Administration Officials Worried Obama's Promise that People Could Keep Their Plans Wasn't Right, and Let Him Make It Anyway

We already know that administration policymakers were aware that President Obama's promise that people who like their plans can keep them under Obamacare was not true, because estimates built into early regulations indicated that many plans would lose their grandfathered, protected status.
A report in today's Wall Street Journal indicates that senior White House advisers were also concerned that the promise could not be fulfilled, but decided to let the president make it anyway:
When the question arose, Mr. Obama's advisers decided that the assertion was fair, interviews with more than a dozen people involved in crafting and explaining the president's health-care plan show.
But at times, there was second-guessing. At one point, aides discussed whether Mr. Obama might use more in-depth discussions, such as media interviews, to explain the nuances of the succinct line in his stump speeches, a former aide said. Officials worried, though, that delving into details such as the small number of people who might lose insurance could be confusing and would clutter the president's message.
"You try to talk about health care in broad, intelligible points that cut through, and you inevitably lose some accuracy when you do that," the former official said.
The former official added that in the midst of a hard-fought political debate "if you like your plan, you can probably keep it" isn't a salable point.
So they apparently decided the president should repeatedly make a promise that wasn't true, and whose impacts would be felt by millions of Americans, simply because they hoped that would make it easier to sell the legislation they wanted to pass.

I have never heard so many ways of not calling a lie a lie.
The fact is, these evil fuckers will tell any lie, throw anyone under the bus, pay any bribe, extort anyone, even murder people to get what they want. What they want is their boot on our necks.
I wish Habeus was around to sugarcoat this for me.
There's no sugarcoating it: Obama's sales pitch for ObamaCare lost some accuracy.
These are the people who said that Bush, Romney and Ryan were liars? That last year's election was a "battle" between "truth" and "lies?" That criticism of Obamacare was a collection of "lies and exaggerations?"
From Obama on down, this administration is the biggest collection of frauds since Richard Nixon declared that he was not a crook.
"The fact is, these evil fuckers will tell any lie, throw anyone under the bus, pay any bribe, extort anyone, even murder people to get what they want."
And most of the media will say "Look over there! Bush!"
This is basically a euphemism for 'sometimes you have to lie.'
An Obama Voter's Cry of Despair.
So you're a moron then.
I find it hard to believe that anyone had to elect him even once to see what he is. He always was a racist, marxist leaning totalitarian and never made any secret about it.
Suthen, you left out the part about being a thuggish Daley machine apparatchik.
What Irish said.
But.. but... my friends would call me a racist if I didn't vote for him!
Solution? Get a better class of friends.
Solution: don't tell your friends what you did in the voting booth.
"Mitt Romney presented a confusing and unrefined alternative"
He didn't give my progressive-white-guilt-o-meter any twinges of self satisfaction.
How could staffers foresee that not all water carriers would carry the water on this falsehood when it inevitably came to bite commoners in the ass?
Since Obamacare my policy at work has changed three times in three years, and starting in 2015, we will have to take physical assessment to keep our insurance.
All these slavers can fuck off!!
I was under the impression that medical underwriting was verboten under the ACA, why then would you have a physical assessment?
It depends. You can require it for Large Group and/or Stop Loss products.
This doesn't help at all. If they wanted to use a short, but at least arguably accurate, political line, they could have said something like:
"If you have a high quality health plan, you'll be able to keep it, and if you don't, then you'll be able to buy one."
Instead they went for a complete lie.
..."they could have said something like:
"If you have a high quality health plan, you'll be able to keep it, and if you don't, then you'll be able to buy one.""
In which case, even low-info voters might have detected the foul odor and told 'em to get lost.
Of course Obama's claims were untrue, but I really don't see what the fuss is about. Everybody knows that Obama is a politician. Politicians lie for a living. Why are so many people feigning surprise?
The politicians behind the 16th Amendment made sure that no voter would think that its provisions would materially increase his taxes. FDR promised that no worker would ever pay more than 2% of his wages for the new social security program. Medicare was sold as a mere $23/year tax at most, just a 0.35% bump in the payroll tax applicable only to the first $6600 of earnings.
Even worse than the lying to raise taxes and expand government's reach in the domestic economy, politicians lie to start wars. Public support for every war is build on a foundation of outright lies, half-truths, and propaganda-fueled hatred.
The politicians behind these schemes all lied to get them passed. Do Obama's opponents think he is more virtuous than past politicians, and should therefore be held to a higher standard?
To me the thing is not so much that he lied, but that real people are getting fucked over by this and nobody on the Democrat side of the aisle seems to give a shit about it.
It's all "there were going to be winners and losers, and I guess those guys are the losers. Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet. "
What irks me most is that the majority of government believers will simply shrug off the fact that Obama's no honest statesman.
The left pitched Obama as being some kind of breakthrough, an honest guy who would transform American politics from corruption into virtuousness. Of course such hopes were always silly, but the fact Obama has, by any objective measure, increased political corruption should be enough for his supporters to dump his ass. But they won't: Cognitive dissonance reigns supreme.
Gee, it sure would have been nice if all those "fact checkers" had told us it was a lie AT THE TIME.
They were far too busy calling Romney and Ryan liars.
War on womenz?
Flipping through the channels this morning, that was an(almost)exact banner underlining MHP's show on MSNBC.
When you can't actually win an argument, just rely on hysteria and histrionics.
Binders! Dogs on car roofs!

Are you kidding? They were working overtime trying to come up with a way to claim Palin might have claimed to see Russia from her house!
They had important business!
"You try to talk about health care in broad, intelligible points that cut through, and you inevitably lose some accuracy when you do that," the former official said.
That's not necessarily true. Witness: "Fuck you, that's why!"
The left doesn't care when its guy lies. Besides, Americans just don't know what's best for them. I mean, we should have universal health care and all that because...because other countries do! No need for cost-benefit analysis because Americans are too stupid to understand anyway.
You try to talk about health care in broad, intelligible points that cut through, and you inevitably lose some accuracy when you do that
"If you like you healthcare plan, you'll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away from you, no matter what"
That isn't a lack of accuracy. That is a declaration with no room for wiggle.
Yeah, but it came from Obo, so he meant well.
Herewith a link to a supercut of Obama assuring us that, if we like our current insurance plan, you can keep it. More than a dozen times.

Jesus fucking Christ I had no idea how many times he repeated that.
Also I like Biden grinning like a smug jackass right as the start before Obama starts dropping steaming loads of shit on the electorate.
Adviser: Yes, Mr. President... but you gain millions of low-information voters!
*a broad smile slowly spreads across the President's face*
...President Obama's promise that people who like their plans can keep them under Obamacare was *A GODDAM LIE*,'...
Peter, let's show a bit more honesty.
It depends what your definition of "you" is.
