Press laws proposed by Lord Justice Leveson would be more at home in China, a ministerial aide warned on Tuesday, as the Culture Secretary expressed "grave concerns" about statutory regulation.

Therese Coffey, a Conservative MP, told the House of Commons that proposals from the Leveson report could result in "interference with the activities of the media" and said she could "imagine that being said in the Congress of China"

She made the warning after Maria Miller, the Culture Secretary, said that there were "clear and practical" difficulties in drafting legislation to underpin a new independent regulator.
