Yes, Health Insurance Premiums Will Rise Under ObamaCare

For several months now, health insurers have been warning rather loudly that ObamaCare would cause health premiums to rise sharply for many Americans. Given how much of the health insurance industry's business is tied up in ObamaCare, it was always possible that they were publicly exageratting the effects in order to win influence with the administration.
But a report today from The Wall Street Journal suggests that insurers are saying much the same thing privately:
Health insurers are privately warning brokers that premiums for many individuals and small businesses could increase sharply next year because of the health-care overhaul law, with the nation's biggest firm projecting that rates could more than double for some consumers buying their own plans.
The projections, made in sessions with brokers and agents, provide some of the most concrete evidence yet of how much insurance companies might increase prices when major provisions of the law kick in next year—a subject of rigorous debate.
The projected increases are at odds with what the Obama Administration says consumers should be expecting overall in terms of cost.
Large employers are likely to be affected the least by the law. Instead, the biggest hikes are likely to hit individuals and small businesses. And in some cases, premiums will be quite a bit higher after the law's major provisions kick in. The Journal reports that a Blue Cross & Blue Shield representative told North Carolina insurance brokers last week that individual premiums could rise by 40 to 50 percent next year.

I am watching basketball today. So fuck those DC assholes and Obamacare. I don't even care anymore.
and so it begins....
Go Albany! Beat Duke!
If Duke loses to another 15 seed, it will be hilarious.
I can't care too much about the tournament this year since the Wildcats aren't going to do that well.
Here's hoping JMU delivers an upset and makes things interesting!
UHG! Can Reason just open up a full-time sports thread to spare the straights all the sports references?
Sometimes I miss White Indian.
And now for some scores!
78 to 35!
63 to 40!
In an upset, 53 to 39!
And a close one at 76 to 73!
We had winners in all games!
Feel free to gambol about the thread.
Sports is a construct developed by the city-state designed to prevent the good and just paleo-hunter-gatherer from gamboling as he chooses.
Well played.
What you did there...
...I am seeing it.
Looks like someone's bracket is already in the shitter.
Well, if health insurance costs rise too much, Congress can just pass laws to say they can't do that.
DUH! Problem solved.
NEXT!
Take one aspirin and call me in the morning.
An aspirin? That'll be 3 bucks. 7 for name brand.
I think Nick took up the task of budget critiquing, so how about a post on the budget RP unveiled today?
I'd love to see an insurance company take bitcoins.
Alright, so we keep hearing how this is going to be shitty and bone people with higher costs of care.
Are there any ways around this? No, I don't mean legislatively, I mean by changing the way we seek health care once this monstrosity grows out of control.
Thinking along the lines of the article on direct primary care on reason recently... They say it's part of a larger movement. What is this movement, and how do we access it?
I'm talking to my doc right now about cash money for medical care. He don't like BamsterCare, I don't like BamsterCare - let's talk...
Why? You're forced to buy insurance. Are you going to pay the premiums and then not use it?
There are a very few doctors and facilities that operate strictly cash, no insurance, no Medicare, no Medicaid.
Unfortunately, collectivizing the cost of thir-party payment dries up the savings I could have used to pay them.
I'm not sure how we get out of this thing without legislative change, since the law essentially colonizes the entire health care finance system, including, indirectly, personal savings for a cash-only alternative.
Maybe a high deductible plan backed up by access to cash doctors for minor issues. Thing is, how does one find these doctors?
In Mexico.
How does one find a high deductible plan? My company doesn't offer one.
I have one. It's individual coverage. I chose to forgo the benefit because overall it was cheaper. But my premium just went up 32%, so I'm thinking about switching back to the employer coverage because it's not high deductible, but it's also not that much more in cost.
If the procedure is cheap enough that I can afford to pay for it in cash, I really won't give a shit one way or another. Sadly, the procedures I care about and might need to stay alive won't be so cheap. That is why I have insurance. That whole risk and cost uncertainty thing you know.
I'd like to see doctors take the Hippocratic oath seriously when treating politicians. Does curing this person cause harm?
Are there any ways around this?
A smoking crater, situated in between Virginia and Maryland?
"Are there any ways around this? No, I don't mean legislatively, I mean by changing the way we seek health care once this monstrosity grows out of control."
Man-up and die, people. Man-up and die.
I have health insurance through work. It's the catastrophic kind. Used it once 7-years ago to get four stitches in my hand. That's it. My healthcare philosophy is this: If I need stitches, I get them. If I break a leg, I have it set. If I am diagnosed with a brain tumor, I receive palliative care at home. People who cling to an expensive, shitty life are selfish fools.
Man-up and die, people. Man-up and die.
Don't we get a handful of pain pills to make our passing easier?
Nope. You might abuse them and enjoy yourself.
Aside from mandatory health screenings for work and breaking a few limbs as a child, I've been to the doctor exactly once, which was when I needed to have something removed from my chest. So I'm right there with you.
I'm more concerned because I'm coming off of my current health plan in a few years, right around the time when this junk starts to really kick into gear. If there is a cheap way to get around this and still have access to real urgent medical care I'd be all over it.
How will this square with the penaltax? Insurers already worry that the fee won't induce compliance, so will the penaltax need to scale more drastically as insurance costs rise?
shhhhhhh
If premiums rise enough the penaltax would be the only way to get affordable care (in this country). Interesting world, this.
So, backdoor single-payer with only the vestiges of a two-tier system. How long do you give before those still buying market insurance are described as "bitter clingers"?
If the health insurance corporations didn't waste precious resources on profits for rich people, health insurance would be free!
Government doesn't waste resources on profits, thus they do everything more cheaply than corporations!
Single payer now!
/DERP
I find I like you more everyday.
I a purely platonic non prison movie kinda manly way.
In
They've been inching their way towards single-payer for years, but us heathens keep resisting. Do you think the next step will be straight to single-payer or will there have to be another intermediate cock-up first?
I think it will take several more cock-ups.
Well maybe we can hold out against single-payer until after I die, then. These things only come around once a generation or so...

I am shaking with rage right now. Fuck these entitled pieces of shit.
THEY RUIN THE FUCKING COUNTRY, and then they complain about their FUCKING STAFFING ALLOWANCE?
Fuck tar and feathers. I want guillotines and severed heads mounted on fucking pikes.
What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure.
I mean for fuck's sake. She is complaining about having to cut payroll.
WELCOME TO THE PARTY YOU WORTHLESS CUNT.
I almost got in a fight last night, because this guy was bitching and complaining about being fired. He worked for a small contracting company. He was one of the dozen they fired to get under that 50 employee threshold. So I told him about my own recent Obamacare related annoyances, and he goes "Well, they could have paid me health insurance, but they decided to fire me instead. That's just greed, Obama is against greed and blah blah"
So I go off on him, telling him what a fucking idiot he is (in a nice, rational way) and he gets in my face and some people pulled us apart.
Seriously though, fuck these people. They do everything they can to destroy wealth, and then they complain there isn't enough left to loot. Give me an honest feudal lord any day.
As long as there are rich people, then the rich people have not paid their fair share. How could they have? They're rich.
If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people, under the pretence of taking care of them, they must become happy.
You're within the retard horizon of DC. You should know better than to expect the normal laws of human intelligence to operate there.
No rational thought, not even that of light, can escape it's grip of venal and craven stupidity.
Jim Moran might be the worst politician in the house. He's like a Ted Kennedy/Joe Biden love child. He constantly has his foot in his mouth and he constantly gets re-elected. Fucking 8th District. Get your shit together!
It just keeps getting better and better.
Soon, we'll pay twice or three times as much, just so we can have absolutely no health insurance at all.
No, no stalking horse for socialized medicine, at all. No fucking way.
I recently saw a news article which I am not going to make the slightest effort to produce; apparently, somebody is rolling up Blue Cross insurance providers, and is attempting to purchase Blue Cross of Montana. The State of Montana as represented by the Atty Genl and Governor contrived to double the purchase price.
Did they believe this would result in lower premiums?
Apparently the Insurance Commissioner has not yet approved the deal.
"'If it's a $100,000 reduction in your [allowance] you really need to start preparing for a staff change,' said Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. 'That's a whole person!'"
Or about 1/5 the cost of a night in London for Joe Biden:

Get a brain!
I can see more cash for services clinics popping up, enough that the Feds will have to make them illegal.
Unaffordable is the New Affordable.
From Virgini9an's link:
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., said Congress has had to reduce constituent services because of the sequester. "We're really starting to see the effects of that in our office," she said.
The cuts have also affected the quality of life for congressional aides, said Wasserman Schultz, whose defense of Capitol Hill staffers amid budget cuts has won her unofficial den mother status among many. At the hearing, for example, she said prices of meals in House restaurants are getting so high that aides are being "priced out" of a good meal.
And, she added, the cuts demanded by House leaders over the past three years have lessened the attractiveness of Hill jobs. "The more we rob Peter to pay Paul," she said, "the tougher it is for us to compete not only with the private sector but with other federal agencies."
Holy shit. How can anybody come within arm's length of this woman without strangling her?
she's able to box them out.
You'll be turned to stone, long before you get within stranglin' range.
How the hell does a hill staffer job compete with a private sector job?
If tolerance is defined as being intolerant of anyone who disagrees with you, and inclusive is defined as excluding anyone who disagrees with you, why can't affordable mean forcing people to pay more?
"$100k is one employee!"
But WE are the ones out of touch with reality.
Seriously. I have a lot of friends who work on Capitol Hill, or for political organs of one kind or another. Every so often, I have to take them down a peg by pointing out they're all overpaid parasites and they should be grateful the mob hasn't stormed the Bastille.
Debbie the Cunt thinks that 100,000 is a perfectly modest and reasonable salary for a "job" that anyone on here could do with their eyes closed.
That is because you don't understand. Debbie can't employ the idiot sons and daughters of her big donors for less than 100K and keep them happy.
I wonder if we are rapidly approaching our own Bastille Day event.
"I wonder if we are rapidly approaching our own Bastille Day event."
Well wonder no more. Why do you think they want your guns. Why do you think the feds are buying up all of the ammo?
I am regretting the decision to buy a .40 caliber pistol. Sould have bought one in a less popular ammo category.
When people's heath insurance rates double, we may get close. The liberals have in the past done things that either benefited the middle class, hurt them in ways that were not obvious, or were bi partisan and could be blamed on the other side. Obamacare is none of that. They own it and it is going to kill the middle class in a way that everyone will see.
It is going to get ugly in 2014. I have no idea how ugly it is going to get or what will emerge from it. But things are going to get ugly. Even low information low IQ Obama voters are going to notice this and they are going to be pissed.
Oh come on. The narrative is so obvious. GREED! CORPARASHUNZ!
Those sycophants won't for one nanosecond admit that mandates = costs.
Yeah, but just try buying a good meal while forced to work for $100K. You'll be reduced to fighting with the pigeons over bagel scraps in the street.
And apparently, someone making $100,000 can't afford "a good meal" at the cafeteria. I make a third of that, and I somehow get by in NYC.
Debbie the Cunt thinks that 100,000 is a perfectly modest and reasonable salary for a "job" that anyone on here could do with their eyes closed.
It's such a pittance we shouldn't expect the poor little overworked darlings to pay actual market value for their fucking lunches.
" Debbie the Cunt "
That's Assistant Deputy Director Cunt to you missy.
