  • New York area airports are reopening post-Sandy. New York City's subway system will reopen on a limited basis Thursday.

  • Meanwhile, an organization in Syria is saying that Hurricane Sandy was created with advance technology by "heroic Iran."
  • A sign of sanity in Greece? The parliament narrowly approved a law freeing up the government to privatize public utilities.
  • Afghanistan has announced presidential elections in April 2014, a few months before pull out of the country.
  • The Department of Justice has shut down the Bal Harbour, Fla., asset forfeiture program and is ordering them to return $4 million. The tiny police force is accused of using the money to pay for cross-country flights and to grease the palms of informants.
  • N.J. Gov. Christ Christie is postponing Halloween until Monday in the state, though technically it's not a government holiday and he has no say in the matter.

The Department of Justice has shut down the Bal Harbour, Fla., asset forfeiture program and is ordering them to return $4 million.

The money, of course, is going to the feds, not to the people who owned it before Bal Harbour got their dickskinners on it.

The 50g of fat ingested with the two breakfast sandwiches is a days allotment for a 70 kilogram man.

So if I weigh more than 70kg I'm entitled to more fat, right?

      1. NeonCat   13 years ago

        It's a tasty, vicious cycle.

      2. Dagny T.   13 years ago

70 kg man? Only if he 5'3".

I guess no one has told these Canadians that fat isn't bad for you. Maybe they should test blood sugar before/after a glass of "healthy" orange juice and compare that to bad, evil bacon/eggs/butter.

          Motherfuckers! Paging Heroic Mulatto!!

Digestion diverts blood flow from the extremities to the gut (small intestine and supporting mesentary). Period.

Note the bastards didn't measure blood flow in the arm after a "healthy" breakfast. Just the sandwich, or a fasting subject.

50 grams of fat is only 450 calories.
That's only 20% of 2250 calorie allotment for a normal size guy.

Middle-aged men and women who consume the most saturated fat live longer and have a reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases:
Journal of Internal Medicine 2005 Aug;258(2):153-65

      Study title and authors:
Dietary fat intake and early mortality patterns--data from The Malm? Diet and Cancer Study.
Leosdottir M, Nilsson PM, Nilsson JA, M?nsson H, Berglund G.
Department of Medicine, Lund University, University Hospital (UMAS), Malm?, Sweden. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16018792

This study examined the association of fat consumption with death rates. The study included 28,098 middle-aged individuals who were followed for an average of 6.6 years.

      - Women who consumed the most saturated fat had an 11% reduced risk of death compared to women who consumed the least saturated fat.
      - Men who consumed the most saturated fat had a 9% reduced risk of death compared to men who consumed the least saturated fat.
      - Women who consumed the most saturated fat had a 45% reduced risk of a cardiovascular disease death compared to women who consumed the least saturated fat.
      - Men who consumed the most saturated fat had a 6% reduced risk of a cardiovascular disease death compared to men who consumed the least saturated fat.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but measuring dilation in blood vessels absent other conditions seems like stealing a base to me. There are lots of reasons your blood vessels change diameter. In fact, it would be a wasted adaptation if they were always fully dilated and you had blood dilation hormones. Am I missing something?

Exactly, do they have any positive and negative controls? Is this confirmed in sick vs healthy vs young vs old? What about any confounding effects?

  6. Archduke Pantsfan   13 years ago

    STEVE SMITH confirmed by science

  7. $park?   13 years ago

I'll throw this in here too for those who might have missed it.

Evil Mitt Romney takes advantage of Hurricane Sandy.

    Here's my favorite part:

Joy-Ann Reid, the former Obama campaign staffer who now runs the NBC-owned site TheGrio.com, insisted "anything he [Romney] does looks almost by nature too political. And he can't actually do anything. He can't do anything certainly for Chris Christie. Going around with Mitt Romney and his Secret Service detail through the affected areas of New Jersey would actually cause more problems and wouldn't help at all."

    1. R C Dean   13 years ago

Not to be confused with the lack of problems and enormous help conferred by going around with Barack Obama and his Secret Service detail.

    2. Brett L   13 years ago

As I was walking from the parking lot back to my office at lunch, I walked by City Hall, where a reporter asked me if I wanted to share my opinion on Mitt Romney's handling of TS/Hurricane Sandy. I said, "Sure. Which federal agencies does he run again?"

      End of interview.

      1. hotsy totsy   13 years ago

I have to remember that quote.

One of my Facebook friends posted that Mitt Romney is not human, because he should be rolling up his sleeves and Doing Something for the hurricane victims.
And besides, the Red Cross didn't like what his campaign collected anyway, so there!

Is there anything The Corpulent Jesus can't do? Besides redirect hurricanes, that is.

I don't understand this...the collective Jesus-dom of both The Rotund Repub and The Unicorn Saviour should have repelled such an affront.

Perhaps they can pull off that fish and loaves trick.

I've always wondered why people actually listen to the government when they officially move Halloween to another date. I mean it is not like the holiday has ANYTHING to do with the government yet people just meekly follow along like sheep.

      1. Pound. Head. On. Desk.   13 years ago

Around here typically they don't. It just turns Halloween into a two night event.

Calgary police to start wearing body mounted cameras

    1. R C Dean   13 years ago

Yeah, but do they have to turn them on? Keep the recordings?

I mean, unless they are properly trained to turn them on and not delete stuff, its all for nothing, right?

      1. Groovus Maximus   13 years ago

RC, the Crown approves! Isn't that good enough?

      2. BigT   13 years ago

Great news. Every PD should follow suit. Live feeds recorded in the cloud would insure no funny business. Also, steep fines for any cameras turned off or not in working conditions for more than the time it takes to notify HQ and have them replaced - a few minutes - and no 'police business' permitted when the cameras are nonfunctional.

        1. Generic Stranger   13 years ago

Also, steep fines firings for any cameras turned off or not in working conditions for more than the time it takes to notify HQ and have them replaced - a few minutes - and no 'police business' permitted when the cameras are nonfunctional.

FTFY. Just assume that if they had the camera turned off for any period of time, it was because they were doing something illegal, and fire their asses.

NY court rules shooting victim can sue gun firms

    http://www.thegunmag.com/ny-co.....gun-firms/

A Buffalo, NY, man who was shot nearly a decade ago can sue the manufacturer, the distributor and the dealer of the semi-automatic pistol used to shoot him, a New York state appeals court ruled on Oct. 5, according to the Insurance Journal and the Associated Press.

TGM had previously reported that this case was a continuation of an effort by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence's attack on the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA).

The great judiciary at work, folks.

    1. R C Dean   13 years ago

Even a middling judiciary would throw that out, sanction the attorney that brought it, and charge him and the plaintiff with the defendant's legal fees.

    2. Alack   13 years ago

So if I get hit by a car in NY, I can sue GM, the dealer, and the manufacturing plants? Good to know.

Today on Twitter: "this is why corporations need to be chartered."

What do we think someone thinks that means? Something horrible, clearly.

    1. Heroic Mulatto   13 years ago

Is he suggesting "chartered" companies like they do in monarchies? Where a favorite company of the King/Queen gets a Royal Charter?

      And here's something creepy:

The federal government can only create corporate entities pursuant to relevant powers in the U.S. Constitution. For example, Congress has constitutional power to provide postal services, so it has power to operate the United States Postal Service. Although the federal government could theoretically preempt all state corporate law under the courts' current expansive interpretation of the Commerce Clause, it has chosen not to do so. As a result, much of American corporate law continues to be a matter of state law under the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Thus, virtually all corporations in the U.S. are incorporated under the laws of a particular state.

Mexican man pleads guilty in Brian Terry slaying

A Mexican citizen who entered this country illegally to rob drug traffickers faces life in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the December 2010 slaying of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

It was the Terry murder, in the Arizona desert about ten miles from Nogales that ignited the investigation of Operation Fast and Furious 22 months ago

Manuel Osorio-Arellanes has been in federal custody since the night he was wounded in the gun battle that took Terry's life. According to CBS News and other news agencies, Osorio-Arellanes entered the guilty plea in an agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office that it would not to seek the death penalty. Instead, he could be imprisoned for the rest of his life.

The women are thought to have been recruited from the war-torn Russian republic of Chechyna by an al-Qaeda-linked group, with bases in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Terror experts believe that ? because they are less likely to attract suspicion than men ? they are being schooled to infiltrate and attack military bases and official buildings.

More than 14,000 murders in Chicago since 1990...Mayor oblivious

On Sunday night, the city of Chicago surpassed the previous year's number of murders (433), when a man, identified as 68-year-old Bariffe Fitz, was found shot to death in a home on the city's South Side. A few hours later, another man died at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after being shot multiple times.

Since January 1, 1990, an astonishing 14,919 people have been murdered in Chicago. Even worse, many of the victims have been children.

In July 2010, a 13-year-old boy was shot 22 times by a masked gunman. The killer emerged from a darkened, overgrown vacant lot and pumped round after round into rising eighth-grader Robert Freeman Jr. while he was riding his bike.

The boy's father, Robert Freeman Sr., told the Chicago Sun-Times: "My son was the only one got hit. I don't understand how no one seen anything."

As usual, witnesses would not cooperate, and this murder is as yet, unsolved.

The following lists the number of children murdered during the corresponding school years:

    2006-2007?31
    2007-2008?27

Nah, gun control's been tried. Next step is a $25 tax on guns sold in the county. (Heard today that our lovely Tony Preckwinkle has given up on the $0.50/bullet tax she was hoping for in addition.)

Romney's Lies to Auto Workers Show He Doesn't Get the Modern World

    http://blogs.dallasobserver.co.....kers_s.php

but the basic argument is a lie, according to Chrysler, the owners of Jeep. Chrysler, in fact, has gone to extraordinary lengths to prove the Romney line is a lie, even calling it, "a leap that would be difficult even for professional circus acrobats." Chrysler has said that, far from moving production out of Ohio and into China, it is about to expand its Ohio production.

Fast & Furious suit against Holder heating up

A House committee's lawsuit against Attorney General Eric Holder over his refusal to turn over some documents related to the fallout from Operation Fast and Furious will move forward at a faster pace than the parties requested, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.

The Justice Department moved on Oct. 15 to throw out the lawsuit brought by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and agreed with the House panel that it's lawyers could have two months to respond to that motion. However, U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson rejected that proposal on Wednesday, saying that the House committee should file its response by Nov. 16.

Floyd Lee Corkins, II, 28, of Herndon, Va. was indicted Wednesday on ten charges, including violating District of Columbia law by committing an act of terrorism while armed. A Justice Department statement said it was the first time anyone has been charged under the District's 2002 anti-terrorism law, which defines terrorism as illegal acts undertaken to "intimidate or coerce a significant portion of the civilian population of the District of Columbia or the United States." The offense carries a possible sentence of 30 years in prison."

Tempers flare in NJ city where thousands stranded

HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) ? Officials in the city of Hoboken, N.J., are defending their response to severe flooding from superstorm Sandy.

Public Safety director Jon Tooke says at least 25 percent of the city on the Hudson River across from Manhattan remains under water. He estimates at least 20,000 people are stranded and says most are being encouraged to shelter in place until floodwaters recede.

Tempers flared Wednesday morning outside City Hall as some residents complained the city was slow to get food and other supplies out to the stranded.

Barack Obama v Mitt Romney: Who would Britain vote for?

All the signs are the presidential election is set to be a close-run thing. So just why is Barack Obama overwhelmingly more popular than Mitt Romney in Britain and the rest of Europe? Chris Parsons from Yahoo! UK News takes a look.

While the outcome of the presidential election will ultimately be decided by the American public, both Obama and Romney will be keeping one eye on the world view in the lead-up to November 6.

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney's election campaigning may have been curtailed by Superstorm Sandy this week, but the two candidates are still fully aware they're involved in one of the closest presidential races in recent history.

Seizures of counterfeit and pirated goods in Ohio have skyrocketed in recent years, and the flood of fake goods into the marketplace is a serious threat to commerce and the health and safety of consumers, experts said.
Customs officials in the state were responsible for 1,767 intellectual property rights seizures in fiscal year 2012, 52 times as many as in 2008, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The retail value of the goods was $13 million, up from $1.1 million four years earlier.

Privatizing shit solves the tragedy of the commons problem and ensures they're trying to make it profitable, but it doesn't actually subject them to market forces. Privatization without marketization is about as bad as an average state (better than a terrible one, worse than a well-run one).

    Sandy debunks 'nanny state'

    Money Quote:

Hurricane Sandy even demonstrated that sometimes politicians should do more than what we want, especially when they are trying to save us from ourselves.
When New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered everyone out of Atlantic City, most residents ignored his request. And when New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, three days before Hurricane Sandy landed, activated the city's storm plan and issued an evacuation order for the city's high-risk Zone A floodplain, many observers thought he was over-preparing, like a grandmother urging you to wear galoshes in the rain.

Next time, evacuation orders will not be dismissed as examples of the "nanny state."
