China Clamps Down on VPNs
Virtual private networks have been a popular means of bypassing Internet controls
Multinationals and foreign web users based in China to get jittery on Wednesday after pictures began circling the internet which suggested a new clamp down on the use of virtual private networks (VPNs).
While VPNs in the Western world are more commonly used to enhance security, for netizens-in-the-know living in the People's Republic they represent an essential tool for bypassing the Great Firewall, which blocks many foreign sites and services including Twitter, Facebook and, periodically, Gmail.

Although China might be a bad place to subscribe to a local VPN service, I always recommend using foreign based providers. For users in China I would highly recommend using PureVPN, its still unblocked and the last time they messed up VPN connections across China in February Pure VPN was one of very few services that were still active in Chinese Cyberspace.

With over 2000 websites blocked, you can imagine the censorship practices that are very common in China. China has not only blocked Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Linkedin but it has also banned the popular websites like WordPress, SoundCloud, Google, Dropbox, Blogspot, Instagram, Vimeo, Tumblr and The Pirate Bay. Only China VPN could unblock social media.
