Kickstarted Video Game Console Gets Ready for Debut
Ouya starts shipping to backers; will formally launch in June

A new video game console is about to hit the stores, and it's not produced by Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, the current gorillas dominating the market.
Ouya, a much more modest $99 console, running off Android's operating system, will be hitting the market in June and will be available in stores like Target and Best Buy.
The launch of Ouya will mark the culmination of an interesting experiment. The completion of the console's development and release was paid for via a Kickstarter campaign that drew in $8.5 million in donations. Kickstarter campaigns have been successful in helping fund products and artistic ventures. But as gamers know, the days of a console being just a product are long over. Game consoles also now provide persistent services. Games can be purchased and downloaded via console these days, as can rentals of movies and television shows.
Ouya's challenge will be not just getting the console into gamers' hands, but in being able to continue to operate an online market given its economically modest origins. I wrote about Ouya back in August and the skepticism over whether such a business model could possibly succeed.
Chris Kohler at Wired got his hands on the console in San Francisco just recently. It obviously is not going to be competing with the Xbox or the Playstation for the high-end games, but that's absolutely not the point of the system. Rather, it intends to be an avenue for smaller-game developers to more easily find an audience. Because of the huge boom of indie game development, the success of the system will depend on the ability for creators to use their marketplace and the ease of consumers in connecting to the types of games they'd like. Kohler notes the system Ouya will be using for its marketplace incorporates both an algorithm and human curation:
It's common knowledge in the world of iOS apps that you get noticed in one of two ways: Get featured in the store via Apple's secretive process of internal curation, or (by hook or by crook) get onto the top-grossing or most-downloaded charts.
"We don't think downloads or revenue are good indicators of what a good game is," [Ouya CEO Julie] Uhrman says. To that end, Ouya is crafting its own automatic algorithm that will determine whether or not a game is any good, based on other players' behaviors. How many times have they played it? For how long are they playing it? When a player turns on their Ouya, is it the first game they immediately boot up? All of these factors will influence how prominently games are positioned in the Ouya marketplace when a player clicks on "Discover."
There will also be an element of hand-picked curation on Ouya. That process, Uhrman says, will be led by Kellee Santiago, co-founder Journey creator thatgamecompany and now Ouya's head of developer relations. All new games will go into an area called the "Sandbox," and will be pulled up into the "Recommended" feed after they hit the jackpot on the automated fun algorithm, or are selected by Santiago's team.
There's still plenty of skepticism among gamers that Ouya's business model can actually work (just read the comments under Kohler's story). Portability and simplicity has contributed to the success of mobile phone gaming apps. Do people really want to play such games on their televisions? We will find out beginning in June. For the curious, PC Magazine has a slide show of some games that will be available at launch via Ouya.
Even if Ouya fails, console developers will likely learn a lot about building economic systems that accommodate the ever-changing nature of the gaming marketplace.

Meh. The Oculus Rift is much more interesting to a gamer, than this console.
Real gamers use PC anyway. Consoles are for little kids.(Here comes the pizzing wars, lol).
Fucking neckbeard elitists.
One does not need a neckbeard to be an elitist. I hate neckbeards, and I am most definitely a PC gaming elitist.
Playing an FPS, an RTS, or an MMORPG is a better experience with mouse and keyboard. Other games can be as good or better with a gamepad. I play Arkham City with an XBox Controller plugged into my computer.
Yeah...Consoles are better for fighting, racing, and sports games, PCs are better for just about everything else.
I would add regular RPGs (unless it is a very simple one) and expand RTS to any strategy game.
I agree with Cytotoxic. This must be what madness feels like.
Agreeing with Cyto about anything is to start your descent into madness.
But, look up, weedhopper, Hugh, only Hugh, can prevent florist friars.
Oculus Rift is definitely the more revolutionary and useful project.

I use both. I haven't kept up and hardly game now, though I'm planning on getting back into it after building a new PC, but I still have my old consoles (any older geeks remember Neo-Geo?) If there's any genre that is most suited for the two platforms, it's: PC = FPS, Consoles = Fighters.
The Xbox 720 and PS4 (presumably the more powerful of the two at this point) are basically PCs anyways. The PS4 is quite impressive actually.
I have an Xbox 360 that I rarely use. But I do like Red Dead Redemption on Xbox, since it's not on PC.
If you don't care about graphics, or mods, and you prefer those awful gamepads over a good gaming keyboard and mouse, then consoles are ok.
I can't play the Unreal Tournament series with a gamepad, but I can't play Street Fighter x Tekken with keyboard and mouse either
Yeah, but you can plug a game controller into a PC (or use a wireless one) - most games that could use one in any sane way support it, and those that can't, can do so via keyboard emulation.
You can't keyboard control console games, pretty much ever.
This is why I'm a dedicated PC gamer, where the option exists, which is "everywhere but Nintendo games".
I have a Xbox clone gamepad that I have used for a few games, like Dark Souls, a horrifically bad PC port. But I try to avoid gamepads, I just don't like the feel of them.
PC has Dota2, consoles do not.
PC Consoles. I rest my case.
was supposed to be a greater-than sign in there but reason's sanitization took it out. Squirrels are text cleanfreaks apparently.
< and are part of a tag, that is why it gets removed. Also you play Dota2?
Da, Dota2, game of manly men. I now know how to insult people in Russian and teach graduate level courses in cross-cultural team management and conflict resolution.
A friend of mine asked what the difference between Dota2 and LoL was. My answer: "One is a boy's game, and one is a man's."
Pretty much. Part of the fun is how unforgivable it is. It's entirely possible to screw up your entire game with one bad decision. The victories taste so sweet, and the defeats are rage inducing.
It's the most fun I've had in a game since CS1.6
I also happened to be in front of about 50 LoL cosplayers at PAX east when he asked. Got more than a few dirty looks.
Hmm, never mind, doesn't like " & gt " either
Consoles have Halo and Journey PCs do not.
Also I can play BF3, CoD and Crysis 3 on a much cheaper machine and not have to worry about hacks or being beaten cuz the other guy payed 500$ more on his hardware.
This. PC is good for anything you don't want to play with your friends a la splitscreen. But Halo is funner with friend and I don't care about adding some imperceptible difference to the graphics. And the XBox 360 controller is just more elegant than a keyboard for these kinds of games.
imperceptible difference to the graphics
Lol, the difference is a little more than perceptible.
PCs have upgrade-able video cards. End of story.
This. They have upgradable everything.
They have to be upgradeable cuz everything in a PC is likely to break within 2 years.
PC = expensive piles of shit.
My PCs last a lot longer. Try not buying bargain parts.
(And, well... remember that giant rash of "Red Ring Of Death" on the 360?
Good times. Glad that they eventually fixed that.
Full disclosure: I have a PC I game on. And a Wii. And a X360. And a PS3.
So I'm not just being all defensive about "a bad choice" I made, eh?)
I've never got a red ring of death on my PC that caused me to have to replace the entire thing.
Matter o fact, I have a PC case for my home PC that is now 6 years old and the only thing that I have ever HAD TO replace in it because it broke, was a power supply, one time.
I suggest you buy better quality hardware if you have things regularly failing in 2 years. That is not normal at all, and I've been working in IT for 16 years.
As usual, console gamers are ill informed and don't come to the debate with any real facts.
I suggest you buy better quality hardware
I own a mac. It is six years old and have replaced nothing. I have added some ram.
My xbox from 10 years ago still works and i have had no problems and my PS3 is 3 years old and works fine. both were dirt cheap compared to a gaming PC.
you on the other hand bought "better quality hardware" that broke.
I have plenty of facts apparently you are denying the ones glaring you in your face.
Also i have not met or know anyone who got the red ring of death. Do you? or did you only read about it?
How many people including yourself have had PC failures? The amount of PCs failures i have had over the past 20+ years of owning and using PCs at home, at work and at play are far too numerous to count.
PC are piles of expensive shit when compared to macs, and consoles. You know this i know this the whole world knows this.
All you are doing is defending your $2000 vanity purchase (my guess is you actually suck at games and buy hardware to compensate) just so you can get 20 more fps and 1080p which everyone will be getting anyway on their consoles within 2 years on hardware that is at least $1500 less expensive.
Is this going to become a Mac/PC dick measuring contest?
I know, personally, people who've had catastrophic hardware failure on their xbox, both classic and 360. I know people who have had catastrophic (and difficult/expensive to repair) hardware failure on their Mac. I have personally experienced catastrophic hardware failure on my PC. All of these things come down to personal preference and luck.
Although a Mac guy telling a PC guy that his PC purchase is a vanity purchase was the funniest thing I've read all day.
Is this going to become a Mac/PC dick measuring contest?
Did I not foretell of this, in the beginning?
Oh... wait, it was supposed to be a PC/Console dick swinging contest.
But, it's a moot point, PC always wins.
All you are doing is defending your $2000 vanity purchase
You're grasping here dude. Remember, I own a console. It's just very inferior to my PC. I have around $900 in a very high level gaming PC that smokes the hell out of my Xbox.
You sound jealous, and you keep brining up the cost.
The cost is not what I am debating. Sure, the better system costs more, just like a BMW is more than a Subaru. I'm not sure what your point is.
Not necessarily. Like I said below, my gaming PC I put together at Cyberpower for $725. It has an nVidia GeForce GT 560 Ti in it and can max out on any game's video settings that I've installed. But of course I know exactly what makes for a good game PC and what is completely unnecessary (like liquid cooling systems) so I save costs by only paying for the good parts.
If you're patient, you can accumulate components for a DIY gaming computer as they go on sale on Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, etc. I built mine for about $700 and it was very good for what was available at the time. Still runs Shogun 2 at max settings without breaking a sweat. Cyberpower is a good option too, since you can bypass putting the PC together.
Sorry that between this and my harping on Steam sales in the other thread I sound like everyone's coupon-clipping aunt, but there are some really great ways to make PC gaming more cost-effective than consoles if you're smart about it.
If you're patient, you can accumulate components for a DIY gaming computer as they go on sale on Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, etc.
It's like this.
I am constantly looking for the next upgrade.
In Dec, 2012, I upgraded my board, CPU, and memory.
Next, I want to replace my single video card with dual SLI or Crossfire cards.
You always have new options with PC. With consoles, you are at the mercy of MS, or Sony.
PC also has mouse and keyboard, which are necessary for any games that aren't for wee little babies and girls.
Yeah, I fucking hate console controllers. I can't imagine playing Borderlands with one.
Yah, me too, controllers suck ballz. I'll take my G710+ keyboard and my Rat7 mouse, any day. Lots more accuracy. But if you don't care about accuracy, or graphics, or mods, consoles are ok.
Have fun clicking your enemies to death.
Have fun clicking your enemies to death.
I have fun with it all the time. Do you ever have to click on those 'buttons', or do they click themselves?
But if you don't care about accuracy, or graphics, or mods, consoles are ok.
Xbox is $200 and is 6 years old and plays Crysis 3.
Play Crisis 3 on a 6 year old $200 PC.
By price per gaming power consoles kick ass over PCs by a light year.
And by performance, PCs win.
It's almost like they're simply different value propositions, not "one good, the other bad".
It's almost like they're simply different value propositions, not "one good, the other bad".
Sigivald wins the internet.
They should install key boards and mouses in race cars and jet fighters.
Do race cars and jet fighters have controllers in them? No they have steering wheels and joysticks, both of which are available for PC.
It's not possible to play FIFA with a keyboard and mouse.
It's not possible to play Gran Turismo on a PC.
PCs have Windows 8. End of story.
I have an MSDN subscription and buy all my PCs sans OS. Then I install whichever one I want.
Problem solved.
Which one do you install?
If I had my druthers, I'd install XP- the best and most stable OS MS produced after dos 6.0, but that's getting long in the tooth. It still holds what, 70% of the market, but Microsoft is doing everything it can to marginalize it.
I haven't built my new PC yet because I'm torn. Do I install a 10 year old OS, a six year old one, or merely a five year old one?
That last should have been a two year old one.
I stuck with win2k for a really long time, then held on to XP until 7 came out. Every encounter with Vista is an assault on sanity. I'm vaguely annoyed by 8, but it isn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, especially after I decided that the tile screen or whatever it's called is just an ungainly start menu.
I stuck with win2k for a really long time, then held on to XP until 7 came out. Every encounter with Vista is an assault on sanity.
Yeah, Vista didn't even enter the picture. The only reason windows 8 (Vista II, the Revenge of Vista) enters the picture is I'm not sure how long 7 is going to be supported.
Windows 7 seems fine to me, though I don't think 8 is really worse in any way aside from the start menu change.

When it takes a 25-year computing professional 15 minutes to figure out how to turn it off, we have a problem, Houston.
When it takes a 25-year computing professional 15 minutes to figure out how to turn it off
I freaked out on that for a second and then alt-f4'd to the old shutdown menu. It annoys me every time I go to shut down, and I still end up using alt-f4
As a rare person who actually uses Windows without a mouse, I'm not sure if the alt-f4 works from every screen, especially the Windows Smartphone-on-your-PC-for-no-good-reason screen.
But I've only played with it on a PC once. I was so horrified, I never went back.
No, it doesn't work from the tile screen (still not sure what it's called), but I operate in desktop mode almost exclusively anyway.
Do I install a 10 year old OS, a six year old one, or merely a five year old one?
Windows 7
I upgrade whenever work gets the license to pay for the new OS. Right now, windows 7 is free, and it's fine. When Windows 8 is free, I will install it.
Dude windows 8 it sooo old...hell i got windows 98 years ago.
OH yeah, I used windows 1, whippersnapper.
This thing is a fucking joke and the biggest indicator that the tech industry is in a massive bubble.
What does "the tech industry" have to do with this?
The real tech industry makes competitive products.
This is fan-supported wankery.
It's going to fail, and hard, but it's no reflection on "the industry" - "the industry" also knows it's going to fail.
Agree. Myself, I don't care if it fails or not, because I don't care about the low end gaming market. iPad is fine for cheap games. It has a screen that I can actually see and has decent games for $6. I am looking now for a good Android tablet with a 10" screen or bigger, because I really hate all Apple OS. The new ASUS tablets look like a good deal.
I'm also skeptical. Since it uses mobile chips that changes constantly, Ouya is planning on refreshing the hardware every year to keep up with gaming power. I'm not sure that's a good thing. Nevertheless it'll always be less powerful than the latest gen consoles, not to mention PCs.
It seems to target casual gamers, but like Scott mentioned, there's already the mobile market for that. There are game controller attachments for phones, and you can already output via hdmi to your TV.
Ouya is planning on refreshing the hardware every year to keep up with gaming power
Not if you want to squeeze every last dime you can from the consumers of consoles, like Sony and Microsoft do. 5-7 years is like decades in hardware terms.
There are some decent games out for iPad. I have one named Ravensword that I play when traveling, that is pretty decent. It's not Skyrim of course, but it's probably as good as anything you will see on this console.
I don't know how anyone can see a game on even a 5" phone screen. I guess I am getting old.
, like Sony and Microsoft do. 5-7 years is like decades in hardware terms.
This is not an unqualified downside.
The PS3 and Xbox hold up remarkably well with their lifespan. Some consumers (raises hand, and is a PC gamer) see this as a benefit. I'm not forced at gunpoint to buy new hardware every 18 months to keep up.
Plus it's been proven that a good starting platform will perform well over years with clever, efficient software design.
Plus, now that High definition is something everyone is used to, I think there's going to be a slowdown in video quality and performance. When you can get a very realistic experience from a 7 year-old console running in 720p, gamers are now looking to game mechanics more than ever.
Sure your game is dazzling and beautiful, but it's boring and derivative.
Consider the almost bizarre success of MineCraft. A game purposely made to look old school with bigblock graphics has been a worldwide phenomenon.
This is an intersting experiment. Pissing matches between console and pcs aside (looking at you, Hyperion), the Ouya is not really a direct console/gaming rig competitor. It's essentially got the power of your average (decent, maybe top tier?) smart phone with the ability to hook it up to a big screen TV and have console-style wireless controllers.
I think they took the right path by keeping the architecture open. I don't see myself buying one of these because even being long in the tooth, the PS3 and XBOX are considerably more powerful that the Ouya. And as Hyperion alludes to, PCs are immensly powerful and allow for games that consoles still don't do well, such as interface-rich MMOs. So really everything on this box banks on its low price point and accessibility.
So really everything on this box banks on its low price point and accessibility.
Sure, I get it. We are really comparing apples to oranges. If you want to spend the money, PC is the way to go. Consoles are much cheaper, but you give up mods and graphics power, plus you are stuck with controllers.
And for the lower end of consumers, you have this new console. I'm not really putting it down, it has it's own market and that's good.
But for me, VR is what is interesting. The Oculus, maybe combined with something like leap motion, is the future of gaming. I thought about buying one of the developer units, but I don't have time to devote to that, so I will just wait for the consumer unit to be released.
Honestly not sure I will ever buy a console again. Nearly every game is available on Steam within a month or so of its release on consoles, and often cheaper at that. I know Valve was talking about releasing a "Steam Box" console, but I don't see the point. My guess is as server power increases and price decreases more companies will abandon consoles and just stream their games.
We're still a long way off from having a pipe to each person's home big enough to fully stream a high def game.
We have the computing power, just not the bandwidth yet.
It's the latency that kills remote/cloud gaming, and the requirement for high, constant bandwidth to stream 1080p output just exacerbates that. RPGs and casual games would be alright, but most action games are would not, especially competitive multiplayer games that are more sensitive to real time input and feedback.
Before they went under OnLive was delivering HD gaming with latency under 100ms. What killed them was the cost of the servers, not really bandwidth issues.
If it's something like 90ms, that's still not good enough for competitive action multiplayer games. You can fudge single player games. Didn't they only stream in 720p anyways? I've also read about not so good experiences with OnLive related to that, though it could've been due to the person's ISP as well
720p i think was the max. And 90ms was fine for most of the games they offered.
Yeah, you still have to have local hardware producing the output. So, you're still going to be buying a PC or a console.
And consumers (I'm happy to find) are still skeptical of needing to be online to game. SimCity?
I see your SimCity and raise you any game from Ubisoft on PC.
SimCity sold 1.1 million copies in two weeks. We'll see if players stick around for the log haul like they did with SimCity 4.
And apparently SimCity received 3.3 million complaints and demands for a refund.
And as an old school sim city playah, I was disappoint.
Did you actually play it?
I originally vowed never to sully my HD with it. But as the time to purchase a new machine grows near I find myself wavering.
Is it as terrible as I fear? Would I be better off with a Windows partition and CitiesXL?
Did you actually play it?
No... but in the violent aftermath of its release, I heard of that Cities XL game which has me intrigued.
I may just go with Cities XL.
CitiesXL is, sadly, buggy as crap.
(Or at least it was when it came out and I tried it.
I haven't heard of useful improvement since then...)
What version did you play? 2011 or 2012?
Because it looks so good, and the old SimCity forum I was on seemed to agree that it was a good replacement.
CitiesXL is, sadly, buggy as crap.
Which is the the roar coming from the crowd playing the latest SimCity. Is it worse?
RPGs and casual games would be alright, but most action games are would not
Keep in mind, the best RPGs are also action games, Skyrim, FNV, Borderlands, etc...
Skyrim is not really an action game. Go to any Skyrim forum and read thread after thread after thread from action game players hating on Skyrim. You would almost think it was the worst game ever made from the way they carry on.
Number one complaint: "Aaargh, it takes too long to level up! Why are they making me grind to be godlike?"
Number two complaing: "Aaargh! What kind of boss is Alduin?!?! I've seen better bosses in Galaga!"
Actually, Skyrim IS an action RPG. Not sure why anyone would say that it isn't.
Must be a bunch of real gaming wussies to say that Skyrim is a difficult game. They should try playing any of the Gothic series, in which it is much more difficult and time consuming to level up.
They're not saying it's difficult, they saying it takes too long to get to the level cap. Now that the level cap is gone, they'll say it takes to long to get to level 500.
Can you get porn on a console?
If you cannot, then it loses.
Yes.
You can, but it still loses.
Do Japanese dating games count?
No. You can get pr0n, from pr0b sites. Both consoles have built-in browsers.
Wait, what Japanese dating games are you playing on a console?
Frontal Fantasy 69.
I'm at work for a while longer. PLEASE tell me that's a real thing.
In my mind it's a real thing.
All of the current games projected on a flat screen will pale in comparison to the next round of games on Google Glasses and equivalent heads-up devices.
I disagree. I think the appeal for Google Glasses will be a niche appeal for the time being.
But I'll entertain the counter argument, what's the resolution of Google Glasses?
Because what I totally want is a game projected over my house, right?
I have seen a few games for smart phones i would have liked to play on a big screen with a controller rather then a touch pad...
Also those games tend to be pretty damn cheap compared to premium console and PC games.
Computers are for work and pr0n. Consoles are for gaming. Whenever someone says that PC gaming [greaterthan] Console, I just assume they need shower.
Computers are for work and pr0n.
Meh... my last computer died, two years ago? And I haven't gotten around to replacing it because I use my smartphone for everything now. So the only thing I miss my PC for is gaming. But I now have a PS3 which fills that gap extremely well.
I keep promising myself I'll get a new pc, but I just... can't... get around to it.
On the pr0n front, my Samsung Galaxy actually integrates with my Samsung Smart TV. Bring up a pr0n video on the phone (High def) hit 'transfer' and voila! Pr0n in high def to my 46" flat screen, straight from the phone.
I keep promising myself I'll get a new pc, but I just... can't... get around to it.
Newegg, build it yourself, it's not difficult at all. Save lots of $$$
I always build my own pc. Even airbrushed my last PCs case. It was dope.
Pink wizards and hispanic chicks with huge knockers?
Not even close. It was pink hispanic wizards with huge knockers.
Ok, ok, here it is:
http://www.christineboltz.com/.....cars04.jpg
Killer.
It was between that and a life-like portrait of Marilyn Monroe, I went with Wayne Newton.
Nobody would say you made the wrong choice.
Actually, you can get it built for you from here for basically the same price as buying on Newegg. I have plenty of money; I'm not going through the hassle of building my boxes any more.
My gaming PC is seriously jacked, and I customized it to get rid of all the bullshit hardware that jacks up the price, and ended up paying $725. With free shipping. And every game I have I can max out its graphics settings and the thing doesn't even breathe hard.
That's pretty cool, Epi. I'll check them out.
I do actually enjoy the process of building the PC, but I haven't done it in years, so I'm out of the hardware research game.
Part compatibility is the real bitch, and Cyperpower does all that for you. Make sure when you choose one to customize, you pick one with free shipping. Then customize the shit out of it, dropping all the useless shit like extra fans and stupid LED cases down to the cheapest option, and then see what you want to go up to for the important parts.
Now, granted, I kept going back to the site and customizing for weeks before I got what I considered an excellent enough deal, but it paid off.
Oh, and if you're willing to go with a mediocre video card, you can really get that price down.
Paul, that's what youtube is for. You won't have any problems.
Youtube videos on PC parts? Bringing it back to neckbeards.
Neckbeards are a great way to signal that you're not interested in the company of other human beings Pantsfan. I'm sure they're intentional.
Neckbeards are a great way to signal that you're not interested in the company of other human beings Pantsfan. I'm sure they're intentional.
Yeah, this and the fact that they have nothing to do with a PC/Console pissing contest, which is always sure to ensue every time that anyone mentions that PC is the superior gaming platform, even though no one on the PC side ever argues that it's cheaper or easier to maintain.
Umm, you can actually watch a youtube vid, if you have any lack of understanding how to build your PC from your chosen components.
There will always be a geek who can't wait to post their PC building prowess online for their most recent system build.
Neckbeards are optional.
I get it. Consoles are easy. Consoles are cheaper. What they are not, is the best for gaming.
Computers are for work and pr0n. Consoles are for gaming
Apparently, you don't own a PC that is worthy of gaming on. A good gaming PC is far superior to any console for gaming. I own both, so I am speaking from experience here.
Actually I'm a Mac user. Only fools try to play anything beyond RTS on Macz.
Actually I'm a Mac user.
I knew it.
Sad but true.
I love my Macs, but my gaming PC is ... a PC.
Because while my 27" iMac has more than enough CPU and ram to handle any game I could throw at it, the graphics card is purely mediocre compared to the 3MP display. (Turns out more pixels is more work, who knew?)
Combined with the lesser game availability on OSX, Macs are useless for enthusiasts.
Actually I'm a woman
ftfy.
Real gamers play standing up with a joystick and 4 or 6 buttons.
I could care less if a game is high end or low end. I care about the playability, and I care about it being a game I enjoy. I love Bethesda's style of open world games, but I could really care less if it's Bethesda producing them. Give me something similar by an independent and I'll snap it up. Unfortunately that style of game is very rare and most hardcore gamers hate them, so I am not holding out hope that the Ouya will be providing any.
Unfortunately that style of game is very rare and most hardcore gamers hate them,
I don't understand this statement. It's precisely the open-world style game that hardcore gamers want.
It's the angry birds crowd (looking at Hugh Akston) that avoids them.
Whoa bitch. Them's fightin' words!
Sure I have Angry Birds. But I am also like six months into an epic game of Oblivion. I have beaten Fallouts 1 through NV.
I would forsake all other games for a good high-def moddable version of SimCity.
So you're like Nondrick in real life?
Sorry, you said you were a Mac User, what was I supposed to think?
Next thing you're going to tell me is that you drive a Prius and are able to keep it from drifting out of your lane for more than a hundred yards.
Haha nope, I drive a Volt almost all the way to work.
So you're the one.
I am not a hardcore gamer, so I only know them by what they complain about on various forums. To take Skyrim as an example, they consider the combat system to be lame, the find the non-linearity to be confusing, they finish the main questline over a weekend and ask "is that all there is?", they constantly ridicule the graphics, etc., etc.
I've seen the same complaints for Oblivion and Morrowind. FO3 was not as bad because it had more action elements to it, but they still vastly prefer the linear FNV to open FO3. There really aren't any other open world RPGs out there that I am aware of.

That aren't MMOs, you surely mean.
I also play LoTRO, and if it is indicative of MMOs, then no, they're not. Quests are strictly level based and most linear. Sometimes I do get choices but by and large the game directs what I do and where I go.
In Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout3, I can randomly spin a compass and then go walking in that direction, and adventure will find me. In LoTRO if I do the same I will most likely find an invisible wall/cliff or a zone that is way above (or below) my level.
Perhaps we just mean different things by the term "open world RPG".
The mechanics of skyrim are essentially the same, though (I haven't yet played Skyrim). It's as open as say, World of Warcraft. I can go in any direction and either take a quest offered by someone or fight whatever I find out in the world, and on PVP servers get in battles with other players.
Even on the console there was Red Dead redemption which was considered pretty damned open-world.
Yeah, Red Dead is an open world like I am thinking of. Never played WoW due to the WoW factor. Perhaps LoTRO is just more linear than most MMOs.

Dragon's Dogma...but the map/area difficulty is set up to as to make the game more linear then Skyrim.
Dark Souls too. Though be prepared to get your face raped off if you stray into some areas too early.
one thing i would like to see is a open world with the map that is procedurally generated from a random seed.
It would generate kingdoms and towns and monster areas, dungeons etc. but with no set story line...or story lines that are also randomly generated and contained so as not to be the "theme" of the whole damn game.
Then just allow you to play in your own random sand box...destroy kingdoms or rise to rule an empire...perhaps even let people set up multi-player servers with persistent maps and mods like with minecraft or Dayz
That'll be awesome, but there will end up being a lot of terrible versions of them before they make one that works. Also the quests/story lines would have to be pretty stock and you'd probably have too eschew voice acting until our generated 1/8th phoneme tech gets really good.
The reticulating splines screen would also be quite cumbersome, and save files massive.
Daggerfall was sort of like that. Never played it, but heard that it got boring real fast. Oblivion had random dungeons, and I can attest that after the first five they all started looking the same.
Very rare?
Well, apart from all the ones Bethesda puts out (admittedly a disproportionate number!), it's not like Sandboxes are a dying breed or VERY rare.
(They're not the most common, if only because to do one right is a staggering amount of work!)
Rockstar puts them out, in their own annoying way.
And then there's "GTA done right" in the form of Saints Row.
There should be a new Just Cause coming out sometime soonish, too...
What's wrong with GTA?
Also, if you want "GTA done right" -- Mercenaries for PS2 was the hotness.
Mercenaries was a blast. Too bad the sequel was terrible.

I'm surprised by the number of open world action RPG fans that have never played the Gothic series of games, including Risen. I consider them the ultimate open world gaming experience to date. Not to take anything away from Fallout and FNV, which are both great games.

I heard the latest Saints Row was an abomination.

Red Dead redemption is a damn fun game.
so I am not holding out hope that the Ouya will be providing any.
Minecraft should be playable on the Ouya at launch.
Of course that might be too open world for you.
Am actually interested in Minecraft. Am adding a plus next to Ouya.

Snap!
EVO 2012 SSF4 AE 2012 Infiltration vs Dieminion
It's a whole other world ....
If people are able to install anything from Google Play, you can possibly turn this thing into a multi-console emulation machine
However, I don't see why I couldn't just use the mini-HDMI output on my Android phone and use a bluetooth controller
You can play your console games on giant HD tvs (although I'm sure you can connect your PC to a tv screen, it's hassle for me.
Wii is a bit a gimmick, but it enables family / group activities. Something you can't really do on a PC.
PC games do have nice graphics.
Okay Hype you may be (certainly are) a neckbearded PC elitist but at least you aren't an AppleFag. So there's that.
Do computer screens have any advantage over HD TV screens?
They're smaller, thereby making defects are harder to see?
Better resolution? Still, after a couple of generations of Oculus Rift technology, maybe no one will give a shit about either sort of screen.
Pretty cool video game if I say so myself. Wow.

I really do need to get my new PC. I'm still on the one I built in 2006. I'm just too lazy to do it right now, and I have no idea what level of hardware I'd really need now...
Last I checked you couldn't play Crusader Kings 2 or Total War on an XB or PS3. I use my PS3 for BluRay and streaming. That's it anymore.
Matt Lewis finds he's simpatico with so-cons. I knew it.
Wrong thread. I blame tabulated browsing.
The Steambox is gonna own everything. Except my PC, of course, but that's always gonna be a niche thing.
It obviously is not going to be competing with the Xbox or the Playstation for the high-end games, but that's absolutely not the point of the system.
You guys are getting old if you are arguing PC vs. console and the sorts of games they play. Try visiting Kongregate or Armorgames to get an idea of what I think they are selling here. Kids these days play on the smartphones, they want 'potato chip' games - quick, easy, simple, cheap games. I think this thing is going to be huge.
Of course, I'll be the old guy over here playing Arcanum again.

Well, the obvious question is, why did we raise a bunch of faggots?
Unless you've played Doom on a PC where you had to load from a DoS prompt, you have no right to comment on gaming whatsoever. No exceptions.
That said, consoles are for pussies. Men play with a keyboard and mouse. Enjoy holding those cock stand-ins in your hands, ladies.
Many different types of video gaming consoles are available in the market which gamers loves to use for playing games. New gaming consoles will come with latest and great gaming features for making gamers gaming experience more better and enjoyable.
Where is the Gaming Steering Wheel? Its like a soul to my PS4 and Xbox. A good gaming steering wheel can give you 10 times more fun in a game. I am a big fan of racing games. NFS that's dope. and the Steering wheel is one such thing which I never wanted to miss.
