Of Renaissances and Improbable Comebacks, Comparing Coverage of Mark Sanford's Return to Politics to Anthony Weiner

Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress over a scandal involving sending racy pictures to female followers on Twitter, has announced a bid to run for mayor of New York City in this year's election. He's not the first politician attempting a comeback this year. Mark Sanford ran in, and won, the special election to fill the Congressional seat vacated by Tim Scott in South Carolina earlier this year. It's a good opportunity to compare coverage of somewhat similar subjects.

Here's the New York Daily News on Mark Sanford, a politician in another part of the country:

Disgraced former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is hoping that the campaign trail will pick up where the Appalachian one left off.

Two and a half years after revelations of an extramarital affair ended his political career, Sanford is poised to announce that he will seek an open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, The Weekly Standard reported.

Here's the Daily News on local pol Anthony Weiner:

Nearly two years after he resigned from Congress because of a sexting scandal, Anthony Weiner is running for mayor…

The unconventional campaign launch culminates a comeback tour that began in early April with a magazine interview and continued with the posting of a policy booklet online filled with ideas for the next mayor.

Although the sexting scandal made Weiner a national punchline, he has the potential to be a force in the mayoral race.

Here's the AP on Sanford:

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose political career was derailed four years ago because of his affair with an Argentine woman, is attempting an improbable comeback.

Once mentioned as a potential 2012 GOP presidential contender, the 52-year-old Republican announced Wednesday he will run for his old congressional seat in his home district along the South Carolina coast. Sanford, a penny-pinching conservative long before the tea party movement, said he is done apologizing for the affair and wants to restore "fiscal sanity" to Washington. He believes voters are ready to give him another shot in office…

But some have said the affair will be difficult for Sanford to shake. After all, he disappeared from the state for five days in 2009, telling his aides, who told the media, that he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Here's the AP on Weiner:

Anthony Weiner's run for a renaissance is officially on.

The ex-congressman whose career imploded in a rash of raunchy tweets two years ago said in a YouTube video announcement late Tuesday that he's in the New York City mayoral race. He'd said last month he was considering it.

"I made some big mistakes and I know I let a lot of people down, but I also learned some tough lessons," he said in the video. "I'm running for mayor because I've been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it my entire life. And I hope I get a second chance."

A poll last month showed half of registered Democrats in the city wouldn't consider supporting Weiner, but had the former Congressman finishing second behind just City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in the crowded primary field.

You compare Sanford to Wiener and miss the most important comparison? Standards are slipping

    1. VG Zaytsev   12 years ago

You mean the part where Sandford send dick pix to random women online?

    2. Rights-Minimalist Autocrat   12 years ago

I hate these fucking people. They are owed a life in politics, dammit. Any decent person would have disappeared from the public eye. Of course, Wiener and Sandford probably couldn't get a job at a private company (especially Wiener, as he seems more likely to harass your female employees).

There is no difference in mentality between someone like Wiener and someone like Lindsay Lohan or Amanda Bynes. Actually, Lohan and Bynes are less despicable, as they don't earn their money from the public dole.

      1. Aloysious   12 years ago

+1 agreement. Also, add a healthy dose of contempt.

      2. HazelMeade   12 years ago

Sanford had an extramarital affair with an Argentinian woman.

Weiner sent dick-shots to people on twitter.

        There's a difference, don't you think?

        1. Rrabbit   12 years ago

Sanford used taxpayers money to fund some of those fun trips with his girlfriend.

        2. Rights-Minimalist Autocrat   12 years ago

If you eliminate the taxpayer funded trips: yes, there's a difference, but they both should be far more embarrassed than they seem to be.

          1. HazelMeade   12 years ago

Well, perhaps, most people get embarassed after they realize how foolish they've been when they fall out of love. Course, Weiner wasn't in love, he just likes showing people his dick.
But someday Sanford will probably be all "What the fuck did I see in her? I can't believe I did THAT."

            1. Rights-Minimalist Autocrat   12 years ago

I don't think falling in love is the embarrassing part. It was just the public nature of the whole scandal. A governor disappeared for six days. That's kind of a thing.

Let's also not forget that he went to his ex-wife's house to watch the Super Bowl with his son, despite the fact that he was absolutely forbidden from visiting his ex-wife's house.

"A husband and wife fall out of love, and the husband falls in love with someone else" is only part of this story.

If I had dragged my family through the public ringer like that, I would shy away from doing it again.

          2. Spartacus   12 years ago

Well, they've gotten over it, so everyone else should be over it too, right?

            1. Rights-Minimalist Autocrat   12 years ago

If that were true, then we should consider a complete lack of shame to be a character strength.

          3. Rrabbit   12 years ago

I think both Sanford and Wiener felt embarrassed only about getting caught.

            1. Rights-Minimalist Autocrat   12 years ago

It seems pretty obvious that successful politicans are incapbable of feeling embarrassment. Sociopathy is a spectrum, apparently.

        3. Zeb   12 years ago

I don't care. If I were going to care about Sanford it would be about the lying, not the affair. As for Weiner, there are plenty of reasons that actually matter not to like him.

  2. wareagle   12 years ago

you mean the media has different rules for how it covers Dems and Repubs? Wow; next you'll be telling me the sun rises in the east and water is wet.

    1. Bardas Phocas   12 years ago

They're not really "rules" - rather 'guidlines' for bias.

so much for capturing people for intel. I hate to be a conspiracy theorist. But it is almost like they didn't want him alive.

      1. RBS   12 years ago

I pretty much stopped following this story but could the Boston bombers be the "ones who got away?"

  4. John   12 years ago

    Weiner is just a deviant.

    1. Mainer2   12 years ago

      So...Weiner is bent ?

      1. LTC(ret) John   12 years ago

Good to see people can still hit a softball right down the middle.

  5. Bee Tagger   12 years ago

Republicans and Democrats can agree on one thing: they want Republicans to care more about the personal lives of their politicians. They want this for different reasons, but they want it all the same.

  6. Jerryskids   12 years ago

I don't think either scandal is all that much of a scandal - Weiner lied about sending out a pic of a member of Congress, Sanford lied about going off exploring in bush country - what's the big deal?

    1. John   12 years ago

I think sending pictures of your dick to random coeds says bad things about you.

      1. SugarFree   12 years ago

Lying to your aides and disappearing for five days isn't sterling behavior either.

        1. CampingInYourPark   12 years ago

I wonder if the FBI could have manufactured a hacker if some geek wouldn't be sitting in a federal prison right now, or would the Weiner have come clean...so to speak.

          1. SugarFree   12 years ago

I think saying that your Twitter account has been hacked is automatic now, like saying you left your facebook logged on by accident when you get drunk and tell your grandmother to eat a bag of dicks.

Neither of them inspire much confidence, but Weiner is definitely the scummier of the two. Sanford was just a run-of-the-mill affair until the whole disappearing act.

            1. RBS   12 years ago

How long before someone checks into rehab for a social networking "addiction"?

              1. SugarFree   12 years ago

It's going to be in the DSM-V. "Internet disorder."

                1. Slammer   12 years ago

DSM V came out yesterday or the day before. I glanced briefly at the desk reference at work.

            2. CampingInYourPark   12 years ago

"I think saying that your Twitter account has been hacked is automatic now, like saying you left your facebook logged on by accident when you get drunk and tell your grandmother to eat a bag of dicks."

Yeah, you're right, except my 16 year old claiming something like probably wouldn't prompt a federal investigation. Of course, it might be true that the Weiner did decide to tell the truth after realizing the repercussions of the hacking claim.

        2. Mainer2   12 years ago

Sanford fell for an Argentine woman. I can forgive him if he went a little crazy. Did I mention she's Argentine ?

          1. RBS   12 years ago

He didn't just fall for her, she's his "soulmate." I'm not going to excuse lying to his staff or using state money to pay for his trip (even if he pad it back) but it's not like he just out looking for some strange.

      2. Heroic Mulatto   12 years ago

I think sending pictures of your dick to random coeds says bad things about you.

I think it says bad things about his marriage. If Weiner were single, I wouldn't see the big deal (except the dick pic is still a socially inept way of flirting).

        1. John   12 years ago

I think Stanford cheating says bad things about his marriage. Sending unrequested pictures of your dick says you are a pervert.

But in fairness Weiner's wife, while hot, doesn't look like she would be tons of fun in bed.

          1. CampingInYourPark   12 years ago

"But in fairness Weiner's wife, while hot, doesn't look like she would be tons of fun in bed."

Does she wear a chastity belt or is she a non-smoker?

          2. Apatheist ?_??   12 years ago

But in fairness Weiner's wife, while hot, doesn't look like she would be tons of fun in bed.

            Hillary disagrees.

          3. Zeb   12 years ago

I don't really care if a politician is a pervert. In both cases, as far as I am concerned, the lying is the only problem.

      3. Zeb   12 years ago

Were they random? I was under the impression that they were people with whom he had flirty Twitter correspondence with already.

Not going to lie, I dated a fat chick once and the sex was pretty good. Lack of self confidence and fear of rejection really make for a great combination in the sack. Of course, out of the sack this is a recipe for disaster.

          1. sarcasmic   12 years ago

Best bj I ever had was some fat chick who took a detour while driving me home from work one night.

Holy cow. I thought my eyeballs were gonna get sucked back through the sockets.

      2. Heroic Mulatto   12 years ago

It must be noted that she wouldn't be attractive if she were thin. She looks as if her genetic code contains some sort of trisomy, probably Edwards syndrome.

        1. Slammer   12 years ago

Good observation. I thought she kinda had midgety features.

    2. SugarFree   12 years ago

The piggish bitch face is the worst part. Fat and tats are pretty standard, but that face should only be seen looking up from a devastated plate of coconut shrimp.

I knew a guy with a puckered exit wound on his abdomen. He did all right with the ladies, but he was "cute" to begin with.

          2. Tim   12 years ago

You tell them you got it in Baghdad back in '05?

      2. Rich   12 years ago

        LOL.

Reminded me of an ancient SNL skit about a restaurant called The Trough.

        1. Mainer2   12 years ago

Actually, it was the Trough and Brew. Troughs of chili and troughs of beer.

  11. Slammer   12 years ago

Is the media even self aware of how in the tank they are? Or is their bias so built in it's just natural to them and they don't even think about it? I mean, is there intent there? Or are they that oblivious?

    1. HazelMeade   12 years ago

The latter. They are oblivious. It is in the water they drink and swim in.

    2. Bill Dalasio   12 years ago

No, the scary part is that they really do think they're reporting straight, unbiased news. The problem is that, for all the talk of "diversity in the news room", the only thing they seem to be after is demographic diversity. Hence, you get a black lesbian, a straight Asian male and Hispanic woman who all live in a few major metropolitan markets, went to the same schools, studied the same things, talk to the same sources, live in the same neighborhoods, have the same interests, and work with the same set of assignments as "plum".

  12. Tim   12 years ago

Rioting in Sweden by unspecified immigrants.

"It was the third night of unrest, mainly in suburbs where many immigrants live."

    http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_.....oting?lite

    1. SugarFree   12 years ago

After decades of practicing the "Swedish model" of generous welfare benefits, Sweden has been reducing the role of the state since the 1990s, spurring the fastest growth in inequality of any advanced OECD economy.

While average living standards are still among the highest in Europe, governments have failed to substantially reduce long-term youth unemployment and poverty, which have affected immigrant communities worst.

The left-leaning tabloid Aftonbladet said the riots represented a "gigantic failure" of government policies, which had underpinned the rise of ghettos in the suburbs.

      cool story, bro

      1. Mainer2   12 years ago

riots represented a "gigantic failure" of government policies,

Actually, that is true, just not the way the author thinks.

        1. SugarFree   12 years ago

          Bingo.

  13. HazelMeade   12 years ago

The difference between Sanford and Weiner is that Weiner's behavior was totally juvenile - the antics of a frat boy. Whereas Sanford was having a discreet romantic affair, which is totally normal for an adult male.

This is the same thing that went on with Clinton. Clinton gets blow jobs under the Oval office desk from random interns, but somehow this is comparable to having a "mistress".

Democrats just have no class when it comes to sex.
