Sorry, I am already married.
It shouldn't be illegal for you to marry mutliple people, regardless of gender.
It isn't, you just can't get a government issued marrage licence for that.
How can a marriage (or anything for that matter) exist without government recognition?
The same way everything else does sarc, by just being.
Without force of government behind them, empty assertions are empty.
Word. I lost my birth certificate for a couple of weeks...I almost disappeared.
This one I think actually is illegal in places.
Yup.
People get jailed for bigamy.
Actually you can get those licenses, but just one spouse at a time and the government does not care (as long as previous licensed marriages went through their de-marriage system). Unless you are a traditional Mormon, then if you get married, divorced, and re-married the polygamy police get all in your business, even if you keep your ex's in Texas and your house is in Texas.
Hello.
Pretty sure you forgot to preface that with "Killswitch".
Welcome.
The 9th Circuit Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for Los Angeles authorities to demand hotels and motels release guest information to them without a warrant.
They have, uh, friends who stay there from time to time and their, uh, friend's wives don't need to find out about it.
Congratulations on having the first meaningful comment!
Thanks, I've been trying for so long. It's nice to finally have my hard work pay off.
They needed to ask a judge if it was okay to violate the fourth amendment?
They needed to ask a judge if it was okay to violate the fourth amendment?
It was worth a shot. The NSA is allowed to ignore it.
The federal government is reportedly working on new regulations for face and hand transplants.
Register your new face! Because otherwise the NSA would have to completely reconfigure its facial recognition software.
If you like your old face, you can keep it.
I'm surprised they're going to the trouble of making facial recognition software instead of just forcing people to get barcodes stamped on their foreheads.
It's like Somalia out here.
where did everyone go?
I think the Rapture finally arrived. I'm one of two people at my office today.
Wait until the man from Mars shows up.
I'm the only one at mine today and damnit, I went to law school so I wouldn't have to pretend to be a receptionist.
🙂 I can't be asked to do grossly out of title work - like dealing with the public. After all, you can't have the IT guy being paid Grade 23 rates for Grade 6 work. (And that rule predated the unions, believe it or not)
IT is bad enough dealing with coworkers, let alone the milling milieu massing menacingly outdoors.
Glued to the Friday Funnies?
Well, it was a bit tacky.
I see why God didn't take you.
Awww... crap.
Since most people comment from work, I imagine they took the week off.
I took the week off - but I'm so desperate for the warm caresses of H&R that I gave in.
Oww, I'm sorry for you man.
I went back to work to get some peace and quiet.
same. there's nobody here. it's fantastic.
I know it. I'm actually getting things done for a change.

CNN Poll: GOP has edge in early midterm indicator
NOTHING TO SEE HERE!
/Baghdad Shrike
Passing the spending bill was the GOP aiming to hold on to that lead.
All they need to do now is start talking about abortion and TEH GAYZ and they'll have it on lockdown.
never underestimate the Repubs' ability to snatch defeat when victory is very possible. And talking about the social shit is the fastest route to that.
Or bizarre comments about rape.
Seriously, get everyone in a room after the primaries and practice.
If you hear the word "rape" in a question, start off by saying, "Rape is horrible and there is never any justification for a woman to undergo such an experience." Then shut up.
Oh, hai, NRSC, I am available to consult for a mere $200/hr for your candidates.
But don't women's bodies reject pregnancies from rape?
"Rape is horrible and there is never any justification for a woman to undergo such an experience."
See?
Then talk about Obamacare some. And show a clip of Obama saying "if you like your plan, you can keep it"
Talking about legislating the social shit is what screws them. As much as it screws any politician.
Glenn Greenwald defended his defense of Edward Snowden while on MSNBC yesterday by pointing out that that network shills for Barack Obama 24 hours a day.
Traitors don't give leg tingles.
The federal government is reportedly working on new regulations for face and hand transplants.
They just saw the Nic Cage/ John Travolta movie and found it very disturbing.
Back alley transplants!
Obama also signed the latest NDAA, complaining about the restrictions on Guantanamo detainees it included and that Congress isn't doing more about the prison.
The president can't just unilaterally change parts of laws he doesn't like without congressional authorization, you know!
Yea, he finally found a role for the Congress in our dear federal government.
Which is to take the blame for his own weaselly inaction.
Obama also signed the latest NDAA, complaining about the restrictions on Guantanamo detainees it included and that Congress isn't doing more about the prison.
----
Yet you still signed it.
He just had to toss a bone to his braindead supporters. As long as he acts like he feels bad when he does evil shit, they will remain devoted.
Shhhhhh.
Look! Obama wants to do stuff but those mean old rethuglikkkans won't let him! I mean, he said they're not doing enough and that's all that counts!
/Bitter impotent rage masquerading as cheap sarcasm
President Obama signed the bipartisan spending deal negotiated in Congress earlier this month while on his vacation in Hawaii.
The Winter of Recovery is here!
Morning all!
Good Morning!
behold! The power of the penis.
It takes 15 Oregon cops and a Taser to subdue alleged masturbating meth-head
Are we sure he wasn't high on Obamacare heroin?
Reverse bukakke or reluctant circle jerk? You decide.
They could have at least had the decency to wait until he was done.
Then he'd have probably just gone to sleep.
Meth is a gateway drug to bodacious superpowers.
They need to move "alleged" to between "masturbating" and "meth-head". They knew he was masturbating; they didn't know whether he was on any drugs. Of course, they can always make up some drug for him to have been "on".
Well, just because he was stroking his erect penis, doesn't mean he was masturbating. I'm not sure that's been established beyond doubt, you know?
I'm sorry if you're married to a prick tease. :-p

Go Away! 'Batin!
Heroes, one and all. I'm sure they got in a couple extra kicks apiece to make it all worth it.
If only he had moaned "God, yes, zap me again you big stud!" it might have confused the cops enough to keep them from beating the crap out of him.
More like "Oregon Cop Tasers Suspect, Calls in his Buddies to Laugh at the guy when he continues to Masturbate, Everybody gets Hazard pay"
37-year-old Andrew Frey
He should pretend to forgive the cops, then invite them all to a wedding feast at the Twins.
Just to be sure.
This is a Diogenes joke right?
The United Nation wants the US and Yemen to confirm their roles in two drone strikes this month that both hit wedding processions in Yemen. The UN also wants to know what targeting standards are used and whether there are any plans to compensate victims' families.
Obama will send over a drone with that info right away. Just gather in one place and sit still.
I don't know what the fuss is all about - I mean, wasn't it just an Amazon prototype delivery drone bringing wedding presents and it happened to crash?
It must have been. The right-thinking people are flipping out over Bezos's drones while maintaining stony silence on Obama's drones.
Bezos's drones run on filthy profitssess, while Obama's are powered by noble intentions.
Are these the same people who (rightly) froth at the mouth over atrocities committed in the name of religion, but fall silent or HEY! LOOK OVER THERE! at the mention of the hundreds of millions killed by the state?
Merry Belated Christmas, folks. And by folks, I mean terrorists, a la GWB.
I got a pair of Fluevogs.
"a pair of Fluevogs"
An here I thought the Dutch had hunted them to extinction!
In the wild, yes. There are still some bred in captivity.
If you haven't heard of them, then your wife hasn't heard of them, so you should thank your lucky stars.
I have no wife, which makes me the luckiest man alive.
"Progressive, art-deco inspired styles"?
How is going back to the 1930s progressive? And what the hell is a progressive shoe style anyway?
And why do women obsess about shoes?
They mention bacon right there on their home page! Duh!
Is that why these particular shoes are progressive, or why women obsess over shoes?
Yes.
The design wants to ban alcohol again. Fits right in with a nannyist agenda.
Extra-comfort for stomping on people's faces.
"what the hell is a progressive shoe style anyway?"
100% American hobo produced using materials of exaggerated cost under the authority of the Whistle, Piss, and Argue agency.
"And why do women obsess about shoes?"
Because your shoe size tends to stay the same regardless of how much weight you gain.
The correct spelling is Yule Logs.
Apparently Mr. Fluevog decided wealthy rednecks need oxfords too.
Send the link to Phil Robertson! Although I think they're more Willie's style...
Merry xams fellow rablerouser. I, no shit, got a real Top Hat from my daughter. How freakin' awesome is that.
I been wearing ever since.
As required by law, and someone of the female persuasion reading over my shoulder, I must ask, WHICH Fluevogs? Specificity makes the envy more sweet.

Glenn Greenwald defended his defense of Edward Snowden while on MSNBC yesterday by pointing out that that network shills for Barack Obama 24 hours a day.
Fair and balanced!
"And" is better than "or".
Of course, MSNBC is "neither".
"Twitchy and Unbalanced."
Nice defense, Kristen.
That defense admits up front that there are at least some people at MSNBC who do, in fact, shill for Obama 24 hours a day.
It's true that MSNBC does not shill for Obama 24/7.
I mean, sometimes they run commercials. And then there are the Lockup reruns.
You mean campaign ads?
"We take turns."
Actually, its admitting right up front that *most* do.
We have an intern who has doubts about this administration!
No one is not everyone, so no, it doesn't.
I know we can't get enough of this story:
A&E's Duck Dynasty Dilemma
The network shouldn't expect the Robertson clan to back down.
this is what happens when you don't need the money or care much for the fame, etc. Part of me thinks Phil has had enough and wants to return to his old life. The man is not stupid; no way he did not know his comments might stir the pot.
Problem is, NR is trying to make an argument based on Faith, but ultimately you can't separate their Faith from their Fame/Wealth. Only if they were poor as dirt and had A&E as their only source of income could you legitimately argue a Faith based argument.
Otherwise, one suspects they're saying FU because they are already wealthy and famous and they don't really give a shit about being PC.
NTTAWWT
Phil turned down the NFL because it interfered with Duck hunting season.
He wasnt rich when he made that decision.
I think he has a back history that suggests that having money isnt what allows him to do this.
I agree.
I don't know how old he is, nor do I care enough to look, but back in the day, the NFL didn't pay shit.
Anyhow, that also shows how you can't simply default to a Faith motivation.
He played college ball with Terry Bradshaw. There was a decent amount of money to be made as a QB in the NFL back then.
To be clear, Terry was his backup.
No shit?
I will admit to not giving one fuck about this story, but that tidbit makes it mildly interesting.
Robertson was recruited by bigger schools but went to La Tech to stay close to home.
Bradshaw was a year younger and his backup. Robertson quit football (but not school) after his junior year because practice interfered with duck hunting.
Even after taking his senior year off, the Redskins contacted him about playing for them, they wanted to sign him anyway.
Bradshaw, meanwhile, got to play 2 seasons instead of 1 and became Terry Bradshaw.
IIRC, that is close to accurate.
There was a decent amount of money to be made as a QB in the NFL back then.
Average salary was about $200K inflation-adjusted. Pretty good even back then.
I just want to know what is "hell" about a government being constrained to its most important and ONLY legitimate function, protecting the rights of the individual.
To me, that is the "balance" she is talking about.
I mean, its not extreme like anarchy would be.
True. I should give people the benefit of the doubt more often.
No, in this case, I dont think so.
People might express views she doesn't agree with, or do things she doesn't like.
"I think there needs to be a hearty balance between the individual and the collective. Either extreme is hell."
What the fuck does "hearty balance" even mean? Does it come with barley?
Again, who gets to do the balancing? How?
If the collective tries to have it's way with me, the power can be readily balanced with sufficient firepower on my part.
Fucken-A.
Give 'em hell.
Guys, just when you thought the fake interpreter was going to be the craziest thing to come out of Nelson Mandela's funeral, I give you this tasty bit of conspiracy theory.
A very interesting rumor from a reputable source, is that the Mandela Funeral was used as a cover-story to assemble the world's Top Leaders to pay homage to an ancient Nephilim alien ET leader called Marduk and who has allegedly returned after hundreds of years absence to be crowned as the new King of Africa, perhaps later to be elevated to "Ruler of The NWO" or the "New Caesar of the Ages"as the final Third Force Plan for the Globalist NWO is revealed and actuated in full.
If true, the Mandela funeral has perhaps provided great cover to assemble the world's top leaders to pay homage to Marduk as the new "Crowned King of Africa". And as the Mandela Funeral became a major world event covered in detail on every major news network around the world, there were several strange anomalies during or surrounding the funeral that have became apparent and which can be interpreted in ways which support this rumor.
I didn't know Marmaduke had ever left...
I thought Hulk Hogan was the ruler of the nWo.
I for one welcome our new alien overlords.
not the wolpack NWO
Mandela's dead?
Just as dead as Lou Reed.
Lou Reed is dead!!!!!!!
Really? Next thing you know, someone is going to tell me the Cleveland Browns let him down or somesuch.
Where's the outrage over the name of the Cleveland Browns? Shouldn't the low-information outrage machine be howling about that one too? (Not that they'd know the actual origin of the name)
Buncha naggers...
One of the great actors of our day.
Call Sam and Dean, pronto. Somebody needs to get ganked.
Consumers beware: Not all health plans cover doc visits before deductible is met
That's actually a good thing. But it should not have been enforced at the barrel of a gun. And the FREE SHIT crowd is going to be pissed.
I agree that it's a good thing, and I really can't feel sorry for people who don't know what's going on with their plan when they buy it. I hate Obamacare as much as anyone, but I'm sick of people telling me my HDHP is terrible insurance because I have to pay more than $5 for everything.
and don't ever suggests that low-cost sharing drives utilization. because health care is not like anything else known to man.
You can go without your morning Starbucks when money's tight, but not your healthcare. Ergo, healthcare is an extra-market good.
Never mind that Starbucks is a highly successful international franchise, a boutique retailer with an easily substitutable product line, and in any event the paradigm of competitive efficiency that should serve as a model for healthcare delivery.
So given how long the deadline for January 1 coverage under Obamacare keeps getting extended, I wonder about the next part: How long will the payment deadline for January 1 coverage be extended? I'm guessing mid-February.

FDNY to firefighters: No holiday party pics
Some H n R people haz a sad.
If they take pictures, the venue will be declared a photography studio, and the venue hasn't been inspected for that purpose.
Not to worry, they know the fire marshall.
The Aussie invasion has begun.
Man spots kangaroo while hunting in Oklahoma
Those scout roos are supposed to be stealthier than that!
It's a ruse. The real vanguard snuck by this guy while he was distracted.
Which begs the question, did he hold fire because he was only loaded for bird?
That's not begging the question.
Wild Kangaroos need to be released on every continent.
OT: I have a new novella out (~53k words). 99c at Amazon. However when it eventually gets transferred to B&N, Apple, Sony, etc - it will be free for a month or so.
Grave Injustice
Congrats. I quite enjoyed Nano Zombie.
You expect me to follow a link during the AM Links? You can't just let us know what it's about?
I always felt guilty about selling stories that short. *Looks at latest Amazon statement* $2.10? Maybe I should sell my shorter works too, sales of the longer ones are tapering off.
PS, who does your cover art?
I do my own cover art - pay for the image on Dreamstime and then add the title using an online photo editor.
I understand your short vs. long work, but - based on what I see out there - there are plenty of authors selling 15-30K long works for $1.99 to $3.99. Or even 3k-5K works for 99c. As a reader, I think those are extremely bad deals. I tend to price everything at 99c or free.
Darn, I'm trying to find a cover artist, because I can't find applicable existing art, and my own talents in the visual arena are - lacking.
I'm still coming around to not regarding e-publishing like the old vanity presses. (Though a conversation with William King on the subject when I met him at a convention did help somewhat).
Most of all, I don't want my readers to feel cheated.
No idea what your budget is, but a buddy of mine is in the biz.
http://www.subterraneanstudio.com/
Do you know the ballpark range on commissioned digital work, or will I have to ask him?
What's your budget?
I haven't worked that out yet, I can probably swing triple digit range, or low four digits if the quality of work justifies it (and depending on what rights the artist wants to keep versus is willing to part with as a work for sale agreement)
*work for hire agreement.
What sort of actual artistic expectations do you have? i.e. Do you expect electronic brush and paint illustrations? I've had a regular designer put together a hot hardback book book cover in the $150 range including stock photography license costs that cover print reproductions.
It really depends what your expectations are.
I would add that the assumption is if you commission the job The IP becomes yours. A simple contact with 2 lines can easily secure the artist's surrender of the IP
I was hoping to find someone from the actual illustrator side that I could negotiate with, because I personally feel it'd produce a more revelent and worthwhile cover, especially in the sf/urban fantasy genre.
Sorry about the typoes, there isn't an edit button here.
I am friends with her father. Take a look at her style and let me know if you would you like me to inquire on your behalf. She does a lot of styles and goes to comic conventions. Might be up your alley.
Or contact her directly. I am by no means a conduit or anything.
It doesn't hurt to inquire, and passed the 'first glance' test of quality (I'll still be taking a closer look when not at work).
Actually, the more I think about it, the main antagonist has an art deco aethetic, which she seems to capture very well. (The protagonists are more modern) So It might work out as a good fit.
My writing business e-mail is scribe at evcombine.net . (I have to keep it separate from my day job e-mail)

Thanks for the referral.
Just the same if you think it helps I could put in a word, hype your fiction or something like that, I could do that.

exactly.
Just cut out the middleman and send them directly to al Qaeda.
IF they really wanted to cut out the middle man they would just bomb our embassy themselves.
That's what Obama thinks he's doing with the drone program.
They failed to mention that they were being delivered armed, and at Mach 5...
a followup on my old man - he went and saw some more doctors. Internal bleeding appears to have stopped. More tests today and next week.
Based on the symptoms I was fearing cancer - now not so sure. We shall see.
Sounds like goodish news...hoping for the best!
The worst part - at least after the doctor visit - was driving my parents back to their house deep in the woods. The highways were patches of black ice and, in some areas, no plowing. I've been driving for years - mostly RWD cars (some quite fast) & trucks - but I still get non-stop advice from my dad on how to drive in the snow. Thanks, dad!
I'd worry more if he wasn't well enough to back-seat (or side-seat) drive.
lol, glad you made it there and back ok. I also have a great deal of experience driving very fast RWD cars in snow...I still get white knuckle concentration though, even with the AWD suv with new tires.
Glad its looking better for y'all.
Hope the news stays good!
How much of a zoo do you think Whore Foods will be today after work (around 5pmish)? It's bad enough during non-busy times, but I don't know if I can handle yupster overload.
Why would today be so busy?
I dunno - all retail tends to be crazy after Xmas, including grocery.
The one in Sliver Spring's parking lot is so ridiculously small, that it's fucked shopping there before you even get in the door.
I should bend to our masters' desires and just walk everywhere.
Fukcing FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!
When will this fucking holiday fucking end!!!
I need a god damn holiday to celebrate the end of the fucking holidays.
I hate myself when I shop there, yet I cannot stop.
I can't imagine today would be any busier than a regular Friday.
I love shopping there because of John Mackey. I hate shopping there because of the other customers. I love shopping there because of the employees.
Two-to-one wins!
I'll give it an attempt. Their parking garage can get out of control sometimes.
Agreed with that. But man, the other customers.
The very, very worst is Berkeley Bowl. An absolutely awesome store, one of the finest in the world. But hordes of Angry Liberals.
"Hey, do you have any coffee that isn't FAIR TRADE? The fair trade coffee doesn't extract well enough with the orphan tears. By the way, where do you keep orphan tears?"
Wait, you BUY orphan tears instead of harvesting your own?
If I were a libertarian, I might be upset at that.
You have to trod a careful line, otherwise your orphans get so inured to their lot in life that they just don't cry no matter what you do.
Plus, free range orphan tears are very on trend.
parking garage
Thats an automatic disqualifier for me.
Except for the Varsity in Atlanta.
It's in a downtown area (outskirts of Old Town Alexandria) - no room for a normal parking lot.
That's an automatic disqualifier for me 🙂
You should see the one in Columbia Heights in DC. Holy fuckballs. You would have to pay for my groceries plus a $10k fee for me to go in that one. I shouldn't complain about the Alexandria one so much, I guess.
Drive down 66 to Fair Lakes. There's a huge one there with a wine bar.
Springfield's all right...
Where in Springfield, Steve? You mean on Old Keene Mill? That's a bit far out for me. I'm in Huntington.
Rog, Keene Mill... but we live around the corner in Annandale
Speaking of which, I need to get back there before all the full fat egg nog disappears for another 10 months
I think the problem is the entire region you live in.
The DC metro area is an automatic disqualifier.
The DC metro area is an automatic disqualifier.
I so can't wait to show this area my ass on my way to better people and climes.
Well, to be honest, I could show it my ass anyway.
same here
Me three.
Yes, KK, and thinking of John Mackey draining the wallets of those libtards almost makes me weep for joy.
Their bakery has some amazing cakes.
I hope it's better that the dry-as-bone cupcakes I got there.
Whole Paycheck is a much better descriptor.
Yeah. Great for specialty items and things of that nature but doing all of your grocery shopping there is insane.
When I lived near one I would buy my herbs and spices there from the bulk section. Save a ton of money. Can't think of anything else I would buy there though.
I'm just going because I'm having a crazy seafood craving today. I don't have another reliable seafood purveyor in my 'hood.
It's probably cheaper to buy some gear and catch it yourself.
MMM....Potomac River fish....num num!

Wait, sarcasm? Does this mean you live in the general vicinity of DC and aren't a super mutant?
Or is my sarcasm detector on the fritz again?
Oh, its great for meat, fish, and cheese. Also, the arrival of Whole Foods and Trader Joes within a week of each other has done spectacular things for the price of drinkable, but not great wine in our area.
I just have to go with a list and adult supervision.
In Maryland, we can't be trusted to buy wine just anywhere from anyone. There are rules to follow.
We can only dream of going to just about any store to buy beer and wine.
It appears, shopping a local wine store last weekend, that the clearing price for a bottle of red wine that I consider not special but definitely better than what I think of as table wine is under $10 now. I know this because I bought a bottle for $10 at Whole Foods the week before and this guy was selling it for $6.99. (So I bought a case.)
I eagerly await the non-blends coming down to $12-$15.
which whole foods? I was a the one in foggy bottom after visiting family at GW Hospital (i'm now an uncle) .. day after Thanksgiving. it was a war zone.
Old Town - Duke St.
That one is a war zone nearly every day.
Congrats on becoming an uncle!
That one is packed every single day. Every. Day.
We have a butcher out here that makes Whole Foods look like an inner city Wal-Mart. Its called Tony's and I went there for tenderloin...on Monday...I am dumb.
We have one too, but he doesn't do seafood.
only go to the Duke St WFs after 9PM - tolerably slow at that time. Bonus is 2-for-1 pizza if they have surplus.
as people don't realize that if they're buying a bronze plan, they may have to pay $5,000 out of pocket before it contributes a penny," said Carl McDonald, senior analyst with Citi Investment Research,
Where has the THAT'S NOT REALLY INSURANCE chorus gone? Must be on a union-mandated break.
The weird thing is, I was surprised these plans still exist, I thought high deductible plans were banned by the ACA.
When I was offered one of these as a replacement for my current plan, I was stunned. That is was worse than my current HD plan just made me laugh.
I think they defined "high-deductible" as anything $10,000 or above for an individual.
If you look at some of these current HD plans, it's typically about $5-7.5K for an individual, and about $10-12K for a family. Which, unsurprisngly, fucks middle-income families with stay-at-home parents.
they changed the name. what used to be a "high deductible" plan are called "Catastrophic" ... and those are restricted to those 30 or younger. "high decutible" in ACA-speak are are plans with a minimum deductible of $1250 per year for individual coverage and $2500 for family coverage
that doesn't mean you won't have high deductibles for an HMO or whatever. but that's a different classification.
and yes. it's a cluster fuck.
So basically ALL silver plans and bronze plans are "high deductible."
We were just in the Bahamas, and the tour driver showed us the private hospital, was horrified that you had to show up with $1500 to even be seen there. I was thinking the whole time ... that's two insurance payments. Like, nothing.

Cunt.
FEMEN requires the Vatican elders and their fanatical followers to stop producing medieval chimeras and edit their rotten dogma in accordance with the modern world and human rights.
Well, I guess if they require it.
Wai, Vatican elders can produce chimeras? What kind of foul sorcery is this?
Oh no, mr simple has found out - release the killer catgril nuns to silence him!
As with yesterdays post on the same subject i just came here for the boobs.
just when you thought the fake interpreter was going to be the craziest thing to come out of Nelson Mandela's funeral, I give you this tasty bit of conspiracy theory.
That's much better than the story I saw claiming Michelle has opted for separate but equal living arrangements in the White House as she prepares her divorce suit. Another marriage ruined by an ill-considered selfie.
Beneficent government Medicaid expansion puts more people at risk of the government seizing their estate when they die
Plot point for an upcoming dystopian novel? Team of Medicaid actuaries goes out and starts killing people so their estates can be billed to keep Medicaid/the state solvent?
I'm still waiting for someone to run with the whole Keynesian serial killer idea.
I've got it. "The Mad Bomber Krugman". Starring Paul Krugman as a serial bomber trying to create economic success.
"Look at the value I've created! The rebuilding! This block will be booming!"
Hasn't this been tested by the "Devil's Night" practices out in Detroit of burning abandoned buildings?

Henry VIII dissolved the estates of the Catholic parishes to acquire funding for his extravagent spending and wars. It's not out of the realm of possiblity that a President would set things up so that they could use Medicaid as a lever to absorb and liquidate private assets, even if they're relatively low in value.
I also believe that the next step here will be to allow the state to pursue heirs' personal assets when the amount owed exceeds the value of the estate.
Once that happens, serfdom will have returned. Which is the goal here.
Don't believe me?
Student loans - nondischargeable
Tax debt - nondischargeable
Child support - nondischargeable
Medical debt - about to be nondischargeable
Add in heritability and feudalism is good to go.
Yeah, no.
So Medicaid is simply a loan?
Droning weddings? It's what we DO, man!
I just had an idea if I ever get married - drone bomb the post-ceremony exit with rice instead of having the guests throw it!
Getting the license for your drone would be the hard part...
"It's baffling that over a quarter-century in which presidents of both parties have relentlessly sought to assert powers the Constitution never granted them they should be so meek about using the pardon powers that our constitutional system unquestionably gives them."

New ObamaCare fees coming in 2014
Most insurers aren't advertising the ObamaCare taxes that are added on to premiums, opting instead to discretely pass them on to customers while quietly lobbying lawmakers for a break.
But one insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, laid bare the taxes on its bills with a separate line item for "Affordable Care Act Fees and Taxes."
The new taxes on one customer's bill added up to $23.14 a month
My "favorite" is the 3.5 percent user fee to sell medical plans on the HealthCare.gov Web site. Bastards.
3.5 percent user fee to sell medical plans on the HealthCare.gov Web site.
I'd protest having to pay it on the grounds that nobody is actually selling plans on the website because it doesn't fucking function.
my wife's grandfather is an insurance broker. he's just selling outside the exchange.
Fingers crossed - I might finally get to shoot Judge Judy this weekend. The squeeze and I have a tentative date at the NRA range on Sunday morning.
Let us know how it goes.
ooh. Fun.
Oh! Oh, never mind.
The way Prins saw it, that meant health insurance via Medicaid is hardly "free" for Washington residents 55 or older. It's a loan, one whose payback requirements aren't well advertised. And it penalizes people who, despite having a low income, have managed to keep a home or some savings they hope to pass to heirs, Prins said.
With an estimated 223,000 adults seeking health insurance headed toward Washington's expanded Medicaid program over the next three years, the state's estate-recovery rules, which allow collection of nearly all medical expenses, have come under fire.
Call me heartless bastard, if you wish, but why should anybody expect to shield their assets from being used to satisfy medical expenses?
I have heard it repeatedly: "OMG, it's so horrible, Mr X had cancer (or old age), and the hospital provided hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical treatments, and now they want their money! They think he should sell his house and give them the money! Ohh, what a cruel world!"
Sorry. If you want the kids to end up with the house, don't rack up a million dollar hospital bill on your way out the gate.
Or sell the house to the kids to pay the medical bill.
"We're spending our kids' inheritance!"
No, the way to avoid govt taking your stuff when you die is to set up a revocable trust. This is my daughter's area of law.
Ironically, my daughter is a prog whose career is now involved with avoiding the long arm of the tax collector.

You must dissonate your cognate, my son.
That's all obviously true, but if I was walking around telling people I was giving them free health care, but buried in the fine print was language allowing me to seize their estate when they died, they'd lock me away.
The disclaimers on this aspect of the Medicaid expansion should be AT LEAST as prominent as those required to be made by reverse mortgage salespeople.
Well, this isn't new to the ACA. It's always been part of Medicaid. It's just that the ACA is sweeping more people under the Medicaid umbrella.
But yes, there's some "fine print" involved with Medicaid that should be a bit more prominent on the OCare website. I suspect all the website says is FREE SHIT HERE.
Right, but the ACA changed the target population and as a result the covered services.
Before, in general you didn't end up on Medicaid until you were getting nursing home care and had exhausted all other assets (and generally you were over 65 at that point).
Now, the relaxed qualification rules for Medicaid, combined with the deliberate destruction of the individual insurance market, can mean that you end up on Medicaid in your 50's after your existing private plan is cancelled. So that moves the whole Medicaid estate recovery problem into people's working lives, instead of being something that applies to end-of-life care for the very elderly only.
So that moves the whole Medicaid estate recovery problem into people's working lives, instead of being something that applies to end-of-life care for the very elderly only.
This. A lot of people who were never intended to be, and never planned to be, Medicaid recipients are going to get pushed into the program only for their heirs to find out they signed away whatever modest estate they may have had when the ACA website merrily told them "Congratulations! You qualify for Medicaid in your state!"
The disclaimers on this aspect of the Medicaid expansion should be AT LEAST as prominent as those required to be made by reverse mortgage salespeople.
Lizzie Warren is on the case!
Can we expand the right to check out with assistance? My father's mother went through that. Burned through maybe $350k in assets to care for her senilie dementia. Was the most frugal woman on earth. If someone would have sat her down on her last truly lucid day and told her, "okay, you're going to spend $350k and leave your kids nothing", she'd have stood in front of the LIRR train.
To be clear, her family would rather she had the care than they had the money, but she almost assuredly would not have felt the same.
And it was HER money (not to mention her life). Sometimes these people fucking make me sick. I don't plan on getting an inheretance but I do plan on leaving one...multiple, off shore, numbered accounts as well as the Auagpb bank.
In OH, at least, one can establish a revocable trust for all your assets. The state can't touch that, so it is left for your heirs. Otherwise you have to spend your assets down to $1500 before you can get the state to pay for nursing home care.
Can we expand the right to check out with assistance?
You mean teh death panelz?
But, yeah, that can be a rough situation for any family. My Parents have both told me to "take them hunting Cheney style" if they ever lose their minds and to have them cremated to cut down on funeral expenses.
don't rack up a million dollar hospital bill on your way out the gate
The real sticky wicket here is how much choice the patient has in the first place about the care they receive. And furthermore, how well informed they are that their care will have strings/costs attached to it.
Again and again, this all comes down to people who are generally unwilling to make hard choices and thus expect everyone else to cover the costs of their indecision.
If you want the kids to end up with the house, don't rack up a million dollar hospital bill on your way out the gate.
Or divvy up your estate beforehand so you die with the $1,000 for which you "sold" your kids the house.
Anyway, your treatment may or may not be in your control at that point ("We're sorry Mr. Brooks, you didn't have a DNR order on file, so that final defibrillator and emergency open-heart surgery that failed to restart your heart is going to cost your heirs your entire estate. Guess you shouldn't have a racked up a million dollar medical bill. Better luck next time.")
Also, the hospital in this particular case gets paid either way - the estate is going to the government to reimburse the payments made by Medicaid to the hospital, not to the hospital in exchange for the medical care. Two points here: I doubt many of the people who are going to get shoved into the expanded Medicaid system under the ACA really planned on becoming participants, and even fewer will probably be aware of the recovery provision until it comes due on their death. Of course you always have the option of going without insurance and letting the IRS slowly confiscate your estate on an annual basis via ACA penalties, but either way you're paying the government for the privilege of dying with medical coverage they forced you to have.
There's a five year look-back for Medicaid, so do it now.
I mean the smartest thing would be to have it in a trust, but the people who are going to end up on Medicaid probably don't have a large enough estate to make it worthwhile to hire an estate planner/attorney and make that happen.
Quitclaiming the house to your kids on your 65th birthday and giving them cash on the sly for the tax payments might work though (saying you own it outright).
Or divvy up your estate beforehand so you die with the $1,000 for which you "sold" your kids the house.
Already ahead of you.
yup, not to mention medicaid aside the simple value difference, if over the gift tax limit, can be calculated as direct income for the receiveing party.
Ideally you'd do it while you're old, but still relatively healthy. If you wait until you're already on your way out, you're probably fucked.
I might finally get to shoot Judge Judy this weekend.
How can you have a gun and never shoot it?
I just cleaned some guns, yesterday, so I should go get them dirty. It's actually fairly "warm". If the wind lays down...
How can you have a gun and never shoot it?
Some people can't just setup in the backyard when they want to do some shooting. Sucks to be them.
Or sell the house to the kids to pay the medical bill.
Of course, that only works if you *have* kids to sell.
You also want to time the market to get a good return. Those suckers are hardly ever cheap to buy.
You could check with Shreek; he's a market whizz!
Oh, Sevo, regarding http://reason.com/blog/2013/12.....nt_4202074
I was unable to find the proper citation (It's been over twelve years since I last saw it), so I'll have to retract the statement as factual and label it as possibly apocryphal. Thwe strategm, however, does play into the 'fear uncertainty and doubt gameplan modern would-be monopolists use.
UCS,
I asked since it is one of those 'common sense' things that I think has been debunked, sorta like the QWERTY keyboard 'market failure' myth.
I think Shermer did so in Mind of the Market. If I can find it, I'll let you know.
Bloomberg on Target data hacks:
..."At least 11 customers are now pursuing class-action suits against the retailer,"...
Pretty sure that's 11 *LAWYERS*.
..."The U.S. Federal Trade Commission wants to offer some [guidance] [on data security]"...
IOWs we need MORE REGULATIONS!
Well,
..."Even if the Target hacking ends up seeming avoidable, consumers may face problems proving that the breach actually cost them anything."...
So no one can show damages, but we need MORE REGULATIONS, 'cause stuff!

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE HEALTH CARE
I also believe that the next step here will be to allow the state to pursue heirs' personal assets when the amount owed exceeds the value of the estate.
"And, finally, to my faithful and loving wife, and to my beautiful children, I bequeath the unpaid balance of my end-of-life care, in the amount of $642,863.11."
The federal government is reportedly working on new regulations for face and hand transplants.
"Why, if it isn't my old friend, Mr. McGreg. With a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg."
I'll bet you won't be allowed to use cinnamon for an antiseptic anymore.
But the price will go up to an arm and a leg.
Someone get Fukuyama on the horn - I have a pressing bioethics question only a 'Top Man' like he can answer.
Is it still masturbation if you're using someone else's hand?
I was gonna say 'dutch rudder' but that's not quite right either
Sometimes a phrase can be so implicitly descriptive one need never have heard it to get a perfect/disturbing visual. When AI understands the above joke the world will come to an end...after the AI is done laughing its PCBs off.
They needed a ruling for that? The hotel and motel managers are a bunch of pussies. Any of them could've perfectly say to authorities "Fuck You!" and there would have been NOTHING they could do about it because if the LA authorities had taken those records by force without a warrant, it would have rendered those records USELESS in ANY case against ANY defendant.
Third party doctrine.
And you're wrong about them seizing records and the records being useless - courts *love* to give passes of 'unintentional' or 'unknowing' or 'good faith' errors and 3PD give the police cover for that.
Yeah, it's not the like the cops can make it miserable to the point of impossible to operate your business if you don't cooperate.
"Hmmm, looks like you maybe have some prostitutes working the area here. Has your hotel ever been used to facilitate the sale of drugs? Are those mouse droppings in the corner over there?"
We need regulations because reconstructive plastic surgeons have this persistent habit of attaching hands backwards.
And did you see what happened to the Kardashian family?!
Ya know, there is an opportunity there for a person to donate a non-organ body part upon their death for a fee to be paid to their family, that could cover some of the undischarged medical expenses...what am I saying? The gubmint will never allow dirty moneys to change hands.
Of course not. They'll do what is already being talked about in the UK - *opt-out* for organ donation.
Ironically, my daughter is a prog whose career is now involved with avoiding the long arm of the tax collector.
This may come as quite a surprise, but people like Warren Buffett and Tom Steyer do not file a 1040EZ.
