A.M. Links: Majority of Americans Oppose Syria Intervention, Ariel Castro Commits Suicide, Positive Pregnancy Tests on Sale at Craigslist

-
MoPo Productions Polls continue to show a majority of Americans opposed to US intervention in Syria. The eventual vote in Congress could become a major issue in the 2016 elections; Hillary Clinton has already come out in favor of authorization. Her support for the Iraq war a decade ago contributed to her 2008 primary loss. Meanwhile, Republicans like Ted Cruz are sounding like Democrats like Dennis Kucinich; Cruz warned the US military shouldn't act as "Al Qaeda's air force" by intervening in Syria. The resolution currently being considered by the Senate would limit the duration of US intervention and prohibit the use of ground forces. In the meantime, Sweden became the first European country to offer blanket asylum to Syrian refugees, of which there are now more than 2 million according to the UN., while Turkey's prime minister says his country is ready to join the anti-Syria coalition. He did not specify whether that meant Turkey's armed forces would participate. Russia's Vladimir Putin continues to warn Western powers against unilateral intervention, saying any action in Syria should be approved by the UN Security Council, where Russia has veto power.
- Two of the original sponsors of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, former Democratic presidential hopefuls Walter Mondale and Gary Hart, are participating in a lawsuit seeking to have the NSA's domestic data collection activities ruled unconstitutional.
- Al Qaeda is asking engineers to figure out how the terrorist group might be able to sabotage and shoot down drones the US operates.
- A judge in Ohio ordered a man who threatened police during 911 calls to wear an "idiot" sign outside the police station three hours a day for a week.
- Ariel Castro, the school bus driver who was sentenced to life in prison for holding three women captive in his home for nearly a decade, committed suicide in jail.
- Positive pregnancy tests for sale on Craigslist is a thing.

Positive pregnancy tests for sale on Craigslist is a thing.
Note: A fake positive is legal grounds to collect child support in New Jersey.
Shouldn't this have gotten an AM links hat tip from yesterday? I am sure I saw it there first, though I am not remembering who posted it.
Hat tips - that's so quaint.
Me, goddammit. I posted it.
IS that your picture at the top of A.M. links lamenting the lack of a hat tip?
How hard would it to be just dissolve a couple of birth control pills in water and pour it on a test strip?
I am pretty sure that would give a positive result.
The tests just test for progesterone I think.
Childbirth Simulator definitely educational, mostly horrifying
Need one of these for my Halloween Haunted House...
That would be awesome. Alien babies, snakes, spiders, chimeras, think of the horrifying possibilities.
just about everything you could need to experience a fake birth.
Morphine?
Fake conception?
The bone-crushing hand holding?
Fake C-Section?
Nicaraguan Puro an a glass of Laphroaig?
unless you can smell your wife's feces and feel anxious horror as your blue-faced baby emerges silent and unresponsive with the cord wrapped tight around its neck, then this is bullshit.
Presumably everyone turned out OK, I hope.
Yes. Everything worked out alright, thankfully.
child birth has to be the most undignified experience a human can go through...thank FSM i can pee standing up (accurately when not drinking).
...Cruz warned the US military shouldn't act as "Al Qaeda's air force" by intervening in Syria.
So what he's saying here is we should bomb both government and rebel forces?
The impression I got was he's saying we shouldn't bomb either one.
What, do nothing? What are we, Sweden?
Yeah, we may as well wear signs reading "Our Male Organs Are Very Tiny."
"Our Male Organs Are Very Tiny."
Hmm, that's not the Swedes then.
Ariel Castro, the school bus driver who was sentenced to life in prison for holding three women captive in his home for nearly a decade, committed suicide in jail.
Well, thanks for saving the tax payers money, shit bag.
And he did manage to complete his life sentence.
Good thing he did that plea deal, and kept the death penalty off the table...
"You can't kill me, I'd rather die."
It did shorten things and save Ohio some money.
He let Ohio down, one last time.
Give him a big hand, folks. He's here all week...
he made room for a non-violent drug offender.
No, he was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years. He still has 1,000 years to go.
It's disappointing. He deserved worse.
I was hoping for ten years of anal rape, at least.
Didn't your mom ever tell you that two wrongs don't make a right?
Yeah, I don't think anything they did to Castro would be a wrong.
I think raping a person is always wrong no matter what. Revenge is ugly and unbecoming.
Unless it's prison rape apparently.
I disagree and think any meaningful distinction between justice and revenge is illusory.
Well, I agree to a certain extent. I think that justice is illusory. This piece of shit getting raped or otherwise brutalized or even spending a long time in prison isn't going to do anything to make his victims' lives better or get back what he took from them. I think that the good that courts provide in criminal matters is to largely eliminate revenge. I understand the desire for revenge, but I really think it does no good and can only create more violence and evil in the world.
I'm not so sure.
I think his victims would enjoy knowing that he's getting anally raped in prison.
"'But he was a highway robber, he killed a man.' And what of it? Granted that as a murderer he deserved this punishment, what have you done, you wretched fellow, to deserve to watch it?"
They might. But then again they might hate the idea and be further traumatized by it.
Anyway, I am rather amazed and shocked that anyone here is condoning and promoting prison rape. Fuck that.
Really? Now I woudl think that a victim of repeated rape would not feel good thinking about someone else getting raped. I would think that they would want to put the whole time behind them. I really think it is fucked up how keen you are on eye-for-an-eye type revenge punishment. That is just fucked up and perverse.
I was hoping for ten years of anal rape, at least.
Have you tried going to bars?
Isn't that why we keep Warty around?
He doesn't fancy Hazel.
I was hoping for ten years of anal rape, at least
CALL ME
Can't imagine anyone wanting to claim the body. Maybe they could hire the Browns to bury him before Sunday?
As far as running gags go, I notice many more Ohio references floating around the news than Golden Girls ones.
Al Qaeda is asking engineers to figure out how the terrorist group might be able to sabotage and shoot down drones the US operates.
Unless those drones are helping them to topple Assad in Syria.
3 men charged with "disorderly conduct" for lawfully open carrying in Texas
Some woman freaks out over guys sitting around drinking coffee with unloaded long rifles, so she calls the police. Instead of investigating the situation and finding they are doing nothing wrong, the police harrass them and charge them with disorderly conduct.
Or "3 men soon to gain riches from taxpayers in Sec 1983 suit whilst cops face no consequences for mind boggling derpidity".
What about the woman?
Charged with a false alarm, or HERO?
However, San Antonio police Chief William McManus explained that the gun holder can still be charged with disorderly conduct if anyone, at any point, feels threatened.
Probably hero, according to the law.
if anyone, at any point, feels threatened.
I will eat a shoe if that is what the law really says. If it works that way with guns, shouldn't it work that way with anything? If I find your hat threatening are you guilty of disorderly conduct?
It doesn't say that.
It does say "(8) displays a firearm or other deadly weapon in a public place in a manner calculated to alarm;"
There's some mens rea there, opposed to the idiocy spouted by San Antonio police Chief William McManus.
"...calculated to alarm..."
So, no flags sticking out of the muzzle that say "BANG!" ?
An intent to alarm is awfully wishy-washy and one of the reasons why I am against the idea of mens rea or thoughtcrime based laws in general as a basis for prosecution (though it could be considered for punishment/restitution), rather than judged solely on acts of tangible property violations
Given that they were staging and filming this specifically as an "open carry demonstration" outside a Starbucks, it seems like the law could very well apply.
But it calls out the intent of the gun holder, not the overreaction of the bystanders. If they weren't waving it around our threatening anyone, there's no case.
First they need to exercise their 6A rights to get the name of the freaked-out woman who sicced the cops on them.
I would have guessed this took place in Austin, but apparently not. (And what's with the bloat on the TV channel's site?)
Yeah, that woman should* be personally liable for any damages they win when they sue.
(*)In a just universe, not under our system of laws.
I don't know. I think it is on the cops. People are allowed to be oversensitive idiots. But the cops should have told her that yes, people in Texas use guns pretty often and that there is no law against openly carrying them in public so get over it. Though for some reason, I thought Texas didn't allow open carry. Or does that only apply to hand guns? Or am I wrong?
No open carry of handguns, but things are moving in the right direction, I think.
I never realized Colorado was that much more enlightened than Texas. We have open carry everything...as long as you avoid Denver.
Texas isn't basically forcing Magpul to leave the state.
It only applies to handguns. You can open carry any type of rifle you want.
You are right, Zeb.
About the blame, that is.
This is what happens when the borders aren't protected from Yankee immigration. Damn the Supreme Court for Edwards v. California.
Mexico would like a word too.
The only real Yankees left are in ME, NH and VT and we have loads of guns and can carry them openly even if they are handguns, so fuck off with your enormous regional generalizations.
You're talking about the flinty, laconic, old-time New Englander. Do they still have those?
People who are freaked out by guns freak me out, so I guess this chick is committing disorderly conduct.
She's also sending the children a terrible message: if you see somebody doing something you don't like, it's virtuous to sic the State on them.
Damn, I thought Texas was supposed to be pretty good on guns.
If this happens in (non-Austin) Texas, then it's a really bad sign for the rest of the country.
TX laws are kinda pussy compared to KY.
So Im not worried.
Open carry is constitutionally protected in KY.
True. Open carry of pistols is still illegal in TX and FL.
And what was this "unloaded" bullshit in TX?
Texas is the California of the pro gun states.
EU wants to force car makers to put speed limiters in cars
The new regulations would mandate that all new cars be fitted with systems that can detect the prevailing speed limit and automatically keep the car from exceeding it.
This would never happen in the US. Police departments can't make money without writing tickets.
Well, actually, it would probably mean they would ramp up asset forfeiture.
I first heard this idea mooted 15 years ago. At the time, I suggested that I'd love to see computer hackers hack the system so that cars going to the vacation resorts on the beaches wouldn't be able to do more than 5 km/h, while cars in school zones would be forced to do 150.
Tough shit I guess if you need to try to pass a slow-moving vehicle quickly and safely.
Nobody needs to pass other vehicles
Nobody needs to pass other vehicles
REMAIN IN LINE AT ALL TIMES!
This would cause too much liability for the auto-makers. For reasons pointed out by WTF, among others.
Do you think the EU cares about that?
No, but the automakers have the ability to lobby.
It's so bad even the UK is warning against it. I'm sure the local governments are also against it for the ticket generating revenue reason you mentioned.
The Germans will also be pissed that it would render their autobahns useless. And they already do have a speed limiter, it's just set to 155mph
It also wouldn't work in the US because almost everyone drives 5-10 over (if not more) the limit all the time. And from what I recall, it is not too different in Europe.
If there are going to be speed limits, what I think they should do is to increase all highway limits by 20-25 MPH and then strictly enforce them.
Asset forfeiture only works if there's someone to buy the asset and convert it to cash for you. If no one can drive a car fast, there's no reason to buy fast cars. Hence the market collapses and police agencies are stuck with a big inventory of scrap.
Robbery suspects picked the wrong people to mug
And of course the comments lambast the would-be victims. "Victim blaming" is apparently a horrid crime unless you refuse to be a victim, then it's kosher.
Now, *those* are some "mug shots"!
"mugged" shots.
Revealed: UK Government let British company export nerve gas chemicals to Syria
"This is unacceptable! Someone must take responsibility!"
Someone will! Which is why the US is preparing a strike against Great Britain as this is being submitted.
Reminds me of the "Whiskey Priest" episode in *Yes Minister,* where the protagonist discovered British arms sales to terrorists, and salved his conscience by writing a mild and vague memo of protest.
Sodium Flouride can also be used as precursor chemical in the manufacture of toothpaste. Unless they knew the Syrians were planning to make nerve gas, it seems silly to criminalize the sale of common chemicals that have a large number of benign uses.
But what about my "purity of essence" you monster?!
They were going to put it in the water as part of a communist plot.
How long before toothpaste is kept behind the counter and you need to sign a log book to buy a tube?
I hear they implemented this in the UK decades ago.
A judge in Ohio ordered a man who threatened police during 911 calls to wear an "idiot" sign outside the police station three hours a day for a week.
Judge Bill Engvall?
That Ohio judge let me down, one last time.
In the meantime, Sweden became the first European country to offer blanket asylum to Syrian refugees...
Get ready for the influx of quitters, Sweden.
So the Swedish government is jealous that they don't have their own civil war?
The Norwegians got away too easy!
Time to kick some Sami ass!
They seem to be trying to set one up.
The best new citizens are those who were so popular at home they had to flee.
Uh, Zak, dude, you're describing many of the original european settlers in what is today the US.
And look what trouble they caused
And look what we did for the people who were already here.
They damn near did with all the rioting they had a few months ago. Maybe they're hoping the Syrians will be at odds enough with the existing African, Iraqi and Afghanistani population to keep them from forming a bloc against the state.
+1 No-Go Zone
Maybe they are betting that there won't be a whole lot of Syrians able to get to Sweden.
Ten "Swedes" have died fighting in Syria this year.
If Sweden's offering "blanket asylum", get ready for the influx of quilters.

300,000 attempts to view porn in Britain's Houses of Parliament
And half of those were from clicking on Sugar's tentacle-ykw links posted here.
To my naive view, that's a *lot* of porn.
Of course, half of it was dirty Jane Austen fanfic.
I am not married.
But I imagine being married could drive a man to view porn at work rather then at home.
Ariel Castro hung himself. Cleveland corrections had to let him down one last time.
Any word on reaction from the Browns?
Orient (the prison where Castro was) is in central Ohio.
Orient? Racist!
No way! Orient has like...two black people at least.
Shouldn't it have been in Eastern Ohio?
Ohio map-makers and prison-namers, letting me down one last time.
LOL, sorry to say.
No, Rich, that's an appropriate reaction.
I hope this event brings closure to the victims.
I suspect they will be annoyed that he escaped his punishment.
They spent 10 years in captivity. Chances are they attempted suicide themselves, or would have if he hadn't kept them chained to the wall.
Not everyone is obsessed with revenge.
Revenge, justice, poTAYto, poTAHto.
escaped his punishment.
Being so fucked looking at the black hole of your life in a prison cell and then hanging yourself is a pretty nice punishment if you ask me.
Plus he is dead...death is a more extreme punishment then life in prison in my opinion.
In prison he would have had pudding night and TV and maybe could have jerked off a few times....being dead those small pleasures are gone.
Al Qaeda is asking engineers to figure out how the terrorist group might be able to sabotage and shoot down drones the US operates.
I wish they would task their engineers to figure a way to paint eyes or something on those drones. They freak me out, like the witches in the original Clash of the Titans when I was a kid.

No shit. Let the lawsuits begin.
It's not like these things haven't happened before. There was a hotel in Las Vegas that was shooting death rays at the pool, and the Disney Opera House in LA drove up temperatures in neighboring buildings significantly and blinded drivers cresting the hill before they made it not shiny.
Turkey's prime minister says his country is ready to join the anti-Syria coalition. He did not specify whether that meant Turkey's armed forces would participate.
That probably means he will deploy troops to the border to repel refugees.

And use it as a cover to kill Kurds.
Well, always that!

Holy shit, gonna have to call this a bullshit ranking.
Fucking Finland is third? Indonesia is 38th? Russia is 64th? How the Hell are these rankings determined?
The largest economy on Earth isn't even in the top 100? Shit, there are a couple states that have larger economies than the top three listed nations, combined.

Yeah, the world may have SET the line (and I argue that), but YOU said that shit about crossing it.
Obama in Sweden. He just said, "First, I didn't set a red line, the world did"
Nahh...the exact quote was; "That Red Line....you didn't set that!"
According to Texas law, this type of conduct isn't illegal as long as the weapon is not loaded.
However, San Antonio police Chief William McManus explained that the gun holder can still be charged with disorderly conduct if anyone, at any point, feels threatened.
"It's a disorderly offense that officers will address accordingly," McManus said.
As we all know, cops are terrified of guns in civilian hands; it's an open and shut case.
Nice random placement of a reply.
It's P Brooks, he doesn't know how to thread.
Oh, he knows...he just refuses to truck with any threading.
I, for one, applaud his one man war on threading.
The "P" must stand for "Principled".
the gun holder can still be charged with disorderly conduct if anyone, at any point, feels threatened.
*** scratches chin ***
Does it have to be a *gun holder*?
"I feel threatened by your complete lack of a spine and the way it erodes my rights..."
Exactly.
"I feel threatened because I wasn't harming you in any way yet you summoned armed men."
I think there has to be a "reasonable person" threat test.
The courts use "Reasonable" without a clue as to what a real reasonable person thinks like.
Unfortunately, actual reasonable people are a shrinking minority in our society.

And, yet, yesterday Nick Gillespie, an intelligent man, said that Dems always love war, even though polls show the majority of them are against this one.
And the majority of Congressional Democrats voted against the Iraq War.
They love war when the President is TEAM BLUE.
Dems don't love war. ESTABLISHMENT Dems love war. The vast majority of Democrats are not establishment hacks like Pelosi and Kerry. For that matter, the entire media seems to be agitating in favor of it for some reason.
I will say I'm glad that so few normal Democrats are in favor of this war. At least they haven't completely lost their minds.
The media is agitating for war because that's the orders handed down by their masters in the CIA.
Oh wow, talk about a blast from the past. Look out guys, this guy has antediluvian derp.
The sales pitch for this war is eerily similar to the run up to Iraq.

Asshole is passing on the right.
Passing on the right (or the shoulder, or sidewalk) is normal driving for New York.
And New Yorkers are assholes.
I dont see the contradiction.
There isn't but it's so banal that it doesn't really need pointing out.
Passing on the right isn't so bad if the traffic is accommodating. But this guy's all over the place with his lane changes - and I'd bet all the cash in my wallet he's not signalling. I hate people like this who treat the road like their own personal racetrack, like the rest of the people out there are just in the way.

Reminds me of taking a cab from Chinatown to Uptown. Cabbie got on the FDR and then floored it. We were doing like 90-100, weaving in and out the whole way. The ride was over before I had a chance to shit myself. It was fast so I guess I owed him a good tip.
In GTA 4 I could make the lap in under 6 min in the Comet.
WTOP (DC news radio) this morning was talking about Syria. And i think it was Candy Crowley -- might not have been -- who said that calls into congressional offices are about 100-1 against any military action. But then she said that it wasn't really indicative of anything, as those who are in favor probably just aren't calling.
They also ran audio from a man claiming to be from the free Syrian army asking Americans to look into their hearts and help them.
They will say ANYTHING to justify their bullshit. They have absolutely no standards or morals. I'm not even sickened anymore, I'm just numb.
Like it matters, congress is going to do whatever the hell it wants regardless of what the voters have to say.
The voters' opinions are only relevant on trivial matters. In a democratic republic, the voters' representatives are charged to act in the interests of the nation at large. And that means that they will act in accordance with the wishes of the ruling elite a la TARP.
But then she said that it wasn't really indicative of anything, as those who are in favor probably just aren't calling.

IFH laughs at idiot Kiwis
NZ man goes kayaking off Western Australia, gets cornered by crocodile on island for two weeks.
So he didn't have a knife?
They prefer to call them Elven short-swords.
The article doesn't go into detail, but this article screams "idiot" to me; also lots of unanswered questions. If the croc was that agressive how did it not kill him in his sleep? He was there for two weeks. Also, check out the backstory; he'd already made bad decisions (the original yachter, his unfortunate beard choices).
That made me laugh (cruel, but I did):
"He travelled from Queensland to the Kimberley on a yacht whose owner was then jailed in the Northern Territory, leaving Mr Blair stranded for two months.
After hitching a lift with a solo yachtsman from the Territory to WA, he was dropped on Governor Island with 160 litres of water, some flour and dry stores.
But after realising he was unprepared for the Kimberley wilderness, three attempts to reach the mainland was thwarted by the massive crocodile."
I first came across the story here; it's a ~1MB, 2:30 interview with somebody from the area who thinks the guy is an utter idiot.
I would say "knows" he is an utter idiot rather than "thinks".
Served him right if a drop bear got him.

What was the one about the torture-killer that came out about 5 years ago? Wolf-something? That was horrible. There was no suspense, just an attempt to gross people out.
the US military shouldn't act as "Al Qaeda's air force"
OK, so correct me if I'm wrong, but... if our actions in Syria aid Al Qaeda, then the AUMF authorizes the President to use force against himself and the United States, right? Wouldn't the President be almost obligated to authorize a drone strike on himself, Kerry, Boehner, and anybody else who votes to attack Syria?
Only if it makes it through the Thursday kill list disposition matrix meeting.
I think the military now has a humanitarian mission to launch strikes against any government that indiscriminately slaughters innocent civilians and children in war, so yes.
Would aiding and abetting a known terror organization hostile to the United States be an impeachable offense?
Yes. There a people rotting in prison right now for doing less.
It's not illegal if the president does it.
BUT I LEARNED IT FROM YOU, MR PRESIDENT
Who wants to bet Chocolate Nixon or one of his media shitheels uses exactly that defense? Who wants to take a side bet that the obvious comparison to Nixon will then be ignored entirely?
It's not just impeachable--it meets the constitutional definition of treason.
Remember Obama's claim to fame in 2008 was that he was against the Iraq war from the start. Now that he is so willing to go into Libya, leaving it in chaos after a few good photo ops, and now Syria, it is almost as if he was such a lying sack of shit politician who opposed Iraq for political gain or something.
On a related note:
Yeah, but that was about supporting a Republican. This is about supporting a Democrat.
Oh, and you forgot his other big claim to fame: he was a black guy who liberals think speaks well (I still think he is an awful speaker).
Yeah. He's already escalated one war, more than tripling casualties, dramatically ramped up drone attacks, bombed a country into chaos, and is now itching to do it again to another country. And one of his rationales for asking for congressional permission now is that he might need it later for something even more serious. How can anybody assume he would have voted against the Iraq war, had he been in Congress at the time?

I know some of you are F1 fans. Did anyone else see the Top Gear Sydney special? It wasn't great but it contained one amazing thing. They had Marc Webber and his F1 car there at some track outside Sydney. And they were able to show just how insanely fast F1 cars are. There was a short course on this track that the Stig drove some new Mclaran supercar around in 1:13. Webber did the same course in 50 seconds. The F1 car was 23 seconds faster than one of the fastest production cars in the world driven by a professional driver. Then they took some motoGp champion and his thousand CC bike, and something called a V8 Super car, which seems to be the Ausie equivalent of NASCAR driven by a top driver and put it on the track with Webber and his F1 car. Over five laps the F1 car basically lapped the other two. When they crossed the finish line Webber was breathing down their necks waiting for his change to pass and lap them. F1 really is in a different league of speed.
Yeah, the acceleration and cornering at speed are just a whole different thing. I love how they have to be driving faster than I have ever gone in a car to actually make it around a corner at all. I think the F1 car Stig drove around the Top Gear track is still like 15 seconds faster than the fastest road legal car they have had.
It's not a particularly great movie, but Grand Prix (1966 with James Garner) really captures the speed of F1. And those cars were much more primitive...
Those cars were as fast in a straight line as the ones now. They just didn't have any down force and the breaks would heat up and practically stop working. The drivers in the 50s, 60s, and 70s were true daredevils. They killed three and four drivers a year in F1 back then. Even the most skilled drivers like Ron Clark, who was as good as anyone has ever been, often died in accidents.
A few years ago they sold one of the old 1930s Auto Union silver arrows at auction. That car had a top seed of near 200 mph and skinny little tires and drum breaks, no role bar and no seat belts. It was terrifying to look at. I can't imagine driving it.
Top Gear were able to get Italian supercars around a corner at higher speeds than F1 cars, but slower overall laps.
23 seconds. That is 31% faster than a supercar driven by a skilled driver. Whatever they did on one corner, is not the same as doing the entire lap.
Even the most skilled drivers like Ron Clark, who was as good as anyone has ever been, often died in accidents.
Jim Clark?
The Deadly Years is a must, and 1 might be a must see as well, which looks at the 70's F1.
Senna was the greatest documentary of all time
I want to see the new Ron Howard movie on Nikki Laude. I bet it is going to be good. First Hollywood movie I have wanted to see since Argo.
Rush looks great and also looking forward to the F1 documentary 1, coming out in October.
Those guys had balls the size of Alpha Centauri.
From what I hear, V8 supercars are pretty entertaining. Supposedly, many of the best from sportscars (ALMS and so forth), and from some of the regional open wheel series race in V8's during their respective off seasons.
My series of choice is IndyCar. They're not quite as fast as F1 (their operating budget is in the high 7 figures, compared to 9 figures for F1), but they're more entertaining to me.
In general, any car that can approach 200mph on a road/street course is scary fast.
V8 Supercars is what NASCAR should be. Fuck oval racing.
I prefer Fi over Indy. I've caught Indycar at Bal'mer for the past 3 years, which was great, but I can't wait to see an F1 race. Toronto, most likely.
Toronto doesn't have F1. You mean Montreal.
Or Austin.
You are correct, Montreal. I had Indycar on the brain.
Austin would be nice, but I love the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Beautiful track.

A bunch of speed comparisons to show how fast those cars are.

I don't know if you saw the Top Gear Nascar feature, where Hammond tried to convince us that Nascar was good?
They tried to compare the 2, and their example was JP Montoya. Not the best example of either sport.
Clarkson said the Americans were good at putting a lot of entertainment around something boring.
Clarkson is also an America-hating smarmy shithead, fuck him (and I don't even like NASCAR). F1 is fucking boring. It's a damned parade and has been for the last 15 years.
Congress's 'credibility is on the line' - Obama
I can understand how Obama could get away with this rhetorical nonsense back when he was a community organizer in Chicago, but how can he continue to get away with it? The entire MSM is giving Obama a pass. Only Putin is calling bullshit.
"My credibility is not on the line."
I'd like to live in a world in which so many people laughed he had to stop speaking for a few minutes. Treating stupidity as if it were cogent doesn't help.
He is right that the international community's credibility is on the line. Either using poison gas is a big deal or it isn't. If Assad uses it and gets by with it, then the international community has no credibility in claiming that it is a big deal. But, that is the international community's problem not the US. The US acted in the name of the international community in Iraq and got no thanks. So they are under no obligation to act again. If the UNSC wants to do something about this, we should be glad to help. If they don't, then we have been down this road once and should feel under no obligation to do so again.
Congress' credibility is in no way at stake. They never made any redline speeches or promised anything. It was Obama who did that.
Why is killing with gas a bigger deal than killing with bullets, in general, and why is killing hundreds with gas a bigger deal than killing thousands with bullets, in particular?
Why are either worse than killing millions via starvation and abuse a la North Korea?
Good question. But even assuming it is a big deal, it is the international community as a group's responsibility to do something about it. We don't owe the world unilateral action.
Agreed.
Because it scares people? Also, because enough leftists worldwide have starved people that they don't want to make too big a deal out of it.
I believe it's considered really bad because of the indiscriminate nature of it and because the wind can blow sideways and kill a bunch of people that aren't part of the fight. But bombs sometimes go astray as well...
I think it's related to how people feel about poison and poisoners. Poison has never been utilized as much as its effectiveness would suggest, because people have a natural aversion to its use. Why that is, I don't know, but I'm sure there are theories out there.
"I've heard it said that poison is a woman's weapon."
"Yes, women, cravens and eunuchs."
What if it's a big deal, but only in an international conflict like Iran/Iraq?
So our credibility is on the line because he said something stupid about taking action if Assad used gas on the rebels?
So he's putting our money (and lives) where is mouth is?
Yes, the credibility of Congress IS on the line. If they cave in to this twerp on Syria, against the wishes of their own constituents, they have no credibility.
The entire MSM is giving Obama a pass.
I simply can't believe that they would ever do that!
Remember after they realized they could use Iraq to go after Bush all of the thumb sucking about how they were not skeptical enough about the war? They seemed to have forgotten that now that a Democrat wants a war.
Forgotten what...what were we talking about
(MSM eyes perpetually glazed over in adoration of President Hollow Chocolate Bunny!)
God, traffic was awful today, and yesterday was pretty bad too. I hope this isn't going to be a long term effect of school being back in session.
Around here traffic gets better when school goes back in session (presumably) because fewer people are on vacation or just out doing random things.
I'm tucked between two schools and my route to work is the main road used by school buses. I definitely prefer commuting in the summer.
People still ride school buses there? Here the parents drive their kids to school, then drive to work themselves, so traffic is twice as bad. And that's not counting all the high school kids who drive themselves to school and barely watch the road.
You can mark the day when the stupidity started again as 5/13/2010:
"The return of redlining (Community Media Workshop)"
"Minority communities which were hardest hit by subprime loans and foreclosures are seeing dramatic and disproportionate decreases in prime mortgage lending, according to a new study of bank lending in seven metropolitan areas including Chicago."
Yep, requiring income and a down payment is bad again.

My credibility is not on the line.
And then the crowd arose as one, and walked out, right?
Kerry opens door to U.S. ground troops in Syria
We were assured no ground troops in Syria. Yeesh...
Two hundred thirty-eighth!
America needs to teach Assad that the right way to kill your own people is to deny them access to affordable health insurance.
The world would never tolerate such a monsteous plan.
My series of choice is IndyCar. They're not quite as fast as F1 (their operating budget is in the high 7 figures, compared to 9 figures for F1), but they're more entertaining to me.
They should rebrand themselves as the ClownCar World Series.
I can't wait 'til they fold; maybe professional open wheel racing will return to America.
