Texans Say It's Time for Gov. Perry to Retire
Polls say they want new blood in the governor's office
Is it time for Rick Perry to call it quits as Texas governor?
More than six in 10 Texas voters—including 34% who describe themselves as "very conservative"—say it's time for Perry to step aside, according to a Public Policy Polling survey. That compares with 31% of Texas voters who say Perry should seek re-election in 2014.
The Republican—in office since 2000—is already the longest-serving Texas governor. Perry hasn't said whether he will seek another term, run for president in 2016 or do both. A lot could happen between now and the end of the filing period for gubernatorial candidates, but these numbers are a cautionary tale for Perry even at this early stage of the game.
