Police Photographer Who Released Photos of Boston Bomber Manhunt Reportedly Relieved of Duty
Government photos traditionally public domain

The cop who released photos today of the hunt for alleged Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been relieved of duty, this according to tweets from John Wolfson, the editor of Boston Magazine, to which Sergeant Sean Murphy, a tactical photographer with the Massachusetts State Police, provided the photographs as well as a statement. Murphy said he was moved to release the pictures to counter what he perceived as the glorification of alleged Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover of the most recent issue of Rolling Stone. Here's part of what Murphy told Boston Magazine:
"As a professional law-enforcement officer of 25 years, I believe that the image that was portrayed by Rolling Stone magazine was an insult to any person who has every worn a uniform of any color or any police organization or military branch, and the family members who have ever lost a loved one serving in the line of duty. The truth is that glamorizing the face of terror is not just insulting to the family members of those killed in the line of duty, it also could be an incentive to those who may be unstable to do something to get their face on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
"I hope that the people who see these images will know that this was real. It was as real as it gets. This may have played out as a television show, but this was not a television show. Officer Dick Donohue almost gave his life. Officer Sean Collier did give his life. These were real people, with real lives, with real families. And to have this cover dropped into Boston was hurtful to their memories and their families. I know from first-hand conversations that this Rolling Stone cover has kept many of them up—again. It's irritated the wounds that will never heal—again. There is nothing glamorous in bringing more pain to a grieving family.["]
Murphy doesn't mention Dick Donohue was likely hit by friendly fire. It's unclear what, if anything, in the pictures Murphy released could be plausibly considered sensitive information. Government photos are traditionally in the public domain and these look like they ought to be too, and ought to have been released earlier, and not just as a response to a perceived slight by a music magazine.

". . . an insult to any person who has every worn a uniform of any color or any police organization . . ."
Wow, these guys are just FULL of themselves.
"Officer Dick Donohue almost gave his life. Officer Sean Collier did give his life."
So Murphy, how many *civilians* were killed and injured?
"Acceptable degree of collateral damage"
I was thinking the same thing. Like the civilians who were killed to start the whole off don't count for shit because a cop got killed?
NOW you see the light - thank you!
/FOP
Because the true victims of the Boston bombers were... the police.
glamorizing the face of terror is not just insulting
Like Boston PD in military gear going door to door, street by street emptying houses at gunpoint without warrants or probable cause?
^++THIS++^
HA HA HA HA HA!!!! That is the most pathethic use of "tactical" since the "tatical" pen. (Yes, that's a thing, folks.)
*pathetic
Man, I'm laughing so hard right now.
Tactical photographer. Does he do tactical weddings and bar mitzvahs?
Back in the day, everybody paid to take a picture was "tactical"
They all wore this crazy uniform with a military looking vest where they carried all there camera do-dads and they all looked like they were stuck with Tom Hanks on FedEx island.
Heh. Very true.
I had a LA Times photog and reporter with me when I was stopping by polling places in NE Afghanistan in 2004. The photog had all the dangling cameras, the tan vest with 8 million pockets, pouches and zippers... the reporter looked like he had been hitting the Banana Republic catalog a bit hard.
Did he have a shotgun shell bandoleer to hold all of his little film bottles?
Was Eleanor of Aquitaine's marriage to Henry II tactical or strategic?
Strategic, unless she was dressed in all black with a tactical quill in her hand.
He's not to be confused with the strategic photographers. They've got bachelors degrees
since the "tatical" pen.
Is that a pen you use to draw tatas?
That's the titical pen, bro.
What a joke. Not like the tactical turtleneck. The tactleneck.
Pretty sure that anything on Archer is a joke. But usually a good one.
From Marines hunting terrorists in burning deserts, SAR expeditions in bone chilling mountains, SWAT officers executing high risk warrant service, EMTs functioning in extreme conditions, or a civilian working in a non-permissive environment. All of these special operations groups have something in common - they all require a pen that they can depend on.
I think I just felt an aneurysm pop
So this guy's genus plan for justice was releasing photos which he has no idea how they will affect the case. Not that I am against the photos being released, but maybe he should have checked with a detective, or at least officer Levitt.
His plan seems to be "RESPECK MAH AUTHORITUH!!!!"
But this is the sort of bootlicking attitude I got when I linked elsewhere to the story about the Dunkin Donuts shops staying open during the manhunt when everything else was requested to shut down.
Around these parts, it is anyplace that sells a hot dog. Except Sonic.

TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT THE MOTHERFUCKIN' BOAT.
OT: Chris Matthews literally apologizes on behalf of all white people for the Zimmerman verdict and other examples of racism.
Hey Matthews, can I get some repariations for the time that old lady clerk followed me and my band nerd best friend through the jazz aisle of the music store while ignoring the mob of White, black-trench-coated teenagers that were robbing her blind in the front of the store?
Meanwhile, Chrissy refuses to apologize for his wretched television show, his open cheerleading for TEAM Blue, and the Tazmanian Devil-like drivel that he spews in place of rational thought.
Chris Matthews is NOT the emperor of all white people.
And he doesn't rule the night. Nobody does.
There's one reliable facet about Chris Matthews: he knows how his bread is buttered. I don't interpret this as Chris Matthews literally jumping up on a soap box to try appeasing the black masses, I see it as Matthews cashing in with a fairly obvious publicity ploy. How anyone else fails to recognize it is beyond my ken.
I'd like to apologize to all non-hispanic white people for reading the headline for this story and nodding to myself and thinking: yep, this fits the profile of a non-hispanic white person. I feel so bad I'm going to pay myself some reparations.
He's a lefty dumbshit who used to be a cop. Fuck that guy.
Edward Alsworth Ross did not consider my "race" to be white. Apparently I am supposed to be hitting the lottery.
I hope Matthews has a Sicilian best friend to play cards with.
All in all, I think Murphy failed. That first picture of him makes him look kind of gangsta. What with the laser sights and all...
My thoughts. You know what's likely to cast Tsarnaev in an undignified, villainous light? Probably not the photo of him bloodily heaped at the bottom of a boat.
I've no particular sympathy for this man or his brother or their shitbrained cause, but my preference in seeing justice prevail doesn't involve reveling in the gory images of my battered enemies. It involves quickly dispatching those rendered guilty by a civilian trial, and moving the fuck on with life.
And you're in rare form tonight, HM, what with your appalling typos. You been drinking tonight, sir?
Actually, I was. Old Fashioned-s.
It was on 24/7, but really...24/7. Who gives a fuck?
Detroit Files for Bankruptcy
it was also in the PM links 2x
That's what I get for going to my W-2 job and trying to make taxable income. I miss everything good.
Hearing interviews with various state apparatchiks, you'd think Detroit is due for an economic renaissance after bilking its creditors and settling with its pensioners. I suppose they're pleased with themselves, having bought a few months' reprieve.
There are no repercussions to bankruptcy!
I'd buy that for a dollar!

Hit Single is a stretch
Happy to've graduated high school in the last generation before phones achieved this talismanic presence among kids that young.
Probably. I guess I wouldn't know, since I didn't have one to find out. Oooh! Pelosi logic!
Herewith an article about some policemen with a case of the sadz because one of their dogs is old about to hand in his doggy collar:
http://boston.cbslocal.com/201.....d-to-rest/
Interesting to compare their tender feelings for their dog with the way they treat yours.
Their dogs are Trained. They're Professionals. They serve the public, unlike your mutt which can't respect authority.
Remember the Louis Vuitton-loving, luxury-obsessed Buddhist monk, who is at the centre of a religious scandal? Well now he's on the run for a string of alleged crimes
Had he choked out a retarded kid... to death, he'd still be on duty. It's about priorities.
wow, shoot a dog, hit a handcuffed person, run over / shoot / tase an unarmed dude... but this is what gets you canned in the farce??
I thought that photographs taken by a government official in the course of their duties were in the public domain.
Meh. They glorify both killers and cops. Not to be all relativistic.
But I do think they need to cool it a little about the cop hero worshiping.
It's funny, my buddy simply can't stand cops. He used to play hockey with them and considered them the biggest, arrogant, ignorant pricks who played dirty. Once in a blue moon a real, tough hockey player would ram one into the boards hard to the delight of all. He still practically slams the phone down whenever I ask about the police.
Show me someone who trusts the police, and I'll show you someone who has never been accused of a crime or been the victim of a crime.
As someone who has been playing old-man baseball for the last 20 years, I can assure you that your buddy's account is 98% accurate. This is true of the teams made up mostly of cops - the occasional cop on a non-cop team is generally as sporting as the rest of the players in the league (which isn't saying much, but still) - it says something about those cops who don't want to spend their off-time with a bunch of other cops.
Hey dick face, they literally called him a monster on the cover. I realize that you can be barred from serving as a cop for having too high an IQ, but it's gotten so bad that they let in illiterates?
Hey fuckhead, what about the 3 people killed in the blasts, along with the hundreds of people injured? Do they really not count at all just because they didn't have a fucking badge? You're saying that if in my cousin had run the marathon half an hour slower, or stuck around closer to the finish line afterwards, this wouldn't have been insulting to her memory because she photographs weddings for a living instead of crime scenes like you?
I know it's fucking real. My (other) cousin and her husband live in Watertown and were locked inside their house all day and not allowed to leave, until the cops finally gave up and the guy was promptly found by a regular person. My taxes are paying for thousands of cops to stand around and fail to catch one fucking guy.
You know who else were real fucking people? Krystle Campbell, L? Lingzi and Martin Richard? If we're counting injuries, there are 264 more people on the list, including 16 who lost a fucking limb. Go die in a fire you egotistical prick. Cops aren't worth any more than any other person.
Then maybe you shouldn't have released photos of him having just completed the act. But then again, you aren't smart enough to read, so I shouldn't expect you to be able to think about the consequences of your own actions.
PS: Fuck you too, Reason character limits.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Glamor is in the eye of the beholder. Anyone thinking the RS cover is glamorous needs mental help.
Just when I think I can't despise cops any more...
