San Francisco-area police shot and killed a 13-year-old boy who was armed with a toy assault rifle, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident began about 3 p.m. Tuesday when deputies received reports of a "male subject" walking through Santa Rosa carrying a gun. Police located the subject, identified by the San Francisco Chronicle as Andy Lopez, carrying what appeared to be an assault rifle. Deputies ordered Lopez to drop the weapon. It wasn't immediately clear what prompted officers to open fire but they did, striking Lopez multiple times.

The teen was declared dead at the scene.
