NY and CA Lead List of States Americans Want To Get Their Money Out Of

There's been a lot of buzz in recent years about California hemorrhaging residents, businesses and money to other states. A 2012 Manhattan Institute study found that the state lost 3.4 million residents over 22 years. As Steven Greenhut wrote for Reason at the time, "Business owners talk not just about the costs, but about harassment by myriad government tax and regulatory agencies that often treat them like criminals. Freedom is on the decline as government gains more authority to micromanage virtually everything." Well, California residents can rest a little easy — their state doesn't lead the pack when it comes to people fleeing with what treasure they retain for friendlier climes. No, California is only number two. New York reins supreme when it comes to wealth repellent.
According to a measure of the migration of personal incomes from 2000-2010 prepared by the Tax Foundation, New York lost $45.6 billion to other states, while California shed $29.4 billion. Illinois came in third at $20.4 billion.

As Richard Borean explains for the Tax Foundation, "When a person moves to a new state, their income is added to the total of all other incomes in that state. This positively affects the total taxable income in his or her new state, and negatively affects the income in the state he or she left." The major beneficiaries of all of this refugee cash were Florida, which gained $67.3 billion, Arizona with $17.7 billion, and Texas, which provided shelter to $17.6 billion.
Speaking as an Arizonan, I can say a sincere, "thanks, neighbor."

As a Texan, I'd prefer that Californians and Yankees just stay put in the states they've already ruined.
So um...open borders?
Only to foreigners.
You can prefer all you want, but Article IV and the 14th, baby!
You're assuming the people who ruined California and New York will be the same people who leave.
The evidence demonstrates that they are. Look at what's happened to CO and NH politically over the past decade.
Yup. They bitch about the cost of living and shitty pay where they're from. Then move here (Texas) and complain there's too many rednecks ands guns. Then they bitch about there not being enough organic/vegan/cruelty-free/local farmers markets.
Massholes.
The cockroaches aren't native to CA either. They infiltrated the golden state in the 70s & 80s.
Maybe in another 40 years after they've fucked up Texas and FL they go back to the shitholes they came from.
You're assuming the people who ruined California and New York will be the same people who leave.
As someone with a number of lefty acquaintances that have recently moved out of the city and purchased homes in the suburbs with the explicit intention of being able to send their newly spawned progeny to "good schools", I can't help but chuckle at your naivet
If the rest of the country takes back everyone they've dumped on us in the post war era, we'll hold hold back the flood of native Californians and keep a greater share of the Mexicans and Asians with their delicious foods to sweeten the deal.
Why are South Dakotans satisfied but North Dakotans aren't?
And why doesn't anyone like Minnesota?
Oh, it's over 10 years, so misses the oil boom in ND.
That would explain things.
Because MN mimics everything CA and MA do except we have more snow and schools that work (at least outside of the workers' paradises of MSP/STP proper). And who can resist a caviar liberal Gov. who's never worked a day in his life telling you you don't pay your fair share.
CA and NY really set the bar above what the other 5 worst do. MI, OH, and NJ are all right next to each other.
I certainly expect a lot of this is taxes and regulatory burden, but I wonder how much is just people getting old and retiring.
Yes, those Californians need somewhere sunny to retire to.
Right, fair enough. Was thinking of Floriduh.
Yeah, it was a smartass comment. Although do note that there are quite a few states in the snow belt that are still green.
Also, I suspect if the data went to 2012, ND would be very green.
Florida has no state income tax, which is a big pull for retirees.
The people moving TO North Dakota dont have any money. They are broke and going to ND for jobs.
Still good for the state, but doesnt help by this measure.
I've been to ND. There's no compelling reason to stay except for a job on the oil field.
You stay a few years, you make your money and move somewhere good.
Vermont is an excellent place to retire, but it's an awful place to find a job.
Fuck, you scooped me.
By the way, SG, negronis are TITS. Thanks for the inspiration last week. Americanos are a good substitute when you want a long drink.
Excellent, glad to pass it on. I *may* have been blacked out when posting that.... Hmmm...
Tom Golisano left New York for tax reasons.
I don't doubt that the outflows from CA, IL and NY were due to shitty government, but how much of that inflow into AZ and FL was attributable to baby boomers who would have moved there in any case?
FL and TX also have the "no state personal income tax" advantage. That can't hurt.
It's not like those states don't have other taxation schemes.
EXODUS TAX. Or, the Mickelson Penalty.
Great. The comment below this one got deleted and now it looks like people were reading a lot of homophobic content into my Mickelson comment.
We moved out of NYC 10 years ago and to the burbs of Jersey. If my hubby's job wasn't region dependent, we would've already left Jersey. And, that situation is common to Jersey residents. Most of us are dependent on NYC for employment but given the opportunity many would be long gone.
I actually recently moved to NYC. No, I'm not a fan of the taxes and regulations, but I actually really like the city. It's a fun place.
Thank god there are lots of people like you.
Hm, why's that? Sarcasm?
Sorry, I'm just curious as to what you mean. My sarcasmometer may need recalibration.
Because if you all weren't so attracted to the cities, you might move here. 😉
You couldn't pay me enough to live in a city. Let alone a city the size of NY. Biggest place I've been forced to live was Dayton. Despised it.
What do you do for fun there? I assume you are young and single and you still party and chase pussy. I can see it being exciting for young people, but I don't understand why older people like it. But like I said, to each his own.
Ahh, haha. Yeah, I'm almost 25 and single, so that's good, lots of partying to be had. Also, I can go to lots of concerts with music that I like (which tends to be pretty weird).
But I also just really love being in large cities. I love the skyscrapers, the multitudes of people, and finding tiny coffee shops where I can occasionally hide from it =D. I grew up in small-town PA, and I'm just so much happier here in NYC.
Indeed though, to each his own.
Where in PA? I was born and raised in Honesdale PA. I went the other way. I now live in the middle of nowhere Montana. Couldn't be happier.
Northeast, not too far from Scranton.
No shit! You're a Heyna?
Honesdale is 30 miles NE of scranton. We grew up in the same area.
hahaha I never thought I'd hear another person say heyna! But yep, we did. I think I've actually been to Honesdale.
Beautiful country up that way.
I have fond memories of sledding down snow covered piles of coal during Christmas vacations as a kid. PA kind of memory.
Beautiful country up that way.
It really is. It was certainly fun growing up there, and I love going back on occasion. I guess I find myself in the minority of libertarians being a city boy, hah.
I have fond memories of sledding down snow covered piles of coal during Christmas vacations as a kid. PA kind of memory.
Where in PA?
Avoca
So you go "up de Eynon" too?
Nah, I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, but have family up that way that we used to visit, plus camping trips and the like.
Oh, I really like the Lehigh Valley.
Oh ya, I can remember sledding down coal piles a couple two tree times. Heyna or no?
Wow, it's a NEPA reunion. I'm gonna get a couple two tree pierogies.
My grandmother made the best pierogies in the world.
My grandmother's halushki is amazing.
You'll appreciate this.
hahahaha I love that! I remember many a family gathering where someone suggested we compile all the heyna-isms- looks like someone did it!
Hah, one of the sweetest things my (now ex) wife ever did for me was after we left PA and moved to FL she contacted people back home and learned how to make 'em. One day I come home from work and she had make like 50 of the fuckers, some fried, some with butter and onions. It was awesome.
I'm 50/50. I like the convenience of city, being able to walk a block for anything. And there's something to be said for the anonymity of large crowds. But then I also like the solitude of being far away from everyone else.
If I were 25 and single I'd probably want to live in NYC for a year, maybe two. Then I'd want to get out before I assimilated.
There are still places in this country where you are still free by virtue of the fact that there is no one around to enforce the laws. I've found that the fewer people in a geographic area, the less oppression. People here still care about being left alone and there aren't enough busybodies, yet, to overcome that.
Of course women and jobs are scarce.
Weird, you'd think the cities would be nothing but parasites and moochers and all the jobs and women would be in Galt's Gulch where you live.
Spaking as an Arizonan, I can say a sincere, "thanks, neighbor."
Libertarian thankful for the opportunity to forcibly coerce wealth away from more people?
He meant to write "spanking" so it's BDSM reference.
Way to miss the point, dude.
How about "libertarian thankful to have more wealth spent locally in voluntary transactions?"
That would be better, but immediately before this he's quoting the dude about the taxalicious benefits of poaching incomes.
It could be read that way. Though I know for a fact that in several of those green states the taxable income didn't increase by a penny.
What is your point? Just because good tax policy benefits a particular government doesn't mean it shouldn't be encouraged.
Forcibly?
You totally missed the Greenhut quote about the reason for the California exodus, didn't you?
forcibly coerce wealth away from more people?
Good to see you've finally given up reading entirely and just interject random non-sequiturs these days.
Protip: people voluntarily relocated and thereby increasing the tax base in the place to which they relocated involves no force or coercion.
These videos kind of the show same thing.

Could have gone my whole life without seeing that.
Thanks.
Will admit, I couldn't hit stop once it started.
Yeah, I had the same reaction. I wish i would have recorded my wife, daughter and her friend watching it.
It was like they were watching a sporting event, until the end when they were repulsed from the screen and cried out in distress.
So....actually, exactly like a sporting event.
"This is horrible! The worst thing I've ever seen! I know, I better show everyone!"
It's not the worst thing.
It was more an observation on the sentiment, rather than an invitation to go spelunking in the bowels of the Internet.
I've seen Epi's, Warty's and SF's home-made fan fiction version of the Wicker Man.
THE ARISTOCRATS!
A man walks into a talent agent's office.
And the agent says: "I got your number when you walked in the door!"
Right?
Something like that.
here's a version I enjoy so obviously NSFW, grandma, or lunch.
And that was a tame one.
OK, another from the pros:
Woman walks into a store with two kids, asks the clerk for assistance regarding the goods on the wall.
The clerk says: "Wonderful children. Are they twins?"
Woman says: "Are you crazy? One's 11 and the other one's 4! What would make you think that?!"
Clerk: "You're so ugly, I didn't think you could ever get screwed twice."
I couldn't take the suspense. I had to fast forward.
As a Californian, I'm maxing out my 401(k) to keep Sacramento's greedy little hands off it as much as possible. No way I retire here.
CE| 8.21.13 @ 9:17PM |#
..."No way I retire here."
CA still doesn't tax wealth.
Side note: this is why I hate Roth accounts. Too many people highlight the benefit of tax free withdrawals in retirement (for Federal tax) but completely ignore the state component.
I actually had not considered that aspect.
"Spaking?" Is that Arizona-speak?
It's a perfectly cromulent word.
Well, spoking as a Hoser, I say a-okay!
Okay here's a better link exploring how granting a patent raised oil prices and possibly lead to increased deaths.
Involves the word "torpedo".
http://www.masterresource.org/.....more-27153
"Okay here's a better link exploring how granting a patent raised oil prices and possibly lead to increased deaths."
I did read the link, and yes, it could have done that stuff, but if that's the worst the government ever fucked up, I'd be farting through silk undies!
Am I required to post the worst things?
I don't like the implications of that.
Warrren| 8.21.13 @ 10:42PM |#
"Am I required to post the worst things?"
Nope. But I'm not required to get upset if someone's tie gets a stain.
Would you like me to post a link to that sort of disaster?
I won't fight a tie.
Somebody got MemHoled!
that happens every night.
Who makes the call about who goes? I'm assuming the talk of it being a member of the commentariat is a meme?
I wouldn't trust any of you with that power.
Smiles benignly at the Archduke.
No no, the word you're looking for is benevolently. THAT'S how you instill trust in the filthy peasants.
This is why we can't have nice things
Earlier, I posted about Obama's three surviving sons murdering a college baseball player because they were bored. Here's more news in bored teenager-ville:

A shame that kicking kids' asses is no longer considered good citizenship or good parenting.
That's the closest that kid is going to get to eating pussy for a long, long time.
His crime? He didn't have the blessings of the city to do a proper job with the proper equipment.
"A shame that kicking kids' asses is no longer considered good citizenship or good parenting."
This kind of behavior, and much worse, are probably the result of the loss of ass kicking.
So basically, now that the generational locust swarm that is the baby boomers has finished consuming their home states, they're all moving to other states when they retire so the high taxes they all voted for don't hit them now that they're the rich.
the circle of life.
They'll vote them in the state they move to... for the young people.
I can't be the only one that sees the obvious trend that the states with the most people leaving are the states that are TEAM BLUE headquarters. Unfortunately, these people will most likely take their retarded political views and infect the others. 🙁
They are on a mission to destroy the rest of the country.
It looks like I missed a crazy ass troll tonight. Based on the comments, was this guy claiming to be a 'progressive liberal' who also hates gay people? That's at least slightly more interesting than American.
It was Redefining Marriage, nobody special.
He goes by "Married to Gays" now.
I still can't figure out his character. I was thinking of settling on Dadaist performance art, but that gives it too much credit.
Mark Zuckerberg: The Internet is a human right.
Huh. I wonder why Zuckerberg might want everyone to have internet access.
Other than being restricted by court order I don't know that anyone can't just contact a provider and be hooked up in short order.. oh, that's not what he means, I guess.
Same reason he'd like Facebook regulated as a public utility.

I bet he is quite niggardly with his approvals for white owned businesses.
RACIST!
I do enjoy motorsports! (Not Motocross or other motorcycle stuff.)
Nice.
"not motocross" - I suppose because the African American Stewart brothers are racing?
Therefore - RAC...wait, we've already established that. Never mind.
Also, MotoGP and World Superbike - the BEST racing in all of racedom.
I do hope you don't aspire to a career in DC municipal politics.
I think I'm overpaying my asbestos workers.
I don't see monocle polishers on that list.
It's government employees. They don't have monocles. I have it on good authority that the average government employee can't even afford food. He spends his days eating out of dumpsters and his nights weeping alongside his wife and seven children, weeping that America has forsaken him along with all the other noble public servants who just wanted to make the world a better place.
They have dumpsters?
No. The dumpster is owned by a rich bankster that allows government employees to rummage in his garbage so that he can piss on them from a window while lighting cigars with burning 100 dollar bills.

The Best of Jay and Dan's First Show
No comment on the show, but fuck you Fox for the auto-run next video.
my apologies for linking to the playlist rather than the video only.
Well, If you're genuinely sorry I guess I can let it go.
yeah if you get that channel check out their show. They are funny.
I'm actually watching them right now. I started watching their show the first day it was on and liked it much better than Sportscenter. The format is more interesting, the hosts are funnier, Charissa Thompson is unbelievably hot, and they actually talk about sports instead of worrying about locker room drama.
They also have Gary Payton, Donovan McNabb and Andy Roddick on there, and they're all pretty solid, at least compared to the former athletes ESPN normally gets for their shows. There really isn't a weak link.

Police videotaped planting crack in a man's store so they can arrest him

You can't win the war unless you arrest as many people as possible. All good Americans know this!
The best thing about that article is that one of the commentators is named Hotep Abeku Adams.
The first comment thread rakes the reporting news source over the coals for depicting the victim's mugshot. Oh, sure, those cops are cruel, sadistic motherfuckers, but the store owner should sue the shit out of the agency reporting the story. Because race, or something.
Reason covered this a couple of months ago.

By creating a list of dues paying members?
Funny how many of the liberals in the comments can't see the distinction between a private organization compiling a list of members and the Unite States frickin' government.
Which one reserves the right to drone anyone for any reason?
Basically a map of the Union Belt.

Oh, even before the gays were accepted. I remember back in high school the teacher would bring out two hot dogs and touch them together and say to us, "This is what you boys should be doing instead of playing video games with each other. Now, watch this Golden Girls filmstrip."
Married to Gays| 8.21.13 @ 8:50PM |#
"Notice also that those two states (NY and CA) have the highest concentration of queers."
Why do I guess you know this from personal investigation?
but will also suggest to children that they should partake in it.
The Power of Suggestion shall turn all our kids into queers! I know that at 12, I was just one School House Rock video away from licking another guy's asshole.
I liked you better when you were Underzog.
whom has name-checked Ayn Rand? Tha fuck? I stopped reading there, since you're clearly not just an idiot, but a pretentious idiot.
Sincerely, why are vomiting paragraph after paragraph of off topic and irrelevant crap?
You're boring. Be moar funny or develop a more worthwhile hobby. Some old guy in Australia pokes 4 inch forks into his penis for fun. You should try that.
Right. Thank God we've got Al Franken still. You know, the guy who only remembers to pay his taxes when he wants to run for Senate but can honestly tell me I'm not paying my fair share when I do pay my taxes. Hell, that should only qualify him to be Treasury Secretary.
Yeah, Team Blue is fan-fucking-tastic.
... whom has name-checked Ayn Rand...
Her has done that? Me am impressed!
You distrust the troll-of-the-day's source data?
I didn't support that crazy fucking whore.
Awesome. Shall I educate you on some of your heroes views on gays? I can't wait to quote the homophobic rants of Che and Mao.
Next you'll hold up John McCain as a libertarian hero, I suppose.
Re: Married by gays,
I also heard the rumor about how nobody cares.
You are implying that a progressive communitarian cannot be a libertarian, which is to say, progressive communitarians are ipso facto anti-liberty. Would this be an accurate statement?
Always question.
I'd fornicate Bachmann real good.
Sorry, Charlie. "Progressive communitarianism" is to Marxist-Leninist-Maoist communism as masturbation is to sexual intercourse.
At least the Maoists are upfront and honest about their desire to use the threat of violence against peaceful people for the purpose of wealth redistribution.
But we already knew you were down with the thug life. WEST SIIIIIDEEEE!
Nobody cares who you supported because nobody here associates with you. But very few other people here supported her either. In fact, tons of people here thoroughly hate the Tea Party because of the faction of it she represents.
crazy fucking whore.
Social tolerance!
TROLLFIGHT!
..."I know that at 12, I was just one School House Rock video away from licking another guy's asshole."
They just haven't identified the germ yet!
I'm just a bear.
Yes, I'm only a bear.
But it's not a slip-up, it's a hypercorrection. You have to consciously put the wrong word there - "who" sounds natural, "whom" is you trying actively to be a douche. Success!
Again, hypercorrection. I bet this really bugs you, so I'll never let it go. OOPS!
