Barry Gardiner, a Labour member of the environment select committee, criticised the Food Standards Agency for only beginning its programme of DNA testing last week.
He said: "It is almost like they are politicians, they say nothing. They don't seem to have any real grip on what's going on or control of the situation, there is a real sense of a vacuum.
