Obama's Economic Stagnation
Despite constant assurances that America is "poised for growth," all evidence points to an economy that's going nowhere.
So, U.S. consumer confidence unexpectedly plunged in January to its lowest level in more than a year. The U.S. economy unexpectedly posted a contraction in the fourth quarter of 2012—for the first time since the recession—"defying" expectations that economic growth is in our future.
If the economy were as vibrant as President Barack Obama has told us it is, a belt tightening in a single sector of government surely wouldn't be enough to bring about "negative growth." But one did. Unexpectedly. No worries, though. Pundits on the left tell us that this contraction was good news—possibly the best contraction in the history of all contractions. The White House blamed Republicans and, I kid you not, corporate jet owners because—well, who else? But mostly, the left is bellyaching about the end of temporary military spending and a brutal austerity that's enveloped a once great nation.
There's a small problem with that argument. There is no austerity. In the fourth quarter of 2012, Washington spent $908 billion, which was $30 billion more than it spent in the last quarter of 2011 and nearly $100 billion more than it spent in the third quarter of 2012. Taxpayers took on another $400 billion in debt during the quarter. If this is poverty, can you imagine what robust spending looks like?
If we took the argument at face value, though, it means this: The left is contending that George W. Bush's wars have been propping up the economy for years. They believe that spending, no matter where we "invest," is tantamount to economic growth—that trillions in deficit spending ostensibly meant to "stimulate" the economy is really meant to artificially inflate the gross domestic product. If this were true, the only question we should have is: Why don't we spend five times as much and grow the economy fivefold?
Meanwhile, on Earth, the economy has averaged 150,000 new jobs a month for the past two years—even with the Federal Reserve pumping in tens of billions every week—barely enough to keep up with new entries into the labor force, much less the exodus from it. The unemployment rate has hovered around 8 percent for a year. The only thing growing is Obama's popularity. And really, isn't that the most vital thing for America?
White House spokesman Jay Carney says that "we continue to be poised for positive economic growth and job creation." Poised? Yes, we're always poised. Something, someone, may be getting in the way. With the payroll tax holiday expiring and new taxes on the way (via the fiscal cliff deal and the institution of Obamacare), it seems unlikely the next few quarters will feature impressive growth.
We can measure the failure by using benchmarks set by not Rush Limbaugh or Fox News but the administration. In 2009, the White House projected that GDP growth would average 4.6 percent in 2012. The next year, the White House projected that growth would reach 4.3 percent on average last year. In 2011, it downgraded to an average of 3.6 percent. Wrong again. Last year's growth was actually 2.2 percent. And that number was achieved by injecting billions in monthly debt for an array of liberal hobbyhorses.
The GDP numbers may still be revised. But if we weren't waist-high in the worst recovery since the 1800s, none of this would matter. We'd be discussing 4 or 5 percent quarterly growth rather than 1 or 2 percent, whether we cut some military spending or not. Today stagnation is the normal—and totally expected.

Double dip!
The only numbers that matter:
(1) Sunday's final score
(2) The number of times the cameras of CBS focus on the Harbaugh parents
(3) The number of references to deer antlers and their mysterious restorative properties
(4) The number of times I will have picked fights with Patriots fans who hate Ray Lewis

Oh yeah, that World Series thinggy is this weekend, isn't it.
Y'all have fun watchin' the foosball.
Hey Francisco, did you know that Football is what the rest of the world calls Soccer?
Soccer? Is that the one with the hoop or the clubs?
It's the one with all the white guys: Non-skate division.
Oh, there are plenty of black guys, too. And you often know when they're on the field in Europe because the tolerant progressive socialists shout racist chants at them.
Europe is sooooooooo refined.
Personally, I call it metric football.
+10 internetz
Get it? 10
I made it funny.
Right?
Um, sure.
Ray Lewis is a piece of garbage who has now gotten away with killing a man and cheating his profession.

I say this as a lifelong Pats fan: Those guys friggin annoy the hell out of me.
I have to deal with that shit from my brother all the time "Oh Ray Lewis is a murderer". Friggin deal with it, they beat us fair and square and I'm sorry even completely ignoring the fact that Ray Lewis did not kill anyone, did come clean and testafy against his buddies who did and the reality that the two dead guys were thugs who started the fight to begin with one has to admire the way Ray has turned his life around from that point. 9 out of 10 young Football players who get involved in scenes like that end up like rae Carruth or Pac Man Jones, not as high character first ballot hall of famers.
This. It's a miracle that someone with Ray Lewis' background isn't dead or incarcerated right now rather than a legendary NFL player and family man.
Thank you. You have made my day.
Ray Lewis has also demonstrated the power of forgiveness. His father was not part of his life growing up as his dad abandoned him. Yet, Ray has accepted his father's apologies and has made him a part of his life. Its the type of stuff that gives me goose bumps.
My post was initially directed towards Rasilio. I see that A Serious Man also has it right.
1. SF (the football team, not the commenter) 24 - Ray Rays 17
2. 22
3. 1
4. 4 (but one will be a real doozy)
Since the Emperor can't (yet) serve more than two terms, he won't be able to match FDR's span of damaging the economy. But he can yet match the depth; just give him a couple of more Dems in congress.
With any luck, Biden will win a term in 2016 so he can drop an A-bomb and finally bring this economy to an end.
You mean he's going to use the word asshole on television?
Biden/Jindal debates 2016: Look asshole, I don't know what kind of 7-11 your parents run, but in Scranton folks like us...
It's gonna be a big fuckin' deal.
That would be a big fucking deal.
PWND
In additional news, the unemployment rate went up.
And yet, according to 99% of the news media, It's all just a blip. Nothing to see here. Move along.
Obviously people are turning down job offers because they are racists.
LOL, white men are unable to check their privilege and accept that a black man saved the economy so they are deliberate tanking things.
Quite so - I am hoping our short term incentive plan is really low this year, so I can be mad about that darned mooslimb Kenyan usurper...who cares how much a bad economy hurts me!
/troll vision of libertarian off
Its amazing. The economy contracts, albeit slightly, and every news outlet and mainstream pundit claims it is good news.
They aren't even selling the UE news as a blip, they are claiming it is a positive.
Is it any wonder that this dismal failure incredibly managed to get relected?
If we had a real media in this country that actually scrutinized this president instead of deifying him, his popularity be down in the low 40s.
They know, however, that the economy has been contracting for years.
You must know they had the stories about the surprising 5% annual growth they were expecting pre-written, and you can't expect them to just change everything at the last minute.
Yes, for the dopier ones and for some Reasonoids who stick to the "everything is always getting better and our economy is so innovative and forget the negative ninnies out there and dismiss the doom and gloomers" narrative.
Gas prices are creeping up and the payroll tax hike just kicked in.
Good luck hitting growth targets in 1Q.
My insurance cost doubled, my coverage got worse, and my payroll taxes went up. I lost about 3 years worth of salary increases to begin the year. yaaayyyy... economy!
This year is going to be bad
If only we had more regulation making it difficult to stay in business and impossible to start a business! Then we could really get the economy going!
Also punish investments with punitive taxes.
Indeed, think of all the jobs for paper pushers and form filler outers that would be created.
Or saved.
We can't lay off any paper pushers, because that will tank the economy, and then the freedomists win!
All businesses do is steal from the economy by making the rich richer and the poor poorer! Economic activity should be controlled by the government because the government doesn't waste precious resources on profits! What could possibly go wrong?
Are you the new troll? You sound so very much exactly like a progressive.
Why do you lick the boots that hold you down? You should be on the side of the progressives! All they want to do is take from the rich what rightfully belongs to the people! Why is it that ninety some odd percent of the means of production is in the hands of so few people? That's not fair! It's just not fair! All progressives want is equality! Why do you oppose equality?
You're pretty good at this. Are you sure that Tony isn't on your other hand?

Hope you will be rooting for the Ravens.
Ray Lewis, btw, is far more likeable than Tom Brady. Agree?
Sports shmortz. I could care less about watching men in tight pants throw a ball around.
My wife thinks that I have gone overboard with having to take on all of the Ray Lewis haters in Patriots nation.
I followed football for one season when I participated in the work pool. The same person won like 90% of the time. I never did. Waste of money. Haven't watched a game since.
Actually, I like that about you - good for you. So, if you were to see me and sloopy at a party, we would have to refrain from sports talk.
Never stopped people before.
THIS^
I'll be playing video games on Super Sunday. Watching sports bores me to tears.
I'm going skiing. People watching/prepping to watch the game may keep the lift lines short.
Mrs. Dean will make sure that we get in at least one quarter of the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.
Ray Lewis, btw, is far more likeable than Tom Brady. Agree?
I don't know about more "far more likeable", but I do know this: Lewis is legitimately one of the very best defensive players to ever put on the pads, whereas Brady, while a very good quarterback, has been so ridiculously sanctified by the league that he has become one of the more overrated players in the game.
Petyon Manning graciously congratulated Ray Lewis after the Ravens had upset the Broncos in the divisional round. Accoridng to Peter King, in addition to congratulating Lewis on the field, Manning, after all of the media had vacated Mile High, made his way over to the Ravens buses and sought out Lewis in order to offer more props and to wish him continued success.
Tom Brady? Nope.
Oh yeah, Brady and a lot of his teammates seem to have taken on their coach's attitude that they're entitled to win every game, which has made them some of the biggest sore losers in pro sports. Heck, even their big-mouthed wives sometimes get in on the act too.
Aaah Giselle!
The talking point I keep hearing is that this all because of Hurricane Sandy.
And "unexpectedly" continues to be a 4 years running sick joke.
I'm reminded strongly of an old song from 1932: Prosperity Is Just Around The Corner.
http://www.madmusic.com/song_d.....ongID=8433
To paraphrase The Thin Man, I sure wish we could find that corner.
The Thin Man
Mmmmmmmm...Myrna Loy!
D'oh! Not The Thin Man, My Man Godfrey.
Thank God this thread is dead and no one will see my shame.
You deserve credit for referencing a Willian C. Powell movie, regardless.
What makes me giggle when I hear people talk about how the alleged drop in government spending led to a decline in GDP is that part of GDP is government spending. It's tautological that an increase in government spending will (at least for that particular quarter) increase GDP, ceteris paribus. Yet the ones squawking about "austerity" never seem to mention that. Nor do they talk much about what the long-term effects of constantly increasing a gargantuan debt will be, particularly if (when) interest rates revert to historical norms.
They also skip step 1 in government spending which is taxation. Be it taxation in the present, or taxation in the future to pay borrowed money, step 1 is taxation.
Somehow removing money from the economy, skimming some off the top to pay useless government workers, then divvying it back out by political considerations is supposed to make the economy grow.
Doesn't pass the smell test.
"Doesn't pass the smell test."
Doesn't pass the laugh test either.
Prosperity will return once the libertarian and Republican kulaks have been sent to the killing fields.
We need a 200% income tax on the top 10%. With that revenue we can invest in unicorn farts to create sustainable industries that support people ahead of profits and support the community, not redneck racist greedheads.
Almost fooled me until the words "killing fields".
Top 10%? you monster. It should be top 49%. Why should one half have more than the other half?
Awesome. This is the greatest Krugman sockpuppet spoof ever.
"redneck racist greedheads:
If only real progressives called us names like "greedheads" then at least they be entertaining, and not just dreary and depressing.
Let me see if I understand this...
During last year's campaign, Obama bragged about "ending" two wars. Now he is blaming the end of those two wars as a decline in government spending that caused a contraction in the economy?
And you thought it was tobacco in those cigs he has been sneaking?
... Last year's growth was actually 2.2 percent. And that number was achieved by injecting billions in monthly debt for an array of liberal hobbyhorses...
Don't forget the China-outsourcing union-busting elitist snobs at Apple Electronics. And also remember Evil Oil Inc. and their fracking, raping Gaia to pump endless pollution into the global Commons - again for vile lucre.
Come to think of it, if all we had was billions pumped into liberal hobbyhorses, our economy would not have grown at all.
The constant libertarian carp is GDP is bullshit because it includes government spending.
But now that government spending drops, and the GDP reflects that, somehow they feel vindicated because fuck Obama!
Are you fucking retarded?
GDP is measured by a formula C + I + G + (X-M).
Where the G is government spending.
If you DEFINE GDP by the amount of government spending, then BY DEFINITION GDP is going to decrease when G decreases.
Wait. Your a progressive. So retardation goes with the territory.
Progressives have some sort of brain damage than prevents them from understanding basic economic facts.
