Glenn Greenwald, Having Introduced Us to Edward Snowden, Heads to New Media Start-Up

How appropriate the news was leaked. Glenn Greenwald, who has now quite famously become part of the Edward Snowden leak stories by reporting them via The Guardian (and by having his partner temporarily detained in England over them), is leaving his current job. BuzzFeed got the scoop:
Glenn Greenwald, the lawyer and blogger who brought the Guardian the biggest scoop of the decade, is departing the London-based news organization, for a brand new, large-scale, broadly-focused media outlet, he told BuzzFeed Tuesday.
Greenwald published revelations from former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden about the extent of American and British domestic spying and about officials deception about its scope. He said he is departing for a new, "once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity" with major financial backing whose details will be public soon.
"My partnership with the Guardian has been extremely fruitful and fulfilling: I have high regard for the editors and journalists with whom I worked and am incredibly proud of what we achieved," Greenwald said in an emailed statement. "The decision to leave was not an easy one, but I was presented with a once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity that no journalist could possibly decline."
A spokesperson for The Guardian said the parting is amicable. Greenwald said more news about this new media project will be forthcoming. He wasn't ready to provide too many details as yet, because, you know, leak.

Edward Snowden gets a small apartment in Moscow, I suppose.
"Edward Snowden gets a small apartment in Moscow, I suppose."
Better than a small cell at Leavenworth.
Crazy how that works, huh?
I can just picture Obama stroking a cat while he sits staring at multiple screens overlooking Moscow streets hoping to get a glimpse of Snowden. All the while gently caressing a 'release the drone' button with a finger on the other hand.
The cat gets to press the button. They have a mouse-shaped cursor that blinks and squeaks when the facial recognition database has a match for a drone-worthy adversary.
Luckily, Greenwald isn't American, or he might be reclassified from "journalist journalist" worthy of First Amendment protections to "blogger, not journalist" subject to summary capture and disappearance.
Oh wait, he is American. Hope the new outfit qualifies as a "newspaper", whatever that means.
...for a brand new, large-scale, broadly-focused media outlet.
Limey Leaks?
Greenwald is an american jewish lawyer.
And isn't that just the sort of cover a filthy limey would choose in order to infiltrate 'Murika.
Scott, I'm not jumping down your throat about it, but calling Snowden a "leaker" is what the Obama-partisan media is doing so they don't have to call him by the more honorable term "whistleblower." It's a disgusting bit of semantics they are playing. You can "leak" anything, for good or bad; Snowden is a whistleblower.
It's true. I'm leaking right now, in fact.
Pissing while commenting on your phone?
Other way around.
^OK. He knows what the USG is doing your tax money and tells you about it. He's a reporter.
agreed
I tend to agree--let's avoid the pejorative.
"Leaker" is also a term used in hospitals.
You don't want to know.
Yes, yes we do. If we must face the horrors of this world, I need ways to describe it accurately.
Blood! Blood all over the place! It's squirting up the walls! His guts are spilling out.
If you're Kilgore Trout, a leak is a mirror. So a leaker is a glazier?
+1 Breakfast of Champions
Vonnegut was very liberal/libertarian in his political philosophy.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for him. I am happy to see a couple of Peanuts are fans.
Palin's Buttplug|10.15.13 @ 8:31PM|#
"Vonnegut was very liberal/libertarian"
Maybe I missed it; got a cite on the 'libertarian' claim?
Voonegut was anti-war, secularist, and pro-drug legalization.
You know, "libertarian" does not mean just anti-tax.
You have no trademark and don't get to define the term yourself.
"Voonegut was anti-war, secularist, and pro-drug legalization."
So, sorta like Tony? Yeah, that screams "libertarian"!
"You know, "libertarian" does not mean just anti-tax."
Correct, it has to do with a distaste for government, which sorta leaves you out. And if memory serves, Vonnegut also.
"You have no trademark and don't get to define the term yourself."
I see. And you get to throw the term around as if you had a clue?
But you love GOP government, Sevo.
Are you an Aborto-Freak? I have never asked.
Palin's Buttplug|10.15.13 @ 8:54PM|#
"But you love GOP government, Sevo."
You are a lying piece of shit.
Find (1) defense of the GOP except as it relates to idjits like you claiming the rethugs 'shut down the gov't!' or some such.
Right here
linky goes right back here.
That's kind of the point...
The only source I can find is the claim by PB...
Got it.
I was seriously asking, and natch shreek had no evidence.
It's been a while since I re-read any of his books, but I'm damned if I can remember anything that painted him as other than a late 20th C liberal.
Vonnegut was never depicted as a straight-up libertarian but he shared many beliefs with this movement.
For crying out loud, does everything have to be TEAM! TEAM! with you guys?
Palin's Buttplug|10.15.13 @ 9:29PM|#
"Vonnegut was never depicted as a straight-up libertarian but he shared many beliefs with this movement."
I ask for evidence and you give me this happy horse-shit? Fuck off.
"For crying out loud, does everything have to be TEAM! TEAM! with you guys?"
Team?
You claimed he was libertarian. I asked for evidence. You get butt-hurt because you have none and then beat a brand new strawman.
Are you that idjit from Kos who got busted by O'care? Are you that dumb?
Quit lying, Sevo.
Vonnegut was very liberal/libertarian in his political philosophy.
I claimed Vonnegut was a HYBRID. I never claimed he was a libertarian.
Palin's Buttplug|10.15.13 @ 9:43PM|#
"Quit lying, Sevo.
Vonnegut was very liberal/libertarian in his political philosophy."
Oh, excuse you for the sophistry! Who do you think is fooled?
Fuck off, asshole.
Except that he wasn't a hybrid in any way. I love Vonnegut's work, particularly Cat's Cradle, but he is in no way libertarian.
He had a few points of commonality, but those points of commonality are the same ones that many liberals share with libertarians.
He was anti-war, opposed to drug prohibition, etc. That doesn't change the fact that he was a straight up liberal. Along with Hunter S. Thompson and Christopher Hitchens he was a liberal that I liked even though I often disagreed with him, but he was in no way libertarian.
So is "spitter".
IT'S A TRAP
I really hope the financial backer is the Koch brothers. A lot of progressives have already turned on Greenwald, but that would still produce some hilarity.
Did anyone catch 60 Minutes this week? Did anyone catch Morely Safer correcting that genius science kid for saying Barack Obama instead of President Obama?
What's up with that? I didn't find it offensive at all. Kid was being a kid and clearly didn't mean disrespect. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. I always get paranoid after a bowl of oatmeal at night.
How dare he not call the King by his royal title!
The kid was clearly racist and needed correction.
And that disrespectful racist kid has already done more to improve the lives of people than the God Emperor.
I remember some on the right getting upset about a newspaper or show referring to "mr. Bush".
Seems like really reaching to be upset about a paper doing it. A kid in a science fair?
I believe it's considered ok to refer to US Presidents in writing as Mr, so long as the first time they are mentioned the term President is used and this was a point of discussion during Bush's term (I do not know if prior presidents were generally, or not generally, referred to as Mr. in print).
As for the kid - he spoke Barack's name as he talks about him with his friends and family and likely meant no disrespect, but for Morely Safer to correct him and then for 60 minutes to specifically use that portion on-air (assuming it wasn't live) versus allowing a retake (something they'd give their friends of course) is beyond worthless.
I mean what's the win here? A corporation with tons of resources and tons of experience showed up a kid?
Congrats to them. Maybe next week they can show themselves up by hiring some big, strong thugs to prove if they really wanted to, 60 Minutes could easily steal candy from babies.
Worthless.
& note - the fact they did this to the kid - likely doesn't have anything to do with the kid - it's likely people at the news organization don't like his parents (or possibly any political thoughts the kid had) due to them being on the wrong side of whatever debate.
& this was pay back - "see - we can make your kid look stupid"
Wait... People still watch 60 minutes?
Maybe we should get off of Rufus's lawn.
Please don't. Manure is great fertilizer for the grass!
You wound me, sir. I expected better from a Canuckistanian.
If it were Bush, he'd have said 'we call him the idiot'. And the audience would applaud.
Yeah, I saw that. I knew a guy who punched Safer in the mouth in Vietnam. Apparently he was an ass back then, too.
60 Minutes is still on? Wasn't their 15 minutes up like 45 minutes ago?
Holy crap, the bitter tears of liberals is the world's sweetest nectar.
Obamacare will double my monthly premiums, says Daily Kos diarist.
Since a libertarian is just a liberal who's been smacked in the face by reality, this guy might be a friend of ours one day.
Let the hatred rule you, young Padawan. Let it lead you to H&R.
That was mentioned sometime earlier, it has a bonus appearance from an old friend of our's, Joe from Lowell.
Joe from Lowell made this place a better site.
The only way he could have made this a better site is if he took you with him when he left.
Or ran over him on the way out...
So you disagreed with him at times? So what? Do you want a bunch of lemmings who pat your fanny after each utterance of yours?
You are seriously into your "Team" too much.
Says the guy who takes every opportunity to suck the President's dick while accusing everyone who disagrees with him of being Republicans.
Back to dick sucking by the homophobe.
I've come to the conclusion that this is the result of just plain stupidity.
At first I wondered whether shreek was being clever. Nope, just stupid and hoping others are dumb enough to buy it.
Some of the comments are just... special:
"Your rates aren't going up; you're just being forced to switch to another plan with higher rates!"
The KosKids have such a totalitarian bioner right now, if they don't get to throw teabaggers in camps, they'll start throwing each other in them.
"He said something bad about the Lightbringer's insurance! Unmutual! Get him!"
Someone needs to look up the definition of insurance, and brush up on how percentages work
You can't blame Obamacare because you selected doubleplusungood insurance, comrade! Holy shit.
You can't blame Obamacare because you selected substandard insurance.
"You're too stupid to know what your own needs are and take care of them yourself."
What a thoroughly vile mindset.
"What am I missing?"
Well, a whole lot of brain-cells to begin with. Did you think unicorns were going to pay for all that 'free shit'?
Remind us, how did Dumbya pay for Medicare Part D?
0/10
I would be happy if so called "libertarians" would swear an oath of hatred to both parties and promise to only vote LP or not vote again.
Unfortunately, here at HitandRun posters are loyal to the GOP as a form of Stockholm Syndrome - "the GOP keeps fucking me in the ass but I can't waste my vote on the LP! SO keep fucking me in the ass please Mr GOP!".
Palin's Buttplug|10.15.13 @ 9:01PM|#
Hey! Look over there!
I voted L for prez and a mix of R and D for the other offices last election.
Also, what Sevo said.
An oath? Drama much?
Who here voted R instead of L? Produce quotes, you mendacious cunt. And let me spell it out for you, since you're a dishonest piece of shit: I voted for Gary Johnson in 2012 and didn't vote in 2008.
John, Mike M, wareagle, Red Rocks, SouthronBoy, SIV, and others I cannot recall.
I voted LP Pres every year since 1988 except for 04/08 when I voted to punish the GOP for the Bushpig years.
Which is a fine act of anti-gov defiance mirrored by the H&R contributors.
I said to produce quotes, liar. John and Mike M, I'll believe. So you have two self-professed conservatives so far. Fail.
Tulpa. I voted for Romney out of a searing hatred for Barack Obama. I stand by that vote given the horror show that the first year of his second term has been.
Voting Republican does not make you a Republican if you're only voting that way out of hatred for a particular Democrat. There are plenty of Republicans that I'd vote for Ron Wyden or Mark Udall over and that doesn't make me a Democrat.
And Tulpa was roundly mocked for it.
REPUBLICANS EVERYWHERE THEY'RE UNDER MY BED
More bullshit.3 out of 18 staffers voted for Obama in 2008.
I wrote in Ron Paul's name; is that still considered "voting Republican"?
Yes, voting Ron Paul is a vote for the GOP.
Sorry, he is an Aborto-Freak. Anyone who wants a police state to manage preggo women is a Big State Man.
In other words, Ron Paul opposes antepartum infanticide, and that just gets your goat.
I am a hard-liner on body rights. The GOP will not govern my gonads if I have any say.
If I took some drugs that killed by sperm/egg combo the GOP wants to imprison me for omelet murder.
Unless, of course, one hasn't yet been born. Until then, you have no "body rights".
No body rights after birth either - must have health insurance - must pay simply for being born.
Don't need health insurance? Too bad - your body is not yours, it is the states because it costs the state money (because of state legislation).
Oh, and in case you get any ideas on possibly leaving the country (not that the alternatives are much better)... you'll have to pay to do that too.
This is how you get ants!

"Remind us, how did Dumbya pay for Medicare Part D?"
Remind us, why should anyone deal with your strawmen?
Is this supposed to be an argument?
Yup. He's a moron.
"Not at all. I just thought you were going to pay my, I mean, *your*, fair share."
Comment by OP:
Response:
Emphasis mine
Yessir! I go to Kos Kids for advice on the insurance I need always!
Based on this argument, I assume this Kos Kid would be in favor of ending food stamps.
I mean, right now those people are using extra food and he clearly believes such individuals should pay for something instead of getting it for free.
Right?
Well actually, he hasn't been using extra. He's young and healthy and using what he pays for.
It's also not 'using extra' if you have insurance and pay for anything not covered yourself.
Based on what he wrote, all of his health care was paid for by himself.
Someone pointed out that this guy has been a poster for years and therefore wasn't a troll. It got this response.
SLEEPER AGENT! Apparently this guy infiltrated years before Obamacare even existed and has said nothing to give himself away solely so that he could one day write an anti-Obamacare post and test the true believers.
Fucking heartless progressives always laughing at the misfortune of others!
BURN THE HEATHEN! HE OF THE CHURCH OF CRUZ MUST SUFFER BEFORE OUR GREAT LORD!
"So basically Kaiser raped you on renewal and tried to blame it on ACA. If this isn't proof that this whole industry needs reform nothing else is."
What "industry" would that be? Kaiser is not an insurance company, and it is a non-profit.
I knew brain-deads were going to blame the O'care disaster on KORPORASHUNS, but this guy's got a problem.
At least this stupid is easy to understand. See, the average cost of health care is a lot higher than whatever the diarist was paying. Therefore, he was mooching off the taxpayers. (getting kind of Randian here...)
That the people driving the average far above what this guy is paying are unusually sick or simply old doesn't enter this commentator's mind. That requires using some actual logic, and not just looking at numbers. But Science! is nothing more than numbers, so why should he bother?
As I mentioned in another thread, seems like the Kos community stole the 'low-information' line; begin by Limbaugh I believe.
Oh, the irony of know-nothings using it!
I heard Ed Schultz use the term "low-information voter" to describe limited government types long before Rush started using it.
Regardless, the phrase more accurately describes Schultz and his ilk than those who cause him to fret.
Schultz gets points then!
I tend to agree with you, cav.
No one in media is more low-info than Rush (King of the Rednecks) Limbaugh.
The sole purpose of his show is to sell prostate meds, boner pills, and baldness cures to aging Archie Bunker types.
Shorter Shriek:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0dzgSfFQu8
If there's anyone who knows what low-information looks like, it's Shriek.
It's been a very long time since I've listened to Limbaugh, but I remember him as being a pretty standard Establishment-type Republican, rather than a Populist-type. Of course, he would play up to the Populist crowd whenever it suited his purposes.
No, Oxy-Boy has put his finger to the wind and sided with the "anti-establishment GOP".
He could look up how insurance works. He used to have it. Under the "Affordable" Care Act, he won't. Even if he signs up.
CE|10.15.13 @ 9:01PM|#
"He could look up how insurance works."
Are you KIDDING?! He'd have to retract half of what he's posted!
You're asking for introspection and an honest reassessment of his world view.
Na' gon' happan.
Oh, the exchanges are working now?
Guy LaGuy had a CNN link that claimed 'success' for some 144,000 people.
Strangely, given all the incentives for Obo to report unambiguous "completions", I've yet to see a single one.
1.And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Zion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.
The "elect" in the Bible!
So it was total bullshit?
Sevo, as a racist teabagger you're obviously a rabid Christian. Get with the government program already!
Everything in the Bible is.
How much bigger about yourself you must feel to know you are smart enough and sanctimonious enough to be above the Bible.
So there is as yet not ONE SINGLE verified completion of the process through one of O'care's "exchanges"? Not ONE?!
After 2-1/2 weeks of the roll out of this amazing transformation of the purchase of medical insurance? Not ONE?
They better get a giant novelty certificate printed up for the first one.
Sounds like there have been some, though, especially through the state exchanges. Something like several hundred in Maryland.
There are over 150,000 in the state exchanges.
But the federal exchange?
Bupkus! A total fail.
Palin's Buttplug|10.15.13 @ 9:54PM|#
"There are over 150,000 in the state exchanges."
Over 150,000 WHAT? People who have logged on? People who have looked at rates and bailed?
What? And cite, please. None of the shit you claim re: Vonnegut.
The post is from September - prior to the federal exchange fuck-up.
What's up with that, I guess, is that Safer is important because he covers Important People, and if you don't give them proper Respect you diminish him.
Is that what Jack Daddy Frapp thinks?
