Join Reason & Kennedy in NYC for a Book Party Celebrating The Kennedy Chronicles on 7/31 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.!
Join Reason magazine Editor in Chief Matt Welch and the rest of Reason's NYC-based staff for a book party celebrating The Kennedy Chronicles: The Golden Age of MTV Through Rose Colored Glasses, the new book by Kennedy.
Before working to expose the horrors of government intervention to millions of viewers at ReasonTV, Kennedy brought the cutting edge of culture into our living rooms during the 1990s through her outrageous segments as an MTV VJ, host of Alternative Nation, and on-the-spot correspondent for MTV News. In The Kennedy Chronicles, she gives us a backstage pass to the cable network that defined a generation.
The legendary Kurt Loder will interview Kennedy about her book before Kennedy takes questions from the audience. We'll have food, drinks, and 90s tunes for you to enjoy throughout the night.
- What: Book Party with Kennedy and Reason
- When: Wednesday, July 31 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
- Where: Play Bar at The Museum of Sex in New York City
Don't miss out on this great event. RSVP to reason.nyc@reason.org or online at http://reason-nyc-the-kennedy-chronicles.eventbrite.com by July 24.

I'm only going if Kenndey is naked on a horse.
How about if Welch is instead?
As long as he takes off his glasses.
Perv
Yes?
MTV had a golden age?
Sure. Back when they first launched, with music videos and stuff.
It was really good when they first kicked off, because they would play almost anything.
It was like early ESPN, which was totally outside the sports establishment, would say anything, and would broadcast Australian Rules Football as a major feature.
I remember being able to watch sumo--SUMO!!--in the mornings before school on ESPN or ESPN2. Now it's a constant repeat on stories about celebrity players and sad, melodramatic offerings about so-and-so.
Instead of making a network about sports, they made a women's network about sports.
I liked the old 2night shows on ESPN2.
It's really the worst thing in sports. I don't watch anything ever on ESPN now except game telecasts.
The downfall of all cable specialty channels is original programming. USA Network used to show kung-fu movies all Saturday afternoon. Sci-Fi used to show old science fiction shows and movie. MTV used to play music.
I think there's a lot of truth to this, though I think some original programming can be good. Like BSG, for instance.
FX network's original programming has sort of bumped them back into the mix after being lackluster for the longest time.
When they first launched, I loved that they ran the original Mission: Impossible series every day.
Agreed. The History Channel used to be just wonderful. Great documentaries. Now I've got Ice Road Truckers and fucking Swamp People.
The History Channel used to be just wonderful.
The History Channel existed before the current version with reality-based shows like Pickers, Pawn Stars, and Swamp People? Oh... you mean The All World War II All The Time Channel.
Bullshit. There were some documentaries about pre-WWII Germany they'd show on there as well.
Yes, and they did WWI, too, sometimes.
H2 seems to be where all the decent History Channel programming went.
They show that on cable now?
The "Music Television" part of the concept was great. Wonder where that went.
They created MTV2 for that, specifically to show music videos after the main channel had gone to tv shows. Guess what it shows now
Yeah, from launch until sometime in the mid-80s. The beginning of the end started as soon as they launched non-music video programming, which probably can be traced to Remote Control. Though that at least had Kari Wuhrer.
Blame Kurt Loder for knocking the VJs off newscasts and starting the downward spiral.
I blame 'The Real World.'
As soon as they got rid of "Headbangers Ball" and "Yo, MTV Raps", it all went to shit.
They still have Headbangers Ball. It was briefly canceled in the mid 90's but then was brought back on MTV2.
More appropriate would be to say "once Adam Curry wasn't the host of Headbangers Ball any more, it went to shit".
No love for Yo! MTV Raps?
Why am I still doing this?
Abe Vigoda, Dead or Canadian?
How many mittens would you have to knit for Def Leppard?
The drummer could wear one on his penis.
That would be some penis. No homo.
Kari Wuhrer. Damn, haven't thought of her in a while. She was almost enough to make Beastmaster 2 worth it.
Stick to the first one, it had Tanya Roberts in her prime. And it was directed by Don Coscarelli!
The first one was art. And didn't it have that dude from Good Times in it?
Kari Wuhrer. Damn
This, this and this.
Yes. When MTV was music oriented.
Where can I get a poster-size picture of that book cover?

Time to get the war elephants out of retirement.
Happy Birthday Monica Lewinsky! It's also National Hotdog Day!
Was this a coincidence? If it was cigar day I wouldn't be asking, but there is room for interpretation when it is hotdog day...
A gubernatorial candidate in Virginia wants to make it illegal to put a hot dog in a bun.
Am I supposed to ask what kind of bun? Or is the right question "in whose bun?"
Hooray!
Interesting. I just had hotdogs for lunch.
Any SoCal reasonoids going to the Kennedy book thingy this Thursday at the Mothership? Banjos and I are gonna try to be there.
Will Banjos be riding naked on a horse, too? I hear all the women will be doing that.
Maybe. And I'll be throwing her flowers as she rides in.*
*She let me buy myself a GMT Master II this past weekend as a sort of early birthday present.
I see dunphy made it into the am links. All of the regulars are trolls now and he's something... I better stop before he claims I'm obsessed with him.
I responded to him and he ran away again. I guess he's not really about defending his position beyond name-calling and petulance.*
*And it's not nearly as good as my name-calling and petulance.
I might go if I could find a ride up there. Waiting to hear back from a few friends first.
Where are you coming from? If we can swing it, maybe we'll pick you up.
I'm in Irvine right now for school, but was planning on visiting my parents in Cerritos Thursday.
Damn, Kennedy is looking good for her age! I wonder what her secret is. Diet? Exercise? Joie de vivre?
The blood of orphans who fail at monocle making.
