The Obama Administration is Ramping Up the Drone War in Yemen

Earlier this week intercepted messages between the head of Al Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahri, and his deputy in Yemen prompted the closure of American embassies across the Middle East and North Africa. Shortly after the closing of the embassies the State Department urged all Americans to leave Yemen immediately. Since then the Yemeni government has claimed to have foiled an Al Qaeda plot to blow up pipelines and seize ports.
Yesterday U.S. officials said that the Obama administration had authorized drone strikes in Yemen before and after the closing of embassies in the Middle East and North Africa after receiving intelligence relating to an Al Qaeda plot. A number of strikes have reportedly recently killed Al Qaeda militants, the latest sign that the U.S. is escalating its drone war in Yemen.
From Fox News:
SANAA, Yemen – The U.S. has sharply escalated its drone war in Yemen, with military officials in the Arab country reporting 34 suspected Al Qaeda militants killed in less than two weeks, including three strikes on Thursday alone in which a dozen died.
The action against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, as the Yemen branch is known, comes amid a global terror alert issued by Washington. One Mideast official says the uptick is due to its leaders leaving themselves more vulnerable by moving from their normal hideouts toward areas where they could carry out attacks.
The U.S. and Britain evacuated diplomatic staff from the capital of Sanaa this week after learning of a threatened attack that prompted Washington to close temporarily 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and Africa.
In June a human rights report published by the Alkarama Foundation revealed that more than 80 people have been killed in Yemen by drones since 2009. At the end of the report, where the names of some of those killed by U.S. drones strikes are listed, some of the women killed by the strikes are noted to have been pregnant. The report also shows that children have also been killed.

This is the ramp UP in the drone war so The President can ramp DOWN the drone war in the near future like he (or shis spokesmodels, I can't remember which) said he will.
Right? RIGHT??
We've got to drone em over there so we can perfect it for use against our own citizens!
+1
Yemen? We've got to drone it to find out what's in it.
That drone murder campaign in Yemen? You didnt build that.
DANGER: Nobel Peace Prize Winner At Work.
Perhaps a "peace prize" of some sort is being dispensed from the drone in the photo?
Well, when there's nobody left, it'll be relatively peaceful.
Now that would make a great bumper sticker.
Maybe they meant Piece Prize.
I must have missed the news the day the USA declared war on Yemen.
There's some good video for Tony to save, so he can post a link here the next time he wants to warn us what his master is going to do to all of us, if we don't stop talking shit about him.

T o n y is too busy spanking it to this months oh so steamy hot "Barry O" centerfold in Unitary Executive! magazine to make this threat.
Maybe al Qaeda has figured out that all they have to do now is "chatter" in order to yank our chains.
[a small but vocal faction slinks off to get their tissues and lube]
They can't let their WAR BONERS last more than four hours, dude. That's not safe.
Just so we're all clear, all al Qaeda has to do now is talk about attacks, and the State Department will shit its pants and the pants of everyone around.
Every shot the US takes in this war is at its own goal.
But, Al Qaeda is on the run, so it's totally worth it.
On the run? They've been decimated, WTF. DECI. MATED.
So they've lost 10% of their strength?
throw him to the ground, centurion!
heh, thwow him to the gwound centhuwion!

Is it an abortion if you are killing the mother as well?
Don't be ridiculous, NutraSweet. They're brown people who live nearby suspected terrorists. This automatically makes them not human, and non-humans can't get abortions. Think of them as being both put down and spayed. Also, stroke your WAR BONER. You'll like it.
So the US military is kinda like your local law enforcement shooting dogs at random on steroids?
Yes, but the 'SPOLSIONS are bigger and there's no paid admin leave.
I'm imagining drone controls implanted directly into pilots' dick's, so the throbbing erection doesn't impede their ability to pilot.
Dogs on steroids probably need to be shot, dude. They're totally making dog baseball unfair. It's not a level playing field!
Oh for fuck's sake shut up Nick!
wait, woops. Got that backwards.
Either way, you made me think of Nick, so there.
no innocents are dying tho, right?
There are no innocents being killed. If they were innocent, we wouldn't have fired a missile at them. Anyone we fire a missile at is good shoot.
No. That's what my liberal friends tell me, at least when I can get them to acknowledge drones at all.
Yemen? I hardly knew her!
How to win friends and influence people.
Way to go, Barry!
The Yemeni people just love having soul-less planes buzzing around and raining death on them.
OldMexican,
If we don't fight them there, we will have to fight them here.
There's probably a Yemeni amphibious assault force off the coast of Palm Beach even as we speak.
The Yemeni people just love having soul-less planes buzzing around and raining death on them.
Admit it Old Mex...everybody loves to get their hands on the hottest new technology!
Do you get extra points for hitting the pregnant ones, or fewer because they move slower?
Are those guided missiles the one's shooting as in the picture? If so, what's the point? Why isn't the drone itself the bomb? As long as you're blowing up your own guidance system, why ship two when you could get by with one? And then there'd be no need for a hand-off between the guidance of one and the other. Was it a matter of drones having been developed for reconnaissance and then adapted to weapon carrying? Or are only the drones guided and the weapons unguided?
It's not just the guidance equipment.
A drone sits on station orbiting around a city for hours, surveilling the area. A guided missile spends seconds going to the target before exploding.
The engines, propellents, guidance packages and aeronautics best suited to fulfilling those two missions are different enough to justify two systems.
And the drone part is re-usable, and can carry more than one missile.
Otherwise what you have is a cruise missile and you don't get to recover those.
But does it pay to have both those fx on one vehicle, piggybacked? Would it not be simpler for an unarmed drone to gather target info and then have someone fire cruise missiles from a fixed base at the targets? The drone could be the spotter for the guided missiles as well, if the drone is still in the area. Seems using the drone as a firing platform adds complexity.
The only advantage I could see to the armed drone would be if it were armed with a gun instead of a guided missile. Would the recoil of a gun upset the flight of one of these small aircraft too badly? How about a small helicopter? You know, fly up to somebody, go bang, and ascend away.
Germany is working towards encrypting all of their emails to keep the US from spying on them. Why would they do that if they have nothing to hide? They must be terrorists or harboring terrorists, time to drone those damn Krauts! Come to think of it, let's just declare all other countries terrorist states. Think of the jobs that we'll create here in the great fatherland of Murika, 100% employment via the drone factory! Heil Obamatron!, the great messiah!
Well, they're Germans, so they're automatically suspect.
