Elementary School Graduation Canceled Due to Prayer Protest
One parent objected so the abandoned the whole thing
LAKE CITY, AR - The Riverside School district has decided not to have a 6th grade graduation this year after a parent protested against prayer during the ceremony.
Sixth grade parent Kelly Adams said saying a prayer at graduation has never been an issue before which is why a lot of parents are very upset.
"As Christians and a mainly Christian town I think, there were a lot of people hurt that our rights were taken away," Adams said.
"My daughter graduated last year from 6th grade and my son is graduating this year from 6th grade, and we had a pastor open our ceremony and my daughter actually closed the ceremony in prayer," she said.
The school district decided to cancel the graduation ceremony after one parent came out and protested the prayer.

This will always be a problem with public schools. Ignoring the quest of what position is correct, people will always disagree on what should and should not be allowed, from minor details all the way to issues of deeply-held beliefs. This issue cannot be solved in public schools, not without denying some people the sort of schooling they want. Private schools are the future, and charter schools are a step on the way.
The bigger issue is why is there such a thing as graduation from 6th grade.
I totally graduated from bed this morning. I demand a ceremony.
There is nothing to keep these parents from having their own private prayer ceremony right after the graduation. They could even rent the same facility...
