Bill Clinton Warns Democrats About Guns, Acknowledges Non-Hunting Reasons to Bear Arms, Sorta
The former president wades in
At a private Democratic fundraising meeting reported on by Politico, Bill Clinton warned donors not to "trivialize gun culture," offering that gun control was an issue that drove voters to the polls, and explaining in his Clintonesque way that polling that suggests "the public is for us on all these issues" is "meaningless if they're not voting issues." From Politico:
[Clinton] said that he understands the culture that permeates a state like Arkansas — where guns are a longstanding part of local culture.
"A lot of these people … all they've got is their hunting and their fishing," he told the Democratic financiers. "Or they're living in a place where they don't have much police presence. Or they've been listening to this stuff for so long that they believe it all."
What might "this stuff" be? It sounds a lot like dismissing gun ownership as bitterness. Even when the anti-gun left acknowledges "gun culture," the fundamental place of civilian arms as a tool of self-defense and defense from tyranny is deafeningly ignored and in an effort to cloud those fundamentals we get raw emotional appeals instead.

Have fun with your bloodbath in 2014, TEAM BLUE. Even if you get no gun control passed whatsoever, you fucked yourselves good. Couldn't happen to more deserving scum.
I don't know, people have short memories.
Fortunately Obama's arrogance knows no limits, so he's sure to fuck up one something else between now and then.
If you think Obamacare was a big mistake wait till you see what he pulls off as a lame duck!
I'm guessing he'll take a shot at restricting gun ownership and the emission of certain trace gases. Should be fun to watch, if you're into the ole masochism.
I think if they were honest, more than a few smart Democrats who actually care about winning elections, would not have been upset if he had lost. He is going to go full retard and end any doubt that the Dem Party is anything but all of the worst things its opponents accuse it of being.
Fortunately Obama's arrogance knows no limits, so he's sure to fuck up one something else between now and then.
Like he did in his first term?
The NRA seems to have a good memory.
I don't know, people have short memories.
Biden 2016!
Episiarch's rage/gloating over the Dem-bulb idiocy always make gun articles worthwhile. And 2014 can't get here fast enough.
Ragloating.
Just wait, it seems we have a shooting at a Texas college. Time for those BAN BONERS to get rock hard again!
They can't help themselves. They have to know this is political suicide. At some level maybe liberals really don't want to be in charge. Maybe they want the Republicans to take back over. They can't take the responsibility and are happier bitching about the Man than being the man.
Two victims and the perp was shot, according to early reports that are always wrong.
Well, if there was defensive gun use, it's going to deflate those BAN BONERS super fast.
Nothing deflates baoners, Epi. Nothing. Every story that involves a gun in private hands is a perverted trail mix of ban-estrogen, ban-viagra, and Spanish-ban-fly to those people.
Early reports say a shoulder fired anti-aircraft missle was used in the shooting.
Which the media would misidentify as an AK-47.
Since when did media misidentify weapons as being of a type smaller and less terrifying to their readers than the actual weapon? A shoulder fired anti-aircraft missile is going to be misidentified as a Maverick AGM fired from a fully armed military surplus F16
Two victims and the perp was shot
Shot by whom, I wonder? I'm sure if they were shot by a law abiding CCW holder we'll be hearing all about it any second now...
Apparently the campus is a "gun free" zone. So the victims survival proves the victim was a criminal who deserved to die and who would have if only they had obeyed the law.
Authorities in Texas say three people have been wounded in a shooting at a Houston-area community college.
From the AP:
Harris County Sheriff's Maj. Armando Tello says three people had been wounded and a person of interest has been detained.
The shooting took place Tuesday at the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston.
A college official says the campus has been placed in lockdown.
Doesn't sound like enough of a body count to stiffen the ban boners.
Where the fuck did the police get the authority to place entire public buildings in "lockdown"? If I am not free to leave, that is a seizure under the 4th Amendment and subject to the restrictions of probable cause. Unless they have probable cause to believe someone has committed a crime, they have no authority to "lock them down". It fucking appalls me how this practice of police holding people hostage at every crime scene has arisen with no objection.
Where the fuck did the police get the authority to place entire public buildings in "lockdown"?
"Fuck you, that's where."
I was just thinking this too. The ticker just said a bunch of other nearby schools are locked down too. Fuck that shit.
Reasons why having children is probably going to land me in prison. If I show up to pick up my kid and they are on "lock down", I am probably going to jail that day.
No, you are not free to gambol.
If I am not free to leave, that is a seizure under the 4th Amendment and subject to the restrictions of probable cause.
Awwww, isn't that precious? You still think the Fourth Amendment means something!
Now get on outta here and play, ya little scamp!
Just another brother on lockdown.
There's nothing I like better than being stuck in a waiting room while CNN is reporting on something they have absolutely no information about.
Well maybe if you hadn't gone and gotten gonorrhea you wouldn't have had to go to the doctor in the first place.
BURN! (ing during urination)
Oh really, Vernon, why pretend, we both know perfectly well what it is you're talking about. You want me to have an abortion.
How else am I going to be sure to take advantage of the full array of PPACA benefits?
Have fun with your bloodbath in 2014, TEAM BLUE.
VIOLENT RHETORIC!!11!1!! OMG!
You are not kidding. The "oh my God I must vote for my vagina" and "we have to vote for the black man" low information voters are unlikely to show up. Meanwhile, they just gave all of the millions of disgruntled conservatives who didn't show up for Romney a reason to vote Republican again.
They really are retarded. Going after gun control was the absolute dumbest thing they could have done.
What if they put a black woman's vagina on the ticket?
What's funny is the height of self-delusion among the left.
I read a couple of articles today about the tough new Obama and how he's going to effectively end the republican party with his smarts and grit.
Here's one.
These fux really think Obama won because people actually believe his bullshit, like they do. They must not have paid much attention to the Romney campaign (or the McCain one for that matter).
They must not have paid much attention to the Romney campaign (or the McCain one for that matter).
Hell, they didn't pay attention to Obummer's campaign either. They just voted for the hip, kewl black dude. Or "voted with their lady parts" or voted for Obama because, err, uhm, RACISM!!!!!
It's also instructive to compare Obama's inauguration speech to Clinton's.
alt alt-text "This is my rifle! This is my gun! This is for fighting, this is for poking interns!"
"These things look scary. I'm glad I missed Vietnam..."
"Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!"
"This might be even more 'fun' than a cigar."
I can't imagine why anyone would not trust a government that intercepts their electronic communications without a warrant, asserts the right to kill them or indefinitely imprison them without trial, and can imprison them for the rest of their life for selling a plant.
But 9-11
The term we should be using is "anti-civil rights democrats" to distinguish them from the pro-civil rights democrats. I keep hoping this will catch on with at least Drudge or Fox News.
Democrats are never for civil rights in general. They're for special interest groups that vote Democrat. Sometimes that entails securing civil rights for that group, but curbing everybody else's rights is just works just as well.
That's got a lot of merit. I remember growing up how the Left used to treat Appalacians as one of their mascot groups, vowing to bring them up out of poverty and such. Then those damned Appalacians started voting GOP and the Dems turned on them and their kind like sharks.

Charlie Rangle, we have some culture in the South we need to overcome. What Charlie, is Chicago in the South now? 5% of all the gun violence in the country happens there.
Maybe Charlie's talking about his income tax-free rental house in the Dominican Republic?
http://online.wsj.com/article/.....01036.html
A person, who shall remain nameless but is a card carrying member of TEAM Blue, informed me that Chicago's "gun control" doesn't work because Chicago lacks...defensible borders.
I have the patience of a bodhisattava, because I resisted the urge to beat him like a dog for wasting oxygen uttering such stupidity.
That's part of what makes whatever that mayors' org is so evil. Not only do they pass bullshit laws in their own cities, but then when they don't decrease crime they just blame all the yokels who live within 100 miles or whatever for ruining their precious plans by not falling in line.
If the problem is all the guns that flow in from outside Chicago, then why isn't violent crime worse in those areas than in the Windy City? Surely thay have more guns, and thus more crime, yes?
Chicago's "gun control" doesn't work because Chicago lacks...defensible borders.
what this means in so many words is that Progressives Need More Control. the failure of any one policy is simply an argument for imposing control somewhere else.
I wonder how strong the overlap is between the people who believe that, and the people who say that communism works if everyone does it.
There's pretty much nothing that could sum up what's wrong with America more than this paragraph...
The road to Hell is paved with a mob screeching 'Do something!'.
Yeah, that too. I was thinking more about run-on sentences.
Run on sentences are killing this country.
Nobody needs sentences that long to write about hunting.
Ban assault sentences and limit comma capacity.
Remember the other day when I said that the transcribed words of a politician don't make any sense? Mr. Rangel provides a striking example of this:
Jesus...
Charlie Rangle, we have some culture in the South we need to overcome. What Charlie, is Chicago in the South now? 5% of all the gun violence in the country happens there.
Charlie Rangle!
Unlike Obama, Clinton had to win in a Red state. He knows the damage the Dems are doing to themselves everywhere except the bluest states.
Well the media blamed Gores loss to Bush on gun control.
If Gore had won his home state of Tennessee or the (at the time) traditionally Democratic state of West Virginia then he would have beaten Bush.
Some have snarkally said that since Al Gore junior pretty much grew up in a hotel in Washington D.C., he really did win his home 'state'.
It's almost as if the GOP touches the third rail of abortion and contraception and the Democrats wizz on the electric fence of gun control on a schedule. Like they are working together to keep general outrage high for some reason. It's almost like they are trying to distract the doughy middle from the economy or something.
The Democrats are even dumber. The Republicans at the national level do stay away from abortion and contraception. But it doesn't matter because the media will take any statement made by any Republican candidate anywhere at any time to be representative of the entire party.
The Democrats don't have that problem. The media will gladly refuse to report on anything embarrassing their lunatic fringe. In this case they have embraced the lunatic fringe proudly. Obama calling for gun control is really the equivalent of George Bush, while President, calling for a ban on the sale of contraceptives to unmarried people.
"because the media will take any statement made by any Republican candidate anywhere at any time to be representative of the entire party."
And they will also create the issue out of thin air during the gop debates. The whole contraception thing got rolling when Romney was inexplicably asked if the states had the right to outlaw contraception. There was absolutely no controversy about this until the media created it. Every gop debate is full of controversial issues designed to automatically get the candidates to alienate half the country right out of the gate. That doesn't happen in the dnc debates.
The whole contraception thing got rolling when Romney was inexplicably asked if the states had the right to outlaw contraception.
If Romney had responded with something along the lines of: [puzzled look] "Sorry, I'm trying to figure why you're asking me about this. I mean, why the hell are we talking about rubbers and BC pills while the economy is circling the drain?", I might have actually voted for him.
Never attribute to malice and calculation that which can be explained by stupidity. Even if the politicians themselves weren't this stupid, their base is, and they have to work with that.
Malice occurs during the cover up of stupidity.
Never attribute to malice and calculation that which can be explained by malice, calculation, AND stupidity

"distract the doughy middle"
Good album name.

Former Reason writer Dave Weigel brings the full barfman treatment to the inauguration. Sure the crowds were smaller for this inauguration. But this year's crowds were better.
ut they'd sure enough beaten the Tea Party. The president had fallen short on civil liberties, on climate bills, on a lot of what these people wanted. But they blamed his enemies, not the One. He'd been underestimated, and so had they, and that was exactly how they were going to win again.
He really will never stop bringing shame to Reason for hiring him.
He's far more representative of Reason than I ever realized at the time.
Cocktail parties!!! How I hates them!
Cosmos are young, hip and beautiful but poor, and do cocktail parties,
Paleos are old, fat and ghastly but rich, and sit around in smoking rooms.
"the public is for us on all these issues"
Gallup says only 38% want stiffer gun-control, with 48% wanting no-change or fewer...
http://www.gallup.com/poll/159.....yndication
That is how they roll. Claim that the majority is on your side so that the other side feels demoralized and isolated.
Yeah, it's an old and common tactice. You'll hear the most outlandish things precided by "Well everyone knows" or "Everyone agrees" or "everyone in the know will tell you" or some variant of the "science is settled".
That, along with shaming are their favorites. There's a lot of projection involved, though, because those are two tactics that work better against them than their enemies. Collectivists tend to be very concerned about others people's opinions, and in particular, other peoples' opinions of them.
I was thinking of the poll, quoted so often, that says 80% of NRA members want strict gun control.
The poll quoted had 1500 respondents, which if they had a representative number of NRA members, they'd have 20 NRA respondents. This is what it's come to, twenty fucking people are asked a poll question and it's supposed to speak for 150million gun owners. My ass it does.
Also, if 80% of the membership of the NRA was against the policies of the organization they'd be hemorrhaging money and members like Obama-droned pakistani children hemorrhage blood. That's a lot, for you guys not keeping score at home.
The NRA is the largest gun control group in the United States.
dismissing gun ownership as bitterness.
When I first heard that I almost changed my screen name to Bitter Clinger.
FTFY. I'm sure this is a lot closer to what he actually meant. What a shitheel.
the fundamental place of civilian arms as a tool of self-defense and defense from tyranny is deafeningly ignored Including by Nick Gillespie.
You can take Gillespie's food truck when you peel it from his cold dead fingers.
The fact of a large population of gun fetishists looking out for black helicopters is certainly something that must be pragmatically weighed in a debate about gun control.
I don't have the numbers, but I have little doubt that your team has the higher murder rate, and absolutely no doubt that they have the higher gun-to-murder ratio.
In light of that, I propose we ban guns for Democrats only. This will no doubt save thousands of lives, which is what you guys supposedly care about.
I've said I think localities ought to be able to make their own gun laws for their own practical purposes. What may work for rural areas may be bad for urban areas. I just wish we could keep philosophical rights and absolutism out of it. It gets the conversation nowhere.
Of course this proposal is almost completely toothless, since guns can be smuggled freely within this country.
Funny how you've taken a soft stance after seeing that Gallup poll.
My only position on this issue has ever been stop saying we can't even have the conversation because the magical constitution forbids it.
For someone who is a pure, unadulterated consequentialist, you sure don't understand the consequences of your favorite policies.
And, seriously, shut the hell up about "we can't even have the conversation..." We've been having a conversation with you and your ilk about gun control for years. Stop regurgitating what the NYT editors write.
Seriously. We've been conversing about it for decades. The gun grabbing side lost and lost big.
"we can't even have the conversation" = you're not agreeing with me and are instead questioning my bullshit
This isn't aimed just at you. There are comment threads 1500 deep on fark.com, 5000+ on the Washington Post, 1-3000 on CNN and people whine throughout 'why can't we have the conversation?'
We're having the conversation RIGHT NOW you fucking moron and you're a part of it.
Just because it's not going your way doesn't mean that it's no happening.
I think this is a subtle example of binary thinking on the part of these people. It's their way or the wrong way; if it's not happening the way they want, then it's not happening.
Perfect.
I'm sure you and the supposedly locality rights friendly gun control groups will have no problem with a city that wants to legalize/deregulate machine guns, suppressors, short barrel rifles/shotguns, allow 16 (or 14) year olds to carry, allow anyone who can legally possess (based on city law) to carry in city schools, allow posession of 25mm 'arms', etc. right?
Where's that picture at the top of the post from?
By which I mean, why's Bill posing with what looks like an M16A1?
(The triangular foregrips are telltale... almost nobody puts those on an AR-15, unless they're going Very Retro.)
I saw something about the SHOT show that happened recently, and there is a company making Nam style AR15s. Look just like the real thing. Kind of cool. I wonder if the war reenactment guys have started doing Vietnam yet?
Jesus Christ! I was about to comment on how I was glad to see a comments section that didn't feature the usual ludicrous controller arguments that have been refuted so many times. Almost had a perfect streak going. Then Tony showed up and someone engaged him. Sigh...
