MTA Pilot Testing Various Technology to Detect People Who Have Fallen Onto Subway Track

An average of 49 people a year are killed every year due to falling onto the tracks, according to the MTA

So far this year, 144 riders have been hit by subway trains, and 52 have died. On average, 134 people have been hit and 49 killed each year since 2001, according to MTA data.

"It makes sense for the MTA to treat this serious problem with serious study," Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign said.
