CNN Won't Renew Paula Deen's Contract Over Controversy

Probably over racism and not excessive reliance on butter

Celebrity chef Paula Deen's contract with The Food Network will not be renewed, the network said Friday, the latest fallout over revelations this week that she admitted to using a racial epithet in the past.

Deen's contract with The Food Network, which airs three shows featuring the chef, expires at the end of the month, the network said.

The Food Network's announcement followed reports earlier this week that Deen acknowledged in a lawsuit deposition to using the "N word," but denied telling racial jokes.

It also came the same day that Deen apologized in video statements posted online for "the wrong that I've done."

I grew up in the '60s. It wasn't thought of as a racial slur then, at least among kids. My best friend for a couple years (before we moved away) was a black kid and so far as he ever said, he didn't think a thing of it.

And for that matter, have you ever heard black folks talking to each other? You can't tell me a bunch of them don't call each other by it.

It says she is human.For all we know she is every kind of racist but in her deposition she admitted to telling her then husband, in private, that the fucking nigger stuck a gun in her face.

Times indeed were different then. When she was being raised in Georgia in the 40's and 50's, I'd imagine the adults taught her the n-word as a part of normal speech. Was a grammar-school-aged child supposed to know it was wrong?

If that contemporary use of the word is why she's being criticized, then that's a shame.

Many of my elder relations (older than Deen and signficantly more rural) use the word casually and without malice. They're aware that other people find it offensive, but they view that as a ridiculous modern oversensitivity to a benign and common word. When I've asked them why they use it, they always reply with some variant of "well, that's what they are" in the same spirit that an old-timer might explain why he uses negro instead of African-American.

If a young person uses the word in its modern meaning, have at them in the same spirit that we attack "liberals" and "progressives" who have destroyed those words for all decent human beings. But hurting the financial prospects of a seasoned citizen used the n-word forty years ago to describe someone who threatened her life? Fuck off. The critics' persecution is vastly more offensive than her use of the word.
