on L&O: Criminal intent as well.
I'm sure he was good in Logan's Run, but pretty much all I remember from that flick is Jenny Agutter's legs.
The interesting consequences of that: The Germans decided it was too expensive for the results, and didn't develop a long-range bomber force for WWII. The Brits, though, were rather traumatized and built lots of long-range bombers that went on to destroy much of Germany.
It's interesting the different conclusions that militaries take away from the same events.
The whole "we will destroy the enemies morale through strategic bombing. Our citizens will never let their morale be destroyed by strategic bombing." oxymoron has always puzzled me. I guess it's "our civilians are tougher than their civilians."
The Nazis didn't think they'd receive much strategic bombing. They thought they'd win a relatively short war with a fine army and good close air support, and that their fighters and AA artillery would protect them from bombers. For a while they were right, too.
Gizmodo/Valleywag: Startup Makes App to Help People Evade Traffic Laws Parking Enforcement
The small group here would be the beta testers... so it isn't a permanently exclusive club, just one while they're working the kinks out.
As an LA resident who has used SF public transit a few times, I'm left scratching my head at what bolstering is needed in SF. What's not confusing is that the author has a bad case of the self-righteousness and should probably cut that out.
But the EPA allowing left-wing groups to evade the laws everyone else is subject to is completely irrelevant to Gawker.
Valleywag is the worst of the worst when it comes to Gawker (and that's saying something). They reacted with glee when one of Google's buses got attacked, and then reacted with outrage when Google hired private guards in response.
SF public transit is inadequate in large part because of the unions. Only in recent years was it revealed that MUNI drivers had it in their contract that (IIRC) 10 times a year they were allowed to simply not show up for work without so much as a telephone warning. These were called "miss-outs," and made it damn hard to make the busses run on time. Public outcry got that little benefit removed from the next contract.
Somalia's Ministry of Commerce said it would not be responsible for the safety of tourists who did not register with it...
...while tourists who do register will immediately be turned over to pirates to be ransomed."
Who takes a vacation to Somalia?
All the cool libertarians?
That was my first question too.
It is a wonderful place to go on a Human Safari?
Detroiters?
If they could afford to visit Somalia they would've moved away already.
Why would Detroiters travel 5000 miles to see something they can see a couple blocks away?
For the same reason anyone takes a vacation: Home away from home with warmer temps in the winter
Khat.
New Israeli Abortion Law Condemned by SoCon
"On December 30, the State of Israel announced that beginning in 2014, the government would pay for pay for all abortions performed on women between the ages of 20 and 33, without exception and without regard to reason.
American pro-life and pro-family groups responded to the December announcement with little comment or condemnation. Lifesitenews.com chose to run an anodyne report on the policy change, but not editorialize. The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), whose mission is to "defend life and family at international institutions and to publicize the debate," had nothing to say. The same was true for National Right to Life, Priests for Life, the American Life League and most others.
American taxpayers should not be put in the position of underwriting the culture of death. But if that's true of Obamacare ? and it is ? then shouldn't it be true for American foreign aid? Israel receives about $3 billion each year from American taxpayers. About 74% of that is returned to the United States in the form of contracts with American weapons manufacturers. But given the fungible nature of money, and since Israel would buy weapons with money from its own treasury in the absence of aid, the current arrangement amounts to American funding of Israeli abortions."

In more PBS news, for my fellow Neko Case fans, she was on last week's Austin City Limits in the second half hour.
Krugman slams Hollande for...not being socialist enough
Callous, wrongheaded conservatives have been driving policy, but they have been abetted and enabled by spineless, muddleheaded politicians on the moderate left.
Hollande is part of the 'moderate left' in Krugabe's imagination.
It's true that the latest data show France failing to share in Europe's general uptick. Most observers, including the International Monetary Fund, attribute this recent weakness largely to austerity policies. But now Mr. Hollande has spoken up about his plans to change France's course...
For Mr. Hollande, in announcing his intention to reduce taxes on businesses while cutting (unspecified) spending to offset the cost, declared, "It is upon supply that we need to act," and he further declared that "supply actually creates demand."
Oh, boy. That echoes, almost verbatim, the long-debunked fallacy known as Say's Law ? the claim that overall shortfalls in demand can't happen, because people have to spend their income on something. This just isn't true, and it's very much not true as a practical matter at the beginning of 2014. All the evidence says that France is awash in productive resources, both labor and capital, that are sitting idle because demand is inadequate. For proof, one need only look at inflation, which is sliding fast.
Clearly that 90% top tax rate just wasn't high enough.
Also, here's France's unemployment rate since 1980.
It's been over 6% the entire time, and the lowest unemployment rate since 1982 is 7.8%. Their unemployment is actually lower now than it was in the mid-90's.
That almost makes it seem like there's something resulting in high unemployment which has been doing so consistently since 1980. It's not a lack of demand, moron.
So Detroit's real problem is its French ancestry?
He's got an article from the other day up which blames "austerity" for frances economic issues, and simultaneously claims that France is actually doing well.
Nothing of the sort is true, you rancid little turd. Deferred spending, aka saving (or as the socialists call it, hoarding) is still spending. And no amount of pump-priming and bubble creation is going to make up for the fact that a society that lacks savings will eventually reach a breaking point.
Hazlitt pointed out two generations ago that supply is demand, that "aggregate demand" isn't some magical stuff floating out in the universe, but that demand is simply a reflection of a person's ability and willingness to trade some good or service for another through the medium of money.
And yet here we are, 2+ generations later, still fencing the same old nonsensical Keynesian farts.
You have the nerve to slam Paul Krugman, a man who won a Nobel Prize for astrology?
Today I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Nobel Commemorative Prize in Economic Sciences (officially the Knarf Yenrab Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel). The 2014 prize is a $30 Red Lobster gift card.
The 2014 winner is Henry Hazlitt. And now Hazlitt is every bit as much a Nobel laureate as Paul Krugman.
Or Michael Mann.
It is worthwhile to remark that a product is no sooner created than it, from that instant, affords a market for other products to the full extent of its own value. When the producer has put the finishing hand to his product, he is most anxious to sell it immediately, lest its value should diminish in his hands. Nor is he less anxious to dispose of the money he may get for it; for the value of money is also perishable. But the only way of getting rid of money is in the purchase of some product or other. Thus the mere circumstance of creation of one product immediately opens a vent for other products.
I'm no expert on Say's Law, but I don't think that matches Krugtron's description.
I'm always amazed at this obsession with demand. If people don't want to spend their money on the overpriced labor and capital that's lying around to make things to sell which will then generate huge tax bills, that's suddenly a demand problem. The idea that individuals might make an informed choice on resource allocation based on incentives escapes Krugman, apparently.
Only TOP MEN like Krugman can possibly make informed choices.
Except at election time when suddenly the idiot masses are completely capable of analyzing complex issues to decide who should hold political office.
The problem is their informed choices benefit them individually. Didn't you know that the only valid choices were the ones which advanced the progressive agenda?
It's not austerity the problem.
It's their insane insistence on using unpressed olive oil that's killing them.
Kroooogman is a weirdo.
Holy shit. Why hasn't Krugabe moved to North Korea yet?

This being the Daily Beast, it also has the funniest comment I've seen in a long time:

Jezebel: Women more likely to feel patronized by visiting the doctor
Ever walk out of your doctor's office feeling guilty and gross? Recent studies suggest that's more likely to happen to women than men?even though it's a less effective doctoring tactic.
Quartz has the numbers, from two studies recently published in Basic and Applied Social Psychology. One surveyed students and found 26 percent of women said they'd been "shamed" by a doctor, mostly about sex, dental hygiene or weight. (Always with the flossing!) That's compared to 15 percent of men. Another, broader study found that fully 53 percent of women felt "guilt or shame" thanks to something their doctors had said, versus 38 percent of men.
Because it's so easy to bring up STDs even without knowing that you're sure to get a patronizing fucking lecture.
Maybe women are just more sensitive?
Researchers were also careful to note, though, that while doctors might be more likely to shame women, it could be that "women are likely to read situations differently than men, or more likely to pick up on a physician's subtle intent to shame." Maybe dudes are just blissfully oblivious, in other words.
Or women are just too sensitive. Damnit I'm a doctor, not a women's studies professor.
I'll admit I often feel gross and ashamed after leaving the doctor's office, but it's almost always because of that lovely, "Is anyone hurting you at home?" question they ask. You know what it's like to say "no" to that and have them give you the Larry David look like you're lying, because everyone is secretly getting the shit beat out of them by their partner?
Are you going to the doctor all bruised up after Ayn Rand approved rough sex? Because that might explain why you're getting those questions...
I refuse to even wait in the lobby for a girlfriend after shit like that and the pointed glances from the nurse. One girl I used to date a few years ago would say, "not as much as I'd like, but he's been busy at work".
The worst is the way I'm never expecting it, or never expecting the exact wording they're going to use, and I can tell the look of surprise on my face is being translated in their mind to a look of lying...
The only time I've ever been full force slapped was when a very liberal friend of mine said "my boyfriend doesn't hit me enough" with a load sigh. I responded to her with "All right there Ayn Rand" and she sat straight up, wound up and slapped me hard.
Totally worth it.
Word got out around my home bar about some of my proclivities, and I've been hearing versions of that from drunk frustrated women for the last 3 months. I had no idea there were that many guys who wouldn't do it at all.
I generally won't, much to my wife's chagrin.
I'll do some light mental domination if I am in the right mood which is fairly rare. Bondage I find to be absolutely boring (why they hell would I want to restrict her use of her hands, I expect her to be actively using them). But pain, nope sorry not really interested, I don't like it, I don't like the way it makes me feel, and honestly I don't like the way it makes me feel about her.
I honestly do not see the fascination with BDSM for the most part.

If you were a woman you would know they don't like to see you at all if you've had sex that recently.
But no.
Define "recently".
Since the Clinton administration.
I don't get that at least. But I get the "do you own any guns". I like my doctor. But she knows the answer to that is "none of your business" but has to ask it anyway.
"do you own any guns"
Only my five nosy doctor killing guns.
"Five nosy doctor" sounds like a really strange kung fu movie. "You cannot defeat my... clip board attack!"
Recent studies suggest that's more likely to happen to women than men
That is because women visit the doctor a shit load more then men do.
I have not seen a doctor in over 15 years...guess what? I have also not felt guilty and gross about going into a doctor's office for over 15 years.
Another, broader study found that fully 53 percent of women felt "guilt or shame" thanks to something their doctors had said, versus 38 percent of men.
This could well be simply because men are more resistant to feeling guilt or shame. After all, we are likely to develop resistance from being around women....
I am reasonably certain that no woman today could walk into a Dr's office and ask for advice on weight loss strategies with 2 arthritic knees and be told to "Suck it up"
Which were her words verbatim
So, because you're too much of a pussy (see what I did there?) to put up your hand and go 'doc, I don't wanna hear it' we're supposes to feel bad for your poor, poor, shamed self?
Intentional racism

HISD bans the use or race or ethnic groups as mascots or nicknames. This was targeted at the Lamar Redskins but somehow also includes these:
Rebels and Warriors?
If the Warrior mascot was a stereotypical Indian warrior, I can see why that would qualify. Not sure how a rebel qualifies as a racial or ethnic group.
Welch middle school should change their mascot to the Celts.
"Rebels" refers to the Confederate Southern American ethnic group:
http://voices.washingtonpost.c.....uther.html
"Warriors" refers to the ethnic groups that comes out and plays.
Funnily enough, Westbury is a majority black school.
Why not just keep the nickname and change their mascot to a Texian?
Columbine HS in Colorado uses Rebels, but their mascot is a minuteman.
If they just changed the mascot to a pale white guy who'd just been in the sun too long, "Redskin" would finally be kosher.
My guess is that since they were banning names that offended people they went ahead with 'Rebels' (remember there was some fuss about this with Ole Miss) even though it is not racial.
Warriors though, I cannot explain.

Houston man gives homeless beggar some change, is harassed by the police
Snider said he gave the man some change and drove off.
"I had no idea at all what was about to happen," said Snider.
After Snider pulled onto I-10, he said a police car with flashing lights and sirens pulled behind him.
Snider said he was shocked by what the police officer did next.
"He's screaming. He's yelling. He's telling me to get out of the car. He's telling me to put my hands on the hood," said Snider.
Snider said the officer pulled him out of the car, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a police car, as ten more police cars were also pulling up.
"They're like, 'We saw you downtown. We saw what you did,'" said Snider. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I gave a homeless man 75 cents.'"
Snider said the officer accused him of giving the man drugs. The officer asked to search Snider's car and Snider said he agreed.
The officer brought in drug sniffing dogs. Snider said he sat handcuffed for an hour until an officer told him their search turned up no drugs.
"He said everything was a misunderstanding and that I was free to go," said Snider.
Snider said the officers were laughing. Snider said he found nothing funny about the officers' actions or the damage they caused to his car during the search.
They got to justify their pay somehow.
Procedures were followed. He's damn lucky the ten carloads full of officers didn't fear for their lives.

I lasted a week before being banned for 'flaming' on a Marcotte gun control piece.
My sin was making a snide remark to a user named "Chicagobulldyke" who said I must have a small penis to be defending gun ownership.
What was your remark?
Something about to the effect of "why are you so interested in my penis?" followed up by a comment on Chicago gun control and how I'm sure she is isolated in one of the nicer neighborhoods or suburbs of Chicago and doesn't actually have to interact with the poor people suffering from high crime and violence brought on by progressive urban policies.
The name is "Chicagobulldyke", not Ch-Iraqbulldyke" so she probably didn't get down past 12th Street.
New hope for managing symptoms of having slept with Epi's mom herpes:
A new class of drugs might replace the acyclovir family in minimizing both viral shedding (which can occur even when there aren't herpetic lesions) and the appearance of herpetic lesions.
Decreasing viral shedding makes it much harder to transmit the virus (yay!) and nobody likes herpetic lesions. I'd be curious to see if this is equally effective in decreasing symptoms of chicken pox/shingles and some of the less common herpesviridae like Epstein?Barr or cytomegalovirus (mono)
No idea why this is on io9.
Because Epi's mom is an alien.
Because Epi's mom is an alien.
Space herpes!?
In case you ever wondered what it would look like for cops to surround a mansion with guns, somebody swatted one in Country Club of the South yesterday.
"And what the mansion was doing with guns I haven't a clue."
Recent California case: "The protections of the First Amendment do not turn on whether the defendant was a trained journalist, formally affiliated with traditional news entities, engaged in conflict-of-interest disclosure, went beyond just assembling others' writings, or tried to get both sides of a story. As the Supreme Court has accurately warned, a First Amendment distinction between the institutional press and other speakers is unworkable."

It is scary to think that someone actually made the argument that there is a distinction between institutional press and everyone else.
Nigerian Wisdom: Let's gather up all the gay men and lock them up together.
But there is nothing to worry about if a country goes Muslim.
But in some recent report, the Christian population is now sightly larger than the Muslim population. A 18 December 2012 report on religion and public life by the Pew Research Center stated that in 2010, 49.3 percent of Nigeria's population was Christian, 48.8 percent was Muslim, and 1.9 percent were followers of indigenous and other religions, or unaffiliated.[3] While the 2010s census of Association of Religion Data Archives has also reported that 46.5 percent of the total population is Christian, slighetly bigger than the Muslim population with 45.5 percent, and 7.7 percent are members of other religious groups.[11]
They've actually become less Muslim over time and are now split almost equally between Islam and Christianity. Blaming this on Islam is absurd.
Islam is just a branch of the Southern Baptists anyway.
That is what Shrike tells me anyway.
It's not just the Muslims. Nigeria is split pretty evenly between Muslims and Christians. The president is Christian and supported this law. I recall reading elsewhere that persecutions of gays such as these were previously limited to the north, which is mostly Muslim, so it does seem that the Muslim community in Nigeria is more hostile towards gays than the Christian community is, but I have no idea to what degree.
I know the Christians want it illegal. But I thought the really barbaric stuff was being done by the Muslims in the North. But if not, I stand corrected.
Extra awkward is that some of the more extremely homophobic American preachers who are having a hard time peddling their crazy here anymore are going to Africa and pulling the same shit, but Africans Christians have responded to it in a much more radical way such as Uganda's "kill the gays" bill and this law in Nigeria. Here people take "destroying civilization" with a grain of salt, there they seem to be taking it as a legit existential threat.
Good times.
I suggest reading the article. The point was this law expanded the persecution from the North to the South.
Nigerian Wisdom: Let's gather up all the gay men and lock them up together.
If Nigeria locks up all of the gay people and no more Nigerians are homosexual thereafter, we'll finally have definitive proof that homosexuality is an inherited trait.
But then you've got the contrary evidence from Iran where apparently there are no gay people.
Yay avoiding the moral rot of western imperialism!
They have homosexuals in Iran, but they make it a point to execute them for sodomy (at a rate of 1 to 4 annually).
Nuh uh:
Mmmm...maybe?
I am thinking that the presidential aide is gay.
Bernie Sanders rips Walmart: Why should taxpayers subsidize 'starvation wages'?
Shouldn't he be asking that of the people with kids they can't afford?
Given that the people working at Walmart are not starving, they aren't being paid starvation wages.
I don't get this logic - if Walmart didn't hire these people at all, how would taxpayers be better off?
We'd be better off because they'd all be completely dependent on public assistance and would, therefore, vote always against those evil Republicans and pesky, meddling Libertarians.
Nope, Bernie is absolutely correct.
We should stop subsidizing them. Make all Wal Mart employees ineligible for welfare.
Bingo no more subsidizing starvation wages.
You know what, if we did that Wal Mart would almost certainly have to raise wages some because if they didn't employees would no longer see a benefit in working a job which they cannot afford to survive.
Except that they'd go working for Walmart's competitors, which pay less, but wouldn't be affected by the welfare ban.
Net result? More welfare payments and lower quality of life for those people.
I don't know, Bernie, why should a nation supposedly devoted to free enterprise have a socialist senator?
At least Wal-Mart offers a wage. What do you offer, Bernie?
Helpful populist rhetoric and economically illiterate, working-class-warrior sentiment.
Good point, Bernie. Let's abolish all welfare in favor of simple cash transfers. If you squander that, then your poverty is your own fault and not society's.
Does the Walton family provide a service that gains them that wealth?
Does anybody think it makes moral or economic sense to have just over 500 people, many of whom have no discernible skills other than peddling empty promises, making decisions that can screw over 300 million based on a popularity contest in which only a minority participate and that are only held every few years?
Yes, because vox populi, vox dei.

Excluding those I'd bet it was sometime in the 50's in appalachia
Yeah cuz food is hard to come by in lush hills of appalachia.
Give me a break.
You going to tell me about the back yard garden famine of 56 now?
In the middle of winter, uh yeah it kinda is and parts of appalachia still basically looked the same in 1880 and 1960

I can articulate it just fine. It's dead people. "Ghosts", to the layman.

Most Canadians I know get pretty trashed on the weekends.

Shoot, all of Canada.
Currently in the process of learning why people want dictatorships in my poli-sci class.
So. Much. Fun.
I believe an expert on the subject said something like "The masses are female and want a strong man to lead them."
Considering that we're being told that the right Top Men can single-handedly cause massive, joyous benefits for a nation, I wouldn't be surprised if this came up.
I don't address dictatorships in general terms when I teach World History. When I explain the rise of empires in the 1400s/1500s, I put it down to a desire for order & stability in the face of decades of chaos.
"Welp, now that we've insured that society has become completely atomized and tribalist, let's offer to step in and fix the mess we created! What could go wrong?"
