Hurricane Sandy forced officials to pre-emptively shut federal and local governments for another day and keep the Metro system closed as the nation's capital prepared for the storm's full force to barrel into the mid-Atlantic Monday evening.

The Office of Personnel Management said on its website that Monday afternoon that the federal government would be closed on Tuesday. The District of Columbia and Maryland state governments likewise said they were suspending government operations.

The federal government hasn't been closed for multiple days since February 2010 snowstorms, dubbed Snowmageddon, blanketed the region with record-setting snowfall totals.
