Aide to Gun-Hating Rep. Conyers Gets Special Treatment After Toting a Pistol Into a Federal Courthouse

Rumor has it that

Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan) has never seen a restriction on firearms ownership he didn't like, but he would seem to cast a protective shadow over those close to him who violate the gun laws he favors. It's good to have friends in high places, especially when doing things those friends have been laboring to make very illegal for the rest of us.
From the Detroit Free Press:
The sign on the federal courthouse in Detroit reads plain and simple: No weapons allowed.
U.S. Rep. John Conyers' office manager broke that rule recently when security officers found a gun in her purse.
But unlike others caught doing the same thing, the Michigan Democrat's clerk didn't lose her job — or get criminally charged.
Huh. So, what happened to Conyers' Detroit office manager, Betty Petrenz, who packed heat into the verboten sanctum of a federal building? Reports the Free Press, "She got a ticket for having a gun on federal property and was recommended for pretrial diversion."
Not everybody gets off quite so easily.
Petrenz's fate stands in contrast to what happened to three others caught with guns inside federal court:
One woman — a clerk who worked at the courthouse for more than two decades — was fired last year after security officers discovered a gun in her purse.
A male law clerk for U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn agreed to resign after a gun was found in his briefcase last year.
Another woman, a real estate agent who was headed to bankruptcy court and had a gun in her purse (she had just shown a property), was criminally charged. Her gun permit had expired. She eventually got diversion.
According to court officials, all four individuals who were cited for having guns had permits to carry them, but accidentally brought them into the federal courthouse.
Petrenz's attorney is quoted as saying that she made an "honest mistake," but so do so many other people who are penalized under draconian laws. Aside from the cases cited above, Brian Aitken was sentenced to seven years in New Jersey for inadvertently breaking firearms laws that he made every effort to obey. His ordeal ended only after two years when the convictions (except one very obscure one) were overturned amidst public outcry.
There's no evidence, yet, that Rep. Conyers actively intervened to win leniency from draconian and stupid laws for Petrenz, though it's clear she was given much gentler treatment than others in her position. Honestly, nobody could blame Conyers if he did help a trusted staffer. But it's too bad he favors such draconian and stupid laws, and rough treatment, for the rest of us.

Little people don't matter, JD. You know that. The real question is whether he intervened, or whether the cops and prosecutor just automatically were lenient as soon as they found out who her boss was. If it's the latter, we are really getting to a fucked up place where we truly have an aristocrat class.
"...we are really getting to a fucked up place where we truly have an aristocrat class."
Which did you have in mind: Impotent dandies giving orders to a Laconic, enforcing caste of "guardians," or iron-fisted robber barons riding out to collect their taxes, get their rape on, and indulge in some of the ye olde ultraviolence?
The first one. The technocrats and credentialled overlords of America are such bloodless and cowardly wretches that they wouldn't dare attempt to enforce their bullshit themselves.
I am often surprised when liberals start down the "might makes right" line. Something tells me that, if the SHTF, they're not going to be using their great strength and fearsome tactical intellect to make their will a reality.
When the government collapses, the ideal moral place to have society probably isn't "might makes right." But, hey: why worry?
"Something tells me that, if the SHTF, they're not going to be using their great strength and fearsome tactical intellect to make their will a reality."
History would disagree. I remind you that during the last century the various incarnations of the progressive ideology managed to murder over 100 million people, imprisoned billions in state-prisons, started several major wars, and in general brought misery to the masses in the name of equality. For proof take a look at some of the more recent holdovers or converts: North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Great Britain, France.
True the modern left has become less bloodthirsty, but this is a built in feature. When you can use state agencies like the IRS, the DOJ, and a militarized police to basically crush your political dissent, who needs labor camps, and especially death camps, which might catch the attention of the masses and lead to a revolt? Why would progressives need physical violence to display their strength when opting to destroy people's lives without direct violence results in much less pain for the credntialed elite running the show?
I agree. I just think that, if things went that way, most progressives would find themselves on the murdered side, rather than the murdering side.
If things got that bad, there's fierce competition for being one of the enlightened progressives driving around in the big black cars, while the rest starve equally.
Somehow I doubt that there will be flashbangs in her future.
I don't know. That's Betty on the right. You don't think Conyers might be getting a little flashbang on the side?
Honestly, nobody could blame Conyers if he did help a trusted staffer.
Uhm, yes we can. Now, if Mr. Conyers made a public statement retracting his philosophies on gun control, or at minimum, the penalties for carrying a weapon into a federal courthouse, and spent the rest of his career making sure that future offenders of the rule get the same treatment his office staffer got, then and only then we could forgive Conyers for helping a trusted staffer.
2Chili, I don't know why this is such a big deal. You should know by now that laws are only for the peasants. The Patricians are our betters and can be trusted with assaulty-killy-mcdeath weapons of DOOM.
Not everything is bad for good old John Conyers. His wife just got out of prison.
A quote from on her former constituents-
"Metrotech customer Jerod Shannon would vote for her again if he could.
"Leave Ms. Conyers alone," said Shannon, 32, of northwest Detroit. "Let her live her life. She is a sweet lady who does a phenomenal job. Not to mention, she's still the best member of council."
And this my friends, is why Detroit will remain for the foreseeable future a barren wasteland best avoided at all costs.
The best part is... It was a cheap bribe. Something like $6000 for a $1.2 billion contract.
She had some epic moments on the Council, Reason had a few pieces about her if I remember correctly.
The bribe was just the finishing touch. But I'm with you, I wouldn't want to be in Conyers shoes.
"HONEEYYY!!! SO GREAT TO SEE YOU!!!......how was, uh, jail?"
And here's something Conyers would probably like to see made mandatory. An app where idiots could geo-tag known locations of guns and owners.
http://www.foxnews.com/tech/20.....latestnews
Totally indistinguishable from parody.
Here comes bullshit!
Whenever rationalization comes before the statement, you know the statement is going to be awful.
I installed the app. It's got a "read this first" which is jam-packed with "no totally trust me I'm pro-gun and this is just about safety guys" with links to a recent blog post about "the cult of gun politics".
Also the initial toast when starting up the map portion is "Finding dangerous guns..." Perhaps by inference here I can find some non-dangerous guns.
Look at me look at me I'm totally pro-gun and this is purely a safety issue:
He's going full troll, but just can't keep a straight face.
7/10? Too hyperbolic, but makes up for it with venom while pretending to be reasonable.
Oooh, troll him with some fast and furious things, see if he responds with "I support fast and furious! Traffic more guns to Mexican gangs!"
Must be nice to be a Lecturer with Security of Employment; I assume that means "fuck you, got my tenure."
Gee, I wonder what this guy's politics could possibly be.
Stinkin' commie. Needs a free ticket to a Victor Jara tribute show at the metric football stadium.
So he'd be OK with geotagging the locations of the Zapatista's guns...?
Well, that's great.
Back in December/January, I was wondering how long it would be until OFA had a "report your friends" app. Looks like we've got a step towards that.
Publicly report your ex-vegan friends. Report coworkers (government) suspicious behavior. Report gun owners.
Cool! I'm going to get that app and list every anti-gun politician I can find!
Let's start by listing Conyers with a $3000.00 Lapua ULR in .416 Barrett.
Won't somebody please think of the children?!?
So threats from people who own guns don't make you concerned for your safety, but people owning guns does?
Cool! Where's the app for geo-tagging known locations of probable sheep-fuckers?
Somehow I bet the largest concetration of these types will coincide with places where government is located? Amirite?
Maybe we should create an app that allows you to geotag known locations of non-gun owners.
I'd refine that and say: geotag the locations of people who threaten the Second Amendment. It's not a threat, of course. It just helps people keep track of those people who are threats to the liberty and safety of all Americans.
Downloading and filling with false markers.
By the way, it's a shitty app. Like, weapons grad shitty.
Fuck, I thought, when I first saw that photo, that it was Charles Rangel. Racist, I know, but really, can there be 2 black reps that are that corrupt? Yeah, I know, thinking that there could be, is racist, and thinking that there could not be is racist, and asking the question, is racist. It's just racist all the way down. Logical conclusion is, if you are a minority, you can't be questioned about corruption, because racism...
I saw the photo before I read anything, and I thought that as well.
I haven't seen stats, but the number of corrupt congresscritters who are black Democrats seems a bit higher than average.
Congratulations, this is now the characterization of how you see black congressmen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDuCoN23wbw
Papaya said black Democrats and during reconstruction those black congressmen would have largely been Republicans.
INTERNET PEDANT OUT!
Thanks, Irish.
From last year: "Although African-Americans only comprise 10 percent of the Congress, five of the six lawmakers presently being investigated by the House Ethics Committee are black.... In the latter part of 2009, all seven members of Congress engaged in formal House ethics inquiries were African-American."
It's almost like there's some correlation between corruption and one-party states. Almost.
I wouldn't call you racist, just blind.
Rangel always looks like he's asleep (because he is); Conyers always looks alert (he's looking for another victim and another vigilante at the same time).
Arms and ammunition (this has been proved by Science, comrades) are absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig.
Huh. So, what happened to Conyers' Detroit office manager, Betty Petrenz, who packed heat into the verboten sanctum of a federal building? Reports the Free Press, "She got a ticket for having a gun on federal property and was recommended for pretrial diversion."
In this case it's "who you know" AND "who you blow." Go figure.
Second Amendment rights for me, but not for thee.
"WELL-REGULATED militia, civilian!"
recommended for pretrial diversion
The U.S. Attorney, in his/her discretion, may divert any individual against whom a prosecutable case exists and who is not: ... A public official or former public official accused of an offense arising out of an alleged violation of a public trust; or Accused of an offense related to national security or foreign affairs.
a-HEM.
They forgot the exemption for unions.
Idiot thug idiot thugs in a federal building. No violation of public trust.
'Petrenz's attorney is quoted as saying that she made an "honest mistake,"'
She didn't make an *honest* mistake - you don't work for a gun control nut and carry a firearm if you're *honest*, you do that if you're a big fat hypocrite.
Damn, man, and I thought when some dude here... some Mick, I think it was, mentioned a rumor of late night links, I thought I wasn't bein duped at first. Well, fuck that, it seems, there ain't even a soul here in this fucking ghost town.

German economists create metric about 'Tax Attractiveness' which is essentially a measure of every type of tax within a country and how difficult a nation's taxes are to pay and to file. The United States comes in 95th out of 100, ahead of only Uruguay, Vietnam, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
Er.....the chart is alphabetical.
Interestingly, even in the full PDF they didn't break it out best to worst.
That's an embarrassing reading fuck up on my part, but it doesn't change anything. We're still 95th out of 100, just behind different countries.
I count us at 94th out of 100. Ha so eat it sucker!
I'm still getting 95. I see us behind Venezuela, The Philippines, Peru, Indonesia, and Korea.
Wait, I just saw Argentina. You're right.

Which debunks the claims of some Hate&Retard; commentators that the prosecution is throwing the case.
A random semi-colon in every post is my; promise to you!
Judge should say fuck no - you had your chance when you brought this to trial. You were so confident that you could prove murder that you didn't even consider that this guy might not be guilty (of murder) and now you want to punt? Screw you.
This is, indeed, the correct answer.
Discharging a firearm within city limits. Bet he did it.
Indeed, the correct answer, this is.
The prosecution WAS trying to throw the case.
