Fist, you really can't let this Nando character get the jump on you. Shame on you.
It was a legit first comment. And you should know I have no shame.
Oh look. Those state of the union goals President Obama set aren't going anywhere.
Thankfully.
For once I agree with you.
The RNC is threatening to pull its presidential primary debates off NBC and CNN if they air planned documentaries on Hillary Clinton...
The networks have a decision to make. Which will get more ratings? The GOP parade of clowns or two hours of Shrillary love?
If that is the choice, I wouldn't be buying ant network stock anytime soon. DOOM!!
RNC: "What are these things which I am suddenly developing down there? They're tender and sensitive, but somehow I like them...let me check my anatomical textbook...OMG, they're *balls!* Wow, I never had these things before!"
The RNC is threatening to pull its presidential primary debates off NBC and CNN if they air planned documentaries on Hillary Clinton, widely believed to be running for president in 2016.
Remember how President John Glenn got his boost from the film version of The Right Stuff?
The RNC should just refuse to debate. After the 2012 and Candy Crowley sticking her fat ass in the breach to save Obama, why would any Republican agree to do a debate moderated by anyone from the MSM? Fuck them.
The candidates should have a debate in which they ask each other the questions. And they should be forced to cite facts, too.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
That would work. Just put them up there and let them go at it. Why do they need some douchebag asking questions?
Why do they need some douchebag asking questions?
Because otherwise they'd end up just talking over each other... oh wait.
Maybe a fight would break out. That would be great.
The point of the "douchebag" (assuming you're talking about the moderator and not the politicians) would be to prevent that and to turn off the mikes when time runs out. Put the politicians in soundproof isolation booths, like on Double Dare.
Oh, and the moderator should have a potty mouth when he has to reprimand the politicians. We need more people literally telling politicians to shut their goddamn fucking mouths.
^THIS
You're a madman! You'd ruin politics as we know it!
I swear, this is all theater that is an excuse to not have debates. Most of the politicians hate debates, because they're morons and don't know shit. And then Obama being made to look incredibly stupid in his first debate with Romney I'm sure made them dislike debating even more, because that could happen to them.
Honestly, would not having debates be much of a loss? I won't miss them.
I say no advertisements or speeches either. If you're not sufficiently motivated to find out about the candidates on your own, don't vote.
Crowley was probably the worst moderator I've ever seen for a presidential debate. The other moderators at least pretended to be unbiased. She may as well have done the whole thing while sitting in Obama's lap.
George Snuffleupagus was the beginning, but The Candy Crowley thing was really a breaking point for me on media. Snuffleupagus asks an obviously planted question to start an Obama narrative. Crowley practically rehearsed that terrorism/Rose Garden thing with the President. It makes me sick.
Stephanoupoulos - what a joke. Yes, I was a partisan for Clinton, but once I became a reporter, the magical impartial cloak fell upon my shoulders and I am unbiased.
She would crush him.

Bashar Assad says Syria's ongoing civil war is going to be settled on the battlefield.
In a more civilized time this would be settled in single combat between Assad and the commander of the rebels.
Assad can be the Red Viper and the rebel leader can be Gregor Clegane. The outcome should still be the same.
Better to die quickly than slowly.
Bashar Assad says Syria's ongoing civil war is going to be settled on the battlefield.
Cue Pat Benatar.
I was hoping he would want to settle it in the Thunderdome.
They should do it in Detroit. No sense in ruining anymore perfectly good cities.

Forty three Democrat politicians in New Jersey have endorsed Republican Chris Christie in his gubernatorial re-election bid this year.
Yeah, but who is Nucky Thompson endorsing?
Being based on a Republican who profited mightily off prohibition, Nucky will gladly endorse Christie so long as he pledges to keep the medical MJ program the most restrictive in the country.
Sounds like Nucky.
Who does the mob endorse?

xoJane writer goes crazy over "Asian fetishes"
Most of her points are actually relatively reasonable if you ignore all the "privilige" bullshit*, but this is retarded:
You're conflating race and ethnicity, moron. Being attracted based on the former really is the same as being attracted to a certain hair color.
Moreover, as long as you're not being a stereotyping dick about it, I fail to see what's wrong with liking someone based on their culture.
Number 9 is a bit tenuous, too.
*I can shrug off talk of privilege from a black or Hispanic person. But a CJK? Give me a fucking break.
I would introduce Kristina Wong to my friend Wang.
Because moron -- my history, my culture and my racial identity is not the same as a pair of glasses or a hair color. Race is not something we choose to be born with or can add or remove to create sexual attraction. I am not "amping up" my race so you find me more sexually attractive.
Just like women choose to be naturally thin, have great skin or great boobs. No one has ever been attracted to characteristics that women are born with.
It is like these people went to stupid school or something. I really think it takes training to be that consistently irrational.
I requires not being ridiculed for being an idiot when you are consistently an idiot, but that's exactly the kind of environment people like this avoid. They actively seek out the echo chamber.
Not stupid. Pity is the new currency. They're just building up their bank account.
Those guys certainly weren't attracted to the smart aspect of her asianness.
And her sequel, where she doubles down:
I really want to write her and tell her not to worry because some of us can't stand Asian women and prefer Latin, Semetic or Indian women.
I'm tempted to order an Asian mail-bride, just out of spite.
I'm going to guess that you were drooling over Superman's mom in the latest flick.
Never saw it. But if she was Indian, I would have been.
Here ya go
Ayelet Zurer
Oh yeah. She would do quite nicely.
She's killing my Asian fetish at this point. I like Asian women, but I really don't like stupid.
Well, she's pretty ugly, so there's that.
That is EXACTLY what she's pissed about. She can't stand getting dates with guys who will go out with her once because she's Asian, then not wanting anything to do with her again because she's Asshole.
How about a generally "hot beyond belief" fetish? Is that out of bounds too?
"a pack of Skittles and an Arizona iced tea"
The Body and Blood of Trayvon.
Oh, that's very good.
I'm not kidding, a day or so ago I read about a pastor in Atlanta that gave a sermon using those very items as props.
Pastor says of brother's slaying, 'Enough is enough'
Oh, wow. I mean, um, wow. Dialogue would not serve a purpose in this case.
Stop perpetuating the myth it was "iced tea." It was Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail.
Oh, god, the stereotypes.
It's one of the many things that makes this case so bizarre. Martin was really a stereotypical black male teen thug, and so many people want to see him as a young innocent, if not a saint.
noice!
Oh boy, let's horribly misunderstand a legal situation in Florida because some idiots claimed it had something to do with race with no basis, and assume that's connected to some guys thinking Asian girls look good.
Invoking Treyvon Martin tells me not to read this any more.
Why do people keep using the term "Asian" when they really mean "Far Eastern?"
Japanese and Indian are both Asian but look nothing alike.
I agree with your point, but Asian is a lot easier to say and sounds better than "Far Eastern"
Also, in Britain when they say "Asian" they mean Indian. Freaks.
My point is there is prolly a more accurate racial descriptor. CJK sure the fuck ain't it as it leaves out Filipino and Thai.
Yeah I know.
Though when I say CJK I am deliberately leaving out Filipino and Thai and (implicitly) including Taiwan and Singapore. Of course, that's still a pretty rough categorization, especially with the number of groups present in China.
South Asian, East Asian, West Asian, Central Asian, North Asian. All Asian, all the time.
Calidissident, this isn't a guy who built the railroads here.
I wonder where she would file me.
I have been living in Japan for the past 20 years. My professional/office life is all conducted in Japanese. I have a few original puns in Japanese which I use as ice breakers partly to get past the "dumbed down Japanese" which some locals here think they need to use on the round eyes. I am also somewhat conversant in Mandarin as well.
- The point is not to brag but to explain the depth of my understanding of a few Asian cultures.
Would she call me racist for having chozen to stay here this long? Am I a racist for "running away from my own kind" or some similar BS? After having been around CKJ women for most of my adult life isn't it normal for me to have adapted to being attracted to them?
What do you do?
She's also a dipshit because she conflates history, culture and racial identity. If I'm attracted to Asian women because I like certain physical characteristics Asian women tend to have, that is in no way related to Asian culture.
I like that liberals often equate culture and race as if particular races have immutable cultures that are just coded into their genes. It's unbelievably racist to do that, but they're too lacking in self-awareness to realize it.
I like that liberals often equate culture and race as if particular races have immutable cultures that are just coded into their genes
Fuckin' this.
Culturally, I have an American fetish.
I'm attracted to Asian men but there are huge chunks of the culture I could do without. Chew on that, lady.
Amen! If only there were more John Cho's.
Or petite women. Or tall women.
I will say this in her defense: Her arguments are idiotic, but there are a lot of total creepers with Asian fetishes. I have an Asian friend who's had guys come up to her and say things like 'You have big boobs for an Asian' or 'I've always wanted to sleep with an Asian girl.'
I'm convinced it's because Asian women remind creepy nerds of anime.
I have heard the same thing. There is a weird breed of guys who go in for just Asian women.
They definitely exist, and they piss me the fuck off. Besides the fact that they're stupid assholes, they make me look bad.
I think the line is are Asians your favorite or do you just go for Asians. I love Latin women. But I married someone who looks more French or continental. The guys who are weird are the ones who only go for Asians and nothing else.
I would say that Asians (or more specifically, CJKs), align very well with my prototype of a beautiful woman. Of course that's not a good one-line comeback dealing with most people.
Disclaimer: "prototype theory" is probably not accurate, but is nevertheless a good way to frame things.
A French friend of mine once coldly reminded me he was indeed Latin. To which I told him, you French don't qualify as dagos like the rest of us. He agreed, and inquired why that is the case. The only thing I could tell him was I didn't write the rules of racism, I just abide by them.
Are Spaniards and Latin Americans considered "dagos" too? I thought that term was reserved for us Italians?
Yup. Originally a slur used by the British navy when hers and Spain's competed for domination.
How fucking weird!! Some guys have a type, and that type is Asian!?
That's not the weird part. The weird part is that a disproportionate amount of guys who are really into Asians actually are weirdos who do weird things and weird everybody out.
They should stop that.
The weird part is that a disproportionate amount of guys who are really into Asians women actually are weirdos who do weird things and weird everybody out.
FIFY
Amen.
I think the point is that many guys whose 'type' is Asian are social retards and total creeps.
"Hey, baby, when we break for lunch let's go out for calamari. I can show you some tenta-I mean, my *tentative* spreadsheets."
Yeah I've been out with a petite, nerdy Asian friend with a rack when she's been approached by some really creepy guys. She's like catnip to them or something.
If she has a rack, she can torture them until they agree not to bother them again.
Oh, not *that* kind of rack? Just as well, I think these guys would like the other kind too much.
And not the rack for drying dishes either.
Yeah, I definitely agree that there are a lot of creepers out there with an Asian fetish. Had this article been strictly targeted towards them, I would have no issues with it. I do have a problem with her assertion that anyone (or at least any white man) who finds a certain race or look more attractive than another is racist. And I don't have a preference for Asian girls, though I do think there are plenty of attractive Asian girls out there.
"I definitely agree that there are a lot of creepers out there with an Asian fetish."
They're called japanese men
Win.
I'm sure red-haired girls get the same creepy type of shit. But they don't try to conflate creepiness with racism.
I'm sure women of all races and looks get it to some extent. Some guys have fetishes for blondes, white women in general, black women, Latinas, etc. Some fetishes seem to be more common than others though. I would say the racism comes from the guys who are into Asian girls because they stereotype them as submissive hyperfeminine robots who will say things like "Me ruv you rong time"
And I can see getting so pissed off at guys like that that you write something illogical and angry on the Internet.
Is there any lefty opinion website that isn't completely dominated by narcissists?

OK, is there any lefty opinion website that isn't completely dominated by narcissists and Dr. Who?
Because they're too busy dividing into factions to prosecute the new Dr. Who holy war?
Please tell me it's Summer Glau.
No. The LGBTQ Dr. Who fans are apparently forming common cause with the feminists and minorities because the Doctor came back as a nerdy white guy again. Who knew the Time Lords were tools of Teh Patriarchy?
At least, as best I can tell from the FB bitching. I don't give a fuck.
What are they fighting over now? Who should be the next Doctor?
See below. Someone posted it.
I hate giving these people the benefit of my page clicks, so maybe I'm wrong about this: Is she saying it's racist for white guys to like Asian women?
And I'd want to go Larry David on her: bald guys with glasses have their own culture and identity, too. How dare you belittle them!
Strictly speaking, no -- she says it's wrong for white guys to have an "Asian fetish".
However, while I can't read her mind this is a common way for people who do believe that it's racist for white guys to like Asian women to simultaneously cover their asses and move the goalpost.
In her article she never really defines "Asian fetish"; she just straw-mans by listing Things [she's] ACTUALLY been told by Asian Fetish Guys in Denial?
Stuff like #2, If I really had an Asian Fetish, I'd be buying sex slaves off the Internet.
That's what I figure: call it an Asian "fetish," without explaining how this fetish is distinct from more innocent tastes.
Well I grew up in a very Korean community and go to a school that has the second highest percentage of Asian students in the entire country. So I see a lot of Asian girls and there are indeed many beautiful and attractive Asian girls. There are also many who are not so attractive.
I think that there are definite physical features that characterize an attractive Asian female, like the eyes, nose, and hair color. Finding those things attractive does not mean you have a fetish or are engaging in racism. Two Asian girls could look exactly alike only one could be high Americanized and the other could be an immigrant that retains the customs and traditions of her country of origin.
Ethnicity does not equal culture.
"go to a school that has the second highest percentage of Asian students in the entire country. So I see a lot of Asian girls"
Asian schoolgirls in trouble?
Ethnicity does not equal culture.
Traditionally defined ethnicity is sociological and race is (thinly) biological. Hence "white Hispanic" (which isn't really bullshit per se; it has just been used disingenuously).
I see, I guess I meant to say race does not equal culture.
You're right its pure ignorance on her part. The perception of what is beautiful in humans is based upon pleasing combinations of pattern and symmetry and the psychological impact of those factors forming a fulfilling gestalt for the viewer. Wallpaper, harmony, meter and rhyme in poetry, human faces, and kittens, it is all the same. Sexual attraction doesn't change that. You'll find something visually pleasing in every race and species when independent qualities come together to form an appreciated whole. For Asian girls, cheekbones and eyes often effectively counterbalance one another.
ASM, you go to UC Irvine right? I go to USC, the Asian population isn't as high as it is there, but it's still very significant and we have the largest number of international (mostly Asian and Indian) students in the country. IMHO, I'd say guys here find Asian-American women more attractive than the international ones.
IMHO, I'd say guys here find Asian-American women more attractive than the international ones.
I certainly do.
IMHO, I'd say guys here find Asian-American women more attractive than the international ones.
I think that's the case here. The people that are from Korea or China tend to be very cliquey, so for that reason a guy who likes an Asian girl would have better chances with an American girl. More to relate to and less pressured by cultural taboos on her part.
UCDavis was pretty hihg on that list.
Ethnicity does not equal culture
Really? I thought it did. Or at least that culture was a part of what makes up ethnicity.
Perhaps I used the wrong word? My point was simply that they way you look or your last name does not automatically put you in a certain culture.
Agreed. I think "race" is probably more what you were looking for.
It's racist to be more attracted to white women than non-white women and it's racist to be more attracted to non-white women than white women? I think it's pretty stupid to call someone a racist because they find a particular look or skin tone more attractive than others. Are gay people sexist? It's one thing if she limited these remarks towards the kind of guys Irish describes (who do exist). It's another to target them towards any white guy who is most attracted to Asian women.
Also, does this only apply to white guys? A friend of mine is half-Mexican and used to have an Asian fetish (and I use fetish because he was one of those guys that admittedly like Asian women partly due to the "me ruv you rong time" stereotype, which is offensive), was that ok cause he's not 100% white? My best friend is Bolivian and is most attracted black and Indian women, is that ok?
...was that ok cause he's not 100% white? My best friend is Bolivian and is most attracted black and Indian women, is that ok?
Probably, because something something PRIVILEGE!
SO they're pissed when guys are attracted to store-bought accoutrements, and they're pissed when guys are attracted to natural features.
I don't see why it matters anyway, it's what turns guys OFF that should matter to them. Mainly their personalities, which they can't fake.

Three isolated incidents you mean.
Ever wondered what a lab-grown stem cell burger tastes like?
Hanni Ruetzler, a food researcher from the Future Food Studio, tasted a mouthful as Prof Post was still fielding questions. She first smelled it and also carefully prodded it with her fork as if testing for rigidity.
After chewing, she said she had expected a softer texture and later commented on its crunchy surface.
"There is really a bite to it, there is quite some flavour with the browning. I know there is no fat in it so I didn't really know how juicy it would be, but there is quite some intense taste; it's close to meat, it's not that juicy, but the consistency is perfect.
"This is meat to me... It's really something to bite on and I think the look is quite similar."
Though it had a buttery outside, there wasn't such an "intense meat flavour" on the inside, she added, though even tasting blind she would still say it was meat, and not a soya copy.
Bravery than I am.

In related news, "problematic" is now my least favorite word. Why do people use that word the way they do? "What you said is problematic." What's the problem, and who has it!?
Saying something is "problematic" is usually a way to cop out when they don't want to say outright that they disapprove of something, usually because if they do, they'll get called out for it.
Yeah, I've worked that out. I hate the presumption behind that.
What's wrong with, "That's troubling," or a plain, straightforward classic like, "I disagree"?
"There are problems with that" does not necessarily mean "I disagree."
In the SJW context it usually does.

Python escapes from Canadian pet store; strangles two young boys to death.
It's believed the snake escaped from a pet store called Reptile Ocean. The victims were boys aged five and seven. They were visiting a friend in the apartment above the store, police said in a statement released Monday.
Rogers-Marsh said the preliminary investigation led police to believe that a python snake escaped its enclosure at the store sometime overnight. Initial information indicates the snake got into the ventilation system and then into the apartment upstairs.
"It's believed the two boys were strangled by the snake," she said, noting that autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow in Saint John.
Police were called to the residence on Pleasant Street at 6:30 a.m. local time.
Police have the snake. Initial reports suggested the snake was a boa constrictor.
Sad and pretty disturbing.
Fuck these idiots who insist on owning those things. If you want to own a large python you are retarded. They are incredibly strong and every bit as dangerous as a deadly viper.
What is the point of owning one other than to show the world what a dumb ass you are? If you own one of those things and it escapes and harms someone, you should be held criminally responsible.
AND THEY OPEN DOORS!
Am a bad person if my first thought was "are they negotiating for the movie rights?"

Used to work with a guy who had an 18 footer. That thing would get in the bathtub and push out on the sides so he couldn't remove it. No effing way I'm going to keep an animal that can kill me as a pet.

Obligatory Feminist butthurt over women not labelling themselves as feminists piece
It is perhaps all the reasons cited above and more. Celebrities like Demi Moore and Lady Gaga rely on their popularity for their success and financial gains and are afraid to use the F word but it also drives home the point that there is no level playing field for women if they have to come out and say that they are not feminists, if anything it tells us that the world needs feminism and its feminist icons and role models.
Feminists do not hate men in general. Most of the women who label themselves as feminists like men just fine. In fact, they may state it more openly than their patriarchy endorsing sisters but that is not the point here. The point here is that they may like or dislike people for various reasons and they can be both men and women.
[Snip]
Feminism is not just a label, it was a movement ? it still is a movement. It is not about the women who turn away from it for popularity but about fighting the fight against injustice for the people who do not enjoy the privilege of equality. The feminist worldview is about fighting patriarchy and creating a more just society for everyone which in turn would benefit everyone ? men, women, children, animals and perhaps the environment.
Feminists do not hate men in general. Most of the women who label themselves as feminists like men just fine. In fact, they may state it more openly than their patriarchy endorsing sisters but that is not the point here.
I like the ever-so-subtle implication that not labeling yourself a feminist means you endorse the patriarchy.
Most women want to get married and have a baby. Gee, feminists have spent decades denigrating that and now wonder why so many women don't call themselves feminists.
It is not about the women who turn away from it for popularity but about fighting the fight against injustice for the people who do not enjoy the privilege of equality
Actually, what is all about is turning all western men into a bunch of feminized pussies, to make the Islamists world take over more easy. If that's not what it's about, then I think that feminists are pretty damn stupid.
I mean really, the last couple of weeks at work, just walking from my parking spot, or walking to get lunch, I have noticed that there are a large percentage of guys who are totally effeminate in appearance and behavior, it's really fucking creepy. It wasn't like that when I was growing up.
So apparently, this feminism is working, but I think the results are going to eventually be the exact opposite of what they planned on.
Actually, what is all about is turning all western men into a bunch of feminized pussies, to make the Islamists world take over more easy. If that's not what it's about, then I think that feminists are pretty damn stupid.
The funny thing is that those feminist women then remain most attracted to those unapologetic savage men that give not a fuck about hitting them or killing people in very male fashion
Radical feminists want to have it both ways. They insist that all women are really feminists but many don't identify as such because the patriarchy misrepresents it, and then at the same time demand that all feminists must totally conform to left-wing politics. And they don't even see the contradiction.
I get way more feminists telling me I can't be feminist and libertarian than the other way around.
That said, I consider everyone who thinks sex or gender should be irrelevant most of the time a feminist, which yes, also gets me in trouble with radical feminists.

Gamespot published an anti-Castle Doctrine article... for some reason
Shouldn't Gamespot get back to doing what they know best: writing fluff pieces for the game companies that pay them to do so?
Bonus stupidity:
Shocking.
"In this game, shooting is not mechanically fun, so there's no visceral enjoyment in the act, and your attempts to eliminate terrorists only succeed in making more terrorists."
That sounds like fun.
Can I killstreak up to a drone?
It's the hip thing to do right now. I'm really getting aggravated at the politically correct nonsense that seems to be more and more infecting video game websites. Gamasutra one of the worst offenders, even though it has great articles sometimes too.
It's a cancer. Progressives really do infect everything they touch; would it even occur to a libertarian, conservative, or moderate to politicize a damn gaming magazine?
Every video game should require you to run as far away as possible and call the police for backup when you are attacked. You only get to have a six-shot revolver and a double barrel shotgun once you retrieve them from the safe at your licensed gun club and reassemble them.
A rule of thumb for me, when someone has a tendency to politicize matters that have nothing to do with politics, they do so due to having little to no competence in marketable skills, and are simply falling back to the inner void of their personal belief system.
What does this mean? Is EA coming out with a game based on the shooting?
He's a longer, and just as clueless, piece on the game, Castle Doctrine
The reason is obvious. It's because the left-wing runs almost entirely on forcing propaganda into every aspect of life as a sort of indoctrination and a ward against thought crime.
That's why so many young people are liberal. They consume the most media, which is chock full of left-wing propaganda.
Well, partly. It's also really easy to believe dumb shit when you're still living with your parents and not having to deal with the real world.
That's why so many young people are liberal. They consume the most media, which is chock full of left-wing propaganda
This is true. Which is why I spread Libertarian propaganda at every chance I get. It's our only hope.
It's more difficult of course when you don't own the media and the education system.
Their website is horrible. Have you ever tried browsing the game pics that they sometimes include in a game review? Every time you click on one of them, it refreshes the entire page. It's like they've never heard of Ajax.
Anyway, I only go there for reviews. I occasionally write one there also. If I'm going to buy a new game, I will first go there to read reviews, and then watch gameplay on youtube.
I never read the reviews by Gamespot though, only the player reviews.
It's like they've never heard of Ajax.
Sidetrack: how I long for the golden days when people used "Ajax" as a synonym for "cool", instead of HTML5 today.
(not saying that you do/did that)
Same. IGN has OK magazine reviews sometimes; I'm more of a grand strategy guy though so I read StrategyInformer for the games that my wife says I play too much (read: ~5 hours a week 🙂 ).
I remember when AJAX was just plain XHTML.
Quick and random off topic. Any suggested resources for coming up to speed on web development relatively quickly? I've got a python tool that I wrote, and am looking to attach a nice front end onto it.
I'm primarily a application to kernel level programmer, so I don't mess much in the web dev realm. The extent of my web development is putting links in an html page, so I'm effectively starting from scratch.
What do you want to do?
Primarily looking to use the frontend to kick off the backend script with various config parameters as chosen by the user, and dynamically populate the results as they're generated. The results are a handful of svg files and a few text files that should be stylized into something a bit more readable than the raw text.
This script is a debugging tool for a large system, so we use it to pull relevant information out of the system's logs and display it in a more readable format.
Have not tried, but this was the first sensible suggestion on google. Pretty sure its more or less drag-n-drop with some config file editing.
Django would be good; depending on the complexity of the project Flask might be more appropriate.
For the frontend, you might try Twitter Bootstrap as a base.
And if you need to fuck around with the DOM most people use jQuery, which is quite easy.
Yeah, late for the question, but here's my suggestion.
I've been doing web development for over 10 years.
This is biased, I know, but if you want to be a happy web developer, go for .NET. I've done it all, all the rest sucks, really. I'll finish my career being a .NET developer. If I had to write java code, I'd just retire now, but that's me.
As far as resources are concerned. The internet is your friend. If you are a person that likes to learn, the intertoobs will help you more than any class you will ever take. Of course, getting a job doing web dev, might require a degree and some real world experience.
our society still treats the fears of some members of society as reasonable and justifiable

How to be "body positive"
Don't talk about "real bodies" or "real women."
There was a time when "Real women have curves" was a very popular slogan in the body positivity movement. It was well meaning ? those who said it wanted fat and curvy women to be considered beautiful too. The problem is the slogan excludes those who lack curves, who are still obviously "real women." We can't put down other people to make ourselves feel better. Body positivity means all bodies, not just ones that look like yours.
Don't tolerate negative speech.
This means negative words from you, your friends, your family and the media. When you're saying or thinking something negative about yourself, try to stop. Calling people out for their behavior can be really difficult so don't feel badly if you can't bring yourself to do it. But you can try to tell your friends that what they're saying makes you uncomfortable, explain to your mom that you don't like when she talks about your weight, or use social media to chastise companies that use problematic messages.

Even Berkley isn't safe from neoliberalism
It may be hard to imagine that a term identified with the policies of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher?deregulation, privatization, union-busting?could apply to Berkeley city hall. Unfortunately, the neoliberal tag is all too apt, with one exception: the Bates council has habitually deferred to unions representing the city's workers, though whether that deference should be considered progressive is arguable.
In the face of recurring multi-million dollar shortfalls in the city budget, the mayor and his allies have cut social services and neglected Berkeley's crumbling infrastructure while repeatedly approving generous salaries and benefits (pension plus health insurance) for city employees. Thanks to that munificence, and to Berkeleyans' willingness to pay some of the highest taxes in California, as of February 2013 the city employed 1,295 men and women, one-third of whom?almost all of them police, firefighters, or managerial staff?had salaries over $100,000.
The fact that they're still trying to claim Reagan and Thatcher were neo-liberals is just precious.
One-third of city workers make over $100,000 and this psychopath is whining about neo-liberalism?
Being a Pregnant Latina PHD candidate is hard, guys!
The rarity of this circumstance is intensified by the fact that I'm having a child coupled with a lack of financial means. Though I was teaching first year English at a prestigious university where my students call me "professor." I was also cleaning toilets and taking out trash at a Barnes and Noble to earn extra money for my non-funded summer (where my appropriate title was "cleaning lady").
Then came the difficulty of explaining to social workers that the paycheck I'm earning is not really a pay check; a stipend is contingent upon my completion of graduate school requirements one of which includes teaching. I was promptly told that "full-time college students are not eligible for food stamps," and I was in awe that the social worker could not fathom the difference between college and graduate school, even as I politely explained it.
Education is directly tied to the politics and economics of women of color with children. Not only am I not even half of one percentage point in the field of academia, but I'm unmarried and having a baby. In one facet of life I'm a Latina breaking statistics, but in the same vein I'm reinforcing common stereotypes about Latinas in single motherhood.
Maybe you should have closed your legs until you had a PHD and a job? Or maybe you should sleep with a better class of man who will marry you after he knocks you up. Just a thought.
Planning for the future is misogynist.
My daughter is still going to school and she has a baby and a job. Somebody needs to shut the fuck up and put on her big girl pants!
I know a woman who had two babies while working on her Ph.D. in a STEM field at a major university. I never heard her complain.
She had obviously internalized the Patriarchy, or was intimidated into silence by you.

This is a sign that she's being oppressed by some patriarchal male. He's probably making her work 3 jerbz while he lays around all day drinking beer and serfin the pr0n. There's no other explanation, otherwise she'd be whining incessantly about being oppressed.
And self-important morons.
That made blood shoot out of my eyes.

Hey, at least 8.7% of Floridians have adequately functional brains: a new (scientific?) poll shows that in the 2014 Gubernatorial race 8.7% supported Adrian Wyllie. It's amazing how that happens when a Libertarian's name is actually included in a poll as opposed to the 0% they get when all of their supporters are categorized as undecided.
Also of note:
73.5% supported medical marijuana legalization.
58.8% supported recreational marijuana legalization.

I think she pretends to be funny and they pretend to pay her.
"5. Create a real-life version of the Hunger Games, and claim that the proceeds from ticket sales will be replacing the income tax as a source of government income."
There seems to be a Hunger Games-inspired reality show that airs after the new "Whose Line." Only without the killing, and the hunger.
LOL what? Citation fucking needed. Outside of Cuccinelli, I can't think of anyone you could even argue this would apply to.
I seriously doubt fucking Ted Cruz wants to ban oral sex.
Cuccinelli specifically acknowledged that the *Lawrence* opinion protects the rights of adults to perform sodomy in private. He only seeks the power to punish people who try to have sodomy with underage persons, etc.
I know that. I'm just saying that Cuccinelli has at least said something that could be construed in the way Amanda is trying to twist things.
Cruz has never said anything of the sort.
Isn't sodomy with an underage person already illegal?
Not in Virginia (though there are some other offenses that can be charged), because the statute was constructed in such a way that it didn't distinguish and wasn't separable, and so the whole thing was struck down.
However, I believe that Cuccinelli supports bringing back the original statute more than an attempt to write a new, limited one to sodomy with a minor.
Also, it's simply a standard AG type thing of wanting more tools to go after the Bad Guys with, while promising never to use it the Wrong Way. Even that that inevitably happens. In that, he's not different from, say, Janet Reno or Martha Coakley.
Apparently, in Va it's only the sodomy law which criminalizes sodomy with 17-year-olds, as in the case Cuccinelli was dealing with. A 40-something guy took a ride in a 17 y/o girl's car, asked her to perform sodomy on him, *and then reported her to the police* as if she was the one who wanted to sodomize *him.* He pled guilty to deceiving the cops, and he also got a lengthy sentence for soliciting sodomy. A 3-judge panel said that until Va rewrites its sodomy law, it cannot apply the law to situations like this, but Cuccinelli says the panel was misusing its authority as a federal court, given the limits Congress placed on the power of federal courts to second-guess state-court convictions.
Somehow, Cuccinelli's opponents have spun this as "OMG, he wants to put adults (including married people) in prison for sodomizing each other." This political tactic is also known as lying.
"Here's something you never hear a guy say: "Stop sucking my dick, or I'll call the police!"" - George Carlin
The joker in this case claimed he was the exception to George Carlin's aphorism - yeah, right.
So the general law regarding age of consent doesn't apply to non-vaginal intercourse?
According to what I've read there is more to this than what you've posted.
Apparently in Virginia the age of consent laws do not criminalize sex as occurred between the 17 an 47 year old as in the case you note, as long as it is vaginal. Cuccinelli wants to keep the sodomy law so that he can prosecute older men who have oral or anal sex with 17 year olds that they could have vaginal sex with.
And there are reasons to be skeptical of Cuccinelli's claims that he has no intent to use the law on adults. From Mother Jones:
-in 2004, when a bipartisan group of state Senators was trying to fix the sodomy law so that it would only apply to cases involving minors and non-consensual sex, Cuccinelli, then a state Senator, blocked the effort. And in 2009, as my colleague Andy Kroll has noted, Cuccinelli made clear that he objected to oral and anal sex (at least between gay people) on principle, telling the Virginian-Pilot, "My view is that homosexual acts?not homosexuality, but homosexual acts?are wrong. They're intrinsically wrong. And I think in a natural law-based country it's appropriate to have policies that reflect that
http://www.motherjones.com/moj.....sex-sodomy
The bill you mentioned didn't just legalize adult sodomy (which *Lawrence* had already done), it would have reduced the penalty for sodomy other than the consensual-adult kind. I've linked to it before. Maybe Cuccinelli wanted to retain the heavier penalties for sodomitical rape, etc.
And going by his legal brief in the 47-y/o's case (I've linked to it in previous threads), Cuccinelli made no attempt to challenge Lawrence, or its holding that adults can sodomize each other to their hears' content.
Do you really think that swing-voter soccer moms in Va are thinking, "gosh, I'd like to vote for this Cuccinelli guy, but he abuses the legal system to keep creepers in prison who propositioned 17-year olds! I'd better vote for the Democrat instead!" No, the Democrats want to advance the narrative that Cuccinelli wants to imprison adults for sodomizing each other, even in the marital bedroom. The fact that this is false isn't particularly important to the Democrats, so long as it gets them the vital swing voters.
Libertarian voters who are concerned with Cuccinelli's actual position, not the Democratic distortion of his position, are probably going to vote for the Libertarian candidate...certainly not for the Democrat.
The real reason the Dems want to beat him is that he challenged Obamacare and EPA abuses. If he loses, then the MSM will trumpet this as a defeat of Tea Party nihilism and anti-governmentalism.
All right, I've given this link before, but here's the bill Cuccinelli opposed:
http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bi.....ul+SB477S1
Not only would it have legalized private consensual adult sodomy (apart from prostitution), it would have reduced most of the remaining sodomitical offenses (rape, prostitution, public places) to misdemeanors, retaining felony status only for incest and sex with minors.
If the Dems wanted a fair test of C's attitude toward consensual adult sodomy, they should have proposed a bill which simply legalized it, not proposed a bill which *lowered* the penalties for the non-consensual, prostitution-based forms of sodomy.
Again, the truth isn't going to woo the soccer-mom swing voters away from C, so the Dems feel it necessary to lie about his actual position.
Even sodomy with minors would have been reduced to misdemeanor status, unless it was incestuous.
So, yeah, there's no reason other than opposition to adult sodomy to oppose this bill.
Here is the 2004 bill Cuccinelli opposed:
http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bi.....ul+SB477S1
Essentially, all it did was add this to the part criminalizing sodomy:
-The provisions of clause (ii) of this subsection shall not apply where all persons are consenting adults who are not in a public place and who are not aiding, abetting, procuring, engaging in or performing any act in furtherance of prostitution.
That is not *all* it did. It reduces even those sodomitical acts which remained illegal to misdemeanors - they had previously been felonies.
Only incestuous sodomy remained in felony status.
I see.
I'm afraid I don't see it as much of a defense that Cuccinelli plainly supports sodomy laws in general, and when the Supreme Court made that impossible to apply to consenting adults in private he fought, and is still fighting, to make felonies of it wherever it occurs outside of that, including in cases of prostitution, between consenting adults in public and consenting non-adults who nevertheless meet the age of consent in that state even in private.
"I'm afraid I don't see it as much of a defense that Cuccinelli plainly supports sodomy laws in general, and when the Supreme Court made that impossible to apply to consenting adults in private he fought, and is still fighting, to make felonies of it wherever it occurs outside of that, including in cases of prostitution, between consenting adults in public and consenting non-adults who nevertheless meet the age of consent in that state even in private."
Look, I'm not a Virginian, but I admire Ken C for his crusade against an overweening federal government, and it really pisses me off that Democrats are able to dupe libertarians into joining their anti-C crusade based on the myth that he wants to punish husbands and wives for what they do in the bedroom. You seem to acknowledge that this is bogus, but this is the spin the Dems are using to put their guy into the Governor's mansion - and the NY Times will then run an editorial that the voters in Va have rejected the extreme, Tea-Party, anti-Obamacare, anti-EPA fanaticism of Cuccinelli.
And the *Mother Jones* quote you reference is from the Virginia Pilate - I mean Pilot - which (unsuccessfully) endorsed the forgettable Democratic candidate for Va AG over Cuccinelli:
"As a Republican state senator, his limited-government philosophy led him to oppose common-sense safety measures and some crime bills. He voted against allowing cities to enforce traffic laws with red-light cameras and even argued against stricter laws for cockfighting.
"He reconciles his anti-government record and his desire to be the state's lawyer by promising to sue the federal government over environmental and union issues."
The Pilate editorial also denounced C's support for the right to life.
And the quote about sodomy was not in the context of putting gays in prison, but in the context of an executive order applying civil-rights protections to gays, an issue on which most Republicans agree with C, without wanting to do an Oscar Wilde with Virginia's gays.
What "common-sense safety measures" did C oppose, to the horror of the Pilate? This link gives us a hint:
"But in the wake of the massacre of school children in Newtown, Connecticut, last Friday there is another way in which Kookinelli constitutes a danger to Virginians that needs to be called to the attention of Virginia voters he opposes any restrictions on gun ownership. Don't believe me? Here is what Kookinelli is disseminating on his campaign website:
"'...Worked for the repeal of unreasonable restrictions on law-abiding concealed carry permit holders
"'Drafted and successfully passed legislation that stopped some liberal county governments from requiring duplicate background checks...
"'Worked to expand locations where law abiding citizens with concealed carry permits can carry, including state parks....
"There you have it. Cuccinelli supports the Wild West atmosphere that gun manufacturers, high capacity ammunition clip manufacturers and their minions in the National Rifle Association ("NRA") lobby for on a daily basis. In keeping with this dangerous mindset, Cuccinelli has opposed the efforts of universities to limit concealed weapons on college and university campuses."
etc, etc.
I imagine these are the common-sense measure the Pilate supports and C opposes.
"...
http://michael-in-norfolk.blog.....ngful.html
Are you talking about the quote about natural law? Because I think it is pretty clear what that quote is saying.
-homosexual acts?are wrong. They're intrinsically wrong. And I think in a natural law-based country it's appropriate to have policies that reflect that
He's saying sodomy is malum per se and in a natural law based country (which Cuccinelli is for) there would be 'appropriate policies that reflect that.' That certainly doesn't stop at not adopting employment discrimination policy.
The point is he's not trying to challenge *Lawrence's* protection of private adult sodomy (outside of prostitution), yet the Dems are trying to scare the willies out of the soccer moms by suggesting that he will arrest married people for what they do to each other in the bedroom.
With respect you are moving the goalposts. Cuccinelli does not support sexual freedom, even between consenting adults. That he hasn't engaged in an obviously futile effort to get the SCOTUS to repeal its holding in Lawrence proves little.
The newspaper you quote from Virginia may oppose Cuccinelli for reasons I would not. I would oppose him for his hostility to the right to privacy, a right I value quite highly.
"With respect you are moving the goalposts."
The goalpost I defend is the "he's not trying to overturn Lawrence" goalpost. I'm not trying to claim he *likes* Lawrence, and I'm not speculating about what he might have done in the absence of the *Lawrence* decision. I'm talking about his actual position as presented to Va voters. And he's made quite clear that he's not trying to violate *Lawrence's* prescriptions.
Again, libertarian voters in Va may object to his use of the sodomy law against creeps who proposition 17 y/os. There are legitimate rule of law issues. But the Dems aren't going after these voters. They're trying to make soccer-mom swing voters swallow some crap about C trying to lock up married people for what they do to their spouses.
I don't think Cuccinelli deserves the benefit of the doubt in this situation. Lawrence was not that long ago, and there definitely still are people who think homosexuality should be illegal. Look at the recent cases in Louisiana to see how some people will still try to circumvent the decision. And I ask again; is sodomy not covered under Virginia's general age of consent law? The age of consent in Virginia is 18 - why would that not apply to oral or anal sex?
It appears that the age of consent is 18, but their statutory rape law makes sex with someone 15 to 18 a misdemeanor. Virginia's crimes against nature law makes sodomy a felony, and Cuccinelli's argument is that he should be able to, under Lawrence, apply this law to statutory rapists who have oral or anal sex with the underage person.
Ironically, he's urging the Court to OK the law he opposed in 2004, except he wants to keep the felony level that bill would have knocked down to a misdemeanor.
Why doesn't he just try to change the statutory rape law, instead of trying to revive while tweaking the sodomy law?
Because he is a social conservative who has stated his support for a 'natural law country' and wants 'policies that reflect that.' The Supreme Court has taken away his preference to have a broader 'crimes against nature' law so he is going to ask them to make sure he can use it in every other setting that they didn't explicitly rule he cannot.
I don't know anything about his opponent. I'm sure he has positions that would make me cringe. But I know Virginia has a libertarian party that is quite active and likely a libertarian candidate I could support rather than Cuccinelli or his opponent.
"He's saying sodomy is malum per se and in a natural law based country (which Cuccinelli is for) there would be 'appropriate policies that reflect that.' That certainly doesn't stop at not adopting employment discrimination policy."
He's a member of the Va bar. He would stop at the point where he directly challenges the *Lawrence* decision's affirmation of the rights of consenting adults in private - contrary to propaganda like this:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/.....may-apply#
Given his past statements and current positions it is obvious he 'stops at the point where he directly challenges the Lawrence decision' because its entirely futile.
Let me put it this way: If soccer-mom or left-libertarian Virginians are worried that the Supreme Court might overrule Lawrence, they should vote for the libertarian or Democratic candidate. If they think that the Supreme Court will not overrule Lawrence in the forseeable future, they should vote for Cuccinelli, unless of course they believe that he was extreme and scary for opposing Obamacare and EPA abuses.
I think this is a huge cop-out that social conservatives and their defenders take. They state their preference for law X. They decry the Supreme Court when it takes that option from them. They state their intent to change that. Then when elections roll around their defenders say 'well, of course the SCOTUS won't let them do it, so just ignore it.'
"I think this is a huge cop-out that social conservatives and their defenders take."
I can't speak for Cuccinelli, and certainly not for Santa-orum, but I am opposed to persecuting either sodomites or smokers. The same principle applies in each case - they should be allowed to engage in their preferred behavior unless there's a demonstrable infringement on the rights of others. In the case of smokers, this would include such things as lighting up a cigarette in a private establishment where the owner has disallowed such behavior. In the case of sodomites, it would include sex with minors, or in public parks, but not sex in private with other consenting adults.
-The Pilate editorial also denounced C's support for the right to life.
I would oppose him for that reason too. It appears he is one of these supporters of a 'personhood' law or amendment. If I recall rightly you in a previous discussion while you expressed your pro-life stance you did not endorse the idea that early embryo's deserve 'human rights.' That's what that law does.
It appears his immigration stance is a concerning one as well, wanting an Arizona styled law for his state.
"in a previous discussion while you expressed your pro-life stance you did not endorse the idea that early embryo's deserve 'human rights.'"
Just to be clear, I support human rights for all living human beings, and if prolifers could manage to embody that principle in a state constitutional amendment I would applaud it. I actually manned the phone banks in a regrettably unsuccessful attempt to persuade Mississippi voters to protect human life from the moment of conception.
I hope none of my prior posts contradicted this position. If so, just give me a link and I'll repudiate it.
It's likely my mistake in remembering or in interpretation.
For my part, I find whatever attractiveness pro-life arguments may have to zero out when they start to maintain protections at the very early stages.
"For my part, I find whatever attractiveness pro-life arguments may have to zero out when they start to maintain protections at the very early stages."
Then we have some work to do.

"A 40-something guy took a ride in a 17 y/o girl's car, asked her to perform sodomy on him, *and then reported her to the police"
Wtf? I don't even know what to say to that.
A description of his behavior, from the 2 judges who overturned his conviction (we can only imagine how someone who supported his conviction would have described it):
"MacDonald was forty-seven years old at the time of the events giving rise to his state court convictions. On the evening of September 23, 2004, MacDonald telephoned seventeen-year-old Amanda Johnson, a young woman he had met through a mutual acquaintance. MacDonald and Johnson arranged to meet that night at a Home Depot parking lot in Colonial Heights. When they arrived at the parking lot, MacDonald got into the backseat of Johnson's vehicle and they drove to the nearby home of Johnson's grandmother. Johnson went into her grandmother's residence to retrieve a book, and when she returned to the vehicle MacDonald asked her to "suck his dick." J.A. 51. MacDonald also suggested that they have sex in a shed in Johnson's grandmother's yard. Johnson declined both proposals, however, and she drove MacDonald back to the Home Depot parking lot. Nearly three months later, in December 2004, MacDonald filed a report with the Colonial Heights police maintaining
that Johnson had abducted and sexually assaulted him.
MacDonald thereafter met with and was interviewed by Detective
Stephanie Early. MacDonald advised Early that, sometime in September, Johnson had paged him and asked that he meet her in the Home Depot parking lot. MacDonald stated that, once they met, he got into Johnson's car and she drove them away. When MacDonald asked Johnson where she was going, she did not respond. MacDonald told her, "[T]his has got to stop, lose my number, I'm married, don't call me anymore."
J.A. 59.
MacDonald also advised Detective Early that he and
Johnson stopped at a location on Canterbury Lane in Colonial Heights, and "at that point Ms. Johnson forcibly removed his penis from his pants and performed oral sex against his will."
Id. MacDonald acknowledged that he knew Johnson was only seventeen years old.
Soon thereafter, Detective Early met with and interviewed Johnson, who gave a sharply conflicting account of what had occurred. Crediting Johnson's version of the events, Early secured three arrest warrants for MacDonald, [etc.]."

I imagine he suspected she would bring charges so he tried a preemptive strike.
Yes.
Look, we have to make things that are already illegal, more illegal. For the children. Oh, and so that we can sneak in some more corporate welfare for our big donors.
Rick Santorum.
-"sodomy laws properly exist to prevent acts which undermine the basic tenets of our society and the family."
Many prominent conservatives defended his statements.
Robert George wrote an essay titled Rick Santorum is Right after that quote came out. And here is the coy answer from Richard Nehaus from First Things magazine on whether he supports sodomy laws:
-Whether Texas should have and enforce an anti-sodomy law is for the people of Texas to determine. In New York, the enforcement of such a law would, in my judgment, be politically impossible under existing and foreseeable circumstances, and attempts to pass or enforce such a law would cause severe damage to the common good. In different places and different times, one might be led to a different prudential judgment.
So these folks don't believe in a constitutional right to sodomy? Where do they get off?
Neither of the sources you quoted *supported* laws to imprison adults for consensual, private sexual acts. In the Robert George article you cited, the author said this:
"This does not mean that states are obligated to criminalize all or any extramarital sex acts. What it means, simply, is that it is up to the states to decide whether to ban any such acts, and, if so, which ones. In making the determination to forbid or tolerate this or that form of sexual misconduct, be it fornication, adultery (with or without spousal consent), sodomy, prostitution, consensual adult incest, etc., legislators are free to bring to bear their best prudential judgment in weighing the pros and cons of alternative policy options. As with the regulation of gambling and drugs, the federal courts claim no jurisdiction to interfere in the policymaking process."
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....t-p-george
Gasp! Shudder! You mean that you can't run to the federal judiciary to overturn any law you don't like? Inconceivable!
And here's what Rick Santorum is right about according to Prof. George:
"Rick Santorum is right: There is no principle that courts can employ in picking and choosing among the range of possible consensual non-marital forms of sexual conduct for purposes of assigning constitutional protection. If marriage is overthrown as the principle that distinguishes protected from unprotected conduct in matters of sexuality, it will have to be replaced, in the end, by the idea of consent. No non-arbitrary grounds will be available for deciding that sodomy and fornication are "in," but consensual adultery, group sex, commercial sex, etc., are "out." The rational pressure for consistency will move courts in the direction of imposing by judicial fiat the agenda of fundamental social libertarianism. And that was Rick Santorum's point."
I see what you did there.
As far as the Constitution goes, these gentlemen are absolutely correct. As they haven't expressed an argument regarding consensual sodomy (as Ricky Santo has) I won't ascribe one to them, but suffice it to say I'm strongly against legislatures criminalizing such behavior.
So am I - I don't think sodomites or smokers should be persecuted - both the old Texas legislature and the current administration of Gauleiter Bloomberg are wrong.
But I don't pretend that the US Constitution addresses these issues. I don't believe that there's an open-ended right to privacy protecting anyone who wants to light up a cigarette or cigar. Nor do I believe that such a right protects someone who wants to do weird things with their sexual organs. The US Supreme Court probably agrees with me on the former proposition, while disagreeing on the latter. The question is why one set of habits is constitutionally protected while the other is subject to government restriction? The answer has everything to do with fashions and fads in the legal world, and very little to do with constitutional principle.
I think that's something that would fall under the Ninth Amendment IMO. In conjunction with the Fourteenth, that would make the Texas law invalid. But that's really beside the point Bo Cara was making. The fact is that there is a significant minority of social conservatives that do support anti-sodomy laws and I don't think it's nearly as fringe a position in that group as some conservatives say it is.
In Amanda's diseased mind, TEAM Red members actually go around doing things like this regularly.
If team blue does those same things, how much does anyone want to bet that she will find excuses for why they are actually good things to be doing?
Yet Parks herself sees no conflict between her roles as hobby farmer and fast-food tastemaker. "The same freshness I get out of my garden at home is what I try to get into McDonald's foods," she tells me. "To me, it's the same thing."
The feminist worldview is about fighting patriarchy and creating a more just society for everyone which in turn would benefit everyone ? men, women, children, animals and perhaps the environment.
Just stop it.
The Texas Legislatures dirty little secret.
Damn, she was lucky to get out alive.
As a bonus, it also talks about the faked theatrics of Senfronia Thompson last year. Remember that? When she stood up and said that a picture of breast feeding was "violence against women" and threatened to bloody anyone's nose who disagreed?
Validation seeking behavior. "Look at me! look at me! all the evul rethuglicans think I'm pretty!!!1!1!1!!"
Yeah, I am so sure she would never spread her legs for the right top man.
The uggos try to change the culture to level the playing field. Why the pretty ones help is beyond me. What kind of idiot reporter wouldn't take advantage of those opportunities?
Damn, she was lucky to get out alive
We weren't so lucky
"she was lucky to get out alive"
The unborn children should be so lucky.
And then there was Ann Richards, who could out-drink, out-spit, out-curse, and probably out-fight most of the good old boys she was up against. I liked her. She was a politician, but at least she had some personality to go with it.
She is a gun grabber. Fuck her.
I totally believed all this happened exactly as she describes it.
F1 engines are set for a big change next year, and Mercedes has released some audio of its new 1.6-litre turbo V6. Want to know what Hamilton's 2014 F1 racer will sound like?
I much prefer a different engine sound.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL0VVBc8PaA
I don't know if it's just the simulation, but that things revs up disturbingly quickly.
The current sound is still my favorite. If this is an accurate rendition of the new sound, I'm not crazy about it, but I can live with it.
It still sounds better than Indy cars.
Reagan gave us False Memories
The transfer of wealth from the bottom to the top, a hallmark of Reagan economic policy, was cloaked in moral terms, a righteous restoration of the rugged risk-taker's rewards, while the poor and vulnerable among us -- far from being people the community have a responsibility to care for -- were rebranded as loafers and takers unworthy of compassion or concern. Before long, defending the country from a phony war on Christmas became the cover for waging a real war on government. "You didn't build that"...had its antecedent in the '80s media deification of CEO cover boys, whose bootstrapped sagas somehow neglected to mention the public school teachers, or the publicly financed infrastructure and research, not to mention the regulations, and sometimes the corporate welfare, on which their ascendance actually depended.
The scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who were able to identify the individual neurons in mice brains that contained false memories were able to turn those memories on and off by using blue light transmitted by a fiber optic cable. It's tempting to imagine what it would be like if some of our human false memories -- like: unbridled capitalism made America a more godly nation; individual religious freedom made America a less moral nation -- could just as conveniently get the blue light treatment.
Reagan infected us with all of that bourgeois truth and facts and logic. he kept us from knowing the revolutionary truth.
They really are history repeating itself as comedy. It is like all of the kids who were too retarded to pass their Marxist studies class now own the movement.
The increase in income inequality began in 1976, before Reagan was elected, and accelerated during the '90s when liberal hero Bill Clinton was in office.
That seems to imply that income inequality had nothing to do with Ronald Reagan.
Am I reading this wrong or is this fucking asshole literally dreaming of being able to mind control the entire country?
No. That is exactly what he would like to do. And yes, he would gladly force everyone in America to have some kind of treatment to force them to think as he thinks they should.
These people are terrifying if you get past how silly and stupid they are.
The more ideological your are, the more totalitarian, it seems.
you are not reading it wrong.
He's writing the article as eulogy to a recently deceased social scientist who during the Reagan years published a study warning that "radical individualism" was a threat to America and society.
The wisdom of Sadbeard:
You know, he has a point here. After all, the last major bipartisan bill to pass Congress bailing out the banks was widely praised and loved by the American people.
Oh wait, no...
Just like Obamacare got even more popular. God he is pathetic. I really feel sorry for him. He is just not all there.
Want to know what Hamilton's 2014 F1 racer will sound like?
An air raid siren.
What did I win?
Why don't women like me?
This article reads like a PUA recruiting piece.
To begin with, you interview women who reject you.
That's one thing that women probably hate.
A few come right out and say he's too nice and respectful.
Truthfully, I know it's a cop-out and that it's probably my complete lack of ability to read certain basic social cues. Or maybe it's the fact that I'm a short, gawky nerd. Or maybe it's because I lived at my parents' house until three months ago and asking your friend to let you borrow his apartment to watch Being Elmo with an aspiring model who clearly isn't interested in you is pathetic. Who knows?
No, you're pretty much spot on there Poindexter.
And the Jezebel response:
Contempt for what they've created. Classic.
Woman number 3 actually made me feel this way. Girls one and two were just way the fuck out of his league. Its like he beefed up to fight in the next weight class and got smashed. Foolish, but respectable. Girl 3 was just... a disaster.
They were in middle school. I don't think it was that much of a disaster.
No, the adult conversation where he remembered all the stupid shit and she hadn't thought of them in years.
Yeah, I guess that was kinda sad.
Emily is a waitress/singer-songwriter from Sherman Oaks. I interviewed her while driving her home, 20 minutes after she told me we should just be friends.
LOL, is this not satire?
This comment made me click on the friggin link.
The whole thing seemed like a put-on.
An unemployed "writer/actor" nerd with "panic attacks" can't find a date to save his life -- well gee, I think I found his problem.
Smoke more pot? Oh wait, that's the solution.
There is no amount of evidence that you could provide to convince me that this was a real conversation between human beings. No one who is able to use a computer can possibly be that jaw-droppingly unable to pick up on social cues.
She's trolling him. Or he made them all up whole cloth and is trolling the Jezzies. Even odds.
I have met dudes that were this retarded. It happens. They are completely unable to even try and think from the woman's perspective. Like he said in the story, women are like aliens to him.
U mad, Marcotte?
That would explain a lot about Shreek...
they get really mad when you do this, by the way, because part of their self-righteous worldview includes a belief that they should be able to push their agenda without being examined or questioned too closely.
Yeah because Marcotte is such a model of openness and intellectual inquiry. These people really are nothing but a ball of self hating projection.
If I were a lazy fuck who didn't have better things to do, I'm sure I'd have a lot of fun pulling her posts on the Duke Laccrosse players and mapping her behavior to her comments on trolling. 🙂
It would go right over her head. People like Marcotte don't think. They emote.
I don't want her to become self aware. I want her rage-induced flailing to amuse me.
Actually, I don't. Her racist and sexist prejudice makes her really boring. 70 years ago she'd be one of those happy smiling people posing around a nigger who'd been strung up from a tree for disrespecting a white woman. I really prefer not to have anything to do with her kind.
Just think, She is this bad as a young and sort of cute woman. How pathetic and angry she is going to be when she is old?
Nah, Amanduh is still funny. She is sincere enough and harmless enough that I would find it very difficult to actually hate her for her inanity.
John is right. When someone projects this much, they're never going to become self-aware. Because it would mean realizing they are everything they hate.
Guess who?
Lie #1: U.S. corporate tax rates are higher than the tax rates of other big economies. Wrong. After deductions and tax credits, the average corporate tax rate in the U.S. is lower. According to the Congressional Research Service, the United States has an effective corporate tax rate of 27.1 percent, compared to an average of 27.7 percent in the other large economies of the world.
Lie #2: U.S. corporations need lower taxes in order to make investments in new jobs. Wrong again. Corporations are sitting on almost $2 trillion of cash they don't know what to do with. The 1000 largest U.S. corporations alone are hoarding almost $1 trillion.
Rather than investing in expansion, they're buying back their own stocks or raising dividends. They have no economic incentive to expand unless or until consumers want to buy more, but consumer spending is pinched because the middle class keeps shrinking and the median wage, adjusted for inflation, keeps dropping.
Lie #3: U.S. corporations need a tax break in order to be globally competitive. Baloney. The "competitiveness" of American corporations is becoming a meaningless term because most big U.S. corporations are no longer American companies at all. The biggest have been creating way more jobs abroad than in the U.S.
Okay, so the second part of each paragraph is the lie? Kind of an odd construction.
This is the worst left wing talking point. Corporations don't hire based on the amount of money they're sitting on. They hire based on the amount of marginal value they can expect to get from particular employee. If an employee will cost a corporation money, they obviously aren't going to hire him.
Also, I guess Robert Reich. I'm impressed he didn't call anyone a Nazi.
The fact that they are sitting on that money is in an indictment of Obama's economic policy. They are not investing it because Obama has caused them to conclude there is no good way to make a buck right now.
Uncertainty means people sitting on cash. Happens every downturn, and they continue to bitch about it. Because they think it's their money.
Reich calling anyone a Nazi is some awesome projection. These people just can't help it.
I bet he has a little Nazi uniform with an American flag on it and pretends in a secret room in his basement. Mein President!
Corporations are sitting on almost $2 trillion of cash they don't know what to do with. The 1000 largest U.S. corporations alone are hoarding almost $1 trillion.
Hoarders. It never occurs to Reich that our crony capitalist state and insane regulatory state might make it more advantageous for companies to hold that money rather than invest it.
After deductions and tax credits, the average corporate tax rate in the U.S. is lower.
Seems like we could lower the regulatory oversight burden, set the universal tax rate to 24% have a clean win.
Oh, they know what to do with it, it's just that doing so right now to too risky or insufficiently profitable.
After deductions and tax credits, the average corporate tax rate in the U.S. is lower. According to the Congressional Research Service, the United States has an effective corporate tax rate of 27.1 percent, compared to an average of 27.7 percent in the other large economies of the world.
Disingenuous bullshit. Out of one side of his mouth, Reich decries TEH KKKORPRASHUNS for gaming the system, then says they pay lower taxes than anywhere else, so long as they game the system.
The 1000 largest U.S. corporations alone are hoarding almost $1 trillion.
HOARDERS! WRECKERS! CAPITALISTS! COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES!
They have no economic incentive to expand unless or until consumers want to buy more, but consumer spending is pinched because the middle class keeps shrinking and the median wage, adjusted for inflation, keeps dropping.
I would like to see Reich's definition of "middle class" before I give his commentary on the middle class any weight.
The "competitiveness" of American corporations is becoming a meaningless term because most big U.S. corporations are no longer American companies at all. The biggest have been creating way more jobs abroad than in the U.S.
Fucking cost of labor! How do they work?
Lie #1 isn't a lie, because he is not factoring in state and local taxes.
Twenty things you didn't know about Germany
Nothing about the war? Come, let us be reasonable, we need a Nazi factoid.
One thing about Hugo Schwyzer's recent supposed suicide attempt: he claims his means was to take a "whole bottle" of clonazepam (Klonopin). Shouldn't someone who claims to have been dealing with mental health issues for most of his life know that ODing on benzos alone is very unlikely to be lethal?
Then again no one accused him of being bright.
(I guess if you gave him the benefit of the doubt it could have just been a heat-of-the-moment, grab-anything act of desperation. But I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt.)
Yeah, I also found that to be questionable. He "overdoses" on a drug that will just make you sleep for a few days. Oops!
I assume he knew exactly what he was doing. The classic alcoholic/addict move of becoming so pitiful that even the people who literally wanted to kick the shit out of you are so repulsed they'd rather just never have anything to do with you again. Also, I don't know all the rules, but I don't think you get to keep your 15 years clean when you OD on pills, even if they were prescribed.
This was a giant fuck you to his mom...
I fucking hate BPD. I absolutely hate it. When someone who has it lacks the cojones to face up to their problems but instead just sociopathically decides to submit to it and pleasure in hurting the people that care about them, it fills me with disgust. It's amazing how much financial and emotional damage those assholes can cause.
Agreed. It is unfortunate, but my grandmother would have nothing to do with my aunt because my aunt is BPD and crazy. And my grandmother saw plenty of it from her mother.
After deductions and tax credits, the average corporate tax rate in the U.S. is lower. According to the Congressional Research Service, the United States has an effective corporate tax rate of 27.1 percent
I wonder how much it costs those evul kkkorporations to take advantage of those deductions and credits.
Marcotte is -- wait just a goddamn minute, actual *human beings* watch Doctor Who?!
Yeah, it's really weird that when a character is literally reincarnated he has the same general parameters of appearance. Or did she also want this new Doctor to have a Boston accent and be missing a limb?
I'm going to be honest, but I'm surprised the show didn't cave to these demands. I'd love to know what when on when they were making the decision.
They don't give a shit about people who will watch the show no matter what?
Well, that's debatable. Partisans and KULTUR WAR morons will actually boycott entertainment if they don't like some political aspect of it.
Partisans and KULTUR WAR morons will SAY they will boycott entertainment. I'd bet very few actually do, but the ones who don't will feel guilty about it or say they are only doing it so they can get material for a Very Important Article about the show othering a real or imagined minority or being patriarchal.
Me too, because there did seem to be a lot of squawking along those lines. For me, the really interesting thing about it is they chose an old(ish) dude instead of yet another kid.
While this is a disappointment to those of us hanging onto the thin hope that the Doctor would be a woman or person of color
Just stunning.
A few years ago there was rumor that it'd be Jennifer Saunders (for a one-off episode). I really like the idea of Saunders having a season or two as the Doctor, not because a lady doctor would be a thumb in the eye of the patriarchy but because Saunders is funny and I think it'd give them room to do something fresh with the show.
Jesus, that would be awesome - only because she's awesome, not because "we need a woman Doctor."
Wait a minute, I just remembered that Patsy has played the Doctor - haven't seen it, though.
Oh, find this and watch it. The whole special is hilarious.
I am holding out hope that the next Wonder Woman will be an African-American male.
I was hoping they'd bring back Mr Ed, or maybe Flipper. Damned speciesists!!
Corporate America has Murdered Geek Culture
We live in a world where comic book movies pull in record breaking box office numbers again and again, where Game of Thrones not only outsells mainstream fiction in book form but draws huge commercial and critical acclaim in television form...What was traditionally understood as geek culture is now the mainstream. Geeks are no longer marginalized outsiders; they're the new normal.
[snip]
Most alarming is that, almost exclusively, the media being so strongly identified with is corporate and ruthlessly capitalist in nature. Star Trek might present an optimistic and inspiring vision of the future, which any American liberal would like to see, but it's a vision wholly owned and operated by CBS. Star Wars is now held by Disney and all of their attendant copyright shenanigans. So, too, is Marvel Comics ? a company recently focused to an alarming degree on denying ownership rights to its content creators (watching comic book fans contorting themselves in order to justify continuing to support Marvel while admitting their favorite creators are left destitute by the company's practices is depressing). Even Dungeons and Dragons ? market leader in a dwindling cottage industry ? is run by a subsidiary of toy behemoth Hasbro.
You mean profit-seeking companies are entertaining us?!
Then go build your own culture you pathetic little nerd.
This is my response every time I hear leftists complain about companies not paying their workers enough. If you know so much about running a business, why don't you start one, pay your workers whatever you want, and outcompete the knuckle-dragging greedy capitalists. It should be easy, conservatives are dumb, right?
Well, jeez, it would be easy but they don't have the capital/connections/privilege. Don't you know anything?
I believe the proper progressive response is "RACE TO THE BOTTOM OMG!"
I was taking an international trade and finance class in college. So obviously we learned about Smith/Ricardo and all the various models of international trade and how countries gain from trade.
I was walking back from class with one of my progressive friends who was going on about how trade creates a RTTB and is bad for poor people.
He is currently at Harvard Business School and is an intern at the White House. He is exactly the wrong kind of person to have in charge, but I would not be the least bit surprised if he's a Senator some day. He's good-looking, well-liked and ambitious. Yet does not understand economics.
I haven't spoken to him in years, so it's possible he's changed, but given that he just got an internship at the White House I'm sure he's still progressive and in love with power.
Umm... This guy apparently missed the entire 1980s where "geek" culture was created whole cloth by Hasbro and Disney. Star Wars? Hasbro action figures. D&D -- remember it on Saturday morning cartoons? etc, ad nauseum.
Is there any part of "geek culture" that wasn't linked to selling a product? Last I looked Gary Gygax died a pretty rich man.
Late 80s/early 90s BBSes.
Fuck nerds and their ridiculous "culture". There is nothing more pathetic than the attention-seeking hipsters who go to Comic-Con and waste their time and money on toys long after adolescence.
Even Dungeons and Dragons ? market leader in a dwindling cottage industry ? is run by a subsidiary of toy behemoth Hasbro.
In your face, sucker. My group still plays with our old 2nd Edition rulebooks.
What did I win?

Wendy Davis, the Texas filibuserer, opens mouth, inserts foot. Suggests most women are ignorant of abortion; confesses her own ignorance of the Gosnell case:

That'll happen.
I'm assuming that all those people that think that Citizens United was decided wrongly are very upset at these corporations planning on airing a pro-Hillary documentary?
Why are you bringing up this impartial television documentary? I thought were were discussing corporate influence on the media?
No, that's entirely different.
Kid's Jeopardy! contestant feels cheated over misspelled Final Jeopardy answer not being accepted
Thomas Hurley III, an eighth-grader from Newtown, Conn. who appeared on Jeopardy!'s kids tournament last week, says his Final Jeopardy answer was unfairly ruled incorrect.
Under the category "Famous Documents,'' the Final Jeopardy question referenced an 1863 document that President Abraham Lincoln called a "fit and necessary war measure.'' The correct answer was "Emancipation Proclamation," but Hurley flubbed the spelling, writing "Emanciptation Proclamation."
Photos: Actors who trash-talked their own work
"Because he misspelled it badly ... that's unfortunate. The judges are ruling against you," host Alex Trebek told a chagrined Hurley, who had wagered $3,000 on the answer. (He walked away with $2,000 as the second runner-up.)
The contestant who finished in first place ended with $66,000, so it would have been impossible for Hurley to win regardless, but he was still disappointed about the judges' decision.
Seems a little harsh... but then again an eighth-grader should know how to spell "emancipation."
It's harsh to call it badly misspelled, but it is misspelled.
Those activist judges..........
I always liked that about Jeopardy--fuck you, close isn't good enough.
Preliminary or Final? If the former, then the 1863 date is wrong.
Because of an extra t? I swear they've accepted worse mistakes than that.
Wait, he's bitching because he was ranked wrong in the loser parade? Go the fuck home, snowflake. You lost. Doesn't matter if you were 2 or 3. You still lost.
Wait, he's bitching because he was ranked wrong in the loser parade? Go the fuck home, snowflake. You lost. Doesn't matter if you were 2 or 3. You still lost.
I'm sure he's more concerned about the potential 6k he didn't get. He could've gone home with 8k and instead took home 2k over a loose t. I'd be pissed about that, imagine how an 8th grader would feel.
2k is the consolation prize for second place, it wouldn't have mattered how much he had and it didn't drop him to 3rd place.
Then I formally retract my defense of him.
"Second runner up" means "Third place" in my understanding.
After review of the video:
Before Final Jeopardy
Contestant 1: $36,600
Contestant 2 (whiner): $9600
Contestant 3: $6400
Contestant 3 wrote "2nd Amendment", and lost $3200
Contestant 2 wrote "Emanciptation Proclamation", and lost $3000
After Final Jeopardy
Contestant 1: $66,600
Contestant 2 (whiner): $6600
Contestant 3: $3200
No harm no foul, end of discussion.
sorry, the squirrels stole my end bold tag.
Then the article fucked up.

Excellent.
Everyone remember Schrodinger's Rapist? Whereby any action or offense a woman takes towards a man is justified due to the threat of rape?
Apparently, it should only apply to non-black men.
(If you think you grew up immune to this training, take the Implicit Association Test on race, which measures unconscious bias.)
I took the IAT in high school. It told me I was slightly racist against white people.
You can always tell a nonscientist by phrases like that. It doesn't "measure bias." It measures your speed at sorting words and images and uses those data to infer bias.
I will also note, without taking a position on what it may be, that the "relevant" stat here (which still wouldn't justify anything) is probably the racial breakdown of stranger rapes.
Good point.
