New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's aides deliberately induced a big traffic jam as revenge against a mayor who wouldn't endorse him. Christie denies that he was aware they were doing this. Let's suppose, just for the sake of argument, that Christie's telling the truth. Does that get the governor -- and would-be president -- off the hook?
Not necessarily. Marc Ambinder explains why, leading off with the portrait of Christie in the recent book Double Down:
Double Down's Christie was megalomaniacal, self-possessed, and obsessed with reciprocity: You do well by him, and he'll do well by you. You fundraise without his permission in New Jersey, and he'll cut the donors off. Loyalty trumped all. If Christie perceived you as disloyal, you were out of his inner circle. That's in passive voice because Christie would leave it to his lieutenants to enforce this code of honor….
The fact that Christie's deputy chief of staff believed it was morally permissible to cause pain to innocents [by snarling traffic on the George Washington Bridge] in order to retaliate against a perceived slight, without seeking his permission, and then refused to own up to it, tells us something about the culture that Christie creates around him. She assumed the boss would be okay with what she did. And so did many other Christie advisers, including his campaign manager. And since Christie denied having anything to do with the bridge study, he apparently has fostered a culture where it's okay to lie to the boss in order to protect him.
So which do you prefer? The kind of ruthless, Nixonian maniac who's willing to screw enormous numbers of people to get revenge on someone he perceives as disloyal? Or the kind of ruthless, Nixonian maniac who builds a machine that can do that without getting him personally involved?

I think Christie, if this is true, is a petty shitbag who has no business anywhere near power. That said, given the unending stream of abuses of power by Obama that the media and the Democrats have ignored and in some cases applauded, I doubt this will do much damage to Christie with the voting public.
This is the age of Obama, this kind of shit is what chief executives do. If the people outraged by this don't like that, well they should have thought about that when they were covering up and lying for Obama.
Except there will be nonstop, around-the-clock coverage of this on all the networks and on the front pages of the NYT and WaPo and every other major newspaper.
Christie's trash and I'm glad he's getting hammered for this, but this is why I so despise the media. They'll flog the shit out of this story, but this is peanuts compared to the IRS scandal (to name just one) and they pretend that never happened.
True. But even low information voters believe that Obama has done things like audit his political enemies. They will cover it, but I think that coverage will have less effect than it should because most voters believe this is just what politicians do.
But he's a government-hating Randroid teathuglican because he canceled ARC. Also, he's Team Red, so it's gospel that he hates whatever the media like and vice versa.
Clinton and to a much greater extent Obama have demonstrated that the president can flip the public the bird and do whatever the fuck they want with no long term consequences.
That too. Jon Corzine ran up the Jersey Turnpike at over a hundred miles an hour in his state police escorted convoy eventually getting in an accident because he was late to a fund raiser. Corzine put dozens or maybe hundreds of people including himself in danger out of vanity. I don't see how that is any better than this.
"The fact that Christie's deputy chief of staff believed it was morally permissible to cause pain to innocents...in order to retaliate against a perceived slight, without seeking his permission, and then refused to own up to it, tells us something about the culture that Christie creates around him."
It may tell us that about what it takes to win and hold power in New Jersey.
This is like hockey. Yeah, I know, I think everything's like hockey, but this really is...
What it takes to win in the regular season is what can make you lose in the playoffs. You can play a finesse game, like the Canucks and the Capitals in recent years, and have an amazing record during the regular season, but you have to play a completely different kind of game once you start playing the same opponent seven times in a row during the playoffs.
New Jersey is the regular season, and national office is the playoffs, and, apparently, what it takes to win in New Jersey is the very thing that makes it impossible to win nationally. I suppose it's the same thing for places like New York and Chicago.
His luck was manufactured for him by the media because of his race.
There are innumerable things about Obama's past and record that should have destroyed his political viability outside of the Daley machine. But the DemOp media went all in for him, and those things just somehow never got a real airing. And it comes down to one thing, I honestly believe:
He's the First Black President(tm).
Christie, on the other hand, as a Fat White Republican, is the DemOp Media's natural prey.
What's being overlooked here is that the people supposedly responsible for it resigned. In other words, if Christie legitimately didn't know they were going to do this, he held the people who did it to account and they lost their jobs. If he knew about it, he still kicked the people in charge of the departments responsible for it out the door. The latter makes him look like a disloyal asshole, but at least he can say, "Hey, I forced the people who did this out of their jobs. Obama still has the worthless women in HHS that oversaw the Obamacare implementation in office. Who's more concerned about administrative competency?"
Christie's a shitbag, but this isn't any worse than all the people getting cornholed by Obamacare, and I don't see anyone being forced to resign over that clusterfuck.
Obama's low standards aren't my standards. Nor are Christie's. Since they're both well below my bar of appropriate conduct, politics, etc., I can despise and refuse to vote for either.
Whether one is better than another isn't really the point--the main lesson here is that Obama and his administration can act like teenage girls with impunity, and demonstrate gross incompetence, and the media doesn't really give a shit.
Sure, but we knew that years before this scandal broke. It might help if Christie actually goes down in flames over this, because the contrast will be there, even if the media tries to ignore it: "Say, why him and not the president?"
principles vs principals. The people criticizing Christie are typically the ones excusing Obama's scandals, and vice-versa. One theme is emerging, however: the rise in chief executives who only seem to find out about something when a reporter asks a question.
"One theme is emerging, however: the rise in chief executives who only seem to find out about something when a reporter asks a question."
There's nothing new about the attempt to claim you didn't know about the scandal, but if you tried that in an earlier era you'd be considered an idiot and unfit for any kind of powerful position for not being able to control your underlings.
Yes, and what's really odd about this is that there is a paper trail. Sure, it doesn't and won't track to Christie, but it shows a degree of hubris that is alone disturbing.
I don't cry for Christie's troubles, but I wonder if a more charitable interpretation is just an aide expressing schadenfreude about an survey's impact that was going to be done anyway.
How the hell do you survey traffic by closing off major thoroughfares? Why not stretch across the street those hose thingies attached to boxes by the roadside?
The reason Christie will fry for this and Obama skates is simple:
Obama abuses people the media wants abused.
The people the IRS went after? Fuck those teabaggers, they deserve it for being heartless brutes who want to cut social spending.
The ATF was running a scam to produce media stories that would help pass more restrictions on gun dealers? Awesome, finally someone is taking the initiative on reining in those scumbag gun dealers.
Christie's people caused traffic jams? OMFG THE FURST RESPONDAHS AND THE CHILLRUNS!
It is true the media will flog the shit out of this, thereby doing us all a favor.
Although the real reason they hate the Tea Party is because the Tea Party is an authentic grassroots right-leaning popular movement, and their ideology claims that those things don't exist.
To see the right weilding "people power" is something they can't stomach or fathom. Only Democrats are allowed to have protest marches and chant stupid slogans. If anyone else does it they are insane racists.
I can only immagine the fucking conniption fits they would have if someone showed up at a Tea Party rally with a giant puppet that looked like Obama.
There is every bit as much evidence in the IRS scandal as there is here.
And the IRS scandal was wider in scope and longer in duration.
The number one excuse for the IRS scandal offered in the press is, "Well, those groups HAD TO BE given greater scrutiny, because DARK MONEY!" No one disputes it took place, and no one any longer seriously disputes that it was not the work of low-level staffers.
The most fascinating thing is how you can live permanently in the rightwing echo chamber whereas I can't spend 10 minutes there without wanting to kill myself.
No question the media will flog the shit out of it with all of the self awareness and honesty of Shreek having one of his BUSHPIG fits. But I don't think it will stick the Christie very well. The cumulative effect of the media ignoring and lying about Obama's abuse of power is to make most voters so cynical that they just expect this kind of behavior by politicians and thus will not be swayed by it.
I certainly wouldn't shed any tears over fatso's demise. But I am skeptical this will do it, no matter how big of a fit the media throws.
What it does is destroy the two critical claims the establishment GOP wanted to make about Christie:
1. He's bipartisan!
2. He's electable!
Without those two things, he's just another RINO. The GOP primary electorate hated him before, but that electorate got McCain and Romney shoved down their throats because "We need someone who can win!" When you're damaged goods, you don't get to be the guy held up as "someone who can win".
Maybe it will destroy is appeal to the GOP establishment. But it won't to anyone else.
I am not sure that it destroys his appeal as bi-partisan. Again, people expect this kind of petty shit. That won't keep them from thinking Fatso is a tough guy who gets things done. And that is Fatso's appeal more than anything.
1. I'm really glad I don't work in Fort Lee anymore.
2. I don't even understand this shit. Fucking up traffic across a region is revenge? If I was still working in Fort Lee, I would have been fucked - and I'm certainly not a Democrat.
Now, every time I see lanes closed for no obvious reason - which is often in NJ/NY, I'm going to be suspicious.
Right, and who would think to like, call the Fort Lee mayor's office because of GWB traffic? No one. Ever. What % of the people stuck were from Fort Lee? The whole thing makes absolutely no sense as revenge.
Commuters are quite aware that the bridges and tunnels are run by the states (NY/NJ) and the Port Authority. It wouldn't have occurred to me to blame the mayor of Fort Lee.
Christie's appeal has never been based on his ideology or ethics. The public likes him because he is one of the rare republican candidates who can open his mouth without looking like a complete moron. Most republican presidential aspirants have been clowns: Trump, Gingrich, Perry, Santorum, Huckabee, etc. Hell, their last president was a clown. If they had any pride at all, the republican party would have disbanded after Bush.
Christie belongs more to the McCain, Romney, Jeb Bush, crowd. People like his self-confidence and his ability to (usually) speak without saying something incredibly embarrassing. The fact that he's a smug power-hungry self-serving bastard is immaterial because they are all smug power-hungry self-serving bastards.
people liked him initially because he talked down to people many on the right had no issue seeing addressed that way, mostly public sector unions. But he lost some cred when the only folks he dressed down were teachers. Nothing for cops, firemen, assorted bureaucrats, etc.
The schtick further became tiresome when it became evident that blowhard was his default approach to anyone who disagreed on anything, from folks suggesting he stop blowing Obama on election week to Rand Paul for daring question the security boner.
But he lost some cred when the only folks he dressed down were teachers. Nothing for cops, firemen, assorted bureaucrats, etc.
Since when do you dress down people that aren't fighting you? The NJEA wanted a war and Christie gave them one.
The cops, firefighters, and other assorted bureaucrats were getting theirs as well from the policy side (uniforms still have to kick in more than teachers and bureaucrats for pension and bennies following the reforms), but their leadership and allied legislators didn't put up any more than token opposition and didn't keep bitching about it following the reform's passage. What's he supposed to do, constantly call out his allies for getting the state into this mess so they turn on him and torpedo the whole thing?
The fact that Christie's deputy chief of staff believed it was morally permissible to cause pain to innocents [by snarling traffic on the George Washington Bridge] in order to retaliate against a perceived slight, without seeking his permission, and then refused to own up to it, tells us something about the culture that Christie creates around him.
No kidding.
"Sir, I cannot tell a lie. It was I who chopped down the cherry tree which blocked the bridge and caused such pain and misery."
Didn't know how it was gonna happen, but the inevitable scandal that would bring and end to Christie's presidential ambitions was sure to be fucking crazy and delicious.
Barry and his clowns allowed four people to be mobbed to death, lied about what they did to stop it, and lied about what caused it.
Now, even if I bought your bullshit claim that the POTUS had absolutely no knowledge of any of that and it was all the fault of gormless/incompetent/just plain dumber-than-shit underlings, and Barry was as clean as fresh mountain snow, IT IS STILL FUCKING INEXCUSABLE. Heads should have rolled. Careers should have ended. Nothing happened.
And yet you defend him, dismiss any desire to find out the truth as partisan hack showboating, and call it all a big ol' pile of nothing to see here, folks.
Governor Jugs, who is a statist, RINO, blithering blow-hard of Moby Dickish scale and no champion of liberty for anyone anywhere, probably was involved in a bout of petty regional assholery. You're just about creaming your jeans about it.
If you were a real person and not a sockpuppet, the cognitive dissonance would have to drive you to suicide. For reals.

"Didn't know how it was gonna happen, but the inevitable scandal that would bring and end to Christie's presidential ambitions was sure to be fucking crazy and delicious."
And slimy hypocrites like you aren't bothered by Obo doing the same.
Easy to understand; ethics and morality ain't in your make up.
Nah, he only deliberately closed of public areas to inconvenience people in retribution for the Republicans not giving him what he wanted re - budget.
That includes people in a hotel in Yellowstone being told they can't *leave* the building since the sidewalk around the hotel is 'government property'.
Let's add in the people who had their water shut off during the shutdown because a government employee actually went and closed the valves.
Or the people who run park concessions, with no oversight or assistance from the government, on public lands who were told they had to close also, fuck you if you're going to lose money - blame the Republicans for 'forcing' Obama to do this.
Now remember, this is what happens in urban places. It is this kind of urban politics that is leading the country at the moment. Just look at what Eric "I'm a Racist" Holder has been trying to do.
Whatever happened to Rand Paul's plagiarism accusation? That story had life for about 30 minutes. I guess he's not threat to be taken out, so that went away quickly.
I heard Rand is thinking about suing the NSA to protect our freedoms. Any media coverage on that?
I swear, this may help Christie in the long run. He's already getting support from some liberals. It's undeniable that he's been held up as the "different kind of Republican". He's pals will Obama, bipartisan, and he already mocked the libertarians.
But this issue will be forgotten by Valentine's day. Just like how the shootings, sequestration, government shutdown, terrible Colorado flood and Weinergate are all distant memory. Obamacare may hit a new low next month and save Christie's ample ass.
You know who else had a machine for crushing their enemies?
The Empire?
The Decapodians?
Gaear Grimsrud?
Tulpa?
Ken Shultz?
I don't use a machine.
I use...verbiage.
Tons and tons of verbiage.
Nah, you spew santorum.
just kidding.
Richard J. Daley?
The Builders?
Conan the mechanically-oriented Barbarian?
The Americans?
Skynet?
The 1993 Dallas Cowboys?
Nick Saban?
They should just have told him the catering truck was delayed, he'd have restarted tge traffic!
*snort*
You do well by him, and he'll do well by you. You fundraise without his permission in New Jersey, and he'll cut the donors off. Loyalty trumped all. If Christie perceived you as disloyal, you were out of his inner circle.
I'm guessing Christie loved The Sopranos.
I think Christie, if this is true, is a petty shitbag who has no business anywhere near power. Said better than I could. Double agreement on despising mainstream media.
Also, he is possible competition to Hillary, therefore he must be taken out. Ends justify means.
Maybe 60 Minutes will try to dig it up a year from now with some fake "eyewitness" like they did Benghazi.
You keep flogging that molly demfag. Sooner or later it's bound to be true.
So Obama went back in time and planted the IRS and ATF staffers in the 2002-2008 time frame so they would carry out his Machiavellien plans?
You get more vapid every day.
Btw - this appears to be only a political issue for Christie. Just as the Obama fake scandals are.
BUSHPIG!!!! BUHSPIG!!!
Let it out shreek. I know whenever the Black Jesus is mentioned on here, even the meds don't really help.
Why are you a moron?
So Obama went back in time and planted the IRS and ATF staffers in the 2002-2008 time frame so they would carry out his Machiavellien plans?
Yeah, it's not like they all share an ideology and belong to the same criminal organization.

"So Obama went back in time"...
Go fuck your daddy, shitpile.
So if I'm a new CEO or manager of a company, I'm not responsible for the conduct of employees hired by previous admin?
That's new.
You called Christie 'petty' rather than 'thin-skinned'? You think you're too good to make such an obvious joke?
I think Christie, if this is true, is a petty shitbag who has no business anywhere near power.
He is a former federal prosecutor, so we already knew that.
And he's anti-gun, anti-property rights. Hammer away, media.
But he's a government-hating Randroid teathuglican because he canceled ARC. Also, he's Team Red, so it's gospel that he hates whatever the media like and vice versa.
That too.
Yep.
Clinton and to a much greater extent Obama have demonstrated that the president can flip the public the bird and do whatever the fuck they want with no long term consequences.
Wondering how this is news. It is New Jersey for crying out loud. That is the way they roll.
Only because Fatboy had positioned himself for a Presidential run and held himself out as a straight shooter, etc.
He appears to be a straight shooter. It is what he is shooting at that is the problem.

The contrast with the Cheney Administration's special kind of ugly had a lot to do with it, too.

Therefore I like Republican presidents.

Also, the post title could be an Amnesia reference. But I think A Machine for Pigs describes standars politics fairly well anyway.
Are you suggesting that he's some sort of God Emperor?

I don't cry for Christie's troubles, but I wonder if a more charitable interpretation is just an aide expressing schadenfreude about an survey's impact that was going to be done anyway.

And Hillary Clinton will find out just how much the American people will say "For the umpteenth fucking time, Hillary, we just don't like you."
It astounds me how much the Republican party is consistently duped by establishment concern trolling.
You should nominate Romney because he's So ELECTABLE! Because a rich Mormon venture capitalist who pioneered ObamaCare will DEFINITELY win!
You should nominate Chris Christie, because he's so electable! Because Fat Loudmouths are So TELEGENIC and NOT Liable to self-destruct!
I mean, seriously, when was the last time a fat guy was even nominated by either party? That hasn't happened since before television.

Well everyone knows the ranch like product neutralizes the natural poisons found in the chicken like product.
That's in passive voice
No, it isn't. This has been a public service announcement.
I just want to shake the hand of whatever Democratic operative set Christie up.
Thank you for eliminating the most formidable anti-libertarian Republican in the race.
Good riddance to that fat fuck, Chris Christie.
That would probably mean shaking Hillary's hand.
And remember...she touches herself with that hand.
I'll make sure to wear a rubber glove laced with herpes virus then.
Hahaha. She's fucked Bill at least once. No way she doesn't already have herpes.

Really? The public likes him because he reminds them of Tony Soprano, and they think it's cool. For now.
I'm pretty sure the Tony Soprano act will start to wear thing when ... RIGHT NOW.
I mean speaking of clown acts...
people liked him initially because he talked down to people many on the right had no issue seeing addressed that way, mostly public sector unions.
Jindal ain't stupid.
"Good girl. Have a danish. They're delicious."
"Why are you looking around?"
"I just want to make sure I'm not standing on plastic."
Didn't know how it was gonna happen, but the inevitable scandal that would bring and end to Christie's presidential ambitions was sure to be fucking crazy and delicious.
try and keep up, Obamaboy. Christie's a dick but the level of dickishness required to see aspirations end has increased exponentially under Barry.
It's the level of pettiness that is crazy.
I realize that even when Republicans do wrong it's somehow Obama's fault too.
For reals.
And here I was thinking how nice it's been that I hadn't seen a Tony post in a couple of weeks.

And slimy hypocrites like you aren't bothered by Obo doing the same.
Easy to understand; ethics and morality ain't in your make up.
Obama deliberately induced a traffic jam as retribution for not getting a political endorsement?
Perhaps you ought to get a professional to check out what looks to be a serious case of ODS.
Seriously. This wasn't even 3 months ago.
Fuck you, Tony.
If your side had any brains they would have kept this shit under wraps and released it one month before the 2016 election.
Got to hand it to the Beckerhead.
Glenn Beck Dubs Christie's Bridge Scandal 'Fat & Furious'
TPM.
Go fuck your daddy, shitpile.
Well, it *is* better than 'bridgegate'.
Now remember, this is what happens in urban places. It is this kind of urban politics that is leading the country at the moment. Just look at what Eric "I'm a Racist" Holder has been trying to do.
Fuck Obama and fuck Christie.
Eric Holder trying to stop black children from going to private schools in Louisiana with white children.
Racist, lying piece of shit.

megalomaniacal, self-possessed, and obsessed with reciprocity
So...a politician then.
christie doesn't need a machine to do that, c'mon
